Today's FGVOTD comes to us from the band whom the Beatles tried to imitate but could never duplicate (that's a joke, folks). But there is no question this band was a lot of fun.
In this clip, not only can one see why Davy Jones, through his smooth dancing moves, was a teenage heartthrob; one can also appreciate why he has been hailed as a genius with the tambourine. Nobody played the instrument so perfectly from a technical standpoint, but he put more sole into it than Linda McCartney, Stevie Nicks and all Davy's followers ever could.
This video is also meant to make it up to jessibaby, whose FGVOTD was cut short yesterday.

"Is it safe to enter?" speaks the Asshat from the ghetto.

Come on in, everybody.
The water's warm.

"safe to enter?" - depends if you got the right protection or how much risk you're willing to take

I loaded up on Open Thread Default Swaps yesterday and now I'm gonna have to sell them at a huge loss.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 9:24 AM
good morning everyone,
fellow wanna be Asshat here. Can I come in too?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 9:25 AM
DIBS, hold onto those swaps. The contagen(s) could strike again
Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 9:27 AM
i know it's terrible, but have you ever wanted to see a business close so badly that it hurts you in your joints!?! there is this store around the corner from me on spring street in soho called Pylones.. back in like 2002 they took over a former salvation army. i LOVED that salvation army cuz id go on my lunch break everyday and find the best stuff!!! thrifts can be hit or miss, but if you hit one everyday and you get in good with the people behind the counter you get some great stuff! and i was, for like a whole year and a half or so until this stupid store took over. what do they sell? stupid things that no one wants. 200 dollar lime green spoon sets with frogs on them. cheese graters in the shape of princesses. ridiculously over priced mood rings that don't work! i mean seriously. that store is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO going down and i can't wait.
Dipster, you work on the same block. chant with me.
Goodbye Pylones
Goodbye Pylones
Goodbye Pylones! woo woo
i hope all these idiotic stores that sprouted up like syphillis during the boom times all do down in flames like they should.
(of course that would mean 3/4's of 5th avenue in park slope lol but oh well)

m4l, I've applied for TARP (Total Asshat Retard Protection). Whatever stupid trades I make will be covered by the taxpayer.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 9:31 AM
So there is a beautiful row of limestones around the corner from me and all were occupied until one day last week I passed by and one is completely gutted all the way to the beams. Walls and windows are gone and roof has a few holes in it. It seemed pretty strange to me because I didn't notice anyone actually gutting it. When I appoached the door, there are a few notices glued with Skeleton picture on them and some text along the lines of "poisoned area". Didn't approach too close so couldn't see.
Can you speculate what it can possibly be so that the whole house neeeded to be stripped while the ones attached to it are completely occupied?
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 9:35 AM
Bed bugs, Kens.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 9:37 AM
i would ignore the "poisoned area" notice. if your intention was to loot some stuff from there for your own renovations you will be fine. i think they only put those up to deter people who want to take stuff.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 30, 2009 9:38 AM
gack! dave could totally be right about the bedbugs thing. please ignore my previous post. do NOT take anything from there!!! hahah. i had a friend with bedbugs and it took him a year to realize wtf it was until i was like dude look at your walls and smashed a bug and blood squirted out. grooooooossss
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 30, 2009 9:41 AM
DIBS there was NOTHING left but brick and beams. Is that really necessary to get rid of bed bugs? I mean then the neighbors must have them but the attached house is occupied and no signs of expermination going on there or anything. Kids play outside most of the day now since the weather is nice.
Rob, there is nothing to loot. There are no FLOORS or STAIRS left!
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 9:41 AM
Thanks Biff for the video, I was singing along.
Yes, I feel bad that Jessi’s FGVOTD was cut short yesterday.
I still can’t believe that you saw her. When you first saw her did you have a big grin on your face and where you thinking this woman IS real....Oooooh, I want to meet now.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 9:41 AM
The poison notice was probably because they spread some rodenticide. Your question about the total gut though is certainly interesting.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 9:41 AM
What did you all do yesterday that caused the wipe of the ot? Can you tell me without getting this one wiped too?
Posted by: Heather at April 30, 2009 9:42 AM

what does this stand for? oo====) "FGVOTD" ?
also dipster and snappy if you wanna do the 40s thing i was thinking about having a get together on my roof tomorrow night. it's definitely BYO40s! if tomorrow is bad i think im going to the flea on saturday unless it rains, tho rain doesnt bother me much (does the flea still go on tho if it's rainey?)

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 30, 2009 9:45 AM
I'll try to take a picture of it so you can see what I am talking about. I mean, besides the front door and the actual house shell, nothing is left. I found it very strange myself since I have never seen anything like that. I've seen abandoned shells but nothing like that since the house was in pretty good condition beforehand and a family/families lived in it for years and in practically one day, completely gutted.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 9:45 AM
Haha Rob - Pylones is a pretty stupid ass store, but not as stupid at that FROG cafe right next to it.
Whenever I worked late (when it was open) they had this fake velvet rope thing going on yet the place was open.
Come to think of it - everything on Spring btw Broadway and Lafayette is pretty freakin lame - that cooking store, the sneaker boutique, the Moma Store, etc.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 30, 2009 9:47 AM
oooo, Maybe some kind of a freaky real life CSI thing happened there? I am going by there today to take down the exact address and google it.

