TONY Prize for General Greene

general-greene-TONY-0409.jpgGeneral Greene only opened last June, and already it's won a major award from the epicureans at Time Out NY. As part of the unfortunately-named Eat Out Awards, General Greene was given props for being the "Best new neighborhood joint in Brooklyn." We won't argue with that: We've had two great experiences there and one slightly disappointing one, though some blame lies with us on that last one for not ordering more indulgently. But it's not like the restaurant even really needs TONY's attention: When we passed by Saturday in the middle of the day, the brunch line was spilling out onto the street. Other nominees in the category included Char No. 4, Five Leaves, Walter Foods.

I had a very bad experience there under cooked food. Did not like it at all. The service was great but I will never go there again...

It's a mystery how General Greene became so overrated. It's not that good, and incredibly overpriced. I'm not the only one who feels this way -- check Yelp.

Worse place in the hood. Over-rated and over-prices. Better off at the new Public House or Lou Lou.

Yes we tried to get in last Saturday and we were told there was a 40 min wait.... We turned around and went to Ici were there were a few tables open and we had a truly excellent brunch.... Mistery of trends!!!

I concur with the above statements. Severely overpriced and under-portioned. I am not a fan of the "small plates" phenomenon in general, and these were even smaller than most. And those infuriating jelly jars for beer glasses! what are they, maybe 8 ounces for 7 bucks!?! There are too many other good places in the neighborhood, I wouldn't go back.

Click through to the original review. The original reviewer panned it. Haven't been there myself.

General Greene is just not good. I have eaten there 3 times, trying to figure out what I'm missing, and the truth is, nothing. The food is incredibly bland and underseasoned. And the fact that they are praised for their burger is unbelievable! It looks and tastes ike a burger you'd get at an average afternoon bbq. And the accompanying potato chips just add insult to injury.

It's all right, but has a few legitimate knocks as commented on above. The magic of style over substance and having friends in the media like NY Mag has worked here.

Agree with the above. General Greene is just not good. I have eaten there 3 times, trying to figure out what the hype is, and I just don't get it. Not going back a fourth time to figure it out. The food is incredibly bland and underseasoned. And the fact that they are praised for their burger is unbelievable! It looks and tastes like a burger you'd get at an average afternoon bbq. The accompanying potato chips and white bread Wonder bun just add insult to injury.

What? I don't get it! I really and truly don't get it. General Green SUCKS! With so many genuinely good restaurants in the hood, I'd hate for folks to think it's the best we have to offer. Bleh!

yea...but the brunch is pretty good.

i think the bottom line is...go there for brunch.

Agree, General Greene is both disgusting and overpriced.

Best new restaurant in Brooklyn is El Almacen at the Bedford L stop, but nobody's heard of it. Thank god, because it's already difficult to get into.

Best PR job I've ever seen. The food is mediocre at best, seriously, "Beets with goat cheese"? No fish on the menu? Decor is cheap and bar seats are most uncomfortable. Service should be great because they have one waiter(ress) per table. I can't imagine any of the staff making money. Basically this happened with the help of New York Magazine, whom for some reason published 2 or 3 stories about this scam of a restaurant. I will bet that there is a family, love or kick-back connection with someone at the magazine. Anyway, I will never go back, no way no how...

My 2cts.

I've noticed that in general you should not to go with NY mag if the review is TOO positive. The better places tend to get more reserved compliments. The places that NY MAG or the NY TIMES fall in undying love with are probably connected to the editors/publisher in some way...
