Streetlevel: New Veterinarian for Fulton Street

This new signage for a soon-to-open veterinary clinic called Brooklyn Cares at 944 Fulton Street between St. James and Cambridge popped up at the end of last week. The clinic, which will specialize in holistic medicine for small animals (in addition to doing all the standard vet stuff), is slated to open on April 1. The website's not live yet but you can reach them by calling 718-783-5500 or by emailing tim@brooklyncaresvet.com. It's really great to see a new business (and peppy signage) in this heretofore forlorn stretch of Fulton Street. Good luck to them! GMAP

There was also a message on the electronic sign above Pintchik's hardware store today that announced that new vet's office would be coming to one of their spaces on Bergen Street. Looks like veterinery clinics are recession proof?

My vet said 6 months ago that she was noticing a slowdown. Sadly, I think routine medical care for pets is exactly the type of thing to go out the window first.

Just what we needed-- something really practical like holistic medicine for small animals!

Bunch of haters...Give this guy a chance. I think he sounds very thoughtful.

And Rob? No where near where you live.

"holistic medicine for small animals"
Sometimes its like people want to fail.
Posted by: eh at March 19, 2009 2:47 PM
Sorry Frantic to be negative. It just struck me as ironic and funny that when we are all hoping for some new practical retail this is what crops up on Fulton. Got nothing against holistic pet medicine...
Posted by: wasder at March 19, 2009 2:48 PM
Good luck to them, I wish them success.
You know what would make an absolute killing on this stretch, a greengrocer with good fruits and vegetables, something like the place a door or two down from Sahadi's on Atlantic Avenue. Nothing fancy required, just lots of fresh fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices, with maybe some cut flowers for sale out front.

there you go...practical, useful retail. Good call 1842.

Just to clarify, my vet in north brooklyn also specializes in holistic medicine for small animals and it doesn't mean that is all they will do. They will also do standard western medicine as well if it is warranted and regular run of the mill checkups. And small pets would certainly include dogs. I think it's great--we need more vets (and doctors for people for that matter) that are willing to look at wellness as a whole and not just treat everything with antibiotics.
In fact, a Tim recently left my vet's office so I wonder if this is him setting up his own shop--that would be great!
Posted by: denouement at March 19, 2009 3:05 PM
Just to clarify, this vet practice will do all the normal stuff but will offer some more alternative approaches for those pet owners who are interested in that kind of thing.
Posted by: brownstoner at March 19, 2009 3:09 PM
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the new vet business, and wish them much success.
I do agree with wasder, however, that there are some basic services that everyone in the area could use, the greengrocer being one. I'm still hoping the nascent Ft. Greene Clinton Hill Food Coop chooses a Fulton Street location.

I don't get what the problem is. I have 8 pets and I'm pretty happy with my current vet because he practices both holistic and traditional medicine. This is something I would specifically seek out and I know I'm not the only one.
Posted by: rh at March 19, 2009 3:23 PM
No problem rh. I also wish them luck and love pets. It just clarifies for me what more basic amenities we need on Fulton.
Posted by: wasder at March 19, 2009 3:26 PM
say what you will, but this side of fulton is more likely to have pit bulls that end up in the shelters when the owners tire of them.
Posted by: goldie at March 19, 2009 3:27 PM
It wasn't just you, wasder. I would love to see more restaurants, grocers, etc, but people do use holistic vets. And Goldie, yeah, even people with Pitbulls.

Finally, a thread where we can talk about cats! [Sorry, going back to the OT now...]
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 3:50 PM
okay i completely confused holistic with spiritual / psychic healing. nevermind! lol. soo... where is there a good vet in park slope where i can take a pitbull? he's not a huuuge pitbull or anything. i live right near the cat clinic and that supposedly takes small dogs but i dont want to bring my dog in there. his regular vet is in chelsea and i dont want to have to take a pet taxi to and from bk to get there. plus my vet in chelsea was a major snob and i got bad vibes from her.
anyway, best of luck to the new vet place!

rob- aren't you near Animal Kind on 7th Ave and (I think) around 11th St. they are very nice. They take all animals (maybe even gerbils).
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:23 PM
Rob, Silverman @ Prospect Park Animal Clinic.
Posted by: rh at March 19, 2009 4:28 PM
Park Slope Veterinary Care on 5th Ave between (i think) 8th and 9th. Dr. Maddon was a genius with my 15 year old, cranky at best, thinks vet visits are cat torture up there with waterboarding cat.
Posted by: mscrochety at March 19, 2009 4:34 PM
PS: I second Dr. Maddon as well. He used to work at PPAC and broke off to open his own practice. Both he and Silverman dealt with my Pit, no problem.
Posted by: rh at March 19, 2009 5:11 PM
A third endorsement of Dr.Maddon here. I've used him when he worked for Dr. Silverman and after he opened his own practice.

If this is the Dr. Tim from Williamsburg...All I can say is BEWARE! Young, cocky and in-experienced! Missed diagnosed my baby and we ended up at emergency in NY. I was so dissapointed in my veterinarian for hiring him that I wasn't going back! At least this means I can safely return to our Williamsburg vet. Try him if you want? But I did my good deed this week by warning you.

I'm so excited that there are new businesses opening on Fulton. I love watching this neighborhood change! I know that with good coffee at Outpost, great french and vegetarian food nearby, a health food store, wine shop and an open minded vet in the neighborhood that only good things will come to this section of clinton hill. for all you naysayers, why don't you just try this new clinic and see for yourselves before bashing something before it even opens?

Oh my God. Run Run Run like the wind. This is the Tim Mann from Northside. This guy is a real piece of work, a real cocky jerk. I wasn't sure at first if it was him at this new vet office but I know now (he introduces himself in a caption above) what a shame. If anyone needs or wants traditional or complimentary medicine for there pets then just go see Dr. Danny Leiman and his wife. They are not just out of school and sure wont pretend to know whats wrong. This Mann guy almost killed my pet and I ended up at NYC emergency. Shame Shame. Stem cell therapy? Doesnt that takes years to learn? Phony. Makes me want to move off the block!!!
