217 Court Coming Down?

217-Court-Street-050809.jpg
According to Lost City (and the reader who sent in the photo at left), Court Street was blocked off this morning to make way for the a large crane that will be, reportedly, involved in the demolition of the building. "The word from the surveyors is: It's coming down!" writes LC. "Has to come down. No choice. Too damaged. The constant rain was the likely culprit." These photos are a couple of hours old. Any update? GMAP

since it is not in the historic district there is nothing stopping demolition. Maybe a nice modern building without crapastic fire escapes will be built on the site.

LOL! or one of those frightening "the hulk" type of buildings will little slit windows for eyes and a double-height coin slot as an entrance.

just you wait - a scarano bldg is my prediction. no way they are going to leave a hole in the ground on prime court street. i bet the ink on that DoB set is already dry!

I suggest young architect be on the design committee to ensure no stagnation.

Yeah, Thursday morning at about 3am the roof collapsed (across the street from my apt). I think it was abandoned anyway, so it's almost certainly coming down. My question: why do two dozen cops have to be stationed around the site at all times?! Budget deficit, anyone?

I hear the real estate market is hot hot on court street (?)

Is this the building where the drug rehab place "was?"

Posted by: g man at May 8, 2009 2:49 PM

I read somewhere amongst the blogs that it's the 3-story annex in the back that is coming down. You can see the annex from the satellite images on Google Maps.

This must be right near Fish Tales, no????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2009 2:50 PM

Was this the union meeting hall ?

Posted by: oldtimer at May 8, 2009 3:05 PM

Down the street from Fish Tales. Next to the Thai restaurant Joya.

cmu - what is your problem?

"The constant rain was the likely culprit"

It's not like we've had torrential downpours. That seems like a pretty lame reason for a building to collapse.

Posted by: broadwayron at May 8, 2009 3:30 PM

Lame indeed. And speaking of lame, be sure to check out the YouTube link above.

Trust me, when it collapsed, the rain was coming down so hard that it could have been a monsoon. I heard it, and thought a tree had fallen, so I am not surprised a building with a methadone clinic (not abandoned) was unstable enough that it collapsed in heavy rain. Roofs are not indestructable.

Posted by: Cobblehillbaby at May 8, 2009 3:45 PM

Babe, thanks for (indirectly) answering my question. I put "was" in quotation marks because demolition of the building will put the clinic in the past tense in the near future.

Posted by: g man at May 8, 2009 3:53 PM

maybe the cops are protecting the methadone.

"That seems like a pretty lame reason for a building to collapse."

Yep, especially since the real excuse is letting go UNTIL it needs to be demo'd. But get's darn costly when HPD has to do it...and bill the developer...or Dept. of Finance puts a lien on the property.

Search 18-20 Jackson Ave on Mr. B's site.

Or 214 25th St post from last week. Walked by that horror show today...the GC removed all the floor joists before skating. That brick box has no interior support. Hope DOB gets HPD out there real soon, other that just writing new violations. Someone is going to get hurt walking to the 25th St. R stop at 4th Ave.

FYI the demolition appears to be done as the crane has left the building and the front of the building still stands....

I noticed that the three houses on warren(?)baltic(?-sorry, I can never keep the cross streets straight--and i've lived around there for 15 years!) going towards smith were also posted with notices to vacate, so the makes me think that the real problem is in the back, not the front. But seriously, a patrol car parked in front since Saturday night? A bizarre waste of resources.
