Gowanus Super 8 Opening Soon
The latest entry into the crowded Gowanus hotel field will be a Super 8 on the corner of President Street and 3rd Avenue. The building's looked fairly complete for awhile now, and according to a rep from Wyndham Hotel Group (Super 8 is a Wyndham brand), it's "tentatively" scheduled to open on June 29th. No word yet on room rates. GMAP

Who exactly is it that stays at a Super 8 in Gowanus?
Posted by: alsawo at May 26, 2009 10:43 AM
The same people that pick up women at the Third Ave brothel... guess they need a place to go.
Posted by: denton at May 26, 2009 10:56 AM
Um, yeah. Because tourists coming to NYC wanna stay in Gowanus. Riiiiiiigght. SRO anyone?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 11:15 AM
Getting 'rack' rates are meaningless quotes. Hotels/motels are like airline seats. Call 1 minute and get 1 price -call ten minutes later get another. All based on quickly changing supply/demand.
Who will stay there? anyone who is 'price sensitive'...that is if going to save $25 a night they'll go for it, whether tourist or small businessperson. Subway access 1 avenue east and walkable to interesting neighborhoods.

are you sure this isn't a new HOD?
Posted by: sam at May 26, 2009 11:23 AM
i think the one who will laugh last is the chain.
200,000 people in walking distance, broadway in 25-30 minutes and all anyone here can do is dredge up gowanus circa 1987 references.
anyone who yaps about an SRO hasnt been paying attention.
Posted by: bkn4life at May 26, 2009 11:25 AM
*i* want to stay there. i do. very much.
Posted by: i disagree at May 26, 2009 11:36 AM
Oh, Bkn4life, don't get your panties in a bunch. It's called sarcasm.

Not everyone has the bucks to stay in a fancy NYC hotel. Even the Brooklyn Marriott is pretty high-priced. For a lot of people, like small businesspeople in for interviews/meetings/short-time work or people or average means visiting family, or kids in college, these sorts of hotels are a viable option. The NYC hotel market in general is very much underserved compare with other large cities, and if you think about it a "Super 8" should be quite appropriate in Gowanus. Makes sense from several angles, which is why you're seeing more of these.

"don't get your panties in a bunch"
I love that expression...
Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 12:01 PM
I personally dont get it - Sure there are plenty of people who need/wan to stay in a subway accessible motel for a low price in NYC (and be close to Manhattan) - BUT there are already 3 operating hotels within 5-10 blocks of this one, and at least 2 more under construction; PLUS Hotels in Manhattan are drastically cutting rates AND their are at least 3 large mid-level hotels under construction in Downtown Brooklyn....therefore the issue is not whether there is a market for these rooms - the issue is, is the market big enough for all these rooms - I think the answer is NO
Posted by: fsrg at May 26, 2009 12:19 PM
Ditto what fsrg said.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 26, 2009 12:24 PM
"is the market big enough for all these rooms - I think the answer is NO"
The market is definitely big enough. The question is at what price.
Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 12:24 PM
ENY - true - but I am assuming a price that allows for a profit which I am guessing has to be at a minimum north of $100...and therefore I still say - not a big enough market.
Posted by: fsrg at May 26, 2009 12:38 PM
I have lived in Brooklyn a long time and I would not be caught on that block after dark.
Posted by: sam at May 26, 2009 12:41 PM
"am assuming a price that allows for a profit"
Fsrg, I assume you understand that varies from hotel to hotel. You'd be surprised what hoteliers will do to fill rooms (there are MANY group booking opportnities open to savvy hotel operators in NYC).
More importantly, you can't assume that a randomly picked rate level will or won't result in a profit for a hotelier. One example - there are significant tax breaks and incentives available (from the state and federal govts and directly from utilities) for hotels that employ energy conservation measures/policies in their construction/operation. Just one way to save $$ and improve the bottom line. There are others.

Back from an extremely extended holiday/break from bstoner.
First of all...Sam...I walked on this block last night at around 10:30pm on my way back from a BBQ in Carroll Gardens. You, my friend are what we call a pussy if you wouldn't walk on this block after dark. Seriously man, it's really not sketchy.
On my walk yesterday down Union through the Gowanus at around 1pm, I passed by that Holiday Inn on Union between 3rd and 4th...there was a car load of Sex in the City look alikes getting out of a cab pulling up to the hotel, all looking around in amazement as scruffy hipsters passed by industrial warehouses on their bikes, the sun was shining...I heard one of them proclaim..."what a funky area...i love this"
I don't think some of you have been in Brooklyn so long, you no longer have a concept that it's many things to many people. This area is not only becoming a large artist and music enclave, but it's a 10 minute walk in any direction to other more established areas of retail/dining and bars.
And I HIGHLY recommend to all a break from this blog. Coming back to it makes one realize what a bubble this is and how EXTREMELY negative many people are. I hope to not get sucked into that again.

