Hi all;
I'm on the road again. I'm in San Francisco again, due to a sudden customer request. Next week: Boston, and then in a few weeks I have to go meet a new customer in Israel. I'm looking forward to going to Israel, as I haven't been there for awhile. I like the old city of Jerusalem in particular.
I saw that yesterday was quite an "active" day on Brownstoner! I missed the action.
That's it for now. Catch you when I can.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 9:24 AM
Hi Benson! You missed all the cat talk here yesterday :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 9:25 AM
Snappy;
I've installed a "cat talk filter" on my laptop. It automatically eliminates any posts regarding cats. Hence, the OT is reduced from 250 posts to 55. However, there was a post that got through regarding "cat puke".
:-)
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 9:28 AM
Can you please automatically forward all the filtered cat talk to me?
Posted by: Arkady at April 15, 2009 9:30 AM
FIGHT THE POWER PEOPLE! i was talking to someone yesterday and she said she owes taxes this year and isnt going to send it in. im doing the same. uncle sam can suck my you know what.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 15, 2009 9:31 AM
Yeah, rob, that'll work. Wait 'till you get fined for that and have to pay an even larger bill. You think life is bad now!!!

NEVER MESS with the IRS
Posted by: gemini10 at April 15, 2009 9:39 AM
dave actually i wanted to ask you something. for the first time ever (not sure why) i got my 401k quarterly statement back. it must have been going to the wrong address for years or something. anyway, i have completely no clue how to understand what all the numbers mean. i wanted to ask you if i could treat you to a drink one night after work if you could go over just what the hell the entire thing means.
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 15, 2009 9:40 AM
Don't do it Rob.
The IRS can 'f***' with you in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Your total debt, if you gave me the correct figures last night is only $300 +/- after your Fed Refund.
Deal with it.
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 15, 2009 9:41 AM
Rob, not paying taxes only works if you are a politician or a potential cabinet appointee. The rest of us shmutz, have to pay. Although I would guess a lot of people will not be payng this year.
Posted by: sam at April 15, 2009 9:41 AM
sure, rob, I'd do that.

FGVOTD (Feel Good Video of the Day):
This one is for DIBS and all other karoake lovers out there. Which of the four costumes are you most likely to wear?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REElUors1pQ
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 9:44 AM
Rob, are you a tea bagger or something? Why would you stop paying taxes this year? Pentagon spending is being cut, all kinds of wasteful spending is being cut, and your tax dollars might actually fund some useful infrastructure and health care.
Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 9:45 AM
Rob, don't do that. Send in your taxes and work out a payment plan.
Everytime you go to buy a 40, stop yourself, take the money you would have spent on the booze and put it in a jar, by the end of the month I bet you'll have $100. You'll clear your tax bill in a few months.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 9:46 AM
well im not exactly sure what im supposed to do when i return my state taxes today. (ugh btw im sorry im probably coming across as a whoney brat who is complaining about having to pay not very much back) im just a little confused about how it works. can i send it back with a little note that says ill pay it back but i cant pay it back now? would that even fly? sorry even i cant believe im a 32 year old man asking these kinds of questions sometimes. :-/

"all kinds of wasteful spending is being cut"
Do tell? Please educate. I must have missed the newspaper that day.

Biff...my favorite ABBA song is Lay All Your Love On Me...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCiNhsqOTDo&feature=PlayList&p=2C2EDDB8F0CA159F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=22
It takes me right back to 1980, specifically a party at Ron Wendt's townhouse in Chicago that went all night long.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 9:49 AM
Is that really a feel good ABBA song, Biff?
Easy one, the white tights and black shorts outfit the guy is wearing! I don't wear dresses.
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 15, 2009 9:50 AM
No filtering allowed Benson! You must take the cat talk with the good!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 9:50 AM
mshook, we were having some useful conversation here until you introduced "tea bagging" Now, god knows where this thread will go.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 9:50 AM
Also Rob, don't panic...but do the responsible thing.
The first year Hubby and I had our own business we owed so much taxes...can you read 5 figures. I nearly fainted when I saw the number. I cried in the accountant's office. Fortunately we had money saved and paid it. But we learned from our mistake by not paying quarterly.
Learn from this, Rob. Make sure your employer is taking out enough taxes. Also, do try to save some money, even if it's $10 a month. Save something. You're going to need it for a rainy day.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 9:51 AM
Take it and run, DIBS, with my blessing.
Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 9:52 AM
mshook;
In other words, you can't back up your statement.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 9:54 AM
Rob - just pay it and be happy that you didn't give the gov't an interest free loan all year because that is what a tax refund amounts to. keep your money yours for as long as you can and pay at the last minute.
Posted by: GeorgeAppo at April 15, 2009 9:54 AM
Note to self: never release the FGVOTD in the middle of a discussion on income taxes. Always wait. Not even an ABBA video can lighten the mood under such circumstances. I should have waited to release that*

It's all about timing Biff. Gotta know when to pull it out. (oooh. that didn't sound so good, but you know what I meant!)

Rob - If you haven't filed already I would file an extension today just to buy yourself until August to figure out if you are going to set up a payment plan or will be able to pay.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 15, 2009 10:00 AM
Rob, I just read that you can set up a payment plan on line.
It's the third question down on the page I linked.
"How do I set up an installment agreement/payment plan?"
Just do it....and Good Luck
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 10:01 AM
I always wonder about so-called "straight" men who have a fascination with ABBA. They rank right up there in "gaydom" with Barbara Streisand and Liza Minelli.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 10:02 AM
Yes, you have to file for an extension. You are supposed to send a check with that filing for what you estimate that you will owe.

"FGVOTD (Feel Good Video of the Day):

Oh, I'd definitely wear the blue one. I wonder what kind of undergarmets one would wear under it. I'd probably wear blue bra/panty.

Rob -- definitely call. But the news keeps talking about a "kinder gentler" IRS (and I suppose a "kinder gentler" NYS tax office?)
You must file... but they will be "lenient" about paying if you can't right at the moment.
Late or not filing carries with it HUGE penalties. Being late with payments carries interest, usually. Call the IRS and/or the Dept of Revenue or whatever it's called, they will give you the exact info. BUT make sure you file today!! :-)
By the way... i'm looking for a post today where I can suggest a conspiracy theory or organized crime connection... nothing yet.... but I'm patient.

