Today's FGVOTD was submitted by daveinbedstuy (DIBS / Dave) and is a tribute to our discussion in yesterday's Open Thread about running away.
While I was initially skeptical about running this - it doesn't at first seem like a "feel good" video - by the end, the message is to "Keep the Faith". It is interesting to note the messages at the 2:41 mark of "foreclosure" and "bankruptcies up". With signs like that, this could have been released yesterday, although it was actually released in 1995.
Keep the faith, you gotta keep the faith,
you better keep the faith and run away.
Thanks DIBS

Given all the talk of New Jersey yesterday, I could also have run this verions of Runaway, featuring Bon Jovi:

Or, as a tribute to Western European asshats discussed yesterday, here is my favourite runaway song ever, by Slade:

To continue our discussion on things Italian, I offer this bit of news from Italy. Some of Berlusconi's quotes are noteworthy....
Italy Passes Immigration Bill; President Warns of Xenophobia
By Steve Scherer
May 14 (Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s allies in parliament passed a bill making it easier to deport illegal immigrants and requiring public employees to report anyone in the country without a permit.
After three confidence votes yesterday to approve
amendments, the Chamber of Deputies passed the legislation
today. The bill now goes to the Senate for final passage before becoming law.
Berlusconi and his Northern League coalition allies are
taking a hard line on illegal immigration before June 6 and 7 European Parliament elections. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, a League member, started turning back boats full of illegal immigrants off of Sicily back to Libya last week. On May 10, Berlusconi defended the move, saying he didn’t want a “multiethnic” Italy.
President Giorgio Napolitano today said that “public
rhetoric that doesn’t hesitate to be intolerant or xenophobic” is aggravating the risk of social tensions in Italy, according to a speech delivered in Rome.
The bill proposes making it a crime, punishable by a fine, to be an illegal immigrant. This will allow public officials to flag clandestine foreigners to the police. Anyone who rents rooms or homes to illegal immigrants could face jail time. Neighborhood-watch or vigilante groups will be allowed to be formed, and illegal immigrants won’t be able to get children born in Italy legalized.
There are more than 4.1 million foreigners living in Italy, with almost 20 percent residing illegally, according to a report in October by the national statistics institute. Italy has a population of about 60 million.

The video director Nigel Dick, despite his funny name, was definitely one of the top directors in this field for a long time, still is actually.

Why do you guys insist on putting up videos of rockers (Bon Jovi)???

Posted by: jessibaby at May 14, 2009 9:38 AM
biff--50/50 though that is better than the near certainty that I wouldn't a few days ago. A trip to LA was canceled yesterday or I would have been on a plane tonight. Will have to play it by ear. This project I am working on for FUSE is two hours long and I have two weeks to finish (and just started editing--crazy!)

Hey, what is the earliest folks are showing up to this informal drink session tonight? And where exactly is it?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 9:41 AM
I am truly gutted to have spent four minutes and 19 seconds of my life, in a stupor of suspended, slack jawed wonderment, watching that video. I just couldn't look away from the darkened, big-brotherly montage. The beat, the drama, the melancholic pain... I think I'm 16 again. I'm not kidding. Lord.

Rob, I've seen you "spaz out" before, and trust me, you didn't just do it in the Ditmas Park thread. Good thoughts and potentially good thread there.
I especially liked that mister B jumped in with one of my biggest pet peeves: This notion that middle class (or upper class, or poverty) can be defined by feeling. That how one feeels about making a particular amount of money should be the barometer to his class level, rather than factual or descriptive boundaries, objectively or quantifiably set OUTSIDE of one's subjective experience.
Posted by: Nokilissa at May 14, 2009 9:56 AM
Snappy, it is at the Waterfront Ale House; 155 Atlantic Avenue (Between Henry & Clinton). We will be kicking off the festivities at 7pm.

Thanks for the emails the other day.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 14, 2009 9:58 AM
Yeah, I agree Nokilssa - but isn't it a little bit ridiculous that we live in a place where people can feel "poor" while they are infact the top 1.5% of earners in the country?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 9:59 AM
"Biff, did you forget something back at the office last night?"
JB, funny! No, since riding home is so fast for me, I often go back and forth over the bridge a few times after work to get some exercise. I think I did it four times yesterday.

