Streetlevel: Atlantic Avenue Shell Station Open Again

shell-station-0409.jpg
The removal of four subterranean gasoline tanks now complete, the Shell Station opened a week ago right on schedule much to the relief of area drivers. In late February, the Cobble Hill Blog reported that the work permits required that the job be finished within two months and so it looks like they just made it!

stop driving

Nice to have them open again. Still the most expensive gas around, but convenience always has a premium...

these guys are MAJOR Crooks!!
I had started using them when AAA towed me there after I broke down. The first time I used them I got a laundry list of stuff they wanted to do. Very expensive. Another time when I was closing on a house I discovered I had an outstanding parking ticket that was unpaid for over a year. Turns out when my car was at this service station for repair, they left it on the street and it got a ticket. They never told me and must have thrown it out. Very shady place indeed....

I'll second the "crooks", but for a different reason: these guys seem to use the annual inspection as a ruse to get more work (surprise, surprise, I know). We used them two years in a row, and amazingly the struts went out in front one year, and in the back the next. When my wife picked up the car, she noticed a huge stack of receipts on the desk, almost all for struts.

I think they could have at least squeezed in a few condos out back.

I also wish to say: Stop Driving!

(the roads are too crowded and I hate to be stuck in traffic jams)

I'd rather walk 10 blocks to the next gas station then be forced to use their full service station.

"stop driving" is silly. like, stop using your electricity and water and eating since they all cause polluting activities.

I'm glad they re-opened this. I needed a place to fill up heading on/off the bridge.

Thanks for the intelligence, tomgee and neilw! I'll only be stopping there for gas!

Posted by: East New York at April 27, 2009 3:01 PM

goldie, get real. We have the best public transit in America. No one here needs to be driving.

Posted by: zinka at April 27, 2009 3:08 PM

I'm sorry to see that they reopened. I'll second the strut comments. They will not install self-supplied parts and charge you 100% markup for the same part.

At least the condo developers only screw you once rather than on an ongoing basis.

BEWARE: They will constantly identify 'issues' with parts that are worn but not out of norm; you have no inexpensive way of determining the accuracy of their diagnosis. Their labor rates are much higher than the norm, and their parts are 100% over wholesale.

I won't be going back.

The last time I checked the pumps are run by different people than the service facility.

The service guys, where AAA would tow you, are known to be a bit on the shady side.

The guys running the pumps are independent of the mechanics, and I've always had a good experience with them. The mechanics... not so much...

"We have the best public transit in America. No one here needs to be driving."

Right. Because your fellow riders will be so happy to see you get on the subway with your sheetrock and lumber and buckets of joint compound from Home Depot.

I had the same situation when I let AAA tow my disabled car there instead of a reputable mechanic. They gave me an estimate twice what it should cost. They refused to release the car to me unless I paid them for the estimate. I paid the fee had the car towed to my regular mechanic who got it running for a fair price. I then complained to AAA who said that I could have got a free tow to any shop within three miles, they refunded the estimate charge and said that they dropping them as a AAA franchise.
There are so few mechanic in that I area I don't see that they need to be crooked. They should do pretty well by just doing a good job for a fair price.

The good service stations were further down on Atlantic near the jail. Both were closed and torn down. Now both sites are vacant lots. Ah progress!

"No one here needs to be driving."

There are lots of neighborhoods in NYC that aren't served by good public transportation and where having a car is basically a necessity.

I third the fact that they are crooks. You get caught up in their web if you ever call tripleA. Stay as far away as possible!!

There is a sign telling you the price of gas. Just drive to a station that sells at a much lower price.