"you can make a fine living in a pair of heels'
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 10:16 AM
BRG...I loved "Priscilla..." Especially the scene at the end where they were dressed up as some kind of ostrichs or something and that song they played with their tongues darting in and out!!!!
Anybody know that song??? It was a classic diso song.

THL, the real show stealer for me was Simon freaking out and yelling in the taxi. And Alex's face priceless.
I told BH, with a straight face, that I want a $16,000 hand bag for my birthday. [And then we laughed hysterically.]
Romoaner was an ass to Bethany.

My husband was sickened with Jill saying she wasn't happy with the NEW MERCEDES truck b/c it didn't have an Ipod deck
I can't beleive someone could be soo ungrateful oh, oh and then she's all "I'm not happy, I don't want it" and Bobby is all - ok, I will take this and we will get you something else!
WOW - unreal
Ramona is horrid and her friends at least stuck up for Bethanny
OMG - Silex - wtf!!! - why on earth would you scream at the cabbie like that when all he did was forget to make a turn around the block before heading
I thought his whole "surprise" after the jewelry thing wasn't very creative - so what if the cabbie takes a different route home to Brooklyn - that's not really all too exciting - and then to lose your shit over the fact the cabbie forgets to do it - COME ON MAN - have some deceny - Alex's face was priceless.

BWHAHAHAAA
the cringe moment for me was Kelly saying hello in that squeeky mouse voice over and over. ACKK! Bethanny did a hilarious rendition.

Dave, I love that movie so much that I own it.
That scene is great....I can't help but sing along
Meeting Mr. Right, the man of my dreams
The one who showed me true love or at least it seems
With brown coco skin and curly black hair
It's just the way he looks at me, that gentle lovin' stare
Finally you come along
The way I feel about you it just can't be wrong
If you only knew the way I feel about you
I just can't describe him oh no no
It seemed so many times he seemed to be the one
But all he ever wanted was to have a little fun
But now you've come along and brightened up my world
In my heart I feel it I'm that special kind of girl
Finally you come along
The way I feel about you it just can't be wrong
If you only knew the way I feel about you
I just can't describe him oh no no
F I N A L L Y!

Benson, you know my political leanings and I know yours. We both read and watch the news (presumably) so we are both well aware of what cuts are being made and discussed, as well as what spending is being discussed. You see much of this as a bad thing, I see much of it as a positive thing. Nobody on this site needs me to regurgitate the news for them. A new jet from Lockheed is a waste in my book; funding for the arts, infrastructure, public health care, volcano monitoring, etc., is probably a waste in yours. So there we are. Here, kitty, kitty!
Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 10:33 AM
"And, you didn't answer my observation about the ABBA fascination!!!!"
DIBS:
1) Posting a video of ABBA as the FGVOTD does not a fascination make!
2) I think I more than make up for it by the fact I couldn't stand "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert" and Barbara Streisand (although I did enjoy watching Liza Minelli play Pookie Adams in the Sterile Cuckoo).
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 10:34 AM

EWWW- she's awful
Posted by: gemini10 at April 15, 2009 10:35 AM
BOD- YES!!! The Kelly voice impression was the BEST!
My second favorite. Jill. You know with the economy so bad right now we didn't go crazy with the gifts (As the camera is fixated on the $16K pricetag follow by the new Mercedes which was for sh*t b/c it didn't have a IPod dock.
Simon's freakout? Woah, just when they were becoming my new favorites. Alex's face was like...(Simon the cameras remember the cameras Simon oh dear god the cameras caught everything oh simon).
I'd have been like HEY! Think maybe we can we take it down a notch Big Red? Just to snap him back to his senses.

I liked Bethany explaining to Ramoaner about the branding! With Ramoaners cross-eyed shrug.
Kelly continues to reach new lows. Something is wrong with that girl.
Alex's face made me wonder how much longer they will be married. She's done with him.

"Biff, you don't like Priscilla?? How could you :("
I believe we had this discussion before and all named movies we felt we were supposed to like but didn't. I'm very picky with my movies.
Speaking of which, did anyone see the new Joaquin Phoenix one based in Brooklyn where he falls for a Jewish girl and another character played by Gwenyth Paltrow? Any good?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 10:45 AM
ROLF Biff!!!
No, they are so completely codependedent. They really wouldn't know how to live apart and good for them on that. She only made that face b/c of the cameras catching it. Breakdowns are private matters.
Back to Jill again. You Tamara from the OC blogs about the NY gals and she had this to say...
"Bobby surprises Jill with a new Mercedes GL 450, which happens to be the same car I have....All Jill could say was "not happy, not happy." Are you kidding me? That car is awesome! With that attitude Bobby should have gotten you a bus pass."
I'm no Tamara fan but that is spot on!

MSHook;
You are being disingenuous. Except for a couple of weapons programs and one agricultural subsidy, I know of NO cuts being made in any program. Even with the cuts in two weapons programs, the DOD's budget is going up due to an increase in other weapons systems (JSF) and the increase in the war in Afganistan. You made the statement that "all kinds of wasteful spending is being cut", and I'm calling you on it. Please identify them.
What I see in the newspaper is that is that our federal deficit will quadruple this year.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 10:51 AM
Very funny Biff!
I'm not so sure about Silex THL/DIBS. But time will tell.
Jill used to be my favorite, but the apt., the bag and the car just knocked her off. How crazed was that? I guess it's all what you're used to. I can't even imagine asking for a car or a fancy handbag for my birthday, let alone such expensive ones.
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 15, 2009 10:52 AM
That show is insane
you are right CH, she looked horrified and THL(calling him Big Red - haaaaaaaaaaaa) - good one!
Jill's reaction was priceless to the brand new mercedes SUV sans ipod deck - obviously, it's useless now!

