After yesterday's glorious perfection could today's weather be any more depressing?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 6, 2009 9:17 AM
Anyone ever taken any Chinese cooking lessons? (yes I know there are many variations thereof).Somehow I bet there's an old Chinese lady on Hester Street that you can't find on the internet.
Posted by: denton at April 6, 2009 9:20 AM
i like this kind of weather. but yesterday was very nice out though. i really wanted to take a space day today but figured it would be a bad idea. :(

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 6, 2009 9:22 AM
yeah Rob - you're eating the wrong kinds. chinese food is delicious.
good morning everyone!
Posted by: the chicken at April 6, 2009 9:26 AM
You're most likely going to the wrong places. There's just as much bad Chinese food in NYC as there are bad Ray's pizzas.
Don't know who to recommend where you live & work but there's a lot of great restaurants here in midtown.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 9:27 AM
Denton, Maybe try to ask around some of the big Asian markets on 8th Avenue like Hong Kong supermarket(@60th St). Or perhaps at your favorite restaurants.
Rob, the food served in Chinese homes is vastly different from that of the take out joints. They "Americanize" it to make it more palatable to us. It's like calling a Big Mac a hamburger or Dominos pizza. They only barely resemble the real thing.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 6, 2009 9:31 AM
My various Chinese bfs over the years have taught me how to make some great dishes. I need to master Ma Po Dou Fu.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 9:37 AM
hmm makes sense, i guess ive really only had the take-out kind. or maybe im allergic to something it (msg?) i almost always feel like ass right after i eat it. like i have the flu or something!

Posted by: PitbullNYC at April 6, 2009 9:38 AM
Rob, try a couple of these

"I need to master Ma Po Dou Fu."
Dave- I know I could Google that to find out what it REALLY is but any time you say something like that I just assume it's sexual in nature. LOL.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at April 6, 2009 9:43 AM
most chinese take-out is loaded with msg and will make you feel really bad if you are sensitive to it.
Go to any of the major chinatown and pick a restaurant that's full of asians. Look around the tables and point to any of the dishes that you like the look of and give it a go.
1.3 billion chinamen can't all be wrong!
Posted by: the chicken at April 6, 2009 9:43 AM
THL, get your mind out of the gutter. It's spicy bean curd, usually with ground pork; yhe latter which may be omitted this weak for our Jewish brethren unless of course the pork is on sale at half price :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 9:45 AM
"Somehow I bet there's an old Chinese lady on Hester Street that you can't find on the internet."
Somehow I beter there's a young Chinese gentleman on Hester Street that DIBS found on the internet.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 6, 2009 9:45 AM
"Ma Po Dou Fu" literally means "pock-marked old woman tofu".
It's a pretty spicy speciality of the szechuan province made with slippery beancurd, ground pork, chillies, and szechuan peppercorns.
Posted by: the chicken at April 6, 2009 9:45 AM
"chinamen"
Reminds me of the dialogue from the Kung Fu series with David Carradine. Even as a child, I questioned why they were referring to this gweillo as a Chinaman. How many of you knew that Bruce Lee was considered for the role? I loved the series, however.
Master Po: Close your eyes. What do you hear?
Young Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Caine: No.
Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet?
Caine: Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 6, 2009 9:48 AM
I have Fuchsia Dunlop's cookbooks, also Martin Yan's and a couple of others. I'm still suspicious that so much comes out of jars.
Posted by: denton at April 6, 2009 9:52 AM
chicken...the best I've had in NYC (and the spiciest) has always been from Grand Szechuan which has 3-4 locations in Manhattan.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 9:58 AM
As a child, I used to watch Martin Yan's cooking show years and years ago. I saw him on TV recently. He hasn't aged at all! We should all be eating what he's eating.
Posted by: Biff Champion at April 6, 2009 9:59 AM
But, there is probably not one good Chinese restaurant within 1.5-2 miles of where I am in Bed Stuy; so I oftentimes order it here at the office and bring it home myself.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 10:01 AM
Dave,
You are starting to sound like you've been hanging out with Propjoe. Seriously, Jews who don't eat pork because they keep kosher don't eat it all year long -- they wouldn't just stop this week. Those of us who do eat pork during the year vary greatly on how much we observe the kosher laws during passover. And, if you do observe Passover, you would have to give up more than the pork from Chinese cooking: rice (unless you are Sephardic), probably cornstarch, and perhaps even the tofu (is a soybean a legume? -- I think you are supposed to avoid legumes, again, unless you are Sephardic). As you can see, I am not very observant.
If I don't get to say this later, a happy Passover and Easter to all.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 6, 2009 10:13 AM
It was a snarky comment, slopefarm.
Happy Passover & Easter to all.
Did any of you hear the story about the sun being at the same spot it was when the earth was created very 26 years, according to the Talmud? It will be Wednesday at sunrise.

