Closing Bell: Brooklyn Kickballers Blocked

The much talked about Brooklyn Kickball League has hit a snag this season. The Brooklyn Paper reports that some newly planted trees, as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Million Trees program, has forced the league to reconfigure the fields which puts players at risk of colliding with each other in the outfield. The city says they didn't plant the trees in that location out of malice. Some of the players want the trees moved, while others say just keep playing around them. Kickballer Brian Riccardi adds that "hopefully there are no collisions, but considering our steady diet of PBR, someone is bound to get hurt."

You might be a hipster if.....
You play in a kickball league at McCarren Park

We played kickball in the street when I was about 9. Lame.

haha Dave - was rubber invented yet or did you use rocks from the quarry? ;)

We used hippies heads. They were called hippies back then, not hipsters and they were far, far less annoying.

Rob, you made me laugh. Not that I condone such behavior.

haha rob - tell us how you really feel!!

wow! cynical! people having fun together outside and getting exercise. it's sweet. there's baseball and tennis right next to this area and the soccer and running track across the street. why is one sport superior? silly.
anyway, the new trees are terrific - they add to the huge additions made last year. doubt anyone is taking them down, but i do feel bad for these 20 somethings.

they should move the games to fort greene park, go to war with the football players. that would be something to see...

no doubt wine lover - come on guys - you know if this league was in Prospect Park you'd be all over it.
The new trees are nice - i'm more upset there will be no more pool parties this summer.

"go to war with the football players. that would be something to see..."
There's actually ALOT of football players (i assume you mean soccer) who play at McC Park from the southside of the nabe. Alot of em are actually very good and fun to watch.

Why would we need another sport where you can't use your hands? Isn't soccer enough? This is a misguided amalgamation of soccer and baseball, and, in my opinion, un-American.

The trees will make it tougher to play kickball, soccer, or other sports in the outfield when a game is going on on the baseball field

I've played in the league for the past 3 years. Its harmless... just a bunch of folks having fun in the park on Sundays. Anybody (blogs, etc) who says anything else is just a HATER and needs to get away from their computer screen for a bit and reassess their interpretation of fun community sports and recreation. I've met some great friends, as well as my girlfriend of almost 2 yrs through McCarren kickball sundays.
Are there a few annoying hipsters there? Yes. But for the most part its just a group of fun-loving yuppies blowing off steam outside in the sun, playing a game where athletic prowess and fierce competition aren't the main focus.
As far as the trees, we've reconfigured the fields and will work around it. No biggie.

A co-ed sport where the women weigh more then the men.
