Community Garden Spotlight: Summit Street Garden

We have exactly been deluged with community garden submissions since we asked for them last week. A fun one did roll in yesterday though: The Summit Street Community Garden. Located at the corner of Summit and Columbia Streets in Red Hook, the garden was established in 1994 through the efforts of many people in the community, who literally dragged toilets, old tires and trash out of several adjoining abandoned lots; it's now run in partnership with the New York City Parks Department and Green Thumb. From the looks of this photo, it attracts a lot of visitors too! Lots more photos on the garden's Flickr page.

I love this garden - it always gives me ideas on my way to Gowanus Nursery, a block away.

I think I still would consider this Carroll Gardens. It's a lovely garden with an attack cat that is a dog hater.

Oooh, do you mean the cat with half a tail? He lives across the street, he's a real sweetie. If it's on the other side of the BQE, it's Red Hook, isn't it? Walking over the BQE is crossing over to the magical world of swingles and sea air. And salt pile menaces.

And this is one of about 10 community gardens in the Columbia Street Waterfront District.

zoning wise, it's Red Hook, community wise, it's Red Hook, attitude wise, it's Red Hook...realtor wise, well, it's anything they want to call it! oh, and the cat doesn't attack all dogs, just most. :)