Howabout Bethanny's Greenwich A+P scene.. Anyone actually tried her skinny desserts? she couldn't even givem away! LOL
Posted by: bowl of dicks at April 15, 2009 10:53 AM
Of course it will, now that the government is being somewhat honest about the spending on the two wars. And let's not even start to discuss where most of this deficit came from and who created it.
Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 10:55 AM
mshook...CONGRESS largely created it in a bi-partisan effort.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 10:56 AM
Ramona was a witch to Bethanny last night. Do you think LuAnn's book will do better now that she's divorcing the Count? I love Jill, but I hate her apartment. Boy...Brad was just gushing over Kelly's date. I think Brad needs a boyfriend.

Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 11:02 AM

Posted by: bowl of dicks at April 15, 2009 11:02 AM
Doesn't matter who had the majority. All the damage is not done in 2-4 years. The democrats in Congress had a hand in it too.
You're being naive if you think whoever held the majority for brief periods of time did ALL the damage.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:05 AM
Kensingtonian, thanks. The movie sounded interesting and got decent reviews but maybe I'll download it instead of going to see it in the theatre.
DIBS, you've made me paranoid with your ABBA fascination comment. Now what am I supposed to do with the FGVOTD's I have all lined up featuring the Village People, Diana Ross, Queen and Elton John? Maybe I need to insert some of my other favourites from the '70s like the Ramones, Sex Pistols and the Clash...
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 11:07 AM
No, no, or course I fully accept that many Democrats had a hand in all of it. A big, dirty, chicken-hearted hand.... Sorry, chicken.
Posted by: mshook at April 15, 2009 11:10 AM
"You're being naive if you think whoever held the majority for brief periods of time did ALL the damage."
Come on, DIBS...that's like my colleagues arguing that we're in this economic mess because of Clinton. Are you really saying that the Bush administration could not have done anything in 8 full years in office? (I'm saying that on the assumption one truly believes that Clinton was responsible...to me, Bush was an epic disaster in terms of what he's done to this country).

DIBS, I'll take the Police and The Doors in that list, although I suspect we would get more entertaining, time-capsule-esque videos from Depeche Mode and PSB.

"Fiber One's Caramel Delight"
That sounds yummy and healthy. I find Trader Joes has some pretty tasty cereals too. Unfortunately the really yummy ones like Vanilla granola clusters are 250+ calories per serving. I guess that's why they are so delicious.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 11:38 AM
BOD - I didn't know she was his 4th wife - yikes! -
red flag red flag
Biff - oh no you didn't! - the name your favorite cereal list.
Ok here goes in the order of my favorites
#1. Cinnamon Life
#2. Golden Grahams
#3. Honey Bunches of Oats -this one can be my #1 though during periods of "poordom" asI will eat 2-3 bowls for dinner
#4. Cracklin Oat Bran - although oddly really fattening!
#5. Peanut Butter Capn Crunch
#6. Raisin Nut Bran
#7. Special K - but only with banannas
Posted by: gemini10 at April 15, 2009 11:38 AM
Yes, cobble, oatmeal is great for the winter, especially with cinnamon & honey.
So these other recommendations above have NO SUGAR??
Wheatabix
Fiber One
Huney Nut Cheerios
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:39 AM
Honey Nut Cheerios...that's my indulgence.
Otherwise, it's fruit or eggs in the morning.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 11:39 AM
I don't care about calories. My triglycerides are too high and I have cut back on most of my refined sugar intake of which the bulk was soda.
I won't cut back on essentials: alcohol, desserts. But my breakfasts need a shift from Glazed donuts more days of the week!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:41 AM
Honey Nut Cheerios has refined sugar.
Try the Kasha cereals. They're sweetened with cane juice.

I keep thinking of Cobble's comments yesterday. Snappy, you've been so good about getting interviews. How do you do it? Do you have any tips to share with us? (I'm asking for me, not Cobblehiller -- no offense meant to Cobblehiller or any one else.)

and stay away from bananas.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 11:44 AM
I eat the healthy ones for breakfast and the sugary ones as late night snacks.
Yes and yes to any Life cereal and Golden Grahams.
Healthy?
Wheatabix, Total, Cheerios and Special K.
I'm also a fan of Oatmeal, and Cream of Wheat.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 15, 2009 11:45 AM
Yup, number 5 for 16 yrs.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 15, 2009 11:46 AM
Oh man THL - Cream of Wheat was my fav when I was a little boy. I should go get some from the store!
I'm addicted to Kashii when it comes to healthy cereals. They have this pretty good honeyish cheerio type that is less sweet then honey nut cheerios.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 15, 2009 11:46 AM
Mopar, I can only credit my resume and cover letters as my way in the door for an interview. I have a stock cover letter that I tweak for each job posting, making sure to highlight all of the skills that make me especially good for that particular job. I've also found it to be useful to state up front what my long-term goal is. I went on an interview recently where the employer told me he got hundreds of resumes but only picked 7 of us to actually interview. What caught his eye was my resume and the statement of a long-term goal in the cover letter.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 11:47 AM
bananas are fine...its REFINED sugars that are the problem.
I'll have to check with my MD on the cane sugars. I'm still suspect on that.
Any 100% fruit juice is fine.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:47 AM
Cream of wheat with a spoon full of honey, crushed bacon bits, hot sliced bananas, cinnamon and brown sugar simply rocks! It's my way of taking an otherwise healthy breakfast and making it killer :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 11:49 AM
DIBS, I know this may sound 'odd', but I used to eat dry Kashi or 'Cheerios-type' cereal and a banana. I would pack a plastic container and nibble it at my desk while I read my morning email. Sometimes with yogurt - also brought from home. Cereal also makes a good afternoon snack. [Ok, that makes me sound like a real geek or a 4 year old! LOL!]
Go for it mopar, I'm interested to hear what Snappy says! : )
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 15, 2009 11:49 AM
DH, that's a big comfort food for me. I like it with a pat of butter, a little dark brown sugar sprinkled on top and a little warm milk poured around the edge of the bowl.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 15, 2009 11:49 AM
Are there any 100% fruit juices out there that don't cost a fortune?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 11:50 AM
Cinnamon is a VERY effective way to reduce Triglycerides. It really works. I just am not into a spoonful of cinnamon a few times a week.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:50 AM
I once stopped consuming any product with refined sugar for a year....I never felt better in my life. I also lost 10 pounds the first month.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 11:50 AM
Since I'm a chocoholic I also snack on Guylian chocolates. There is NO SUGAR ADDED to those. They aren't bad, especially the dark chocolate.
I will still endulge in baked goods and ice cream so I have to cut where I can..soda, snacks and breakfast.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:52 AM
DIBS, yogurt with fruit and granola
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 11:53 AM
Dave I don't know if you like yogurt but I always take plain yogurt and add in fruit and wheat germ and/or cereal (something crunchy like Kashi Go Lean).
It feels like a desert but it's healthy and filling.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 15, 2009 11:53 AM
OMG CH BRG and I all had the same thought.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 15, 2009 11:54 AM
Yeah. I know. I could do the yogurt thing. Used to but got bored with it.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 11:54 AM
I'm not going to be disciplined and add things to other things. I eat breakfast here at the office, not at home and although we have a big commuinal refrigerator here its not likely something I'll stick with. There's milk supplied here weekly so I'll pop over to the Amish Market and see what they have on the shelves with no sugar.
Thanks for these recommendations.
I actually like cottage cheese too.