Yeah someone told me that unemployment rate is something like 25% in Italy (not sure how true that is) so getting rid of illegal immigration is one way to battle that I guess.
France, Germany and UK are way worse from what I understand as well.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 10:25 AM
It was in 2001, when Brooklyn real estate was booming. I met with an agent and he took me to three houses, but I remember two of them were in contract, with the exception of Hancock.
The house had a tenant and I was very adamant that I didn't want to purchase a house with a tenant, especially one who was just paying $400 a month. They promised that the house would be delivered vacant.
The house needed work and they were going to do the work. I signed the contract and gave a deposit of $10k. Months went by and the tenant was still in the house, no repairs had taken place and I was fed up. I demanded to meet with them (at that time their office was on Hanson Place). They basically said they were unable to evict the tenant and they would be willing to pay me $1,000 a month to subsidize the tenant's rent for a year. My lawyer also promised to help me in the eviction proceeding, of course at a fee.
I was in love with this house, I already saw myself living there, enjoying the backyard, etc. Thank God I had the fortitude to say "hell no!" I demanded my money back and got my money two days later. Don't get me wrong, I spent the entire Labor Day weekend in tears...then 9/11 happened and it put everything in perspective.....albeit, I ended up buying a Fedder special, but that's a different story. Sorry for being so long winded.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 14, 2009 10:23 AM"
In terms of unemployment? The current King is Spain with unemployment at 17% and predicted to go above 20% by the end of the year.
Posted by: the chicken at May 14, 2009 10:39 AM
Snappy,
$12-15 is better. Don't need to go higher, but I notice that there is a real jump in the selection and quality of gifts once you go those extra few bucks. If you have time and don't know what to get, go to Toy Space on 7th Ave @ 14th St. You will get advice for the age range.
Posted by: slopefarm at May 14, 2009 10:41 AM
I really couldn't understand how she didn't know the price of the house prior to the closing...that would not fly with me, but I can certainly attest that United Homes conducts business in an unscrupulous manner.
Posted by: faithful at May 14, 2009 10:41 AM
Best gifts for 1 yr olds is something for the 'rents - like a pack of onesies. Add a cute card as scrapbook fodder.
Posted by: Arkady at May 14, 2009 10:42 AM
No, not necessarily with the current unemployment rate but more along the lines of racial/class/immigrant tensions. Unemployment certainly is one of the main drivers though.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 14, 2009 10:42 AM
Snappy if you come, I'll bring something for you for the one year old. And the best thing, it'll be FREE!!!
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 14, 2009 10:43 AM
Thanks slopefarm. And thanks for the idea Arkady. I was considering Toy Space, but arent they pricey? I'm unemployed and really don't wanna spend a lot on money on a baby toy that will bore the kid to tears in less than a week. Hmmm...maybe I'll just go to Century 21 and buy him an outfit. Babies need clothes far more than they need toys. Besides, at that age, they are just as happy playing with the wrapping paper covering whatever you bought them.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 10:45 AM
Whatcha got Kens?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 10:45 AM
Faithful, its a true shame, but I guess there will always be companies out there looking to make a quick buck on the backs of the clueless. But that woman really should have known better. I don't mean to imply that she deserves what happened to her, but a little common sense goes a long way, particularly in those situations. They allegedly kept telling her 'don't worry, you can afford it' yet never knew asked about her income until closing day. That should have told her something.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 10:47 AM
Snappy, boy or girl?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at May 14, 2009 10:48 AM
Doesn't the Italian bill seem a little over the top? ISeems to me a bill allowing, if not outright encouraging, neighborhood watch/vigilante groups from a guy who says he doesn't want a multi-ethnic Italy reminds me a bit too much of 1930's Germany. Not to invoke Godwin, but there it is.
Posted by: bxgrl at May 14, 2009 10:48 AM
Haha Snappy - Speaking of baby stuff - was walking through the West Village a few weekends ago and apparently there is a Marc Jacobs baby store where you can outfit your kid in a 150 dollar article of clothing they'll grow out of in a month.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 10:48 AM
DIBS, the room was European-sized. My wife was aghast at first but soon grew to like it. I can't remember exactly where we ate, but I had some good frito misto, spiny crab salad and plenty of northern italian vino.
Posted by: dittoburg at May 14, 2009 10:49 AM
Kens, it's a boy.
DH, I always marvel at people who spend a ton of dough on baby clothes and shoes. It's crazy. I mean, it's one thing to spend $100 on an article of clothing for yourself...you aren't growing anymore (assuming no cheeseburger binges!) but for a growing kid who can only wear something for an average of a few months? Ridonculous! That's why I like C21...I buy my niece cute outfits there all the time...good quality name brand stuff for cheap.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 10:53 AM

