Nominate Your Favorite Restaurants

We've been highlighting a Restaurant of the Day every weekday since last summer, and we've really appreciated all the reviews you've shared. Now, we're nearing our 200th write-up, but we've still got a ton of places to cover. If you've got a favorite Brooklyn restaurant that we haven't mentioned yet, please let us know in the comments. (Little neighborhood spots and holes-in-the-wall are welcome we'd like to cover all of the borough's quality mom-and-pop shops that citywide publications may have overlooked.)

Cheryl's Global Soul has by far the best pancakes I've ever had. Everything is amazing there, but the pancakes are something else. It's on Underhill Ave in Prospect Heights.

Bridget on Broadway. (Williamsburg)
Posted by: king of the burg at April 13, 2009 11:52 AM
I'll rep my neck of the woods as I'm sure everyone else will have ample input for brownstone brooklyn:
Walter Foods - Grand Street in Williamsburg. Finally checked it out this weekend for the first time. Amazing!
Five Leaves - The Heath Ledger joint on Bedford Avenue in Greenpoint
Northeast Kingdom - Wyckoff and Starr out in Bushwick.
Sea Thai Bistro - North 6th. I hate this place but it seems to be a destination for lots of people.
Did Peter Luger's ever get covered? What about Diner on Broadway?
There's also a new place on South 1st called Rye - opened up by some Dressler dudes. Might be good to feature in the future.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 13, 2009 11:55 AM
Oh - and could we potentially get a "bar of the day" feature in the near future? That would certainly be fun!!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 13, 2009 11:57 AM
Some of these might be done - Chesnut; Good Fork; Apartment 138; Jack the Horse; Henry's End; Five Front; Ignazio's (new, 4 water, great pizza); Vinegar Hill House; Stone Home; Smoke; Cornelius; Beast; Tavern on Nostrand; Tavern on Dean; Brooklyn Fish Camp; Paninoteca 247; Fragole

Chiles y chocolat on 7th Ave in the north slope has THE BEST enchiladas anywhere.

Shoots:
Kara asked for suggestions - I actually like the Usual as diner fare goes - the guys in there are super nice and know everyone and they serve it quick and tasty
it's a diner that's actually good- what do you expect
There are diners all over that a bad so if Brownstoner can at least point people in the direction to a good diner, am all for it!

I'm into your bar-of-the-day idea (or at least a bar-of-the-week post), but I've got to take that up with the boss!

Dirty Hipster, what did you have at Walter Foods? Was it good? I had lobster and fried chicken, all very good.
Also, curious: So does this mean people from Williamsburg come all the way out to NEK? We are there twice a week but we also frequently eat out in Williamsburg.
Posted by: mopar at April 13, 2009 12:36 PM
bristen's on franklin
Posted by: sweet tea at April 13, 2009 12:36 PM
Abistro on Carlton in Fort Greene.
Posted by: East New York at April 13, 2009 12:37 PM
At Walter Foods I had a dozen oysters on the half shell, the bass and my date had the lobster. Then I drank no less then 5 properly made sazerac cocktails.
All very, very good. I'm always skeptical when it comes to places in our neighborhood as i feel the food quite often comes secondary to the "scene", but walter foods really blew me away.
I have friends out on the Dekalb L stop in "ridgewick" and frequently go out to NEK on sundays for brunch. we usually sit there from noon to 5pm when they close out the brunch tabs, then head over to the wreck room for some evening drinking. NEK is really, really good. Love the baked eggs.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 13, 2009 12:43 PM
Are we just naming restaurants that exist in our neighborhood now? Not to be Mr. Negative about other people's posts, but Mitchell's was very disappointing. I went there when it first opened. They have an amazing space, but the service was slow and the burger I got tasted like deli burger. You know, the stuff that sits in the front of the store with the cold cuts and is drenched in some special sauce?
There should also be a most disappoiting restaurant of the week post. j/k
For the most part, all of the restaurants that I've been to that have been listed are excellent.
Posted by: Shoots and Leaves at April 13, 2009 12:45 PM
"Are we just naming restaurants that exist in our neighborhood now"
Well I think people are typically more familiar with restaurants in their own neighborhoods
And for the restaurant review section to be useful, I think a collection of well known good and bad restaurants are necessary. Many of the places I listed are very popular but the food is substandard. Seeing the review of a crappy, overhyped restaurant on brownstoner may save someone from williamsburg a trip to park slope, or vice versa.

