For your viewing pleasure, here is today's FGVOTD.

It's a little unorthodox, but perhaps the most "feel good" video I've posted to date.

It's hard to resist bouncing up and down and moving your head from side to side.

Surest sign of a benevolent society: school crossing guards

Least sure sign: the sixth car in line honking one millisecond after the light changes to green

I finally saw the Susan Boyle video this weekend. Simply wonderful!! Better than any "Rocky" type scene in the movies.

Posted by: benson at April 20, 2009 9:29 AM

That was great Biff!

And it cheered me up after the heart attack of that fake stress test story. Sheesh!

i had an epiphone (sp?) on the train this morning reading "where does the money go?" im moving to another state (maybe idaho or montana or utah) and becoming a farmer.

this city does not make any sense anymore and it's not like i even like to do the things it's well known to offer.

i want to sit outside with my dog duke on my porch drinking pink lemonade and watch the sun set and not have to see any people.

does this sound like crazy talk? i feel like it totally is crazy talk but at the same time it's something that i would absolutely LOVE to do. get outside my comfort zone like that crazy tranny psychic on the street said to do that time..

Montrose, if you are reading this morning, there is a post in the forum on repainting an exterior. I thought you might have some thoughts on some areas where there are some good examples of similar facades nicely painted, or perhaps some historical insight.

"epiphany"

Downer. So does anyone feel as depressed as I do over the torture memos? Anyone think we as a society have regressed to quasi-totalitarian standards by our silent acquiescence of torture?

Posted by: cmu at April 20, 2009 9:41 AM

rob, you shouldn't do drugs before work.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 9:41 AM

rob: punking us or not?

and columbine. I looked up crime scene photos and saw the two killers' bodies in the library. yikes!

Posted by: infinitejester at April 20, 2009 9:42 AM

If the CIA "of old" had been allowed to do its job there never would have been an Iraq war and most likely the 9-11 attack. They would have assasinated Saddam & bin Laden years ago.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 9:43 AM

im not punking anyone. i just feel very down about the state of our economy lately and about life in general.

when i was 13 14 and 15 i used to go to cape cod where my uncle lived (he ran a hot dog stand on some highway up there. seriously) it was call Big Al's. it was fun. then when they realized i was gay they never invited me back up there anymore lol.

i went to washington DC once. that was boring.

and yes, the greatest city on earth? biotch please. maybe if you have a huge trust fund and youre 20. otherwise it blows chunks.

sometimes i have these weird dreams about living in florida or california but they are very disorienting and i seem confused like why im there and the landscape feels strange.

i honestly think i want to be one of those people who goes to the midwest since everyone from the midwest seems to come to nyc. reverse migration.

i cant tell if it's cuz im old, jaded, or what, but i just dont connect with anyone here these days and everyone i know either has a family now, addicted to drugs, or just plain stupid. it's frustrating. i have no interest in finding a new boyfriend, i have no interest in a new career here, etc. so really i dont know why im here paying out of my butt to live in f'ing brooklyn of all places. and seriously everyone that lives in park slope are a bunch of out of state newby transplant snobs who think their kids poop smell like roses. why am i here!? why am i putting myself thru this?

i think people in another state would be nice.

Good thinking Rob. I'm sure they love gay, tattooed hipsters in Idaho, Montana and Utah. You should get a very warm reception.

Oh, and to get to the forum, you have to do what Bugs Bunny says and hang a left at Albequerque :)

Rob, I agree with you that NYC is sucking big time as of late. But, before you go dragging all your stuff to the middle of nowhere, try a mini vacation first to see if that pumps you back up.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 10:06 AM

dave it was in.. ugh im blanking on the name of the part of cape cod... i dont know if it was called orleans tho.

biff, whatever. i think i'd be a breath of fresh air in montana or utah. and if they dont like me fine. that's not even the point. the point is that i can live somewhere alone where i dont really HAVE to see anyone. it's not like people in nyc are all that open and welcoming to people either. i feel like gay people in nyc have such issues and are so beyond shallow. (and skanky). i just want to live the rest of my life in peace.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 10:07 AM

rob--certainly you living in PS is a bit of a mismatch. Before you write the whole place off maybe you should try a slightly more Rob-appropriate hood.

Posted by: wasder at April 20, 2009 10:10 AM

Most of those places are pretty libertarian - not filled with haters. Just, leave me alone, I'll leave you alone.