Okay serious question.
We haven’t had my car washed all winter. The antenna is stuck in the upright position and until hubby can figure out how to bring it down we can’t take it through a car wash. However I’d like to clean the inside.
Does anyone know a place along 3rd or 4th Avenues (between Bay Ridge and Park Slope) that has one of those coin operated super vacuums?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 9:52 AM
DIBS, yeah - am a bean counter. SAT english scores too low to get into marketing
Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 9:54 AM
BRG, this is closer to you than park slope. Avenue C and coney Island has a gas station and it the back, there are coin vacuums that you are looking for.

"The antenna is stuck in the upright position and until hubby can figure out how to bring it down"
If the antenna is stuck in the upright position for more than 4 hours, please seek medical attention.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 9:56 AM
It sounds like the gut rehab they did on the house next door to me a few years ago. They stripped out everything, replaced all the crossbeams and roof- everything. It could be there was a lot of hidden damage, or the foundation was really bad or someone bought it and wanted a totally clean slate to work with. It was awful to see the wood detailing rippped up and in the dumpster.

oooooooooh thanks bxgirl! :) i will check that out! everyone says to go to beacon's closet but i went there once and wound up with a stupid sweater that just well looked stupid. i dont like stores like that anyway that raid the real thrift stores like goodwill and salvation army and then jackup the prices and sell with a snooty 'tude. (tho i didnt get a snooty tude from beacon's closet, but almost every other "thrift" and i use that term lightly store ive been to i have gotten that.) plus the money goes to good causes when you buy from salvation army and goodwill instead of going up some 25 year old girl's nose if you know what i mean.

Thanks Kens...but I'd rather a place in the direction of Downtown; as I'm heading down in that direction later this evening and can do it along the way.
Anyone else know of a place.....maybe a gas station with a vacuum?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 10:04 AM
DH and rob...those kind of stores were all the rage during the Japanese bubble years. We're already seeing a lot of restaurants close and these won't be far behind.
This flu thing is going to push some hotels and maybe the airlines closer to bankruptcy. The airlines seemed to get their businesses in order and then this pops up and they are cancelling a lot of flights now. It's VERY serious.

BRG - Try Hess on 4th avenue and Union Street in Park Slope - they have the vaccums
also there is a gas station (I think Hess or Mobile) on 4th avenue and like 30th street that has vaccums as well
you really should get it washed on the outside though - go to one of the car washes that is HANDS only - there are a few in BK - just need to think where...

Glad you like it Snappy, of course we can noodle around with the order if anyone has any suggestions or flashes of inspiration. We need to start drafting our business plan/model. M4L apparently is somewhat 'less than enthused' by our 'management'. Although what credentials he has to pass such judgments have yet to be seen, I suggest we ignore, and move forward!

heather- I think it was one particular poster who starting throwing out really offensive words relating to people's life choices. Not that we don't toss around a lot of bad words and insults but racial, ethnic and gender slurs cross a line. In fact I'll take bets on that being the reason.

Rob, most of the car washes in London are drive-thru. They are cheap but they don't do a very good job and I would never put a nice car through it.
I can just imagine you as a tourist over here, jumping in a taxi and asking the driver to take you to the nearest car wash!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 10:21 AM
MM can design the waitress costumes and I'll do the banners and graphics for the menus. I have about a 1000 fonts- heck, I could do every letter in a different font. I don't want to go too tasteful on this, ya know.
Posted by: bxgrl at April 30, 2009 10:21 AM
“Is the antenna electrically operated??”
Not sure if it’s operated by electric or gas? ;-)
But when you turned on the radio the antenna would go up, when you turned it off it would go down....It’s up and stuck....been stuck since winter.
We thought it froze in the winter because of ice but now that the weather is warmer we thought it would move.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 10:22 AM
CH, dont doubt if you can do but rather if it'll be "juicy" enough (profit wise) to keep doing it. I believe you & snappy way over qualified to be interested in running it unless the bar is a money press.

A day too late, but....6years, you asked about the Ocean Hill/Brownsville situation yesterday. I'm afraid I can't help you on that one. I didn't grow up in NYC, and only heard about it after moving to NY. I only know generalities, no more that what you'd read on line. My Mom taught in public school upstate, where we lived, but then only taught in Catholic schools when we returned to the city, so I never got any info from her on the subject, either. Sorry.

Canadians have always worn inappropiate beach wear. Wildwood was more like a jungle with all the tarzans running/gasping about. They also have a penchant for lots of decals-stick ons for their autos.

BRG, I don't think it will ruin the wiring or shortcircuit or anything. Just spray it in the hole (boy that sounds sooo wrong on so many different levels).
If that doesn't work, it might be that the little motor just burned out and needs to be replaced.

Snappy, I was going to go today also (I need to return something)....I can come pick you up, we can vacuum the car (wear a thong please) and head over there to Century.
Forget taking the bus...you can ride in styyyle - okay the jalopy is a 10yr old caddy, but hey you don't have to deal with coughing people on the bus!

It is the motor. Spraying it with WD40 isn't going to get the motor started. Wash the car by hand...you know, a hand job. That shouldn't be difficult.

