Development Watch: Atlantic Terminal Station

There's a bit of progress to report at the incredibly slow-moving Atlantic Terminal Station, which has been under construction for what seems like a million years at this point. The brick and glass on its facade now look quite a bit like the rendering for the station, so perhaps it's actually nearing completion...though we wouldn't bet on it.

I guess I'm not the only one who has marveled at the snail's pace of this relatively small project...and yes, I know, it includes MTA infrastructure, but still...
And if it takes Raffle and Co. THIS LONG to do an atrium entryway, how long will it take to build an arena?

methinks this whole area will end up like laguardia. always under meaningless pathetically slow construction. sure wouldnt want this crew working on anythng actually important.

I'll likely be collection Social Security by the time they get to the finishing touches on this. What a train wreck.

So, does anyone know a reasonable way from the subway station to Target that does not involve (1) going on the LIRR platform or (2) going outside?
I keep thinking "there has to be a better way!" but maybe I'm just looking for a northwest passage that doesn't exist.

BrooklynGreene - this is not an FCR project.
Not that I'm really pro-arena, but get the facts straight.

NSR, you have to go on the LIRR platform to exit the subway no matter what. (Unless you use the Pacific exit or the Q exit in the clock tower, but then you have to go outside.)

Thanks zinka. I was afraid of that...
I usually exit via Pacific since I live on that side of flatbush.
The route through the LIRR platform always feels like I'm scuttling through some dilapidated alley or something.

are the plans to have a subway/lirr entrance from outside on hanson? i have to go through the office tower during the week and then take the elevator on the weekends when the office is closed. its ridiculous.
Posted by: Amelia at May 28, 2009 3:58 PM
rob -- lol, but if this station were in Manhattan, it would have better exits and some escalators (which would break down 4 days a week, but that's another issue...)
Posted by: northsloperenter at May 28, 2009 4:03 PM
don't worry about it northsloper. rob is a sad sad man.
Posted by: randolph at May 28, 2009 4:29 PM
Amelia, you used to be able to access the station from the Q entrance in the clock tower. That has been closed "temporarily through summer 2007" for a while. Presumably it will reopen when the station is done.

There was also an entrance from the street across from the Williamsburgh Bank Building, but it's been closed for years...

I know I've said it before, but they renovated all of One Hanson and converted it to condos and they still have yet to complete this project. I'm really surprised also that the elevator is even up to code -- it's the sketchiest thing I've ever seen.

good point heather. add to the list torren, avalon, everything on atlantic, 4th ave....
Posted by: randolph at May 28, 2009 5:18 PM
Who says that the elevator is up to code?

That place is just a mess to get through. As for the LIRR component, well let's just say that it's the only train station I can think of that doesn't have a clock anywhere near the arrival/departure board. Simply amazing...

That's a GREAT photo in slick's NYT story link!

Flatbushrising,
I'm sure you're correct. But do you mean to tell me that although Raffles et al own the building and mall, the fare-payers are still stuck paying for that slower than molasses atrium entrance which will serve the mall in part?
Ridiculous.
As I always remember in Manhattan, building owners who wanted to do things with subway entrances when it was to their advantage, had to cough up some serious dough to make it happen...maybe I'm wrong.
Did FCR at least have to set aside monies in the original budget which the MTA is using for the entrance creation?
For all intents and purposes, and from the streetscape view, the entrance appears to be part of the mall.
Why am I even bothering to care? Same old story...

Even when it's done, they're probably leave a sidewalk "bridge" up for anther year or two... just to make sure it looks like crap for as long as possible.
I have to say, this city seems to be alone in the world for being so tolerant for crappy looking, seemingly endless construction.
I have a suggestion -- If you can't do it right and do it in a reasonable time... DON'T START!!
Posted by: tybur6 at May 28, 2009 6:32 PM
I hope is is done soon, but looking at this snail pace of construction; I could only feel that the MTA think Brooklyn is one big slum. Every time I come home from Fire Island on Sunday you need to wait 20minutes for the train connection. Sometimes I just go to Penn and take the Subway. The MTA give Brooklyn sub-par service.

What’s missing in that artistic rendering are figures of pedestrians, down on their knees in grateful prayer after having survived one of the worst street crossings in Brooklyn