I do not remember this but my sister insists I made a ham for Passover last year. I had them over for dinner- but it wasn't a Passover dinner. Unless I truly have crossed over to the dark side.

I enjoyed this blast from the past:
NY Daily News, July 13th 1997
"BOOMING BROWNSTONES - SOARING SALES IN HEIGHTS, COBBLE HILL & CARROLL GARDENS"
http://tinyurl.com/clrh22
This is the best part:
"Brokers say these things happen in cycles, and many have gut feelings that escalating prices will soon level off.
They remember a similar boom in the early '80s, followed by the stock market crash in 1987. People who bought at the market peak and then had no choice but to sell during the slump got soaked.
But those who could ride out the lean times are now sitting pretty as real estate madness swirls around them.
Besides, they say, offering a spin on the situation, Brownstone Brooklyn has always been undervalued and the area is finally reaching the market value it deserves."
Posted by: NorthHeights at April 6, 2009 10:36 AM
Denton: Instead of a Chinese grandmother, you can try Norm Weinstein. Not sure if he still teaches in Brooklyn (hotwok@interport.net). Otherwise you can find him at ICE in Manhattan.
Posted by: vinca at April 6, 2009 10:48 AM
I didn't take it too seriously, Dave; I should have added a wink to be clear.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 6, 2009 10:49 AM
Master Po: Close your eyes. What do you feel?
Dave: I feel the cucumber, I hear the birds.
Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Dave: Yes, it's going in sync with the cucumber.
Po: Do you hear the grasshopper that is at your feet?
Caine: Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Po: Master, May I have a pack of skittles?

omg i totally forgot to say, yesterday on a curb along 5th ave i found two HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE bags of superhero action figures lol. im not a collector or these and i think superheroes are stupid and lame, but i took them anyway. there's at least 300 of them! some really old some really new. what can i do with them? i know they arent worth much if they arent in the original boxes, but i dont know whawt to do with them. i was thinking about making a mural with them or something like that, or leaving them on trains all around the city. anyway, i wonder why the original owner threw them out. actually it had to be an adult cuz next to it were a bunch of geeky astronomy books hahaha.

stick them on ebay or craigslist as a lucky dip.
Someone will want to snag them in case there's a super-valuable one in there.

Ok, I'm back, catch me up please! What have I missed? Any big news? OT is still here! Did Mr. B ever 'make a statement' after digesting the comments on comments?
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 6, 2009 11:49 AM
welcome back cobblehiller. No statement from mr b regarding comments. Don't think he ever intended to scrap the OT.
Posted by: wasder at April 6, 2009 11:55 AM
Hi wasder, thanks! That was a little joke about the OT, I didn't really think he was going to trash it. Have you announced your show yet?
Happy Easter and Passover to everyone! : )