BRG, I think there's a detailing & wash your own car wash at the corner of Smith & 9th Sts. (in the back of the lot where all the Budget trucks are parked). Called something like Hamilton Car Care; have driven past many times, have never used it. Probably has super-vacs, too. Otherwise, for vacs, think someone already recommended the Hess at 4th & Union.
6years, a friend is working on a reunion/conference of students, teachers and others who helped organize alternate schools throughout the city as a result of the OH-B teacher's strike. If interested, drop a line to hsfreepress40 at gmail.

"Okay Chicken...I'm going to try it.
So do I just squirt the lubricant in the hole where the antenna goes into?
It won't affect the electrical wiring?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 10:38 AM"
no, it won't hurt the wiring but you need to squirt it along the shaft (re-write away folks). The aeriel is a series of concentric pipes that are chrome-plated. If the chrome has come away at any point then it will rust in place - that's what you need to get rid off.
I suggested spraying WD40 first because that is the easiest thing to do although it is more likely to be either a burnt out motor or poor connection.
You can tell if the motor is gone by testing it with a 12V battery (the square one with the two buttons on top) and a couple of wires. Wrap the wires around the buttons on the battery and then touch the positive to the positive on the motor (it's attached to the aeriel under the wing) and the negative to an earthing point (anywhere with bare metal on the car). If the motor whirs then it's good.

sorry - am frustated with my house situation - I feel like we have had loads of interest and second showings, but this one buyer who we are almost about to go into contract with keeps running into issues with their bank(despite them putting down a large downpayment)

April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Half a glass of wine a day may add
five years to your life, a new study suggests. Drink beer, and you’ll live only 2 1/2 years longer.
Dutch researchers followed 1,373 men for more than four
decades, noting their eating and drinking habits. Men who had about 20 grams of alcohol daily -- equivalent to a half a glass of wine -- had 2 1/2 years added to their life expectancy at age 50, compared with men who didn’t drink at all, according to the research published today in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Men who consumed only wine had twice as much added longevity.
Light alcohol intake was linked to lower cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and overall mortality in the study. Researchers had known that moderate drinking is tied to a lower risk of heart disease, possibly because of an increase in high density lipoprotein or so-called good cholesterol as well as a reduction in platelet clumping, making it more unlikely for clots to form. It is the first study to show that one kind of alcohol is superior to others in prolonging life, the researchers said.
“In this study, 70 percent of all wine consumed was red
wine,” the researchers, led by Marinette Streppel of the
University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, said in the paper. “This suggests that the cardioprotective effect of wine could be due to a protective effect of polyphenol compounds in red wine, but other explanations cannot be ruled out.”

Another day, another marginally intelligible , certifiably piece of drek from the What. It is so obvious that being born and raised in Brooklyn has done nothing for his personality, his intelligence or his education.
Montrose, on the other hand, is a prime example of who a true Brooklynite is. That's what pisses you off, What. You're so far beneath her and it just kills you. It bugs you so much you can't even think logically, let alone like a sentient human being (and in your case I use the words "sentient human being" loosely- but at least I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt.)

No Bxgrl I tired of people re-writing history and changing history. Like for example:
Nicolaus Copernicus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolaus_Copernicus
Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was the first astronomer to formulate a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology, which displaced the Earth from the center of the universe.[1]
This is European Mind-Fuck Bullshit! The Egyptians developed astrology thousands of years before Copernicus was born! But they teach this bullshit to kids everyday! Just like the retards moving in and re-writing the history of brooklyn! I noticed that 80% of the people on Brownstoner was not born and raise in Brooklyn but have a fucking opinion on everything that happen here years ago!

Since when do you have to be born and raised in Brooklyn to have a right to an opinion? especially if you live here? More especially if you love it as much as she does. And yes- Montrose can take care of herself, very very well- but you posted it publically for everyone to see. The corrollary to that is that you want everyone to respond and your big problem is that they aren't agreeing with you. Why don't you just grow up and act your age.
Oh- an about that comment about Copernicus? You do know the difference between "astronomy" and "astrology"? You do understand that Copernicus put the sun at the center of the solar system, as opposed to the idea that the earth was at the center (or riding on turtles?). Or that Copernicus had a completely different concept of the universe, which takes away nothing from the vast contributions of the Egyptians. Maybe you should stop looking at everything in life through the lens of racism- the only one trying to rewrite the world according to an agenda is you.