Snappy, Just keep an eye out for the sales and then go online to see if there's a coupon out there that you can print.
I just got 4 bottles of Ruby Red Gratefruit Juice for just .49/ea. Was on sale for $2.49 I had a $1.00 off coupon and my grocery store does double coupons.

Way to go THL! That's quite a bargain. Now I need to find a grocery that doubles coupons! The coupons that come in the Sunday ads are all garbage now. Very few food items and the ones that are tend to be microwave meals and other junk foods. Argh! I will have to start looking for coupons online at the company websites.

not too bad
then have a midday snack of apple or strawberries or red grapes

Hot cereals:
Cream of wheat with butter and salt.
Oatmeal with brown sugar.
I'm one of the few weirdos who loves lumpy oatmeal and cream of wheat. How does one make cream of wheat extra lumpy?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 12:05 PM

According to the American Cancer Society, "Testicular cancer is not common; a man's lifetime chance of developing testicular cancer is about 1 in 300"
Therefore, DIBS, my calculations would suggest 33 of the men you've been with have suffered from it. If we assume all 33 of them are down to one, then you have actually seen 19,967 of them.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 12:19 PM
Snappy, as I am reviewing this list of recruiters/search firms that etson gave me last night...I see that some of them handle lawyers. I'll forward to you if you like? [I'm cobblehiller1@gmail.com] Might be worth looking into? Or are you focusing on directly approaching employers?

Cobble, I'm registered with so many agencies and recruiters that I can no longer keep track of them! I think 21 or 22 of them? Who knows anymore! It's a real zoo over here on my computer. They all have my resume, but I keep emailing them and calling them regularly for updates while I do my own direct search.

Someone had the balls to post the info.

" I think 21 or 22 of them? Who knows anymore!"
Likewise Snappy! I had to make up a list of all my logins and passwords to keep track!
I also get junk mail job offers due to job board posting of resume. Here is an entertaining disclaimer [which I actually read, as I suspected this was crapola, and rightly so as it turns out!]

LOL Cobble! I get those junk job offers too. But they have slowed down since I posted on various sites in my profile that I do not want to be contacted for various types of positions - I keep getting financial advising companies soliciting me to join their ranks. Okay, I'm regretting my 12:26 post.
That was truly tasteless.
Very inappropriate. I'm usually the first person to cringe when someone makes a stupid comment about cancer because I've had people close in my life afflicted with it.
I am so so sorry....not feeling so great right now.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 12:37 PM
BRG, in the scheme of things, that's one of your least tasteless posts! Chin up, my dear. It wasn't bad.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 12:40 PM
BRG, my father passed away from cancer and everyone else in my immediate family has had cancer in some form and I was not offended by your post in the slightest. Almost all talk of cancer, including my stats posted above your post, is beneficial in that it raises awareness.
Now can we please go back to talking about any or all of the random and meaningless topics I've raised today?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 12:43 PM
BRG, you actually made me remember that it's Yizkor and I have to light a memorial candle tonight for my father. Otherwise, I might have forgotten, so thanks for that.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 12:47 PM
Thanks, Snappy!
Dave, I have a friend with high tryglicerides too. He cut back on soda, but hasn't had a blood test yet to see if it worked.
I wonder what effect cutting out refined carbs and potatoes would have, since these supposedly are very similar to sugar. But they're practically inescapable unless you eat all your meals at home. Or in Paris.
We could all move to Paris. I think that would help.
Posted by: mopar at April 15, 2009 12:48 PM
mopar...its PREDOMINANTLY the refined sugars and HCFS that are the main causes and just eliminating coke dropped my numbers to close to normal
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 12:52 PM
I went on a wheat-free, dairy-free, sugar-free diet once. It took some experimenting and getting used to, but it was pretty interesting.
I lost about 25 lbs., my recurrent sinus infections went away, I had a ton of energy, and went from a size 12 to a 6.