there is no such thing as Happy Passover when you have to eat matzoh for what seems like days on end :-). I remember desperately craving one slice of white bread by the time it was over. Desperately!
Posted by: bxgrl at April 6, 2009 12:02 PM
Wow, why so few comments today??
I'm in a happy mood today, as I had a great party over the weekend in my place. I hosted a reunion of my college buddies on the ocassion of the 30th anniversary of our graduation. It was so great to see my old friends. We picked up right where we left off.
Posted by: benson at April 6, 2009 12:06 PM
The show is going to be May 21st but I will do a more formal announcement thing once the gallery actually sends out the invites...
Posted by: wasder at April 6, 2009 12:06 PM
ok, ok, bxgrl, point taken! I don't do lent, so I don't really have that 'depravation' thing. But I did miss Brownstoner on the trip!
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 6, 2009 12:07 PM
bxgrl...convert to Catholicism. All you have to do is refrain from meat on fridays in Lent, and I rarely ever do anyway.
You can't eat bread on Thursday???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 12:07 PM
Ah, yes, that makes sense wasder. Looking forward to it!

I worship at your feet, o great chicken
(dave- I'm not that religious actually. I toss matzoh to the wind)

cobble- even worse- chocolate covered matzoh. Ewwwww.
dave- yesterday at an interfaith (yes, I know) Palm Sunday celebration I was the only one who knew how to make crosses out of palm fronds. I was very disappointed in our FDNY and NYPD Irish and Italian catholic brethren. :-)

bxgrl, I like plain matzoh with butter and a little salt sprinkled on it. Kinda tasty.
Hi Snappy!
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 6, 2009 12:19 PM
Rob,
google "donate toys, Brooklyn". and get a list of the many organizations that help kids in the boro. I think donating your found toys is the right thing to do.
There are so many poor kids in Brooklyn.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 12:21 PM
DIBS -- bxgrl's right, it's a whole week of "the Passover diet."
bxgrl -- I got sick of the matzoh one year and used Passover as a springboard for low-carb weight loss. Worked great then (I eventually gained it back, unfortunately). Otherwise, make yourself some nice, sweet matzoh brei and smother it with butter and maple syrup. that will cure your white bread cravings for a few days.
And yes, DIBS, I just heard about that sun thing being Wednesday. Happy birth of the world everyone.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 6, 2009 12:21 PM
Hi Cobble. How was your time away? Anything fun and exciting to make us all jealous?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 6, 2009 12:21 PM
I confess- once in awhile, yes. I like it with butter and salt.
Welcome back by the way! And you too snappy. Did either of you read the Fort Greene transformation article. I thought it was beautifully written and heartfelt.

Hi Snappy.
Does not the leader of another major religion ask his followers to "eat of my flesh"? ;)
Let's face it - hot wings v bread is not really a contest.
Posted by: the chicken at April 6, 2009 12:24 PM
I didn't read the Ft. Greene thing. I don't know alot (or anything really) about the history of that area so I can't add anything to that discussion.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at April 6, 2009 12:24 PM
omig-d- matzoh brei...my mom used to make the greatest. Crap- now to go out and find a box of matzoh to make it. That I could eat all year round.
Posted by: bxgrl at April 6, 2009 12:24 PM
I love chicken liver sandwiches but the only places that you can find nowadays that make them are in the diamond district which, fortunately, is close to my office.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 12:25 PM
are you saying you're hot, chicken?
Posted by: bxgrl at April 6, 2009 12:26 PM
snappy- its actually about how neighborhoods age and change, not really about Ft. Greene. Take a look anyway if you get a chance.
Posted by: bxgrl at April 6, 2009 12:27 PM
It was great Snappy, nice to have a change of scenery. I was out west in New Mexico with my aunt, saw some museums and beautiful countryside!

Where are Biff & the What today???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 1:12 PM
cobble,
Make matzoh brei like french toast. To start, just break the matzoh into little squares, put the pieces into a collander, and pour boiling water over them to soften them up. Then dump the softened matzoh pieces into a bowl with eggs (and milk, cinnamon, vanilla extract, whatever is your fancy), just like you would bread for french toast. The whole mixture goes in the pan. Use one egg for each matzoh.

truly snappy- all of a sudden last week he's been going after me for no reason. Now he called me homophobic for responding to a post someone else wrote, and I only said I would be looking at that poster hoping, as a straight woman, he was straight. And that was in direct response to what he wrote. He was being humorous, so was I. Rob wasn't. He was being an ass and I don't like it.