WHAT, feel free to type but dont pretend to be tough guy/gal/etc. Typing speed, things to say, people to insult, you're good at that. "Being tough" is something you can type but not be. Prove me wrong and show up to the gathering and say that to my face.
Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 1:24 PM
What, a question I've pondered (and have no answer to) is how long must someone live somewhere before they can say they are from that place? In other words, if someone is born in Brooklyn and his family moves away when he's 2, is he a Brooklynite for life? What if he moves away at 10 or 20?
On the other hand, what if someone moves to Brooklyn when they are 2 or 10 or 20? Can they every consider themselves Brooklynites and, if so, after how many years of being there?
I've been in New York for over a decade but don't know if I feel like I'm a New Yorker. And I really am not sure I could say I'm a Brooklynite. Maybe I'm just an Asshat?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 1:29 PM
my opinion Biff - 7 years.
if i'm not mistaken that's how long it takes to live in the US states and become a citizen.
So if the united states is willing to welcome an outsider after 7 years - then so should NYC!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 30, 2009 1:37 PM
Biff, don't ask that guy...do you really think he has some sort of golden metric? You're great. Call yourself whatever you want -- I'm a believer.
Posted by: jessibaby at April 30, 2009 1:38 PM
I have lived in NYC for 10+ years & love it and hope to stay here (now a dual citizen). Even if I live here the rest of my life I don't think I would ever say I am from NYC.
Meanwhile I still describe myself as being from the city where I was born and grew up, even though I haven't lived there since I moved away to college and only go back 1-2 weeks per year typically.
Posted by: etson at April 30, 2009 1:38 PM
Biff....Everyone has a different definition.
Unlike etson, I grew up here and wasn't born here but came to US (Brooklyn NY) when I was 11 and consider myself a die hard Brooklynite. I don't associate myself with the country that I was born and we left there as refugees anyways so my only citizenship is US of A. I would serve in the army in this country anyday and wouldn't do it for any other country (well maybe Israel if I lived there but that's a whole different story). I also don't see myself living anywhere else in the world other than New York. If I ever end up moving, I think I'll consider myself a Brooklynite at heart forever.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 1:46 PM
DH, actually, it takes longer usually. The Green Card process took me almost 5 years (and is likely longer now) and then you have a wait period of another 5 years less 90 days from getting the Green Card until citizenship. But I must say that, as painful and prolonged as the Green Card process was, the citizenship process went incredibly smooth. I would say it's around 10 years for the whole process these days.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 1:46 PM
JB, that was funny! But What opened up the discussion about growing up in and out of New York and I actually do find him to be insightful at times. He's likely one of the few here who was raised in Brooklyn, so I would like to know his opinion. It doesn't mean I'll take it as gospel...just wondering.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 1:48 PM
etson and Kens, I guess what it comes down to is that it's up to how someone feels. Every situation is so unique I think it's impossible to measure everyone's situation in terms of years here or there. Like etson, I have a hard time saying I'm from New York or a New Yorker. Unlike Kens, I cherish the country in which I was born and raised and will always consider that my true home, even if I end up living in NYC for a longer time than I was there. When I go back and visit, to me it is really like going home. It's different than when I return to NYC after being away.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 1:51 PM
WHAT.. I presume your definition of a true Brooklynite and not a transplant is if you were here during rough times and stuck around, you're a Brooklynite.
For example, in my opinion, Montrose is here over 25 years and knows more about Brooklyn and it's history then all of the born and raised Brooklynites that I know put together. How does that not make her a Brooklynite?
I am not trying to pick a fight or anything with you, just want to know your opinion as much as Biff.

Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 1:55 PM
Biff, I think you put it in perspective. I think people mostly consider themselves whatever City/Country comes to mind first when you think of "HOME". To me, it's always been New York City. That's home.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 1:56 PM
Biff, I immigrated from ...........
hehe, that was to tease DIBS
Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 1:59 PM
I am a good hybrid example of the is he or isn't he a lifelong Brooklyner issue. Born in Brooklyn, partially raised here, moved during childhood, moved back 15 years ago so about half of my life lived in Brooklyn. In Asshat Hill for 7 years now. I know I consider myself a dyed in the wool Brooklynite.
Posted by: wasder at April 30, 2009 2:01 PM
M4L, I believe you mean, "I emigrated from"
I immigrated to the US from Canada
I emigrated from Canada to the US
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 30, 2009 2:03 PM
I consider myself a New Yorker who live in Jersey. Shoot, I was born and raised in NY and spent 12 of those years in Brooklyn. That can't be erased by spending the last 2 in Jersey City can it? Maybe after I've put in 7 years but certainly not yet.
My hubby laughs at me all the time. Whenever we watch the news and Bloomberg's on I'll say, "Our mayor blah blah..." He'll say that's NOT YOUR mayor anymore. Then I hear something about the MTA and I'll say, "They're screwing us...." and my husband will then remind me I take the PATH train not the subway.
Leaving NYC either has a very steep learning curve or I'm delusional and clinging to it by the very tips of my fingernails.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 30, 2009 2:07 PM
THL, I don't think you're delusional at all. Thinking aloud and hearing some thoughts here is convincing me that home is where the heart is and wherever you consider it to be. It's the place where you feel you represent and that represents you best.

I've spent almost my entire live in Brooklyn. Came here when I was a baby. I don't ever want to leave (except when I retire and move to Southern Spain [sigh]) Even if I move to another state, I'll always consider myself a New Yorker.

Posted by: Kensingtonian at April 30, 2009 2:13 PM
I'm just an asshat. Ok, maybe an asshat that was raised here in CH, but still an asshat nonetheless! And What isn't going to like this, but I wasn't born here. I 'emigrated' with my parents at the age of 2 from 'parts North'. Although my Pop was born here.
All this talk about who is and who ain't a NY'er is really pointless. It's really all about heart.
Do you love it here? Do you really want it to be good and strong, and to be a part of the character, heart and soul of the place? Then no matter if you have been here for 45 years or 5 years. You are a NY'er. Just like this country, NY was built on immigrants. And the melding of cultures and ideas.
What, I know you have the heart and soul, of this place we know and love, in you. And I love tripping down memory lane with you, you know I do.