Posted by: infinitejester at April 20, 2009 10:11 AM

i havent been on a vacation in many years. it's kind of lame but i get three weeks of vacation days at work and most of the time i dont even use it all up, but instead just take random sick days and ask if i can take it from my vacation time. i wouldnt even know where to go and honestly vacations are so expensive to begin with.

if im living paycheck to paycheck and have no on to support and no credit card debt and im not even paying back my student loans, how the heck can this go on much longer you know what i mean?

im sorry but at this point in my life the thought of having to move to the bronx or east new york versus some random state, i think i might pick the random state.

quality of life in nyc is very VERY bad for a lot of people who don't make a lot of money.

Okay - an important question for 'stoners.

Should I take part in a charity boxing match on Wednesday? Bear in mind that I'm tragically out of shape having not done any meaningful exercise since February as well as just getting over the flu...

Posted by: the chicken at April 20, 2009 10:14 AM

chicken...send us the "before" and "after" pics. I haven't seen a good cock fight since 1990 in the Philippines. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 10:18 AM

Rob, I understand completely. Right now I'm broke as &*!@ and NYC is proving to be pure hell for me as well. As far as a vaca, do you know anyone you could go visit in one of those states for a few days first? You could do this on the cheap by taking a Greyhound bus out there, staying with a friend, etc.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 10:19 AM

Um, chicken, I'd hate to see you get your ass plucked! Don't do it!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 10:20 AM

rob- you might try actually visiting the Bronx before you condemn it.

Good luck with that, chicken. Let us know the name of the hospital you'll be visiting after the match:-). Actually though, if you are just getting over the flu it's not a good idea. Your system won't be at its best. Most likely you'll be feeling sluggish and not at full strength.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 10:21 AM

wasder, what would be a "rob appropriate hood?"

places ive lived so far in nyc

lower east side. was sooooo nice cuz i lived by myself for 4 1/2 years and then i got thrown out cuz it was an illegal sublet. the last year there tho was terrible cuz every friday/sat night was like mardi gras on ludlow street. tho still kind fun to throw water balloons off the roof.

then chelsea. blah. my boyfriend at the time took me and duke in cuz we would have been homeless. so i lived with him for another year and a half and we moved to morningside heights. then he dumped me and i moved into harlem proper and quality of life dipped so hardcore low and my teeth get knocked out, drugs everywhere in the apartment, my dog almost poisoned, but it was cheap. but i had enough and said ill look once more for somewhere to live and now live where i live now in park slope and i love my roommate and the apartment and the neighborhood but it just doesnt make sense.

i need to win the lottery or get on big brother 15 this summer and win

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 10:22 AM

Hey Rob - I hear you as far as vacations are concerned. If you're living paycheck to paycheck it's hard to justify dropping $1,000+ on something that's not exactly tangible.
It does definitely help one's mental health getting the heck out of the city once and a while - especially when it's nice out. I think we can all agree the city can be quite draining. Sometimes I find renting a car and just driving out to the middle of nowhere can be quite therapeutic, relaxing, and makes me appreciate the city more when I return rather then being so jaded!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 10:30 AM

"wasder, what would be a "rob appropriate hood?"

Rob - used to live on the LES as well and I share your sentiment that it was like Mardis Gras 24/7

I'm not sure why everyone is so damn quick to write off Queens. If I was ever to the point that I couldn't afford a neighborhood I liked in Brooklyn anymore, I would move to Jackson Heights in a heartbeat. Great transport to Manhattan, reasonable rent (1,000-1,200 would get you a palacial one bedroom apt) and fantastic ethnic cuisine. Sunnyside and the Eastern sections of Astoria are also quite neighborhoody and nice.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 10:34 AM

"everyone that lives in park slope are a bunch of out of state newby transplant snobs..."

...said the harshly judgmental guy from New Jersey who moved to the neighborhood a few months ago.

Why so down today, rob? Something happen over the weekend? Or is this an ongoing thing, because you are sounding more than just a case of the blues.

thanks for all your resounding votes of confidence!

bxgirl, Royal London Hospital will be pretty close by if I do go ahead.