OK...I went to the Amish market and I bought a box of Benefit Nutrition's "Simply Fiber." Each serving has:
14g of Fiber (56% RDA)
NO Sugar
1g fat
0 trans fat
1g soluble fiber & 13 g insoluble fiber
0 cholesterol
0 sodium
And on the way back I got a cheeseburger, dill pickle and bag of chips.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 1:08 PM
CH, definitely.
I forgot to mention in the cereal discussion that I have the following boxes sitting in my office:
1) Puffins Peanut Butter (low fat, wheat free - since when was being wheat free something to advertise?)
2) Trader Joe's High Fiber Cereal
3) Trader Joe's Organic Raisin Bran Clusters
4) Trader Joe's Toasted Oatmeal Flakes
I also have two giant bottles of Fresca, my favourite soda.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 1:09 PM
How much sodium is in that lunch, DIBS?
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 15, 2009 1:10 PM
DIBS, that is FANTASTIC news. I will tell my friend.
Cobble, I have a couple of bizarre medical issues (like hypoglycemia) that go away when I eliminate refined carbs. I like eating that way. But it's sooooooooo hard because of restaurants. I am waiting for the day when it becomes normal for a restaurant to serve a protein, a green veg, and a reasonably healthy starch such as lentils.
Of course, I can't give up the margaritas.
Posted by: mopar at April 15, 2009 1:15 PM
cobble...I manage the sodium with 20 mg each of fosinopril and hydrochlorothiazide.
My cholesterol number is high (200 =/-) BUT my HDL is so high that my MD says I have a "negative" risk for heart disease due to cholesterol.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 1:16 PM
That fake fiber doesn't seem to do a thing, at least not for me. Oh, too much information, sorry!
Posted by: mopar at April 15, 2009 1:17 PM
I saw on the food network that there's a huge resurgence in the sale of pork rinds because they are all protein. no carbs.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 1:19 PM
OK...I'M SOOOO DONE WITH THIS. I just opened the box of this Simply Fiber shit and they look like pellets that you feed fish. I ate a handful and it's literally like eating sawdust.
What if you ate this all your life and were extremely healthy and never enjoyed meals that were delicious and bad for you and then you get hit by a bus???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 1:22 PM
mmmmmm....pork rinds. horribly salty and bad for you but sooooo good. forget the bagged stuff. you gotta cut em and cook em yourself. i miss my grammy :(

Hiya 'Tards! I was watching Boiler Room last night and i thought to myself "No wonder the Big Boys get away with this nonsense"!
The story "Equity Partner Sues Developers of 20 Henry Street" should scare the shit out of you but you're too stupid to be afraid! The whole Mutant Asset Bubbles is coming apart in real time and I guess most of you have the heads up the asses! Here read this!
"In the suit, AIG also requests that the defendants "take all steps necessary to secure and protect the Property to prevent further deterioration of the Project" and notes that "there is a substantial risk that the improvements to this unique landmark property will physically deteriorate beyond salvage before final judgment is entrested" and that "there is an equal risk that the Project will not be able to be completed in time to qualify for tax exemptions and abatements under New York City's J-51 tax incentive program, the loss of which jeopardizes the long-term economic viability of the Project."
And guess who going to take up the asses when this implodes? Yep you the retarded tax slave, no check that the unemployed tax slave! See you in 7 months...

I was having a discussion with her in the COTD thread about how there was nothing more to discuss about this place and she said that I didn't understand how to go on and on and on about something that had already been discussed to death. So I told her we had mastered that in the OT and invited her to come see. She responded...

I am proud to present my 29th post of the day! Please cue the balloons, the ribbons, the cheering and the Bugs Bunny overture.

Who says pork rinds are bad for you? I am pretty sure bacon is a health food. It helps me eat green vegetables.
Posted by: mopar at April 15, 2009 2:15 PM
Come on in the waters fine nomi! hi everyone. Been a little limited in my posting cause I have been busy. Shooting Flight of the Conchords tonight at Radio City!
Posted by: wasder at April 15, 2009 2:18 PM
I'm sure pork rinds are far healthier than bacon. The skin has far less fat in it.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 2:19 PM
Ok, Nomi, here it is just for you. You can now make your grand entrance...
Overture, curtains, lights,
This is it, the night of nights
No more rehearsing and nursing a part
We know every part by heart
Overture, curtains, lights
This is it, you'll hit the heights
And oh what heights we'll hit
On with the show this is it
Tonight what heights we'll hit
On with the show this is it

Welcome Nomi! Enjoy the madness :) Got any cats you'd care to discuss in detail?

I saw this on Animal Planet a week ago...women's (or men's if you dare) purses made out of Persian cat hair...

Where is Cobble with the OT Welcome Basket?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 2:21 PM
Dave, that's just sooooo wrong. And no, it won't match those italian boots :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 2:22 PM
So, I started writing a short story with DIBS and the 7 deadly sins. I used 4 of the 7, anyone want to finish it?
It's about him in a Karaoke Club and he sees a Mexican and an Asian.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 2:23 PM
Snappy....I'm wearin the Italian boots today!!!!! Bada bing.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 2:23 PM
Did anyone give Nomi the directions to get here? I hope she's not lost somewhere between the Restaurant of the Day and Today on the Forum!

What are you wearing with them Dave? Got a matching murse too? :)

I once chased Andrew Fletcher through a Long Island hotel looking for my friend that his roadie had deflowered.
(That may seem off topic, but it was in response to a post before you all went boring and began discussing cereal.)
According to his Bravo blog, I think Big Red freaked out because of something the camerapeople did that we did not see. Or something. He was vague. But I agree, it was not a good relationship moment -- it was one of those, "wow, I am so glad I am not on a reality show" moments.
But the real thing that puzzled me about last night's espisode was, WHY was Kelly running in TRAFFIC? Since when does anyone do that? She even made reference to training in traffic. Huh? Is she insane? Isn't that not legal? Isn't it sort of suicidal? I felt bad for all of those cabs backed up behind her. Hope Bravo paid them for their time.
Also, owl jewelry? I know owls are big on etsy, but please.
My love for Jill is growing. What was the name of the magazine that's doing the spread on her apartment? I think they said it was the May issue?
Posted by: Heather at April 15, 2009 2:26 PM
Dave, go tell her that there’s a welcoming committee waiting for her.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 2:27 PM
Snappy, keep it down!! Nomi will hear us before we get a chance to yell "SURPRISE!!!".
BRG, I hope you parked the big Caddy around the corner so Nomi doesn't suspect anything.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 2:28 PM
Okay everyone, let’s hide and when Nomi gets here we all yell out at the same time ‘Welcome’ and don’t forget to blow into your noise makers.
Who has the confetti to throw at her?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 2:29 PM
No but I did have a leather fanny pack in the early 90s.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 2:30 PM
Sorry, Biff. My excitement over new prospects for team OT got the best of me :) I'll go get in the corner now and light the candles on the cake.

And Snappy, hold off on cutting the cake and popping the bubbly. Let's see if we like her first. If we do, we celebrate. If not we give her the 'Randolph' beat down.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 2:51 PM
Rob, that's gonna suck. No way to sugar coat it. Take a hand-held video game or something to amuse yourself.

