Closing Bell: Amalfi Coast, Here We Come

We haven't had a real vacation since we started Brownstoner over four years ago and after the last five months of writing the site almost entirely by ourselves while juggling Flea-related responsibilities, we are beat. So tomorrow we're heading out with Mrs. B and a few friends (sans kids) to the Amalfi Coast for a week. We may write a few posts on the local architecture while we're there, but by and large we'll be leaving the blog in the extremely capable hands of Gabby Warshawer who, many of you will remember, played an integral editorial role in the site in 2007 and 2008. We look forward to returning full of blogging vim and Flea vigor. Ciao!

Wow. Looks fabulous. There's some little shack on a hairpin turn above the ocean right outside Amalfi that has wonderful sea snails and grilled fish. Moderately priced.

Bon voyage...great destination and the weather should be good. Been there a few times myself and the food, shopping and sightseeing are top shelf!

You've certainly earned it. Hope you have great weather.

Very funny, what.
Have a great trip Mr. B. Looking forward to the first Amalfistoner post.

That depends on whether they have Asshats in Italy, since you know we gravitate towards Asshat-heavy areas...Actually, What, your comment just inspired us to register the domain amalficoaster.com, so maybe you'll be rid of us after all! If not, the domain should be worth something in the after-market. Not a bad url at all...

Have a great trip! The Amalfi Coast might just be the most beautiful place on earth... (Make sure you hit Pompeii and Paestum while you're there)
Posted by: GHB at May 21, 2009 4:31 PM
If we ever wanted to sell our house, that would be quite a marketing gimmick: The What as the exclusive broker on Brownstoner's Brownstone. Imagine the press coverage. Fuhgeddaboudit!
Posted by: brownstoner at May 21, 2009 4:34 PM
Must go to Netunos for Gelato on Brioche in Salerno! Have a wonderful time. Amalfi Coast is truly amazing. Ask someone in Amalfi how to get to the Private Beach-there is a boat that takes you-only the locals know about this!
Posted by: jodaroma at May 21, 2009 4:34 PM
We'll be staying in a house in Praiano. Have a day trip planned to Capri and to Paestem. Look for a Paestum blog post towards the end of the week...
Posted by: brownstoner at May 21, 2009 4:36 PM
Enjoy your trip. I just got back it was amazing. I attended a wedding on the May 16th @. I left NY on the 15th via Euroflyusa.com. It was the only airline that would get me there for Saturday Morning since I was leaving on fri. I returned on the 19th via Alitalia. I can't wait to return since the visit was so short. I also stayed @ casangelina.com I'm sure you have your trip already booked but have fun. Food, View, Coast, People totally amazing....
Posted by: GenaB at May 21, 2009 4:54 PM
er, ehm, I'll be going to PS1 and then, if the weather holds, Studio Square, the new biergarten in Queens. Probably back in the office on Monday. You know, just in case you were wondering....
Posted by: altervoce at May 21, 2009 4:54 PM
Very deserved. Enjoy!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at May 21, 2009 4:55 PM
Don't you think you should at least GMAP your location? I'm not sure Gabby will be able to watch your kids and run the blog. Who do we contact if the Open Thread catches fire and burns down?
P.S. Thought you ought to know that I saw The What at the Register's Office this afternoon. He was talking to a clerk about transferring a deed or title or something like that...

Enjoy and we'll look forward to your Amalfi posts!
Posted by: babs at May 21, 2009 5:23 PM
Enjoy Praiano - it's a great, quiet town. Try and make it to La Africana and don't let the church bells of St. Luca keep you up all night.
And for a great meal, try Armandino's down by the beach - http://www.trattoriadaarmandino.it/
Posted by: lambretta76 at May 21, 2009 5:23 PM
Che bello per voi. Sono cosi gelosa!
You must oreder the favorite local dish - scoglio which is shell fish in pasta. Also the limoncello is some Italy's finest.
For an interesting night out visit the Africana club. Its built into the side of a cliff and half of the dance floor is made of glass so you can look down into the ocean and watch the fishies swim while you cut a rug.
For an off the beaten path trip visit the town of Ravello.
Have a great time and please post pics when you come back.