Did anyone see the "Stoler Report" Tuesday night on the CUNY channel? It was real estate show about Brooklyn with reps from Hudson Cos, Toll brothers and the developers of 1 Propect park, ORO, the B and 4th Ave(Gowanus). Toll is still pricing Billyburg at 700-800 SQ foot, the B is at 550-650 SQ foot, 1PP at 750-1500 sq foot, and hold onto your hats they're predicting 600-650 sq foot for Gowanus when and iff it ever gets developed. Hudson mentioned that 4th Ave was only 1 block from 5th Avenue 7 times. Stoler the host nearly fell off his chair about 4th Ave. They were realist about the hotel situation, it sticks.

Snappy, I thought the same exact thing! Who would close on a home without knowing the price? Who would even look at a home without knowing the price? While I agree that United Homes was predatory with this woman, and who knows how many others....I feel like who can possibly be this ignorant when buying a home? I too was a first time home buyer, knew very little, so went out and learned about what we would be getting into, what we could afford, etc. and made our purchase based on this information. The fact that this woman has not made one mortgage payment since 2004 kills me. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Just go onto a random Curbed thread hahaha.

EXCATLY, Biff. Just like the contingency plans that every company has in place now. If the brownstoner server is down for more than an hour we should all assemble at Union Hall. Mr. B will post new threads on a blackboard and we can all comment while drinking copious amounts of alcohol to get us through the disaster.

dh....I always use Arecibo...they will be cheaper than a taxi except from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

DH, the beauty of Brooklyn Heights is you can always get a cab. They are most plentiful on Clinton heading north, which is exactly where we'll be. Or you might get lucky and be able to hitch a ride with the BRG Express!

oh!! i wanted to ask this earlier but got caught up in the ditmas park thread (which seemed to bring out the ugly in a lot of people, myself included)..
i got such great advice and suggestions about a vet, now it's time i find my own vet!! anyone know of any good primary care physicians around the park slope area or could recommend one? male, female, she-male, doesn't matter really. preferably just someone who is friendly. unfriend doctors really anger me for some reason. it's like if youre gonna make me put on one of those stupid medical gowns, you better at least ask me with a smile on your face. so i would greatly appreciate any suggestions, then i will call them to see if they are in plan with my health insurance (aetna. which SUCKS btw)

Cool - although yellow taxis like to play dumb when you get one obvi going back to the bridge to Manhattan, and you're like "oh no you don't! we're going intra-brooklyn!"
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 12:46 PM
dh...I learned years ago how to deal with taxi drivers when I lived on East 54th St and always told them that I wanted to take the 59th street bridge from LaGuardia and not the triborough. I heard a lot of bullshit about the bridge being out and 2nd Aveneue being closed!!!!
"one more comment and you won't get any tip" usually works.

Sorry dh, I might not be there tonight, as I can't find my clear plastic pumps (This party girl doesn't leave the house with out them). So you might have to find another ride.

Rob, my GP is in Soho, Dr. Brian Meehan. He's on Spring and 6th Ave. He's a noted, "Hot Doc."

Posted by: jessibaby at May 14, 2009 12:57 PM
Yeah - I'm not too worried. I have a pretty good sense of direction. As i recall there's an entrance to the BQE at the beginning of Atlantic Ave.
Yeah Dave - taxi drivers can be really annoying sometimes. they get testy when I'm coming from uptown, and rather then having them go all the way down to the williamsburg bridge i have them take the queensboro and cut thru long island city/greenpoint. it saves about 5 bucks on the fare.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 12:59 PM
dh...I'm usually in the 40s in Manhattan and a taxi over the Williamsburg bridge to Bed Stuy is usually half the fare that the car service always quotes...so I usually round it up to $20 which is a really nice tip.
Sometimes there's a problem. If I've had an awful lot to drink, I might fall asleep and can't tell them where to turn off of Broadway!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 14, 2009 1:03 PM
DH, absolute worst case scenario is you can crash out on a couch at my place and get up tomorrow around noon, like any self-respecting hipster would do.

Ok, Arkady, I hope I'm reading this right. :-)
You're not going to go if it's raining? Why can't you bring an umbrella. And the larger question is, why do New Yorkers in general all seem so scared of rain? It's amazed me ever since I moved here. I thought y'all were supposed to be tough.