Gemini, that's what we're trying to figure out. Who's Park Dope? It's a meet and greet. Have some cake, even though Snappy spelled 'Nomi' wrong.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 2:54 PM

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 2:54 PM
We can always make another cake. Now, excuse me, I must use this valuable naptime to do something productive, like read the second Diana Gabaldon book and catch up on my "Cold Case" DVRs.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 2:55 PM
Snappy honey, you might want to get in the back of the Caddy. I've learned the hard way that there isn't enough room in the front, the steering wheel gets in the way.
;-)
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 2:55 PM
Rob - go to the one on Doyers Street - the one on Prince and Greene is JAMMED packed right now
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 15, 2009 2:56 PM

I suppose if the stick shift got in the way, you really would have learned the hard way about the perils of front car shenanigans.

I'm so old that the first time I did it in a car it was in a Model A Ford.
I kid you not.
But it was in 1980.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 3:02 PM
LOL about the stick shift!!!
Dave, are you sure that wasn't a Model T? LOL
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 3:05 PM
um, I would think one would want the stick shift easily accessible when driving. You want to be able to grab it quickly and yank it into park.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 3:05 PM
the steering wheel gets in the way, bayridgegirl. you are not supposed to be driving when you do it!!
you need to park, dope.

"um, I would think one would want the stick shift easily accessible when driving. You want to be able to grab it quickly and yank it into park."
Just be careful not to grab the emergency brake stick or you will release it prematurely.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 15, 2009 3:13 PM
"you need to park, dope."
Hilarious PD, but that's a bold OT newbie throwing it down like that at BRG. Are you sure you know who you are dealing with?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 3:13 PM
Kensingtonian, that's because you boldly jumped in here before we could organize anything. You quickly became a usual suspect. We didn't even have a chance to give you the customary beatdown. :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 15, 2009 3:19 PM

Why do you have to ask the black woman about slang terms?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 3:23 PM
^^^^I'm kidding btw
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 3:23 PM

Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 3:26 PM
"Why do you have to ask the black woman about slang terms?"
Um, because she referenced you calling her a "dope" and I wanted her to know that "dope" means "cool" in her case, as opposed to the traditional meaning when applied to you.
"We black women know everything...that's why he asked LOL!"
Snappy, you are so dope!!

For those of you who pay taxes, something to think about.
I heard a number recently which is very scary.
The report was that approximately 41,000 families in NYC actually pay federal income taxes.
The rest do not.
In other words, we are so far into an entitlement society that soon the very idea of paying your way will become alien to our society.
Before too many of you shoot back with the knee jerk liberal reaction, keep in mind that, at some level, somebody will have to pay.
It could be your kids or grandkids. someone will have to pay the bill. And that doesn't necessarily mean in terms of money. It could be in terms of a low standard of living, less freedom or less hope.
Think about it. for real.
Also keep in mind that the idea of taxes was originally to maintain national defense and roads to facilitate interstate commerce. People left Europe for a reason.

Would you actually cite the reference for the report?
Otherwise I think we can chalk this up to someone pulling another number out of his asshole.

How do you break open a coconut? I love them but don't eat have, cause we can't figure out how to open it.
I remember my dad opening them up with a screwdriver and a hammer. He'd put the tip of the screwdriver on the coconut and then tap it with the hammer. Hubby tried it last summer and I guess he hammered it too hard cause the coconut broke in two and went flying in different directions. The juice was everywhere.
Is there an easy way?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 15, 2009 4:35 PM
legion, can you provide a cite? That is an impossible number. There are millions of people working salaried jobs in this City with payroll deductions for fed. taxes. Are you saying they are all (except for 41000) itemizing their way out of any tax liability? There is no point in debating your rhetorical point until you can back up your data.

Hi folks;
I'm back. I think I saw the same report to which Legion is referring, and he's a bit off. What the report stated is that there are 41,000 families in NYS who will be subjected to the higher tax rate just approved by the clowns in Albany. The vast majority of these families live in the NYC area. The point of the report was speculation that some of these folks will pick up and move yto NJ or CT.,therefore further hurting the NYC economy.
Legion's larger point is also correct. We now find ourselves is a situation where only half the people in the US pay any income taxes at all. This is dangerous for a democracy. Everyone should have a stake in the system.

benson and legion,
We've had welfare reform since 1996. Public assistance rolls are nothing like they used to be. Who are the overentitled untaxed masses you are talking about? People who work but whose income is offset by the EIC? Those who became unemployed during the recession? Children? College students? Or is this a point about undocumented immigrants? I assume you are not talking about people who avoid taxes through offshore accounts. Let's get specific about who you are talking about and what you think should be done about it.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 15, 2009 4:54 PM
Allow me to define the point further. The 41,000 people paying taxes number comes from Mayor Bloomberg. he stated that this is the number paying 50% of NYC taxes. (not the 100% I initially stated). However, the larger point remains valid. Assuming the sliding tax scale, we know that the top 1% of earners pay 50%, this is even cited in the NYTimes articles on the subject. The top 2% accordingly pays 50-80%, by the time you get to the top 5%, you pretty much have all the taxes paid. So by my math you have to conclude that the tax bill is being carried by about 100,000-200,000 people.
Take into account the number of people you personally know receiving refunds. The number of illegal aliens in the city. The number not employed. The number off the books. The number not filing returns. The number of students, etc. etc. It should not be so surprising.
Posted by: Legion at April 15, 2009 4:54 PM

I appreciate that you try to engage in a debate, rather than throw out assertions and then run away (like mshook did at the beginning of this thread).
I'm not talking about welfare or any other type of dole. I'm talking about folks who earn some type of income, but find that they don't pay taxes through a combination of both the EIC and deductions.
I am not advocating for a flat tax here (though frankly, I think it is a great idea). My only point is that everyone should pay some income tax, even if it is only a small nominal amount. It is dangerous for a democracy to have folks who have no stake in the system.