Rob, don't spend what you don't have. Plenty of ways to have a nice vacation on next to no money.

i don't know how to drive. (i know! shut up). it just never was something i needed to learn to do. plus i had nightmares as a kid being in the backseat of a car (a grey cadillac) that had no driver but it was running fast around the streets and i was terrified. hahaha. when i was like 20 it felt weird to not have a license but now that im in my 30s it just feels like ah whatever. that's why it might make it hard for me to move to a place other than nyc or another big city.

i keep reading articles about people buying houses in cleveland and detroit for 2000 bux. i would love to get a bunch of people together and do something like that but would it be like living ina sci fi movie or something?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 10:38 AM

Rob,
Do you drive? You would need a car if you move to the middle of nowhere. You could probably make do without one in a small city. Perhaps a college town in a smaller state would work (but if you do move, please keep posting on Brownstoner!)

Posted by: etson at April 20, 2009 10:38 AM

dipster my best friend kristy lives in sunnyside. it blows chunks. and the commute from the 7 is terrible to anywhere. no one visits her and she barely leaves her apt.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 10:40 AM

wasder, what would be a "rob appropriate hood?"

A rob appropriate hood would be one with at least three of the following: cheap and delicious food that Rob likes (probably hard to obtain in the slope, cheap and plentiful alcohol, preferably served in a gay-friendly environment, lack of pretentious parents with snooty kids, cheap enough rent to so that Rob can live by himself, reasonable subway access so that rob can remain employed.

As you yourself said, you are not really enjoying the slope and you could certainly find cheaper rent. My bets would be on: Greenpoint, Astoria, Jackson Heights, there must be others...neighborhoods with reasonably chilled out, diverse people and enough "amenities" to make you feel like you are not living in the boonies.

Posted by: wasder at April 20, 2009 10:42 AM

Hell, I don't drive either. It was never a necessity in the places I've lived.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 10:43 AM

Beware too rob, it's going to be sunshiney warm later this week. Springtime makes people feel extra bummed because suddenly they perceive everyone out having fun except them.

Rob, your life could make for a very interesting show, maybe even a sitcom.

I'm 100% serious.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 10:49 AM

In a good mood? This should test that theory.

How come anti-rape activists never protest man-on-man rape in prison? Damn hypocrites.

Posted by: infinitejester at April 20, 2009 10:49 AM

"dipster my best friend kristy lives in sunnyside. it blows chunks. and the commute from the 7 is terrible to anywhere. no one visits her and she barely leaves her apt."

I have friends there too, and don't mind it, but to each his own. Nothing bothers me more then so called "friends" who won't visit you because you move to a less convenient neighborhood.

But yeah - Jackson Heights still rules. I also agree with Wadser that you'd probably have a better quality of life in Greenpoint, but we know how you feel about people with skinny jeans and beards ;)

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 10:51 AM

Biff--I think you are right about rob. Do you want to be a reality TV star rob?

Posted by: wasder at April 20, 2009 10:51 AM

"How come anti-rape activists never protest man-on-man rape in prison? Damn hypocrites."

I saw an insane episode of Law and Order: SVU last week where a woman was raping male celebrities by drugging them with GHB and causing them to ejaculate by stimulating their prostate with an electric cattle prod, then sold their semen to a doctor who was selling it to make genetically superior babies!!

WTF!!!!!?????

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 10:54 AM

Rob, come on down to Greenwood Heights. We are right behind PS so we share the same amenities, but it's much quieter here. Not to mention cheaper rents :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 10:54 AM

yes i do wasder. i want to be on big brother 15 sooooo badly this summer but im afraid to try out. i wouldnt do survivor cuz im out of shape, tho that doesnt seem to stop many people. one of those vh1 shows Love of *insert name here* sounds good too ahahha

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 10:55 AM

I thought Rob had a dream of being on Big Brother.

Here is the basis of the show:

Gay, thick-skinned, goofy yet entirely lovable, pseudo-hipster (who dislikes most other gays and hipsters), with a self-described dysfunctional family moves to a neighborhood he feels is completely inappropriate for him based on his financial condition and personality.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 10:56 AM

rob- I know several people whose lives are a dramagedy. Sometimes it's better to just tell them yo have to go, hang up the phone and go out to enjoy the day. When they say misery loves company, they ain't kidding and they'll suck you into it if you don't say stop.