Hi Biff How are you doing? Long time, no talk. Here we go!
"For example, in my opinion, Montrose is here over 25 years and knows more about Brooklyn and it's history then all of the born and raised Brooklynites that I know put together."
I disagree with you Biff. As per the WABC, Downtown Brooklyn and the WBLS Frankie Crocker posts there are holes in Morris history about Brooklyn. My assessment of those holes was very harsh and I'm sorry for that but what I wrote but cannot stand is the total re-writing of history. Biff Brooklyn and the City of New York has gone thru a dramatic transformation over the last few years! People like myself hate to see change happen so fast and wished for the "good ole days" of Brooklyn but that will never happen again. The New York I know about got crushed by the Mutant Asset Bubble! Only Cobblehiller and Benson are the only people on Brownstoner that understands where I'm coming from (Yes Benson). The disgusting thing is if Morris grew up here and was drawing from those experiences then, I would not have a problem with it (Swear to GOD) but when I read such nonsense (Because I was born and raise here and know the history) it turn my stomach to see it! That's like my moving to Palo Alto, CA and starting a Blog and telling everyone there that it happen this way. I call bullshit on things that I know are false, did not happen and had no part of Brooklyn!
"On the other hand, what if someone moves to Brooklyn when they are 2 or 10 or 20? Can they every consider themselves Brooklynites and, if so, after how many years of being there?"
Hell yes Biff!! But don't try to re-write things to fit you agenda, that's pure bullshit!!!!
Also I'm on a Egyptian rant because no one want to acknowledge the source! Everything we have in place came from them, EVERYFUCKING THING!
"I really am not sure I could say I'm a Brooklynite. Maybe I'm just an Asshat?"
Biff you are not a Asshat! A Asshat is someone that tries to Hijack a neighborhood and force people out (High rents, price and smugness). You live in Brooklyn Heights and you put your money where you month is. Plus I never heard you complain about the conditions of Brooklyn (Even when we was at war) NEVER! People come the New York everyday and make it and they blend in. They are real New Yorkers in my book, not some neighborhood hi-jacking Asshat!

Hey What,
Don't go around saying everything came from the Egyptians. It will lead people to discredit any contributions we do attribute to them. The Egyptians did give us a hell of a lot and a hell of a lot mor than they will ever get credit for.
But when you go around with blanket statements, it will make you the boy who cried egypt and only aids the Eurocentrism we're already stuck with.
The CHinese and Arabs are just starting to get credit (relatively speaking over the course of recorded history) for their achievements. Let's not shoot Osiris in the foot now

Cobble, I think your post said it all.
As for me, I guess I have no right to say anything about Brooklyn, according to what. I'm a relative newcomer in that I've only been here 24 years (slighly more than half a lifetime). I've lived in 7 residences in Brooklyn all within a 30-block radius, so I really haven't gotten around. I've owned, co-opped and rented, but never owned multiple properties. I've only researched the title, occupancy and neighborhood history of one house. There are still a few neighborhoods I haven't spent any time in (hello Bushwick! your time will come). I am still learning some of the Brooklyn basics, like how to reach Buzzy to open Buzz-a-rama when he didn't feel like opening, or where the best spot is in Red Hook to do yoga within view of the Statute of Liberty, or how great the hat guy on Dekalb is, or how late lap swim goes at the red hook pool on weeknights, or who has the best Turkish food near Ave. P, or when to go to Shannon florist/nursery to avoid the crowds, or how to get free advice about dealing with DOB from an architect at 6:30 am, or when you can get a free kayak outing in Canarsie, and I still haven't visited the surviving community gardens in Brownsville. So, by what's terms, I guess I have no right to comment on Brooklyn because I haven't lived here as long as he has, didn't live the Ocean Hill Brownsville fight first hand, and don't use every opportunity to advance an Afro-centric view of history. I got news for you what, if you weren't living in Brooklyn long enough ago to have seen the Dodgers at Ebbets Field, there are a bunch of old guys who won't count you, either (and some of those guys play some mean bocce).
Cobble's right. You've had some good days lately, but you seem to be tilting at windmills today.

No offense, but wasn't the OT shut down yesterday? Didn't see what happened, but saw the remnants when I got back to town last night.
If Mr. B wasn't afraid of losing the 300 comments a day from you guys, he'd probably take it away. But hey...it's a free country...I don't really care, but let's not suggest that the OT is the standard for good conversation.
I've glanced in maybe 3 or 4 times total and simply thought it was high school chatroom type stuff. Pretty lame to say the least. What is especially offensive is the people who are out of work and posting 100 comments per 30 minutes. But again...to each his/her own. I'd just feel like a loser doing that all day when I'm supposed to be pounding the pavement.
Not really on par with what is supposed to be an excellent and high quality blog about real estate.
Mr. B lets you guys keep it so you don't all run away crying. Otherwise, why would he WANT to keep it so you all can talk about nonsense all day? Think about it.
When newcomers come to this blog and see the OT, I'm sure lots are kinda grossed out by a bunch of "adults" talking about absolute nonsense all day.
There are other outlets for such things, you realize...

troy- I should have clarified a little better. What's comment was to claim the Egyptians invented everything but used the fact that Copernicus actually came up with "a fully predictive mathematical model of a heliocentric system" as an example.
The Egyptians may have believed in heliocentrism at varying times, but never came up with such a model and Copernicus was an astronomer- not an astrologer which the What seems not to know are different fields of study (yes interrelated- but very different). So his entire argument is a red herring, in the meantime he takes MM to takes for supposedly being ignorant of Brooklyn.

troy- I get passionate about it as well and when the What pisses me off I write too fast and in this case dumbed it down to his level. Since he can't tell the difference between astronomy and astrology I didn't see the need to get too detailed. But my degree is in anthropology, and my field of interest was ancient, not modern, so I understand where you're coming from.