OY! He's back.
Mr know-it-all-the-rest-of-you-are-pussies-and-retards.
Honestly, he makes the What look like a gentleman.
11217, you should have stayed at the rehab clinic a little longer. Did your parents run out of money or did the therapists kick you out?
Posted by: sam at May 26, 2009 1:08 PM
I'm a know it all because you are scared to walk down President Street after dark? Ok dude. Sounds like you are the one who might need the therapists number. Ahhh brownstoner, oh how I've missed you.

M4L must be loving this!

So your other identity swine_flu, alleged 48 year resident of caroll gardens had you over? How darling..
> You, y friend are what we call a pussy
at least sam didn't ever run away and hide behind another login id like you did

Did they get a table at al di la as fast as you can??
> I don't think some of you have been in Brooklyn so long
this is coming from a psycho who hasn't lived in brooklyn for so long

No clue what your problem is Park Dope, but your message is nearly unintelligible to me.
This blog has turned into trash.

Children, children, please take your fight to the Open Thread!
Oh, and welcome back, 11217.
Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at May 26, 2009 1:41 PM
Thanks 6years. I'm really trying to keep negativity to a minimum (a couple weeks in Argentina helped for sure) but I think I'm planning to be more of a lurker with an occasional comment to keep down on the extreme animosity some people here have. In looking over Park Dope's comments, he/she seems to literally comment only on my posts and seems to follow my every word. I'm flattered, but the aggressive and childish behavior is really not something I want to partake in anymore.
I chose to comment on this thread because I just passed the Super 8 last night and find it really odd that someone who has lived in Brooklyn for so long, would be scared to walk by here at night. Didn't mean to start a war about it.

this is not possible as 11217 says he never reads the Open Thread, even tho he knows everything about it...but he can log in as swine_flu and meet me there if he desires.

weird. i went to actually see the gowanus canal for the first time this weekend and as i was walking my dog he started barking at something. i looked over the bridge and a long blonde wig was floating in the canal!
*rob*

don't be drawn in by the insults 11217. Welcome back.
And you're right (but try to use different expression).
Sounds more like a snob than a whatever if claims wouldn't be caught dead walking down President/3rd avenue.
back in eighties I would walk home later evening most nights
from Park Slope to C.G. down Union/president/carroll and never did I experience/witness and crime nor ever felt threatened or anxious.
Posted by: Petebklyn at May 26, 2009 1:50 PM
Yay, 11217 is back!
Posted by: LincolnSlope at May 26, 2009 1:52 PM
This hotel will do well if it is priced correctly. I live close to a similar shitbox off the beaten trail hotel and it does well due to parental visitors of people in the neighborhood and tourists who are a little more "in the know" and don't need to stay in a times square hotel.

11217!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YAY!!! you are back!!!
Posted by: gemini10 at May 26, 2009 2:04 PM
ENY - virtually all these Motels were built in the last 5 years that means that it cost a minimum of $150-$200 per sq ft to build- plus the land costs which could have ranged from $50-$100 per buildable foot. I dont care what kind of tax incentives, ikea furniture, slave labor or green energy they are using - you simply cannot make any real $ on less than $100 a night and even then you'd need near full occupancy.....
Posted by: fsrg at May 26, 2009 2:35 PM
I bet these will be priced starting @ 200 per night - which is what Hotel Le Bleu (or whatever it's called) is at right now.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at May 26, 2009 2:49 PM
I imagine they'll easily get more than $100/night, fsrg.
Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 3:59 PM
If Le Blue is at $200 a night (and it is often empty - I can see it from my home) then I think it wont be so easy for a Super 8 to "Easily" fill the place up at a price north of $100; and this is before tons of new rooms come online all over the area.
Posted by: fsrg at May 26, 2009 5:19 PM
"(and it is often empty - I can see it from my home)"
You can see inside the hotel's rooms and tell it's "empty" from your home?
I think it wont be so easy for a Super 8 to "Easily" fill the place up at a price north of $100;
OK, we can wait until a month after it opens, and I'll check the rate and report back. We'll see.
Posted by: East New York at May 26, 2009 5:44 PM
Just because Le Blue has a fancy french name doesn't mean super 8 will be any less nice.
Le Blue and Le Jolie (in the burg) are pretty much the same quality of a super 8/holiday inn etc. Not saying that's bad, but it is what it is.
