Fulton Mall Arby's Revealed

After the Landmark Preservation Commission's rejection of the proposal for an Arby's restaurant in the landmarked interior space at 374 Fulton Street on Tuesday, we managed to infiltrate the inner sanctums of the LPC to obtain a photo of the rendering and plans that the commissioners were looking at when they made their decision. The rendering above shows where the franchisee proposed removing two of the mirrored arcades to make way for the ordering counter and neon signs. Check out a floorplan here.

Ugly!
But how could a fast food outlet do any better? I think Arby's will soon be looking for another space.

from your lips to Arby's HQ ears!

Wow, that's hideous. Why is there scaffolding in a rendering?

I'm fine. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Sadly, this will probably end up being one of their highest grossing stores.

Emphasis on gross.

Heather,
The scaffolding is probably there to support the lighted menu, so that it doesn't have to be fastened to the landmarked wall. That's a good idea, I suppose, but the fact that the designers chose to highlight this as a design element, instead of using supports that didn't call attention to themselves, shows hoe incapable they are of building within a historic interior.

Velvet rope - nice touch.

That's the nicest Arby's I've ever seen.

Why in the world would they choose to lease this landmarked interior for an Arby's? Aren't there other available spaces in the immediate vicinity that wouldn't pose the problems G&T's landmarked interior creates. Really bad business decision.

could end up being highest Arby's because I don't think any of them are very busy. Surprised they still are in business at all.
Yet, that great revolving door they have as entrance isn't too inviting for fast food outlet. Try getting your stroller and brood thru that.

That is truly horrific. Again, why on earth would they even think of such a thing -- just seems like more hassle than it's worth. Unfortunately, it seems that the owners of the space doesn't care very much about it -- that is the real tragedy. Why don't they sell (hopefully to someone interested in preserving the space and in using it appropriately)?

Just leave the space vacant...

we're scraping bottom, it's true. but some day, some day, the tide will return and a fine restaurant will open there. I'm sure of it.

Why on earth would Arby's lease this space in the first place? Didn't their RE division tell them how unsuitable it would be? Surely there are other vacant properties available in the Fulton mall? It's hard to imagine how they could ever come up with a design to satisfy LPC and, even if they did, I shudder to think about the damage that could be caused to this fabulous interior just from ordinary wear and tear.
