Today's FGVOTD is a video from 1997 showing one how to master the Internet.
The video is from the comedy website Funny or Die and, while not real, is still hilarious.
It's particularly amusing from 1:04 to 1:20 when he goes from a creepy smile to various uses of the Internet.

ugh life never gets any easier does it? im sitting here with my nose pressed up against my computer monitor. anyway, without my contacts im blind as a bat. i threw out my last pair of contacts cuz they were old and crusty and i wound up getting an eye stuy or something (gross). but i was like that's okay i can just wear my glasses for the next month or so only to realize i havent seen those glasses around in over a year and probably threw them out cuz they werent even my glasses they were someone elses who had a similar prescription and id use them for emergencies but they would fall off my face anyway. also being blind as a bat didnt help with actually looking for the glasses since i can't see anything.
on the train this morning i feel like i remember some program i heard about where they give free used prescription glasses to people. does anyone know if such a thing exists or am i totally just imagining this. i know my prescription -3.00 in one eye and -3.25 in the other eye. im gonna go mad google free glasses program. oh yeah and if anyone has a pair of glasses (female frames are fine too, i dont care) with a prescription about that feel free to donate before i walk into oncoming traffic. and when i get new contacts in a few weeks ill redonate the glasses to such a program.
oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh! okay in the middle of writing this i found a super old old pair of contacts in a case in my desk drawer at work. tho i dont think i should put them in til i can get home and clean them thoroughly. okay hopefully these will be okay and i wont have to scrub around for someones old granny glasses.
also can someone recommend a staycation to do on memorial day?

Rob - do you want to be near a beach a park, do you want to be able to bring your dog along with you?
and no life doesn't seem to be easy at all for most of us out here - so I understand

a beach would actually be nice. i might just go to coney island. the beaches are open this weekend right?

yes but I think it's supposed to be sorta rainy on Saturday and chilly on Sun/Mon
Posted by: gemini10 at May 19, 2009 9:25 AM
Rob, darn it, I just donated a couple pairs of my old glasses on Sunday - really! I know there is a program. I'll call the guy I gave them to, and ask him. More later...

Rob,

Now I also know that you can buy inexpensive reading glasses in the drugstore, and the optician can add new lenses to this. So you can save a bundle that way. Do you not have any vision coverage at work? Hope that helps! : )
Posted by: cobblehiller at May 19, 2009 9:36 AM
Rob, there are some other much nicer beaches than Coney Island that are also in South Brooklyn. Try Manhattan Beach. Here is a link for you.

Rob - Drug stores have really cheap -3 glasses. I wouldn't go back to old lenses if I were you since you were having an eye problem.

as for a staycation - have you been to the botanical gardens in staten island? they are really gorgeous.

rob- try Coney Island- it may not be as pretty as Manhattan Beach but its certainly more interesting!
By the way- if you have a stuy or pink eye- get to a doctor right away. A friends kid had it so bad he nearly went blind- his vision was never the same after.
Posted by: bxgrl at May 19, 2009 10:07 AM
BRG, I meant all the talk of big hair here (in the OT) in the past, including comments from you, Snappy, etc. Too much coffee this morning?

rob,
There's more to your prescription you need to know I think...my prescription is from 2006 and before that I used one from 1999.
Buy the el cheapo reading glasses in the drugstore - choosing only for the style of frame you want. Then get the lenses made.
Or go to a glasses store and try on pairs. Ignore the sales push and just note stuff like the temple length (135 or 140 mm), eyepiece width (46, 48, 52 or something) and bridge width (17, 18, 19). All this is printed on the inside of one of the temples. Then, knowing your size, buy online. I got mine that way for about $100 bucks.

Slow day on the OT!
Rob, I would recommend Brighton Beach, and you can get there by subway. BB is heavily Russian, so you feel like you are travelling to another country. There are some Russian restaurants right on the Boardwalk, and it is fun to just sit there, have a drink and eat some good stuff, and watch the parade of people on the Boardwalk.
If you go there, also check out Brighton Beach Ave, under the "el" tracks. Lots of interesting stores.
Hey, I just got an idea for a future Brownstoner get-together: a Russian night club!! They are a blast, but you need to dress up for them. If you haven't been to one of these night clubs, I would recommend it. It's best to go with a group though.

at 1:25, THAT'S DAVE!!!
he's disgusted being approached by a woman.
This video can be recreated by the PLUSA's. I won't tell you who the guy in the vest with the cut off sleeves reminds me of.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 11:39 AM
benson, I love checking out the food stores under the "el" and picking up some greasy, fattening and absolutely delicious Russian food. The Russian night club gathering sounds like a fun time indeed. I'll have to really put on the ol' drinking shoes if I hope to keep up with those Russians. Ever been to the Russian Vodka Room in Midtown East? It's a hoot.