Kens,
Buzz-a-rama -- slot car racing. Church & Dahill. Last one left in Brooklyn, AFAIK. Place hasn't changed in 40 years.
DIBS,
I like Philly, too. My wife's from the area and I worked there one summer. We are in Center City a lot. Older suburbs are filled with great stone houses and wooded hills. City has lots of great rowhouses, a bit of Brooklyn and Beacon Hill, but cheaper. Great music history -- jazz, soul, folk, etc. Great cultural amenities. Easy to get around. I have to sign off the thread, but are you in the suburbs or the City?

For anyone determined to prove themselves as a true Brooklynite, I recommend the following topics from my childhood: please debate the relative costs and merits of a Spaldeen v. a Pensy Pinky, and whether bottlecaps should or should not be filled when playing Skelly. (I am, BTW, a native Brooklynite, older than DIBS but probably not the What, and can speak about the OH-B strike from firsthand experience.)
As to heliocentrism, Egyptians, turtles, and definitive knowledge, I recommend the following (copied from Wikipedia, to save typing): The most widely known version [of "Turtles all the way down"] appears in Stephen Hawking's 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which starts: “A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

I really don't know why the What has his panties in a twist over what I write. He is especially upset over 2 topics that I voiced my memories of: downtown Brooklyn in the 80's, when I first moved to Bklyn, and my mother's friendship with Frankie Crocker's mother. I don't know why both of those innocuous comments bother him so much, but apparently they do.
Regarding downtown, I simply recounted the stores and conditions as I remember them. Several other people corroborated the same memories, but I pissed him off because he feels I horned in on his memories and his thread, although posting anything on a public blog is fair game for joining in on. If not, write the person you are talking to a private email.
Regarding FC, I said at the time that he was my mother's friend's son. The friend did not live in New York, or even on the east coast. I met Mr. Crocker twice for about 20 minutes each time. I did not know him, and was not aware that he died. My mother and her friend died years ago, and no further social connection was made. For some reason the What also thinks I co-opted his memories of Frankie Crocker. I don't know how he came to that conclusion, and frankly, I don't care. I only write this to explain to anyone who may even give a flying fahootie as to why the What thinks I make up history.
Perhaps instead of insisting that all history comes from the Egyptians, he should realize that others have a point of view, as well, and that their contributions to both history, and one's more recent memories of Brooklyn and New York culture, have worth, too.
Basta, finito.

I was waiting for that. Did you know the Buddha is a Black man? Did you know Africans had major influence on India and China.
http://clyde.winters.tripod.com/junezine/id1.html
IN NORTHERN CHINA the Blacks/Africoids founded many Civilizations. The three major empires of China were the Xia, Dynasty (1900-1700 BC), Shang/Yin Dynasty (1700-1050 BC) and the Zhou Dynasty. The Zhou Dynasty was the first dynasty founded by the Mongoloid people in China.

"whether bottlecaps should or should not be filled when playing Skelly."
In my neighborhood, it was optional, subject to majority rule of the players. But almost all of us did it, so it was pretty much a given that we'd vote for "filled." We'd collect cps of various sizes and use them in specific situations. One of the guys got a Vaseline jar top and spent like a week filling it with wax. It must have weighed a pound or two. He'd whip it out whenever he didn't want his cap to get bumped.
"Spaldeen v. a Pensy Pinky"
We'd nly use Spaldeens. Never hears of a Pensy Pinksy. We didn't have them in ENY, I guess.

Not sure I ate at this one, as I love turkish and would remember.

In "Dreams From My Father," Barack Obama wrote that he had several family members who had lived their entire lives in Nairobi and considered it to be their home. But it wasn't really their true home, since the Obama family came from the a village on the shores of Lake Victoria. They called that village "home squared," which perfectly captures my feelings about Brooklyn (my "home" of seven years - ten years in NYC), and San Diego (first 18 years of my life - definitely "home squared"). I would imagine there are some others here who feel the same way.

ENY, we filled our caps with melted solder. Pensy Pinkys cost a nickel more than Spaldeens. We couldn't afford them and didn't think they bounced as well, but they were lorded over us by the rich kids down the block. The trick with Spaldeens was to rub the seams against the pavement until they'd been smoothed enough to match the rest of the ball.
Posted by: vinca at April 30, 2009 4:14 PM
Only Spaldeens- but I'm not a true Brooklynite to some (the 20+ years here don't count, I guess.) Fine with me- I'm damn proud of the Bronx, love Brooklyn and give a rats ass whether or not anyone defines me as a true Brooklynite or not.