Not that you shouldn't help, or be supportive- but find where the line between being a good guy and being sucked into their vortex exists. You have to take care of yourself first.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 10:58 AM

dirty hipster, after that, my show concept sounds extremely dull!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 10:59 AM

No doubt Biff!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 11:00 AM

DH, is it me or has Law & Order gotten more gruesome lately?

I watch L & O to calm down and relax, not to get freaked out!

Rob, We're considering about moving, too. It's interesting - there seem to be quite a few places at lower rents right now on craigslist. You might try just taking a look and thinking about it. The neighborhoods that wasder mentioned sound like they might be worth a day trip for you to go and take a look around.

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 20, 2009 11:04 AM

"Not that you shouldn't help, or be supportive- but find where the line between being a good guy and being sucked into their vortex exists. You have to take care of yourself first."

Excellent advice bxgrl.

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 20, 2009 11:07 AM

biff- perhaps you can integrate some elements of the SVU story into your synopsis- you know, to spice it up a bit :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 11:07 AM

Haha totally cobblehiller - Sometimes I finish an episode of L&O and I feel dirty, like I just watched a snuff film or something.

Anywho - pretty nice Saturday huh? The thing I find most comical about my neighborhood when it's nice out - skateboards. 30 something quasi-adult hipsters riding around on what is technically a child's toy.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 11:08 AM

with backpacks as well.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 11:09 AM

i dont want to move cuz i honestly adore my roommate and his boyfriend and it is the absolutely perfect situation for my dog and myself. i dont know how easy it would be for me to find another roommate situation that would be good for my dog (a crazy pitbull) and myself. i just cant be asked to go into a weirdo roommmate situation right now.. yeah maybe i could find an apt to myself for cheaper. i guess that is an option. but for my own apt and to pay a little less than what i pay now in a share id have to be living in the ghetto and im not going back to the ghetto. i dont care what ghetto it is. it all sucks even tho it's super cheap. but i realize that i definitely need to start saving money and will have to make sacrifices. ugh it's all so ming boggling! i just want to hide in my room and watch scooby doo and tell the world to F off sometimes. it did not hit me until literally a year ago just how hard it is being an adult. things were fine tho until now when all you hear is bad news and people complaining left and right about the economy. it's serious information overload. it SUCKS

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 11:11 AM

bxgrl, great idea! After going through what dirty hipster described, falling down a hill will seem like a walk in the park (slope) to Rob.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 11:11 AM

Rob, how much is your half of the rent right now?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 11:13 AM

"Rob, how much is your half of the rent right now?"

Oh, my sitcom will get infinitely better if Snappy (PBL) and Rob move in together!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 11:16 AM

LOL! Can you imagine that! It would be a total Odd Couple scene...black lesbian with cat, white gay man with dog, both broke, dateless, and leaning toward total curmudgeon status!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 11:18 AM

"LOL! Can you imagine that! It would be a total Odd Couple scene...black lesbian with cat, white gay man with dog, both broke, dateless, and leaning toward total curmudgeon status!"

HAHAHA!! I'd totally watch it. Hopefully no producers are watching this. We'll probably see this on NBC in 6 months.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 11:20 AM

Please go to the "Safe Walk" thread and explain to me what "gender queer" is. Is that "code?"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 11:20 AM

dirty hipster, we need a good comedy writer. Someone who is hip and in touch and can appeal to a very wide audience and knows how to write well. Someone who is just naturally a very funny person. It's a shame there is nobody like that here!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 11:23 AM

my 1/2 of the rent is 1200. if i had my own apartment id probably only be able to pay about that much but then id have to pay all the bills myself so it would be more expensive. i was toying with the ideas of moving to the vandemeer houses (former projects) that are called something else now where the rent is like 950 for a studio and electricity is free and it's rent stabalized. the thing is that i would move to somewhere like that in a heart beat if i didnt have my dog. the problem with moving to a place like is that i have a pitbull and moving into the ghetto being a lame snowflake like myself it makes people think that i only have a pitbull cuz im afraid of everyone, which is not the case, i adopted my dog a long time ago and that was the last thing in my mind. i wanted a dog and he was cute so i took him in.

he's probably around 9 years old now.. i love him so much but at the time i think it was hasty of me to take him in. because it limits my options these days. that's terrible to say i know.

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 11:24 AM

So who what actors would play Snappy and Rob?