How about the Russian Baths?
http://royalpalaceny.com/
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 19, 2009 12:00 PM
Biff, the chocolate vodka at the Russian Vodka Room (served in a test tube) is amazing! Those Russian clubs in Brighton are great, too, but a bit pricey. The shows they put on are well worth it. My friend's graduation party was at one of them - they had girls dancing in spandex and some crazy hats with lots of peacock-style feathers, carrying candles. Some guy went around putting the candles out with a whip. The song was called "Touch My Fire" - priceless!
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 19, 2009 12:04 PM
We had a work gathering at Tatianna in brighton and had a great time. Not cheap but the food and vodka were plentiful.
Posted by: DeLepp at May 19, 2009 12:06 PM
You guys are in luck. Some of my good friends own some of those places. We can definitely arrange something or I am volunteering to work as a tour guide and take you guys to some good food places if you're willing to travel.
The russian night clubs/restuarants are only good on weekends. There are really no parties there on Thursday nights. If you want to just get some good cheap home cooked russian food and BYOB style, we can make it happen any night of the week.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 19, 2009 12:09 PM
kensingtonian- that sounds great! Are you also willing to be tour guides for a few people? Especially those with families from the same city in the old country ?? (hint hint).
Posted by: bxgrl at May 19, 2009 12:34 PM
Sure, why not bxgrl. I am not much of a russian historian but definitely can take people to a good food place, some good vodka tastings and some shopping. Plus, russki locals wont look at you funny if you're with a Russian who is showing you around Brighton :o).
Disclaimer - I personally hate Brighton Beach and avoid it at all costs unless I am showing out of towners around and they specifically want to check out "Brighton".
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 19, 2009 12:44 PM
Rob: If you want to go somewhere serenely beautiful, an absolute gem with a view of the Palisades, go to gardens at Wave Hill in the Bronx (which has free admission on Saturday mornings). You can take the #1 train to the last stop (242nd St.), which will also leave you outside Van Cortlandt Park, filled with lots of activity, playgrounds and forests. I think Wave Hill provides free shuttle service from the subway.
My impression, though, is that you prefer activity over quiet, in which case
Coney Island is definitely the place to go. Take the R train to 36th and switch for the D to the last stop. You don’t have to choose between Coney Island and Brighton Beach...they run right into each other and are within easy walking distance. This will also give you a chance to watch the games at the legendary handball courts and stop at the Aquarium: http://www.nyaquarium.com/

ark: i wound up disinfecting those old pair of contacts i found in my desk drawer. so i can see for most part :) i am pretty sure these ones were used for a loooong time more than they should have been, but they will do as long as they are clean. and i flushed my eyes with solution and stuff. im going to give it another shot and look for my glasses tonight. they are probably in an unpacked box or something.
love "contact low" i cant wait to thank people for a contact low the next time i enter a room full of people who i dont like.

As far as Russian themed bars go - I really like Pravda downtown. Not really authentic (owned by McNally of Balthazar/Pastis) - but they have over 100 types of vodka and some russian style food.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 19, 2009 2:08 PM
I'm not much into the Russian scene. Now if we all want to go to a place down in K-Town swarming with testosterone filled 20-30s Korean guys (and girls too) thenI'm certainly up for that.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 19, 2009 2:08 PM

Now there's no room on the sidewalk because of pain-in-the-ass tourists and suburban wannabes. Meanwhile, the stuff in this area is prime - there are fewer tourists and more "real" NYers, I think. Anyway, these chicks up here look GOOD!
Posted by: East New York at May 19, 2009 3:30 PM
No doubt ENY - that's why I watch them from my office window! I can't stand walking around soho - people love to stop in the middle of the sidewalk for no reason - that really irks me.

