Mixed Bag on Quincy Street

quincy-street-040809.jpg
Yesterday Bed-Stuy Blog put together an interesting post about the architectural diversity of Quincy Street between Bedford and Nostrand.

While most blocks in Bed-Stuy contain rows of brownstones, occasionally interrupted by new construction or vacant lots, Quincy Street between Bedford and Nostrand is different. The housing stock on this stretch of Quincy features several examples of detached and semi-detached Victorian houses that look like they migrated north from Kensington or Ditmas Park. Unfortunately, few of these homes have survived intact into the 21st century. But with a little imagination, you can look beneath the siding and additions to see what used to be.

We'd never noticed the turret lurking in the background of the photo in the lower left, providing a clue to the house's Victorian roots. More photos on the link.

I've always thought this was an interesting block, too. Although I haven't been down it in so long, some of those Fedders infill houses are new to me. The architectural variety shows how the neighborhood developed, first the frame houses, then the brick and then the brownstones filling up the lots, as Brooklyn grew around the entire area.

Cool blog post.

Like a time machine walking down this street. I just have the almost uncontrollable urge to run down there with a chisel and hammer and yank all that aluminum siding off. It would be like a treasure hunt.

You read my mind, bxgrl. I just want to start ripping things down to get back to the original building.

You are on! I'll bring the work gloves and tools of destruction. I am good at that. Not so good at the reconstruction though.

This is gumbo of architectural styles has always made this block interesting. Every time I see siding on a old building which we have plenty in the north end of the neighborhood. I just want to strip it off. Hey good wine and cheese and I am there