benson if you look at the numbers, THEY DO PAY TAXES. Its just that the taxes they pay amount to a very, very small number of the total tax revenues taken in by the government; a fact that most of us are fully aware of. According to the article its something less than 2% of tax revenues, but they do pay taxes.
Alll you have to do is look at the tax tables to figure out how much somebody making $20k, 30k or 40k will make but, yes, they do pay some taxes.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 15, 2009 5:04 PM
Yeah Mopar, that type of situation isn't really all that uncommon in the city. I have encountered a few manipulative people over the years, but not quite as crazy as this woman seems. The people I encountered were extremely manipulative, smart and able to get what they wanted legally. This girl seems as though she is mentally ill to some extent, and not very smart.
I'm really not sure why it got published. It was very detailed with all the sexually explicit hearsay, but was very fuzzy when it came to the actual crimes. I think it was the whole Williamsburg hipster thing that made it stand out - not surprising this happened though, I find the whole hipster set to be way too trusting of complete strangers. You're still in the big city, you have to be careful. If a cute asian hipster wants to give you head at the Turkey's nest, fine - but don't lease her a Jetta or deposit checks and give her cash. Legion, are you suggesting we should tax blue collar wage earners more and the top 1% less? We do have a progressive income tax code at all three levels of government, although the tax code at each level is much less progressive than it was in the 1950s-60s. That progressivity is offset by sales taxes, in which the same rate is charged to all, and property taxes. Perhaps the problem isn't the tax code so much as increasing income inequality.
Reasonable people can agree or disagree as to whether NYS's recent tax increase at the top is a good or bad way to close the State's huge deficit. I suspect, however, that if the State started laying off thousands of workers instead, you would see more people not paying any taxes at all. I also think that the people who will be paying the increase are sufficiently well off that the increase is not going to force them to move. At that level, you either love the UES or you love northern Greenwich, CT. The tax increase isn't going to change anyone's mind about that.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 15, 2009 5:10 PM
DIBS;
Are we reading the same article? Please note this statement:
"Mr. Obama is adding to this trend with his “Make Work Pay” tax cut that means almost 50% of the country will no longer pay any income taxes, up from a little over 40% today"
The tax tables do not tell the whole story. If you are in this income group, you calculate your nominal income tax (from the tables), and then they are wiped out by the EIC. I know people who do not pay income tax this way (my mother-in-law being one).
What President Obama is proposing is to take the EIC a step further. He wants it to not only cancel out the income tax, but he wants it to cancel out the SS witholding tax for folks in this bracket.

Going back to Legion's point: I congratulate Mayor Bloomberg for being a true mensch and going against the populist class-warfare tide. I always admire a politician who stands up for something on principle, even if it causes him to lose some popularity. That's the difference between a leader, and an ordinary hack politican (Hack politician: see Albany).

Posted by: etson at April 15, 2009 5:21 PM
Benson, my last post went out before I read your last two. Now I understand you better, but disagree. I don't see people in the EIC range as not having a stake in the system. They are working -- you have to earn income to earn the earned income credit. If people at that level had to pay taxes that ate into the money they need just to get by each day, they would actually have less of a stake in the system and would resent it more. This is not an incentive not to work, and in fact, if their income rises out of EIC range, they will have more disposable income even after taxes. So they have a stake in the economy, their jobs, schools, etc. And those at the top have a stake in the system continuing to provide those who are struggling with not only a stake in the system but a sense of fairness and opportunity. I also think that those in teh EIC range have many pressing needs that they do not have the funds for. The tax relief they receive is going to go straight into economic activity.
Go back 150 years, we relied almost exclusively on property taxes and tariffs. So it is far from a given that everyone must pay income taxes.

Slopefarm;
You're missing my point,I think. When I say "stake in the system", I am referring to the operation of our government, and the way in which it allocates resources. So, to make my point more clear: it is a dangerous thing to have folks who do not pay into government, but only receive benefits from it, in the form of an EIC credit. I am not stating that people who receive the EIC are lazy, or free loaders, or any such thing. I'm only stating that it is a natural human tendency to be less concerned about something in which you have no stake.
You and I could probably argue all day about the proper size of government and even if we disagree, I'll respect what you advocate because you a stakeholder. Whatever tax laws you would propose would apply equally to you as well as me.
When you have a large group of folks who have no such stake, they will not be thinking along the same lines. One can read the history of the Roman Empire, and find that such a situation was a key contributor to its decline and fall. Towards the end of its days, the Roman Empire had few true citizens left, hence the term "Bread and Circuses".

I don't think most shareholders have been all that concerned with the stakes in their companies, benson. Unless by "stake" you mean "dividends paid," which, some might argue, may have helped lead to this mess in the first place.
Furthermore, considering how much those EIC credited folk spend on sales tax and social security, I'm not sure why you think they have no stake.

Just back from sending in my taxes. To add to Benson's statement about having a "stake in government", as a populace. It is well understood that the road to disenfranchisement in the running of government is for the people to become totally dependent on the government. Slopefarm, while pointing out the fact that many do pay taxes, misses the larger point about the role of government and taxes in our lives.
As I initially stated, the idea of taxes was originally intended to set up a central government to serve the states in the union better, by centralizing a national defense and maintaining roads for interstate commerce. Somewhere along the road from Paul Revere's ride two hundred thirty three years ago to today, we are now expected to pay for the poverty problems of other sovereign nations, for the defense of half the planet from rogue dictators and for the lawyers of "enemy combatants" now entitled to constitutional rights while shouting "death to America", all through our taxes.
What's more, with president Obama's latest budget and spending bills (spending more than all previous presidents combined in the first three months of office), we are assured to be dependent on big daddy government for generations to come.
This is a BAD thing, because it saps all incentive from people to achieve. It replaces the idea of arriving legally from another nation, driving a cab, buying that cab, then two more, then buying a fleet and starting an entire new company, in a single generation. Or perhaps inventing a new vaccine through venture capital, or perhaps walking on the moon (who will fund a mission to Mars now that we are too busy worrying if the baby boomers will get enough depends from their Advantage Medicare program). It replaces that dream with the tepid and soul crushing mediocrity of; you will get enough cheese and your teeth pulled in due time if you should require it.
Don't believe me? You are all New Yorkers, ask a Russian about the old Soviet system. Don't tell me you don't know one, this is New York.

legion: you are one sick little puppy.
get over it, pay your damn taxes, everybody pays taxes, ESPECIALLY the little people. I have paid taxes every year of my adult life, from when I was a student holding down part time jobs to now. If you really think most americans do not pay taxes you are living in a brainwashed never never land of inbred morons.
on another topic: the truly wealthy will NEVER leave NYC. Never. they may threaten like a three year old threatening to hold his breath, but they live and breathe for the social prestige, cachet, and ego-trip that only comes from being rich in gotham.
where would they go for a similar high? Chapel Hill? I don't think so.