Since I have never seen either, based on your descriptions (black lesbian, gay male pseudo hipster) I would recommend:

Snappy - Wanda Sykes
Rob - James Van Der Beek

Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 20, 2009 11:27 AM

Rob, in my neck of the woods 1200 a month will get you pretty far. My true 1 br is $1050 a month (excluding utilities). I'm pretty sure you could find a studio or smaller one bedroom with a low rent around here that would leave you cushion to pay utilities on your own and not go over 1200.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 11:29 AM

Oh, gosh no! I hate Wanda Sykes!!! Anyone but her please!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 20, 2009 11:30 AM

DH, I can't believe you haven't seen any of the numerous pics of Rob he's posted right here. My knowledge of Hollywood stars is not very good. Rob will have to suggest who should star as him.

Snappy, who would you like to portray you?

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 11:32 AM

Sorry snappy!! No i haven't seen any of the pics. haha. i just think james vander beek rules and needs to get back into acting.

how about fred savage?? haha

"quality of life in nyc is very VERY bad for a lot of people who don't make a lot of money."

This is true.

You might like Carrboro, small town near Chapel Hill. Plenty of gay people, anarchists, etc., in the area, and good food and it's inexpensive compared to NYC. But you can't live outside New York unless you know how to drive.

Jackson Heights. It's cheap and highly diverse, with a large gay population (mostly of color and also paired up). However, I felt very isolated both as a single person and because my social life was in Bushwick. You would need a roommate to get your rent down to $800 or so. The apartments are mostly teens, 20s, and 30s and very large. $1500 or $1600 is about what they charge for a two bedroom.

Bushwick. I think you would fit in best here. Tons of gay men, many with piercings. Those locals who are neither gay nor hipsters seem very tolerant to me. Largely hispanic. Lots of dogs too. Personally I prefer living in the residential area near Ridgewood rather than the lofts. That means Dekalb or Jefferson or Myrtle Wyckoff L train. One bedrooms are $1100 or $1200, shares are $600 to $800 each. See BushwickBK for more info. Any chance your roommate would move with you?

Posted by: mopar at April 20, 2009 11:49 AM

A big thank you to Amzi for being so generous with his time and knowledge Sunday. And also to Montrose. The two of them are walking encyclopedias of knowledge about buildings, architects, and people in Bed Stuy.

Posted by: mopar at April 20, 2009 11:50 AM

A good roommate you like is in many ways more important than cheap rent!

Posted by: mopar at April 20, 2009 11:52 AM

Why is everyone throwing out suggestions for fat women to play Snappy? I believe she implied she is curvy but not fat. As such, I'm proposing she be portrayed by Serena Williams. Who cares if Serena can act or not?!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 20, 2009 11:56 AM

thanks mopar (didnt make it to wendy's yet hahahah) for that info. i do read bushwickbk.com actually. i looked at an apt share in bushwick before i moved to park slope but i never heard back from the girl in time so i gave up and stuck it out in harlem for another month then randomly found my roommate in PS. he wouldnt move with me to a cheaper place tho. i dont know, i like it enough that maybe id rather try and find a second part time job or something. it's weird cuz even when my rent in harlem was 800 bux a month (all utilities included) i was still just as broke as i am now paying 1200. so i think it moreso comes down to learning how to budget money.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 11:57 AM

Yeah, a good roommate can't be beat. I thankfully found a great one through craigslist after living with a few friends. Am I the only one who thinks that it may be better living with a complete stranger then someone you are buddies with? I feel a stranger will be a little more considerate then a friend who thinks they can get away with stuff.

"Yeah, a good roommate can't be beat."

So true, so true.

You remember my terrible story about my good friend who moved in with roommates to save money but they turned out to be crackheads and they got in an argument and the next thing she knew she was homeless, broke, and without her security deposit. Then she ended up in an even more expensive rental because she had given up her rent controlled one bedroom. Horrible! Now she's working two jobs.

Posted by: mopar at April 20, 2009 12:22 PM

wow - what a horrible story mopar! it's amazing that nyc is really the only city in the country it seems that it is perfectly acceptable for adults to live with other adults in a roommate situation. i'm relatively young - and have friends who already own their own houses that live in texas, new mexico and even in florida. while i love it here, sometimes after hearing stories like what happened to your friend, i wonder if it's really worth it..

It's funny how the cult of the underdog skews popularity.
Susan Boyle's video has been up half a week and has nearly 34m views while this video of Ruth Henshall has been up 2 years and has less than 5% of the views (and most of them have been as a result of Susan).