"that's what you men are discussing?"
Got something better?
Posted by: benson at May 19, 2009 3:35 PM
When I worked for US Trust my colleagues and I would go out on the corner of 47th & 6th ave after lunch for eye candy. I had them trained as to exactly what I liked and in no time they were spotting guys for me. They were all married so just about anything would do for them!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 19, 2009 3:35 PM
do you mens even know what middleschmerz is
ENY - oh lord I know what happens in spring/summer - men can't help but stand outside and gawk at all us women who wear sandals, tank tops, no coats etc etc
it's awful- I really hate it
but maybe when Im 45 I won't get cat called anymore so maybe I should enjoy it now
Posted by: gemini10 at May 19, 2009 3:37 PM
DH - try working up here in midtown at Fifth Ave and 55th - it's awful
they all flock to the A&F store
I seriously cannot stand the amount of tourists up here.
gack!
Posted by: gemini10 at May 19, 2009 3:39 PM
"gawk at all us women who wear sandals, tank tops, no coats etc etc"
I don't cat-call and I try not to "gawk." I'm used to being around beautiful women (80% of ladies in PR are good-looking, and I have my own experience, etc., etc.). So I understand how to be appreciative without being rude. I'll admit a lot of men haven't figured out how that's done. At the same time, every summer the female skin/how-much-is- appropriate-to-show quotient seems to increase, based on my exhaustive research. And if certain worthy parties are willing to advertise, who am I to ignore the message?
Posted by: East New York at May 19, 2009 3:43 PM
I see I haven't missed much.
Wake me up when something interesting is happening.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 3:46 PM
ENY I am right by you (22nd and 6th).
DH, if I had a windowed office looking out into Soho, I would definitely not do work and just stare at eye candy all day long.
G10, you probably passed by me a few times then, I don't cat call though, I just gawk :o(.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 19, 2009 3:46 PM
Gemini10;
To follow up on ENY's post: there IS a difference between a gawk and an admiring glance. I think many women are flattered by the latter, but hate the former.
Posted by: benson at May 19, 2009 3:51 PM
Well I have to also admit that I find certain ethnic groups do it more outwardly than others
sorry - it's true
ENY - agreed I think some women's baramoter of approriateness is ridiculous
I saw this girl the other day, normal thin girl not much of a body get off the F train in Park slope with cutoff Jean shorts exposing her cheeks - I was in shock I couldn't help looking nevermind some man
Posted by: gemini10 at May 19, 2009 3:51 PM
I'm not sure I know the difference btw admiring and gawking - I try not to do a 180 and turn my head, but I might follow with the eyes.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 19, 2009 3:55 PM
I gawk at men.
I've thrown out a catcall here and there. It's great fun cause they never expect it.

DIBS, are you around this weekend? wasder suggested we pub crawl on Friday night. He's very busy with a show he's doing and isn't even sure he can make it for the whole time.
If I get Amzi to join, would that entice you?
DH/Kens, are you interested? Maybe G10 and BRG can tag along and you can make catcalls towards them from the other end of the bar.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 19, 2009 4:05 PM

Yep and snorted on!!
When I was younger (many moons ago) I used to wear mini's. Once I was walking on Broadway and stopped at a cross section and waiting for the green walk. I felt something by my leg. I turn around and this guy had slipped a camera under my skirt and taken a pic.
THAT was creepy!!

I'm not Biff. The bf and I are in Provincetown from Thursday through Tuesday.

Speaking of reading Japanese and other Asian languages, apparently my Chinese isn't what I thought it was:
I get home last night and was surprised to see Mrs. Champion had whipped up fried rice for dinner. I thought she said chow fun as in noodles. However, as many of us know, a slight change in pronounciation when speaking Chinese means something quite different. She said something like, "I said chow foon, not chow fun!!". Who knew?

at least the finale of 90210 is on tonight on regular trailer park tv.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 4:59 PM
DH, the power of Google! I've already printed a map and marked the 8 spots (I listed Lox twice by mistake). It is a bit of a haul from Outpost to Moe's to Rope. I think we should start with the place(s) that look the best for our drinkup and go from there, maybe stopping at others we see along the way. And don't worry, I'll change into my t-shirt and jeans and lose the monkey suit before I meet you there.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 5:07 PM
Yeah Biff - I actually just made a google map with everything linked. i think starting out at habana > moes > madiba > brooklyn public house > rope > speakeasy > lox > outpost works geographically (or reverse)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 19, 2009 5:12 PM
Pathetic Losers, I wouldn't list your route on here.
Lurkers abound
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 5:14 PM
The asshats are hitting EIGHT places!? Oh lord, the hangovers are going to be legendary!
Posted by: cobblehiller at May 19, 2009 5:17 PM
DH, I should have let the young, hip, more technically savvy of us do this. I had the exact same order (in reverse, as I think it might be best to start at Outpost) except I had Habana Outpost and Moe's switched around - they're close to each other anyway, so it doesn't matter. Outpost is probably the least "bar-ish" of them all, so it probably makes sense starting there. Plus, I think the end of night transportation options are better around Moe's.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 5:17 PM
If the lurkers haven't bothered us at the last three drinkups, whereby we've announced the exact date, time and place of the gatherings, I'm not too concerned about them showing up for this. And if they do, the more the merrier.