Arkady, I actually just called the place hoping they would have armagnac and I could entice you to show up. Unfortunately, I must confess that the bartender seemed a bit confused. In the event I was mispronouncing it, I spelled it out for him, which seemed to confuse him even more.

Biff...the scared of the rain thing amazes me too but it was never more clear than when I lived in Asia. It would be a monsoon downpour in Bangkok and everyone would be SOAKING wet yet they continued to run. You couldn't get any wetter if you jumped in a pool yet people continued to run. Why not just stop, walk and enjoy it????
Arkady..it won't be there, you will come and you will buy me a beer.

DIBS I was just going to comment the same thing about COTD and HOTD. you made that point a couple of days ago and I noticed it recently as well. I am guessing the inventory is really that low and people are not selling truly nice apartments and houses. They are just sitting on their hands and waiting or settling in them for now till the market picks up.
I miss real estate porn :o(

Kens....I had actually gone to the Sotheby's site to post some real Manhattan townhouse porn and then got distracted.

Yep Dave but it's not the "Impure" you like.

I like those COTD & HOTD. those are the ones that won't get the deep pockets' attention and are prime target for a massive low ball offer.
although it's not my 1st choice but Jersey City prices crapping hard recently has it pretty attractive alternative to BK. saving on the NYC income tax is super attractive too.
Posted by: more4less at May 14, 2009 2:57 PM
i have issues with adding the word porn to real estate and floorplan porn, etc. it really annoys me on so many levels. one i love real porn and two the use of the word porn in the context of that makes no actual sense. but then again people seem to treat brownstones and decrepit rowhouses (aka mini tenements) as if they are gold toofs.

But Dave, I simply must look at least semi-cute when drinking...you never know when another eligible PBL may saunter into the bar!

I just saw this story on Yahoo....
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.reuters.com/quotslumdogquot-child-star39s-mumbai-shanty-home-torn-down-reuters
Seems the kid who played young Salim is still living in a shanty town.....
Notice the reference to "poverty porn" which i think is sick as opposed to real estate porn.
This is a travesty.

Probably not as good as bacon infused bourbon - but yummy i'm sure.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 3:07 PM
The last time I had a shot it was at a birthday celebration...the shot was called Birthday Cake and it actually tasted like birthday cake! I have no idea what was in it though.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 14, 2009 3:07 PM
if a shot is mixed - it's not really a shot, it's a cocktail served in a smaller glass, for which the bartender charges you more money.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 3:09 PM
So does the whole bottle fit up the unicorn's butt????
I believe Peaches & Smoke Joint have bacon infused bourbon.

From the strangest article I've read this month, on how to get married:
Or, even more sexily, try the new scent-matching dating site en.basisnote.com, which for $100 promises to (yuck) "launch your scent into the Internet."
And then there are the old wives' tales, such as wearing red panties to increase your allure or sneaking your personal scent into food (don't ask) or Glamour's time-honored classic "engagement chicken."
Posted by: East New York at May 14, 2009 3:17 PM

What is kickball? I used to play soccer (badly) in a zogpsports league & noticed they had another league for 'kickball'..
Posted by: etson at May 14, 2009 4:17 PM
Kickball is essentially baseball - but instead of using a small ball and bat, a large rubber ball is rolled and kicked.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 14, 2009 4:19 PM
Soccer is a sport, etson. Kickball is not. Children play it. These hipsters might as well be playing wiffleball or jacks.

I am neither a child nor a hipster, and played kickball last weekend at a birthday party in Prospect Park. It was a manly game, complete with diving catches (beers in hand, suds flying), balls thrown at baserunners, and so on - last year's game featured a classic home plate collision. The birthday kid in question is 31.

Maybe....I have to admit, he's got some nasty stuff. I probably couldn't hit him any longer 'cause my skills have eroded (I'm sad to admit). Still, this was the way we played Wiffle Ball where I'm from - hardball style! I was pretty good, too, and not intimidated by hard throwers. The best thing about Wiffle Ball is it teaches you to hit breaking pitches.

kickball actually IS a lot of fun, especially if you like baseball but you have no talent at throwing or hitting. used to play that as a kid in the projects in jersey. i dont know about the ones playing in that other thread about it. something tells me they probably pick teams based on perceived levels of coolness and how you dress or something.