Pom de Terre - Ditmas
The Farm On Adderly - Ditmas
Enduro & the fabulous K-dog - PLG

I love Boca Lupo; I was just thinking about it yesterday.
By me, how about Enduro's and/or Whiskey Sunday's (if you haven't done them yet)?
But for good diner comfort food and the sweetest waitresses ever I'd recomment Toomey's on Empire Blvd. and Rogers. Also extremely kid-friendly!
Ali's Roti on Flatbush and Hammond's Jek Chicken on Nostrand at Sterling. Also Culpepper's has been getting a lot of press lately (see Hawthorne St. blog).
An maybe a discussion of the whole Sushi Tatsu empire (Prospect Heights/Crown Heights (Dean & Franklin)/PLG). Thier food is OK; I just wish they'd get rid of the big screen TVs over the sushi bar -- they have them in all three restaurants and the personnel seem to watch only the Food Channel. If I wanted to watch TV while I eat I'd stay home (which is why I usually get take-out or delivery from them).
Posted by: babs at April 13, 2009 1:03 PM
Just to clarify for "Shoots and Leaves", I meant Mitchell's Fish and Chips (http://www.yelp.com/biz/mitchell-fish-and-chips-brooklyn), which is a hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant with great fried chicken. I assume you meant the Mitchell's on Flatbush?
Posted by: coho at April 13, 2009 1:05 PM
Or maybe just a whole Jim Mamary sequence -- that would cover Enduro's, Whiskey Sunday, Pomme de Terre, and, by extension Farm on Adderly (the owners are partners with Jim in PdT), not to mention whatever he's got left on Smith St.
Have you already done Havana Outpost? It's re-opening for the season soon!

Organic Heights on Bergen.
Posted by: babs at April 13, 2009 1:10 PM
might we consider Gowanus Yacht Club a restaurant?
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 13, 2009 1:12 PM
I think Cocotte closed in Park Slope, right?
Babs - they did Ali's! - it was a good review
I'd like to see a review on Culpeppers done though!!!
Posted by: gemini10 at April 13, 2009 1:21 PM
Isn't that one of Jim's as well?

Koto Steak and Sushi on Henry. Much better than most sushi in the nabe and they could use more business. Bedouin Tent on Atlantic. I second Cheryl's Global Soul.
Posted by: Carol Gardens at April 13, 2009 1:51 PM
For Thai, check out Lily Thai on Grand St! Authentic food and really fair prices. It's one of my local favorites! Also, if you're over there, Wombat (australian) next door is pretty cool ... really unique menu and nice decor.
Posted by: Briana at April 13, 2009 2:01 PM
Conviviam Osteria - 5th & St Marks. Great stuff if you can get a table.
12th street bar and Grill - 12th & 8th. Steady fare..
Neuvo Tacco - off the charts mexican. None of this tex mex covered in cheese cr@p ! 13th & 5th
if you were to open best bar category then "the gate" on 5th & 3rd in Park Slope has no equal. They had barrell tasting this weekend - awesome.
A Di la & Applewood but then you knew them...

EuroTrip - 5th avenue between 19th and 20th streets. Incredible food, bar, and pricing!

Gannett the Ethiopian restaurant on 4th Ave and douglas
Posted by: oohlala at April 13, 2009 2:38 PM
Lily Thai on Grand http://www.lilythairestaurant.com/ is the best Thai food in Williamsburg. Really. We have made a point to try almost every place within deliverable distance in the burg and this place wins. Favorites: Mango sticky rice dessert is now in-season and blows our mind, as well as the Penang curry and pad thai.
It has gotten to the point where my husband has to pull an intervention... as in, "no we can't order Lily Thai every night."

have you done Aurora on grand street? so good they then opened in Soho.

Bratwa woulod be good, The fod is awesome but service and delivery highly questionable, I'd be interested to hear what experience other people have had..
Posted by: lifer at April 13, 2009 3:25 PM
Ha, Ridgewick, dirty hipster, that's where I live too. Great spot.
I think on the whole the food in Williamsburg tends to be better than other areas of NYC - for the money, I mean.
Posted by: mopar at April 13, 2009 3:30 PM
Bar of the Day would be a great feature.
Posted by: BklynJace at April 13, 2009 4:03 PM
I totally agree Mopar. People from other neighborhoods in Brooklyn/Manhattan have this propensity to despise anything in Williamsburg, but I will defend the restaurant scene to the death. It's only going to get better - several owners of interesting restaurants/bars in Manhattan are planning on opening spots in Williamsburg - as rents are WAAAY cheaper then in the LES/EV and they can still charge prices high enough to command a good profit (Walter Foods is a good example of this)
Posted by: dirty_hipster at April 13, 2009 4:09 PM
Babakanoush (sp?) at Sahadi's is fantastic.
Anything at Sahadi's back prepared foods area is amazing and inexpensive.

Viva in Red Hook. Great Mexican food in a city that should have plenty of it, and doesn't.
Posted by: pclem at April 13, 2009 5:49 PM
Best damn Slovakian restaurant in the city!

Milan in "South Slope" or whatever. Amazing!
Posted by: ftgreenepark at April 13, 2009 7:13 PM
How about Sidecar, on 5th Avenue and 15th (I think). The owners took great care with the reno and turn out consistently good bar food and well-mixed cocktails.
It would be great to have a lot of reviews of West Indian restaurants (besides Brawta).
I second the vote for Milan's, too.
Did you do Get Fresh NYC already? Love them...