Compare them for yourself:
Susan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY
Ruthie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt-IBJpEMzA

As good as Susan may be, she ain't no Ruthie.

Posted by: the chicken at April 20, 2009 12:43 PM

i dont think there is anything wrong with adults living with other adults that didnt know each other. you do what you have to do to get by and some people just dont like living alone. i know for a fact if i lived alone in my own place i'd be 500 pounds fatter and a lot smellier and my dog would be neglected. im just being honest.

OK...I've heard of just about everything bizarre and sexual but this is just soooo bad...a "crush video?"...

April 20 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court will
consider reviving a federal criminal law aimed at videos that show animal cruelty, agreeing to review a federal appeals court’s conclusion that the measure infringes speech rights.
The court will hear a government appeal in the case of a Virginia man who was sentenced to three years and one month in prison for selling videos that depict pit bulls fighting each other and attacking other animals. The lower court overturned the sentence.
The dispute centers on a 1999 law aimed primarily at “crush videos,” which show women crushing small animals with their feet in a manner that some people find sexually arousing. Although the law has yet to be applied in a crush-video case, the government has pressed at least three prosecutions in other contexts.
The Justice Department in its appeal likened animal cruelty to child pornography, which the Supreme Court has said doesn’t qualify as speech protected by the Constitution.
“Depictions of the intentional infliction of suffering on vulnerable creatures play no essential role in the expression of ideas,” the appeal contended.

Yes - you "train" your shinbone by rolling a glass bottle against it (like a rolling pin) to compact the bone.

Rule 34 DIBS....

Posted by: the chicken at April 20, 2009 1:01 PM

the Susan Boyle phenomenon has to do with who she is and maybe even our own perceptions of how we perceive who is "deserving" or "capable" of having talent. She went out onstage and blew all our perceptions out of the water and that's why she's loved so much.

I'm sure there will be more music from her when she's given the chance to perform. She's obviously wonderfully talented and going on what they say, this isn't the only song in her repertoire. I give her a huge amount of credit for puttig herself out there, without the violins, the orchestras, the fancy dress or professional hair and make-up. It takes a hell of a talent to do what she did, without all the fancy props.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 1:04 PM

The Chicken;

IMHO, Susan Boyle's rendition is better. I am still inspired to watch her video.

Posted by: benson at April 20, 2009 1:05 PM

Yes, chicken. I always got a kick out of "infantilism."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 1:05 PM

DIBS,

I'm actually a pretty big fan of the Church Street P.O. ever since they reopened after the post-9/11 cleanup. Not only do they have the do it yourself machines for packages, they usually have someone in the lobby helping people use them. Lines are reasonable and most employees are reasonably cheerful and helpful. But the biggest benefit is just the DIY machines -- you do not have to wait to mail a package.

Separate question for you (and other finance/investor types):

The RE conversation thread has me thinking about the stress tests. Is the U.S. actually going to come out and make representations about the financial condition of each bank, based upon its own representations that it has very thoroughly reviewed these banks? Lots of folks will be relying in this and I imagine there will eb qutie a market reaction. What recoruse to the banks have if the U.S. overstates the risk, driving shares down? What about investors, if the risk is understated? I imagine the lawyers for the banks and for the govt must be s--ting bricks. This is not at all my area of practice and I have no idea how these issues have been vetted, but it seems to me the govt must tread very, very carefully in what it says about the banks. And, they will have to fudge as much as possible without looking too fudgy. What are all you investors expecting to see in the types of disclosures that will be made (I don't mean in a thumbs up or down sense, but in the kinds of information that will be disclosed)? How impoprtant is the upcoming disclosure in May to your current investment thinking?

Posted by: slopefarm at April 20, 2009 1:06 PM

dibs- I read about them several years ago. I think people who do them should be flogged and put in solitary confinement in a 3 x 3 box for life.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 1:07 PM

okay is it just me or am i the only one NOT impressed with susan boyle's voice? i saw the video for the first time this weekend and told my friend, um, im sorry but if that voice was coming from someone "hot" or "sexy" no one would give a crap and she'd just sound normal. but because it comes from an ugly person we are supposed to be impressed?

*rob*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 1:09 PM

slope...yes, the one here at 45th & lex has the automatic machines and they are great.