Posted by: slopefarm at April 6, 2009 1:25 PM
slopefarm- that's actually a differnt recipe than my mother used to make. Yours is a sweeter version- my mom's used just egg, milk or water, and salt. She also used less egg per piece. I have to try yours.

The funniest stories of dispensations occured a few years Ago when St. Patrick's Day fell on a Friday in Lent and there were all these dispensations being given out to eat meat. With many of them however, the dispensation was only valid if you performed certain indulgences AND only in your own diocese. So if you were in a diocese in Iowa and went to the St. Patricks Day parade in NYC, the dispensation was null and void. It was all rather funny and absurd.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 1:55 PM
Why aren't we supposed to eat meat on Friday's during Lent?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 6, 2009 2:05 PM
Because the Church tells you not to.

"If you would eat french toast for dinner, you can go ahead with this too."
I love 'breakfast for dinner' nights. We do it every couple of weeks. Bacon and eggs. Pierogies and eggs and sausages. It's fun, and yummy. Now we can add matzoh brei to the mix!
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 6, 2009 2:11 PM
I still think you're all spelling it wrong and a little brie schmear on a matzoh would be better.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 2:13 PM

What's a traditional Easter meal?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 6, 2009 2:20 PM
Hi Everyone -
i had to take a break from this site on Friday - it really got to me - all the fighting on every thread
BRG - I think a trad Easter meal usually involves Ham - my mom made a ham with a curry peach and pineapple gravy that was delish!
Posted by: gemini10 at April 6, 2009 2:23 PM
bx -- you can take it in a savory direction, too, and treat it like a matzoh omelette. You can also keep it neutral (pinch of salt) and just top it however you want or eat it plain. I am not a huge traditionalist on this, but the underlying recipe is always the same -- soften the matzoh pieces with boiling water, mix with egg, fry.
Try DIBS's "matzoh brie" at your own risk.
Posted by: slopefarm at April 6, 2009 2:24 PM
Ham. But nothing cast in stone like Thanksgiving.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 2:24 PM
Sam - are you a brit?
Posted by: gemini10 at April 6, 2009 2:27 PM
I've done both ham and lamb. I don't like the mint jelly.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 2:29 PM
I grew up Christian and we NEVER had ham, ever. My mother hated it and never made it.
We usually have lamb.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 6, 2009 2:34 PM
I'm with Sam: Lamb for dinner.
In my mom's house though, we went with lasagna.
My mom is such a good cook (don't tell my wife I said that).
When I was in high school, my mom used to make eggplant parmigiana sandwiches for me. For some reason, I don't like EP. Fear not, however, the food did not go to waste. My mom's EP was so famous, I used to auction them off to others at school.
Posted by: benson at April 6, 2009 2:34 PM
I don't like mint jelly either, but that is neither here nor there, it's TRADITION!
A nice rasted leg o'mutton with a side of mashed potatoes and carrots, and of course, mint jelly, is the traditional easter sunday repast chez moi.
Posted by: sam at April 6, 2009 2:36 PM
Well, I'm cooking ham this year.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2009 2:36 PM
What the heck is mint jelly?
Our table on Easter will have ethnic food on it....just like Thanksgiving.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 6, 2009 2:37 PM
We always had leg of lamb with mint jelly - not mint sauce!
Recently, BH told me that he grew up with mint sauce - a vinegary mint leaf thing. We did a taste test with lamb chops. Mint sauce - pretty good! Mint jelly - seemed to overwhelm.

It is sweetened, bright green aspic with a slight minty aroma.