Also, the latest silliness from the education bureaucRATS: we were told by the quality reviewer in our school that we should not write comments on student work. What, I will even grant you that some, or even all, of that information is true. So what, really? It makes sense that the early peoples of the world, who undisputedly came from the African continent, spread across the world to become the various peoples of the earth. Any high school student who paid attentions during genetics week can affirm that over the centuries, those people gradually changed into the racial groups we have today, due to the environments they lived in, and the ebb and flow of genetic traits being accepted and rejected into the gene pool, by environments, conditions and other factors .
And we know now that many early peoples travelled and traded much farther afield than we previously gave credit for. Therefore, you find evidence of black people in parts of Mexico and South America well before the Spanish brought slaves to the area. You find various other peoples in places not thought visited, until evidence was found to the contrary. Everyone knows the Native American peoples are the decendants of Asian peoples who migrated across the Russian steppes over to North America.
I understand the need for pride in proving that our Negroid African ancestors were not just savages without brains or a history, a slave race for centuries of our betters. I understand the need for websites and books, to prove that everyone from Ramses to Jesus to Beethoven was black. I celebrate the books that show that many of the great inventions of our times were invented by black people who got no credit, no fame or fortune, and were often ripped off by people who are now accredited for their hard work. It is frustrating, maddening and unfair to have nothing but the works of conquering Europeans made to be the entirety of history. I HEAR YOU!
But I see no sense in being like those guys in Times Square with the absurd robes on, insisting that the 12 Tribes of Israel are 12 island nations in the Caribbean. Nonsensical history is worse than inaccurate history. Putting up a website with a couple of statues to prove that the early Chinese were black no more proves that than some neo-Nazi website with a couple of pictures of monkeys and black people is true. Our racial honor is neither advanced nor diminished by admitting or celebrating the accomplishments of others. The truths taught by Jesus, for example, are great truths whether he was Semitic, North African, Nubian or Teutonic. Only the latter is out of the question.
I tell you sincerely that what we do NOW, is what is important. How we deal with people, with the world. That is why Obama fascinates the world. Why what we, as Brooklynites of all races and colors need to unite to protect what we love, not worry so much about the color of the hand reached out in friendship.

Re-write:

(ok, admittedly that re-write works best in England)

DH - yah, it was you that sent 11217 over the edge
he will be back - he enjoys the blog too much and I like him! - he stuck up for me in some inane silliness awhile back about PLG houses or nabes or something. the comment though about the umemployed was below the belt and wrong though!
Rob - youre too much! - hahahah
CH - I think that dish is called something else in Greece - it's escaping me now

Yesterday I found one of the funniest websites:
http://devilsdaughterinlaw.blogspot.com/
She re- tells nightmarish stores about her Mother in law. The best is "Some guy touch your boob get over it"
You'll literally laugh out loud.
Me, I'm lucky as all get out. My MIL is incredible. She's hysterical, crazy and something straight from a movie. I adore her nd she adores me. So long as her son does. Then I think I'll be stabbed repeatedly and buried. but until then...

boo - bring it m4L!!
his hatred for williamsburg and everyone in it is mind boggling!
i always thought 11217 and I were on "friendly" terms even though we've had some spirited debates. he defintely had his panties in a bunch today about something.

Okay, I'm back after a couple of hours meeting with a builder.
Looking at a new kitchen, new bathroom, new glass roof on the conservatory (all low-to-mid range stuff but with nice finishes) and knocking out a load-bearing wall.
Who wants to take a guess on what the estimate is going to come out at?

Help, I can't keep up!
Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 5:21 PM
LS, I don't mind when 11217 gets feisty, it's generally pretty entertaining, but I'm not sure it's in a way that he intends/would like. That is to say it's amusing but not in a flattering way for him. He denigrates himself with his own behavior. That's fine that he likes the 'sport' of argument, but then he needs to be "sporting". It's when he makes it personal that it gets my back up. No reason to go where he goes at times.
There are a lot of interesting, smart, funny and cool people on this site. Enjoy it, enjoy intellectual argument. Enjoy the banter. I actually used to trade a few fun comments with him a long time ago. But he turned on me, rather viciously, one day, fortunately for me a few of the usual suspects stepped in and stuck up for me and thrashed him a bit. I really stepped 'in it' that time. I learned to avoid him [and others], and have done so pretty well until today. I knew he'd jump all over me, but I did it anyway, I said what I think and feel. None of us are perfect, and certainly not me. He baited me. I'm no sucker. I can and will stand up for myself.

Though I taunted 11217 a few comments ago, I must say I enjoy his presence, as he spices things up a bit. It would be mighty boring around here if we were all in agreement all the time.
Nevertheless, for some real disagreement, I still prefer sebb!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 30, 2009 5:32 PM
DH, switching topic a little. if you just want to live in a solid & spacious bldg for cheap, keep an eye out for those hi-rise coops in clinton hill (ie along willoughby ave, hall st, lafayette ave). am starting to see occasionally 1 bdrms units (700-800 sq ft) going for 250k-270k. maint is ~500-600/month. It aint RE eye candy but it's cheap & spacious. You'll see them when you browse craigslist or streeteasy

"Lincoln we should definitely have a drink and I'll show you my yard. :)"

Posted by: more4less at April 30, 2009 5:38 PM
thanks m4l - are those the same buildlings as the clinton hill co-ops?
if so - yeah the outside isn't much to look at but the layout look great and looks like they get alot of sun.