I personally don't know the workings behind the stress test so I'm not sure how correct it is going to be in whatever its trying to predict. There have been various comments coming out of Street analysts on it and although they're inconclusive, they feel that most banks will pass. But this is outside my area of expertise for sure.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 1:10 PM

Ok...the stress test results are due out May 4 and the government is going to publish the methodology on April 24.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 1:13 PM

We'll just have to disagree on that Benson.

Both performances sent shivers down my spine but for Susan Boyle it was because we weren't expecting it. There was no bar before she sang but there will be one for her next song.

The truly great performers can do this repeatedly and get to you even if you are already expecting something great.

These two are my favourite "live" performances ever:

Bxgrl;

I agree with you about the Susan Boyle phenomenon, and think there is more to it. To have a frumpy, 47 year-old unemployed woman come out of nowhere and sing, wonderfully and with emotion, a song about holding on to your dream is truly amazing, espically in these tumultuous times. She is heaven-sent.

I think benson hit the nail on the head there. Susan Boyle is very very talented, but the timing of this song, from this person, at this time is a triple header!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 20, 2009 1:23 PM

gemini- it took me a week to get horrible images out of my head- and that was without ever watching one. I would not be able to. So I'm adding skinned alive to the list. I think before flogging. My only quibble with running them over with the truck is that it's too mercifully quick.

I wish...its so hard to get guys to come over when its raining. Are they all going to melt????

I wish there would still be some group on Atlantic in a "certain trade."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 3:08 PM

Or is it raining men?

Men are draining.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 20, 2009 3:10 PM

"Men are draining."

I'm gonna leave that one alone for now.

Benson, Sailmakers?

Posted by: cobblehiller at April 20, 2009 3:14 PM

Benson- You think I'm going to be the one to say it? Ha!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 20, 2009 3:17 PM

And the answer is.....

.....Mohawk Indians! There was a small community of Mohawks who lived in the vicinity of Atlantic and Clinton until the early 1980's or so.

Almost all of the men were riggers on skyscrapers (these are the guys who first put up the steel skeleton on a skyscraper). It was said that they were attracted to this line of work because the Mohawks had a very fine sense of balance, and could walk high up on the steel beams with ease.

Posted by: benson at April 20, 2009 3:20 PM

men need braining. Hallelujah.

I would say who, but I'm refraining.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 3:23 PM

Men like to think with their head.

Which head, however, is the issue....

Posted by: benson at April 20, 2009 3:24 PM

benson- many of them still do that kind of work and were much involved in the building of the World Trade Center.

gemini -- I was never a big fan, but judging from last night, JPJ is the last one making any real noise. Robert Plant is making pleasant music for us boomer fogeys, what ever happened to Jimmy?, and others will know better but I think Bonham is no longer with us.

It's easy to understand why Rob would think the the BBG, Brooklyn Museum and new Children's Museum "suck." Based on his own comments just today, he's clearly a poorly adjusted, bitter misanthrope with a crappy outlook on life in general.

Posted by: East New York at April 20, 2009 3:47 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 3:48 PM

I suspect rob goes home everyday and laughs at how people have reacted to the stuff he throws out!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 20, 2009 3:50 PM

And whoever suggested Chinatown Ice Cream Factory (I think it was the chicken and Biff). OMFG!!!!!
I nearly had an orgasm eating the ice cream. There were 6 of us and we each got a different flavor, so I was able to taste a few.

I was disappointed they didn't have the coconut or coconut fudge. I got a scoop of banana.....delish! Maybe the best banana I've had.

I tasted; mango, choco. chip, lychee, pistachio, almond cookie.
Out of those I loved the mango the best, then lychee.
Now that summer is rolling around, I'll be there daily.
Thanks alot guys!!! My thighs are going to expand. But Snappy will be happy.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 20, 2009 3:59 PM

There's a difference between saying those places suck and they're not to your taste. It's not the fault of the museums or the botanical gardens that you can't appreciate them. Your loss too.

Posted by: bxgrl at April 20, 2009 4:00 PM

Rob,
From your comments, you should try a trip to New Orleans. It is beautiful and laid back. Spring is in full bloom. My kids play barefoot, we go to crawfish boils on the weekends, Jazz Fest is the next couple of weeks. and yes, you could find hundreds of apartments with that porch and pink lemonade. and also be in a real city (with lots of problems) with a big gay community, etc. etc.

