Bicycle-Friendly Update to Zoning Code Passes Council

Good news for bikers: On Wednesday, the City Council approved a text amendment to the zoning code that requires new buildings—residential and commercial—to include secure bike parking areas. Transportation Alternatives estimates that if all office buildings had bike parking that two-wheeled commuting would rise as much as 50 percent. Zoning details here.

Good news! Though my friend's bike got stolen outside our office building on a busy street with a security guard less than 20 feet away and tons of surveillance cameras around. 65,000 bikes are reported stolen per year in NYC alone! The irony is that my Kryptonite super mega NYC lock is so dang heavy I end up not bringing the thing out with me most days (I leave my bike under a desk at work). Hmmm, no point to this comment.

Unfortunately for TA and cyclists, there won't be many office buildings built for a while.

Seems like a good idea. When I commuted by bicycle to lower Manhattan the building management let me bring my bike upstairs, in the freight elevator, and my employer let me stash it in a corner of the office. I was lucky; most people don't have such accommodating work places, which must be a strong deterrent to cycling to work.

yeah we can't store our bikes at work, which is fine. i cant fathom biking from park slope to soho anyway. plus it's a given i'd get into an accident or run someone over. so it's best im off the roads in all capacities for the good of the people. ill stick to being a subway rat.

Or, you could use your kryptonite lock, the key breaks on a cold day, and your bike sits to this day locked to a sign on 17th street....

Next step: emulating the Kasai Bicycle Garage- a bike garage in one of Japan's largest metro stations and can hold thousands of bikes!! You can pay per hour/day/or month (I think month rent is equivalent to US$18). Pretty amazing.

This is a great idea. I happen to be able to bike in to work in lower Manhattan because I am near a public building with racks outside. Forcing private builders to inclde racks in new construction will make a difference.