As a parting and a thank you for all these years of enjoying your site, a couple of very good restaurant suggestions:
Don Alfonso 1890 In Sant'Agata dei due Golfi www.donalfonso1890.com one if the best restaurants in the South, for a real splurge!
or Taverna del Capitano www.tavernadelcapitano.it also not shabby, if you can find Marina di Cantone...
In Maiori : Il faro di Capo D'orso, www.capodorso.org fantastic views and excellent food (fish)
In Minori, for great fish : L'Arsenale tel 089851418
In Positano, apart from Il San Pietro, Da Vincenzo touristy by sight, but not foodwise! Let me know if you go to any of the above and... Buone vacanze!
Posted by: bianca at May 21, 2009 5:55 PM
LOL, altervoce. Me too. Plus you know taking out the garbage, etc.
Posted by: mopar at May 21, 2009 6:27 PM
bring back plenty of pictures of bathrooms and kitchens!
Posted by: mcKenzie at May 21, 2009 6:39 PM
I think the Amalfi Coast is one of the nicest parts of Park Slope.
Posted by: mcKenzie at May 21, 2009 6:43 PM
Jealous!
Hope you get to spend some time in Ravello. And if you're serious about amalficoaster -- we've been serious about this exact move -- maybe you should check out Gore Vidal's old place which I recently heard was back on the market:

now THAT"S a blog!
Posted by: Ringo at May 21, 2009 6:43 PM
Carbon buy back, Anyone?
Well, enjoy. May is a good time to go. Good weather generally, and the crowds aren't there yet.
If you're not too familiar with Italy, you may be surprised by the comparative luxuriousness of (even normal) residential bathrooms when seen against the hideousness of public ones.
As ever, stop using "we". The editorial first person plural sounds especially odd: "So tomorrow we're heading out with Mrs. B..."
That sounds like the kind of mistake native French speakers make in English, even those extremely profcient in English, when using that construction.

pssssst... u know what they say.. while the cat's away! jk hahaha. im sure gabby and what will have this place on maximum lockdown (which is actually kinda hot when u think about it)

You'd rather go to the Amalfi Coast than our house tour on the 31st?
I find that hard to understand, since everyone knows that PLG is paradise ;-)
Posted by: Bob Marvin at May 21, 2009 7:03 PM
Jealous!!! Have a great time, eat tons of good food and be sure to post pics for us asshats stuck in Brooklyn!
Oh, and don't underestimate having the What as the exclusive broker for your brownstone if you sell. I can just see him cursing out and busting the heads of folks who dare bid a ridiculous price....think seller's revenge!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 21, 2009 7:36 PM
Oh, and Mckenzie is right....that end of Super East Park Slope is gorgeous this time of year. I've never met you, but I sure hope you and the Mrs. are quite tall and model-like - it will help with those restaurants that have a wait time for tables :)
(sorry, couldn't resist)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at May 21, 2009 7:38 PM
heads up! ill broker any house for like two hundred dollars. and get it SOLD LOL ugh im waiting for the cable guy since 5pm! he has a window until 9. zzzzz

"If we ever wanted to sell our house, that would be quite a marketing gimmick: The What as the exclusive broker on Brownstoner's Brownstone. Imagine the press coverage. Fuhgeddaboudit!"
But it will sell at full price and I would get 6% commission!

If you want to have dinner in Positano, Donna Rosa is really great. It's way up high on the mountain so you have to take a cab. My husband and I really loved it.

Hope you didn't leave your kids with the What(ever)

PLEASE stop by Atrani and Positano, arguably the most lovely stops during your Amalfi excursion. Ciao :)

you're going to make a day trip to Pompeii I hope.

The What selling Brownstoner's house would make a GREAT Bravo reality show. I'm just saying...
Have fun on your well-earned vacation!

Get drunk. A lot!
Posted by: bupe at May 22, 2009 8:00 AM
A bit late, but congratulations for being able to get away. Have a great time. My brother and sister-in-law honeymooned there, and they absolutely loved it. Che bella!
Sono cosi geloso! Diverti, lo meritate.

I've never been to the Amalfi Coast, but from what I've seen on the PBS show Visions of Italy, it looks spectacular. Have a wonderful time.
Posted by: Biff Champion at May 22, 2009 8:40 AM
Excellent choice! As BrooklynGreene warns - watch out for the non-residential bathrooms. The gas station ones are sometimes a hole in the floor that you place your feet either side of. Seems incongurous with the excellence of the wine, food and opera.
Keep your eye open for rustic objects & stuff which might be everyday there but unusual here.
BTW, I'm all for use of the royal "we".
Bon voyage

Are there sharks off the Amalfi Coast?

Loan sharks
Posted by: dittoburg at May 22, 2009 10:27 AM
Rent a little boat in Atrani and explore the little caves all over the coast. I second trying to get a look at Gore Vidal's house in Ravello. I got a tour of it when I was there once and it's pretty spectacular. It's called La Rondinaia. Ask a local to show you where it is. While in Ravello you must eat dinner at Cumpa Cusimo! Ciao Ciao!

"Loan sharks"
Damn, I should have known that was coming. Can't "jump" those kind of sharks.
I've only been to Venezia, Fiorenze and Roma. I'll have to see what this Amalfi coast is all about (is that where the spectacular, crazy-driven coastal highway is?) and then head down to Pompei, Naples and Sicily. I dig the boot.
