Fort Greene Panel Discussion at BPL on Tuesday
We're honored to be included in a panel discussion taking place at the Brooklyn Public Library on Tuesday night. The topic: Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Past & Present. Hosted by The Local's Andy Newman, the panel features neighborhood old-timers DK Holland, Nelson George and Carl Hancock Rux. And us. Expect lots of cool stories from the past as well as thoughtful reflections on the phenomenon of change. The event starts at 7 pm and is free but seating is limited to 175 people.

Hey What, you've read Rux' 'Asphalt', right?
Posted by: denton at April 24, 2009 11:16 AM
I'm sure you have the balls to show up and say that to Nelson's face.

"I'm sure you have the balls to show up and say that to Nelson's face."
I know George Nelson and would understand where I'm coming from..
"Hey What, you've read Rux' 'Asphalt', right?"
Carl Hancock Rux: Asphalt. I just google'd it. I never heard of this book before maybe I will read it. Thanks!
The What ("reflections on the phenomenon of change", my ass!)

Good morning, What.

Maybe they should invite Lance Freeman to be on the panel too. He wrote a book about gentrification in Clinton Hill and Harlem based on interviews with more than 100 residents. He is African American, grew up in Harlem, and is a professor of architecture at Columbia. I don't know if he lives in Clinton Hill.

"I know George Nelson"...says What. Yes, they are old buddies, with this "in joke" where What transposes his first and last names just to rib the brother.

"We"? Please stop using the bloguitorial "we". It makes 20- and 30-somethings sound like they're royalty: "WE were biking today...", "We think that..." Don't be allergic to "I". Does using "we" somehow protect you legally behind a corporate facade? If not, please use "I" once in a while.
I'm on a style-bender today if you haven't noticed.
Please correct the other "Today we here from..." on the kitchen entry.
Kids, please get your writing skills together.
Thanks!

"Kids, please get your writing skills together."
Wow. I thought six years and I were the only ones around here who cared about writing well.

Sorry to disappoint but we're not going to change gears on that one 4 1/2 years into this gig!
Posted by: brownstoner at April 24, 2009 12:53 PM
Well, "we" will keep bringing it up because sometimes your use of "we" sounds very awkward...sometimes not. Its constant use will generally not win you friends.
Do what you will.
If you show up with an identical twin, "we"'ll leave you alone on this in future!
;-)

I had a very disturbing experience at the BPL today. I will post it on the OT.

Oh c'mon. "We" means Brownstoner as opposed to Jon. Though I suppose it is Jon who is speaking on the panel.
Posted by: mopar at April 24, 2009 2:55 PM
I like the "we" usage; it is appropriate for the entity "Brownstoner."
He's not talking about himself all the time on this blog, people.

I only go after inexcusably bad grammar and punctuation, a la sebb, the what, and my students. There's a certain aristocratic style to the royal we.

How ridiculous. A panel is being offered on the history and present of a neighborhood and you would think it was a presidential election. What's the debate? That the "wrong" person has been invited and will say the "wrong" thing? GASP!!! That the "right" person wasn't invited to say the "right" thing. EGADS!!! Come one people, GET OVER IT! Should we check their political affiliations, US residency status, tax debt, property ownership, sexual preference and cv before the panel commences? Nelson George has a very impressive bio. So does Rux. I'm sure the other panelists do as well. Looking forward to it.