" Mr.B defending his position on why he likes to include Horror Show Fridays"
I'm dismayed by Mr. B's comment there. Did he read the comments everyone left two weeks ago? What does he mean by 'What are you talking about?'. It's been a subject for quite awhile. Has he ever addressed that thread and the comments received?
Posted by: cobblehiller at April 6, 2009 3:49 PM
Sam;
I'll agree with your Mother's Day recommendation except for one thing: going out for dinner. We've tried that a couple of times, and always regretted it. INHO, Mother's Day is the single worst day to go to a restaurant. They are always crowded and under-staffed. Once we had to wait two hours for the food to come out.
Nowadays I order food in from a caterer. You need to place your order about a week ahead of time.
Posted by: benson at April 6, 2009 3:51 PM
oh no- please. It was rancorous enough. We had several very different viewpoints on horror show friday- all more or less with leigitimate points to make.
Posted by: bxgrl at April 6, 2009 3:53 PM
THL, your menu sounds similar to mine. Except you're calling the dishes by different names than I do ;-)
Is that the bread that's braided with a colored egg in the middle? My mother used to make it. Please send me some, it's delish. I haven't had it in years. My mother is getting older and can't do much anymore. I have to do all the cooking while she guides me, and I'm not the best cook.
My Mom and I are deciding now what to make for Easter. Definetely lamb. And veggie grape leaves. I'll be spending all day Saturday making them. Not sure what else yet.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at April 6, 2009 3:53 PM
bxgrl, I'm not trying to stir up the debate again. I'm just curious to know if Mr. B ever addressed that thread the way he said he would.

Re: Choereg, It's slightly sweet, long braided loaf. It's made with ground Mahleb seeds that give it that amazing fragrance. The closets thing I can compare Mahleb seeds with is that of almond. We don't do the egg although I've heard most other similar ethnic breads do have an egg included.
Here's a link to a recipe that seems to be just like the one we use (I'm not looking to dig mine out).

Yes, the bread is similar to one we make except we hard boil eggs, kids color the eggs and then we'd braid the bread and put the coloroed eggs in the middle as decoration, or we braid the bread in a circle around the painted eggs.

Yes, ultimately it has to be a personal thing, and everyone has their own path.
For me, it's more about a relationship than a set of rules. I don't think God loves individuals any more or any less depending on whether they go to Church or not (or whether they are gay or not etc for that matter)

Rob, may I recommend Grand Sichuan on 2nd Ave. between 54th and 55th? Very authentic Sichuan food with special peppercorns and very little in the way of sauce. My two favorite dishes are "fresh sliced pork," which is a giant mound of pork belly with spicy hot peppers, and "fresh chicken with chinese broccoli," which is shredded chicken with green peppers (not spicy) and lots of Sichuan peppercorns, which make your mouth numb.
They have brown rice and they serve wine and beer. It's kind of pricey for one but very reasonable for two or more.
There are other Grand Sichuans in New York but they're not as good.

"Look what happing around our country Here come the shooting and it's just the begining! People are losing their Jobs and looking for someone to blame! Only retards in New York care about Real Estate, everyone else is trying to put food on the table. The collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble is very devestaing to America and remember what I said about the "Goose Steppers" taking the sheets off, don't laugh,America is in very bad shape...

I don't disagree with you What. There is a lot of pain out there right now. I'm not laughing.

mopar....that's the restaurant i was recommending..yes, excellent. And for great Shanghainese, there's one on 55th just east of Lexington called Our Place...also John's on 46th between 6th & 7th
Song Dynasty (S' Dynasty) on 48th at Lex is very good too...inside one of the hotels

The Chicken: yes, at PdT! I was sitting with a friend on the other side by the windows.
Etson: completely agree. Another reason why I can't stand the so-called "religious right" (except for Huckabee, who at least has a sense of humor).
bxgrl: thanks, will try it!

Chicken Jr was in naughty mode so took most of my attention but give me a slap around the chops if you see me in the nabe again.
Have to say that PdT food is nice but overpriced for the area, and my steak came out the size of a hotdog.