Posted by: the chicken at April 30, 2009 5:40 PM
Chicken, it can't be more than 120K...if it is, you're getting ripped off.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 5:42 PM
i know there's some stuff out there - i'm just hesitant as this isn't really monopoly money for me - made through selling another property - if i buy and the market drops even 10% it'll sting a bit!
but then again, i know i won't be moving anytime soon, so it really shouldn't matter as long term things will be okay. it's just hard!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 30, 2009 5:42 PM
Good views from a lot of the CH co-ops as well.
Posted by: etson at April 30, 2009 5:42 PM
DH, those are not the clinton hill coops - worst looking but equally solid. the ones I'm talking about are 2 set of coops - 1 closer to myrtle ave and willoughby and the other is dekalb & lafayette ave. Both are off Hall St / St James Pl. Again, no eye candy but good bang for the buck.
No rush, prices aint going anywhere but down. Keep eye on it and if you see some price at fire sale, then think about it

DH, just focus on what I said in other thread - keep the job (1st priority), save up, maintain good credit score
while you wait out the mkt, watch for anamolies - ie I've seen twice during this past yr a nice solid 1 bedrm unit at the clinton hill coops listed & sold ~250k. believe both times were distress sellers

okay in that case...I'll play along:
"new kitchen, new bathroom, new glass roof on the conservatory and a load-bearing wall."
Let's see...my guess low-mid end reno 50K, maybe a bit lower.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 5:48 PM
Thanks m4L - i'm defnitely no real estate snob and will defnitely keep an eye on those. thanks for the pointers!
i'm outta here - have a pleasant evening all!

Yeah, $100 to $120K and then there will be astonishing add-ons as the builder discovers plumbing you already knew was there!

wait, hold on....when you said "new glass roof on the conservatory"
Is there something there now and you're replacing it or are you adding a root top addition, breaking thru, with structural work and adding staircase. If that's the case then I need to raise my estimate.

No stairs - it's just an outhouse/utility room that I'm going to incorporate into the rest of the house so needs insulation and a nice glass roof to replace the current make-shift one there at the mo and let in more light.

"Lower than 50K?????? Who's building this? Chickens?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 30, 2009 6:00 PM"
Well I'm hoping for it to come in sub-$30k (using an exchange rate of 1.5) as we were talking about $40-45k including a second bathroom.
And that is for some proper guys doing it - it would be closer to $22k if I used a cowboy contractor that I know of.
I think it's very interesting to compare the contracting rates between London and NY for what are otherwise fairly comparable-cost cities. I may have to fly these boys over to do the work when I eventually get a house in Brooklyn...
Posted by: the chicken at April 30, 2009 6:12 PM
OK I know everybody's gone to sleep but did you see *this*? Cops stopping people in East New York just because it's a high crime area -- and only 10 percent actually get arrested. Now....I'm in favor of stopping crime, but that sounds madly unfair to me.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/01/nyregion/01frisk.html?ref=nyregion
Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 10:15 PM
Here's a cowboy story for you: My landlady paid $2,000 (labor) for her contractor to install a new kitchen, refinish the floors, and paint my apartment.
The apartment is probably 800 square feet, and the kitchen is a galley side kitchen but the work involved installing about nine linear feet of cabinets, granite tile counter and backsplash with contrast tile, and a tile floor. Painting included contrast trim.
Talk about a deal. Half the grout fell out a week later, and six months later the floors have no more polyurethane on them.
Kitchen still looks pretty good though.
Isn't that a crazy price? Poor contractor, he must be more than half way to the poor house by now.
Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 10:23 PM
And she'll probably keep our $2,000 security deposit when we move -- on account of the missing polyurethane, which is entirely her fault -- and make back all the money.
Posted by: mopar at April 30, 2009 10:24 PM
mopar, that sounds about right by London standards if you're not paying a middleman although depends how much prep work involved for the painting.
remove old kitchen - 1/2 day
install new kitchen - 1 day (add 1/2 day if carcasses need building up)
tiling and prep - 1 day
painting prep, undercoat and topcoat - 4 days
Total = 1 week
The grouting problem is because he used cheap grout and not enough of it - which is stupid because even the good stuff is fairly cheap and no more difficult to use the right amount.
He's chosen the wrong PU sealer or applied it incorrectly - again would not have cost much more to do it right.
Sounds like he was a general labourer that needed a bit of direction. Day rate of $250 x 7 = $1,750. Add in another day of contingency and you are there. Not good if you are paying taxes on it but not bad for cash in hand.
Posted by: the chicken at May 1, 2009 3:40 AM
Very interesting, chicken, about the costs and the grout.
Don't forget the floors. Maybe a day to sand and put down the first coat, then two more days to put down more coats and dry? He was late and in a rush so he put down only one coat as far as I know, then covered the whole thing with paper before it was dry so we could move in the next day.
I've been quoted $2,000 just to do polyurethane, I've never heard of anyone installing a whole kitchen for less than $2,000 (but now that I think of it, maybe that included all the materials), and I've certainly met a lot of painters who would like to think they should get $2,000 to paint an 800-sf apt.
