Turf's Down at Slope Park

jjbyrne-field-03-2009.JPG
Parks Dept. workers have been busy revamping a large section of the Slope's Washington Park (formerly J.J. Byrne) that, when all's said and done, will have a large artificial turf field. Although a lot of the turf has been laid, the field isn't scheduled to be complete until September. As of right now, a ribbon cutting is scheduled for late August, and a ball game to inaugurate the space is planned for September 13th. The new field is part of a long-term plan to renovate much of the park.

Why did JJ Byrne get the boot? (And is it *George* Washington?)

I know that real grass is difficult and expensive to maintain, but I can't help but be depressed when they lay down artificial turn. I mean aren't we trying to "green" the city?

I live near PS 38 Park, and artificial turf is great. It never has bald spots, it is dry a few hours after rain, and it's great for sports. Even though it is obviously fake, being in and near "grass" is deeply calming.

I'm so pleased this moved forward and didn't get the budget axe. The dog run, handball courts, skate park and new bball courts are getting great use. I might be a bit bummed if I had a NOVO apartment in the rear of the building where I could hear all the noise but it's a great addition to the community.

We don't want the precious children of Park Slope to skin their knees in a playground. That would be tragic.

egghead or d*ckhead ... you be the judge.

Ordinarily, I would agree with WTguy, but parks has tried for years to keep the small grass patch green. It is too small and gets too overused (soccer, wiffleball, frisbee) to stay green more than a few weeks at a time. This is an upgrade from dirt and mud to astroturf. And no, this is not about skinned knees, egghead. This is about having some semblance of a small playing field where it will be most welcomed and used, and a long term savings on expense and effort.

What's the score on NOVO?

The artificial turf is in the part of the park that was an asphalt field for years and years ... much before you Ohio transplants came here.
