Lost City's Guide to Boerum Hill

lost-city-040609.jpgLost City just published a neighborhood guide to Boerum Hill, the eighth one its done in New York and the third in Brooklyn. (The first two were for Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill.) Must-see spots include the Ex-Lax Building, Hank's Saloon and this tiled-and-sequined piece of outsider art above the doorway at 108 Wyckoff Street. And if you're a Jonathan Lethem fan, check out at Ziad's Deli on Smith—it was the inspiration for Zeod's in Motherless Brooklyn.

I love Hank's. I'll be bummed when it becomes a bank or a Sleepys, or some shit like that.
And, as far as bodegas go, Ziad's is damn fine.

Another Motherless Brooklyn landmark is the weird, skinny building on Bergen where the protagonist lived. It used to be a car service, just like in the book, and is now (sigh) a real estate office. Before I read the book I used to wonder what it would be like to live in the obviously unattractive and cramped space above.