5:50 - waiting for hubby to come home to eat so I can then eat chocolate cake.
5:51 - Waiting sucks.

I LOVE PIEROGIS!!
Seriously, I have no portion control with those. I can literally eat whatever's put in front of me with those. Too delicious.

LOL!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 19, 2009 5:52 PM
THL, that sounds very yummy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 5:54 PM
Do you like that I knew I was going to think 'waiting sucks' a minute before it actually happened?!?!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 5:55 PM
"I LOVE PIEROGIS!!"
THL, get your butt, and the rest of you for that matter, to Teresa's on Montague Street! They have some very good Polish food and are known for their pierogies. You can get them boiled or fried.

"Hahah Biff - i still have NO idea what Twitter is!"
DH, you are seriously risking your "hipster" status. I've noticed many of you guys are down on Twitter. Don't be afraid! It's just a social messaging tool. The constant updates are no different than the chit-chat we engage in here, and from time to time, folks who are into something interesting post ("tweet") something good, just like here. I'll admit, the Twitter hype is WAY overblown. But in essence it's no different from blogs or other electronic communication tools.

Thanks Biff, I swear I must consume my body weight in hot dogs and well BBQ in general over the course of the spring/summer.
It wasn't exactly a stretch though BRG. Waiting does suck. Particularly when it involves chocolate cake.

I want to come over THL!!
We're going to BBQ this weekend at my sis-n-law's. I can eat so much BBQ, it's disgusting.
In one sitting I can probably down:
2 hamburgers, 2 hot dogs, 2 chicken legs, corn on cob, endless.
(Maybe even more hamburgers minus the buns)
Give me lots of relish and I'm a happy girl.

While that's true ENY don't you think it's akin to those people who literally can not do anything or go anywhere without the cell phone glued to their ear. They can never disconnect. Almost like they're afraid to be alone with their thoughts.
I call it Twitter with an "A"

"I LOVE PIEROGIS!!"
I know, I love them tooo much! I just inhale them!
Posted by: cobblehiller at May 19, 2009 6:02 PM
THL, I think I consume my body weight in beer and ice cream each week. And then I wonder how on earth I'm not 150 pounds.
ENY, I'm starting to wonder if DH is a poseur. A hipster who doesn't know what Twitter is? How is that possible?
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 6:02 PM
Theresa's is really yummy! THl, come over here, and meet me and BRG for pierogis!
Posted by: cobblehiller at May 19, 2009 6:03 PM
Wow BRG, and you're just a little thing. Oh that's right, you don't drink. See I always need to save some room for beer with my dog.
I'm usually 1 dog, 1 burger, endless corn (with lots of butter) and just a little of everything else, baked beans, macaroni, slaw, whatever.

"I call it Twitter with an "A""
Now THAT was funny. And I dare not make that line less subtle.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 6:05 PM
I love pierogis! Fried please. What's the point of them boiled?
With lots of sour cream.....mmmmmm.
Ladies, while the men do their pub crawl maybe we should do a food/dessert crawl?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 6:06 PM
Oh, I know Theresa's. That's too dangerous for me.
Biff, 150 sounds too skinny for a guy.
If a bun wearing white haired little old lady like myself knows Twitter, how does DH not know?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 19, 2009 6:07 PM
"See I always need to save some room for beer with my dog."
Your dog drinks beer?
I'm a 1 dog, 1 burger, 10 brewski kind of guy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 19, 2009 6:08 PM
Alright, gotta run and fire up the grill. The man just twittered that he's back in JC. I kid, he called from his mobile phone (how archaic of him!).
Have a good night all.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 19, 2009 6:10 PM
"Wow BRG, and you're just a little thing."
HA, I wish. The choco. cake I will consume later will be added to my thighs and my gut
And frankly, I don't care. Who the heck am I out there to impress!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 6:11 PM
"Biff, 150 sounds too skinny for a guy."
Good thing for me I'm around 30 pounds north of that.
Ok fellow PLUSAs, I'm out. Have a great evening.

"he called from his mobile phone (how archaic of him!)."
It sure is! My hubby is hip, he texts me.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 6:13 PM
"150 sounds too skinny for a guy."
If you're a hipster, 150 is too fat. They don't make skinny jeans that big.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at May 19, 2009 6:18 PM
haha very funny guys! ta ta!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 19, 2009 6:36 PM