Sam;
Man, what has gotten into you? If you disagree with someone, you don't have to make it personal.
As for the percentage of people paying the federal income taxes, please see this:
http://kenhoma.wordpress.com/2009/04/13/everyone-should-pay-income-taxes/
The man who wrote this article is a Georgetown processor. Is this guy an inbred moron too, or simply someone with whom you disagree?
As for the rich leaving NYC: guys who are rich have multiple residences. Take Trump, Bloomberg, Madonna, you name it. Sure, they'll always have a pied-a-tere (sp?) in NYC, but will they set up shop here and pay the taxes? NYC used to be home of the great majority of the corporate headquarters of the Fortune 500. During the 60's and 70's, the city fathers had the same attitude: they're not going anywhere, we can tax them as we wish. Well, they sure found out the hard way as GE, Texaco, Pepsi, Exxon, American Airlines and many, many others left.

i know it's late in the day and many people dont read that late in the day (watching top model so i decided to check in this thread.) good post legion, and from my perspective very spot on. of course a lot of people would think my opinion on anything serious to be a bit chary, but still..

Make that "Georgetown professor". I'm thinking too much of my engineering work.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 8:19 PM
benson, I think you are going on these pain-in-the-ass business trips at an age when you really should be on pleasure trips as penance for voting for Sarah Palin.
Do you think that NYC is worse off today than back in the day when the goddam fortune 500 bloodsucking vampires were all on Madisone Avenue? Are you nuts or have the tremors given you the shakes?
Posted by: sam at April 15, 2009 8:26 PM
Whatever, Sam.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 8:31 PM
One more thing Sam;
I go on these business trips because I am happy to have a good-paying job, no matter what it takes. I take nothing for granted. I have a wife with Lupus to take care of, and my daughter has MS. If I have to break my back to provide for my family, I'm happy to do it. I don't look to anyone for my succor, which was the point of Legion's last post.
Posted by: benson at April 15, 2009 8:40 PM
Benson, forgive me, I have relatives with lupus too, but, uh... doesn't that make you think that perhaps a system that ensures their continued coverage would be better than the current one?
There are many people in this country that break their back, and most of them don't take business trips to silicon valley as part of that experience.
Sorry, I feel like an ass for pointing this out, what with the earthquake and illnesses and all, I just really hate it when people demonize the poor and whine about how everyone should horatio alger it like they did. Newsflash: most people try.

I can see that the tWhat is back with his cyberturrets.
I have noticed that the tWhat responds most negatively to film references and quotes. Something to which he seems to think he has some larger insight on.
what happened? slow night at the NAMBLA convention?
Someday this tWhat is gonna give up.
As for SAM, you obviously missed the point of the discussion entirely. It's not griping about paying taxes, it's about the danger of only a small portion of the population paying the taxes and the implications on societal structure/expectations.
Turn down the lib-knee-jerk-meter a bit.

Heather, I don't know who you are but I love you. Oh! Might be the margaritas talking.
Posted by: mopar at April 15, 2009 11:40 PM
Heather;
I don't understand your post, frankly. Let me try to clarify some points:
-where do I demonize the poor? I am completely lost by this statement, and I think you might be projecting on my behalf. I do not say one unkind thing about the poor in my statements above. I wish you would respect that I might just have a different opinion than you as to best way to go about things. I'll tell you, I'm really getting tired of debates on Brownstoner degrading into accusations about intentions. I am sure that you think the way you do because you believe that it is the best way to govern ourselves in a democracy, and I wish you would accord the same respect to me.
-likewise, I do not know what the heck you are talking about with your Horatio Alger comment. Where do I hold myself up as some type of example for all to follow? When I wrote about breaking my back and travelling, I was responding to Sam's sneer about what a person my age should be doing.
-finally, it is precisely because I and my family have to contend with two chronic diseases that I want the government OUT of the health care field. I'd sooner move before my wife and daughter have to go to some government medical clinic, as they have in England. I pay through the nose for their medical care, and I'm happy to do so, despite the burden it presents. I work for my money, and I spend it on the things I want. That is freedom to me.
Finally, my overall point was: I try to live by my principles. Believe me, it would be a HUGE financial burden off my back if I could unload my medical bills on the taxpayer. I could slow down and enjoy life more. However, once again, I try to live by my principles. If you don't agree with them, that's fine, but stop accusing me of demonizing anybody or any other bad intentions.
I think Mr. B or someone here should teach folks basic manners as to how to have a debate. Rule # 1: respect your debating partner, and treat them as you would like to be treated. Rule # 2: don't put words in people's mouths, and don't project their intentions.

"I'd sooner move before my wife and daughter have to go to some government medical clinic, as they have in England."
Benson, there are many worse things than the UK National Health Service. In most cases, private operations are performed in NHS hospitals because they have the best equipment and the same doctors often have both public and private practices.
I didn't use to be a fan of the NHS but, having seen how the rest of the world does it, I have no complaints.

Legion, anybody who waits until the April 15 clusterfuck (rob excluded) to send in his taxes, as you mentioned that you did, needs his head examined.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 16, 2009 8:07 AM
Benson, I have nothing but respect for you, your family and all of your hard work. However, I found your statement that the poor have little stake in their government because they don't pay taxes (and may in the future pay even less) to be both condescending and -- well, kinda offensive. In my opinion. Based on my opinion, I also made some assumptions about you. I don't know you -- they could be wrong.
But let me point out the obvious flaw in your argument again. Paying taxes doesn't give one a "stake" in the government. The government is not a corporation. We don't own shares in it. We each get one vote, that's it. And we get that vote whether we make your salary or your gardener's.