Posted by: nola at April 20, 2009 4:05 PM

Dave, Abu's Bakery is right off of Bedford (west of), on the south side of Fulton. The owner was super nice. Hubby and I were talking with him and another guy that was just hanging around, for a while.

The cake was really good. Hubby is doing a project nearby and I will ask him to bring me something else from there. I really liked it. It was simple but delicious.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 20, 2009 4:05 PM

Rob, I believe you do mean well. I think bxgrl said it well at 4:00. I'm not a huge fan of the opera, it's not to my taste (I know, I know...for shame), but I can't imagine saying it sucks. I can understand how others could appreciate and love it.

DIBS;

Wikipedia is wrong (surprise!). I know somebody who grew up on Garfiled back in the day (the guy is something like 90) and Al grew up on that block. In fact, the area around 4th Ave and Union was the biggest Italian enclave in Brooklyn back in those days, and it is virtually gone now.

Well, I've always kept my hair clean so I've never encountered Seba and I'm sure I had flings with Dia as a baby.

He was born somewhere in the Navy yard area. He moved to Garfield (and grew up ther) at age 14. I saw it several places.

Benson - there are defintely a few Italian strongholds still around there - especiually on 3rd avenue and Union/Carroll etc

Rob - mine is Peaches Carlton!

LOUD. my roommate was telling me about it. i was like whoa who is making those noises? i thought the other loud lesbian couple who lives upstairs from us found a new girl to bring into the bedroom. it's actually kind of disturbing to think about.

benson- many of the Mohawks came back to help cleaning up the WTC after 9-11. It was terribly sad, not only because of what happened but so many of them had helped build it and for some it was considered the crowning achievement of their work. There was also an Irish ironworker who volunteered with us for the same reason. He showed us pictures he took from the top of the structure when it was only the steel beams.

Hubby will bring home something sweet for us to have together and he'll turn around and it'll be gone; in my tummy...none for him!
Don't leave me home alone with sweets, they'll all be gone in one sitting, I'm not kidding.

If we have a cake for a party and say there's half left over. Next day, I'll devour the rest of it by myself. That's why I can't keep any sweets at home. It's dangerous. I'm like an out of control addict.

M4L, my wife is blessed with the world's most amazing metabolism, which can be incredibly annoying to someone like me who can gain 5 pounds just looking at a cheeseburger. She was basically told by her doctor the first time she was pregnant to eat as much ice cream and high fat foods as possible as the doctor was worried she was too thin. I don't think it's possible for her to surpass 115 pounds, and she isn't short. Me, on the other hand, gained something like 25 sympathy pounds during that pregnancy!

Rob, don't you say a thing! How do you know how old this girl is? Sounds like she's enjoying herself.

Slopefarm, did you enjoy the performance? I went to a dance performance in Bushwick that had Mexican, Carribean, modern, postmodern, and about a million other kinds of dance. My favorite part were two dancers doing what I call hip hop but they call breaking or uprock or freestyle, both from Bushwick, who apparently helped create the genre. King Uprock said his mom was a salsa dancer, and he applied the salsa moves to funk music and that's how his style came about.

"BRG!! Half a cake???"

THL, you don't want to know. I'm telling you I can consume alot of chocolate in one sitting. Half a gallon of ice cream, give me an hour!

I was really thin for a long time but within the last couple of years I've gained weight :-(
Honestly I could stand to shed a few pounds.

This one is for the brownstone liberals. And you know that's most of you.

The part of the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle that the liberal media (i.e. NYTimes, CNN, MSNBC, Newsweek, Time Magazine, CBS nightly news and Good Morning America) won't tell you.

Who couldn't (except Biff's wife)? As long as you're happy and healthy then enjoy. From what you say you eat healthy otherwise. So as long as you're not doing that every day then enjoy. Like I said to Dave, I don't want another ten years if all I can eat is straw and soy. That's not going to be a happy ten years. I want to enjoy my life.

"Because it might wash off the dirt?"

Haha Snark - Exactly! And it makes my Chuck Taylors all soggy.

Rob,
A reader just alerted us to your 4:31 post. This is very troubling. You HAVE to call Child Protective Services at Vinca suggests. You have a moral obligation to do this.

Oh my goodness relax. She's probably much older than she appears, and from Rob's description, is clearly doing something she wants to.
