Streetlevel: Garry's Moves Up the Block

80-Saint-Marks-Avenue-0309.jpg
Garry's Wine & Liquor, whose presence at 234 Flatbush Avenue predates the latest wave of gentrification in Park Slope, is relocating up the block to 80 Saint Marks Avenue, right next door to Flatbush Farm. Whether this new location will retain the no-frills vibe of the old location or go more upscale remains to be seen. GMAP

Also of note...the former Nouveu Decor (sp?) place up a little farther on Flatbush that was highlighted here the other day has a new awning up....it says Fortune House.

From a google search, it would seem it's a chinese place...there's one in Brooklyn Heights...

Also....two storefronts on 7th Avenue have been filled in the last week or so...neither of which are thrilling.

The former Diane Kane space on 7th between Berkeley and Union is becoming a Green Apple Cleaners to open on April 1st (www.greenapplecleaners.com) and the former tiny Loom spot on 7th between Union and President has become another wireless accessories store. It's the small sliver of a storefront next to Sprint.

The larger Loom space remains a couple doors down, if I'm not mistaken.

i don't know if it's going to be no-frills, but there's a ginormous, flashy (and, respectfully, kinda fug) sign up now. i'll try to snap a pic on my way home.

Good luck to Green Apple cleaners. They'll be about 2 doors down from another cleaners, Brooklyn Valet, which is now my new go-to cleaners since a) they speak english and b) are very friendly every time I've gone in.

I like Brooklyn Valet, too. They are super nice. Oddly, there is yet another dryer cleaner on Berkeley just off 7th (btw 7th and 8th). Seems like a lot of dry cleaners for one little area.

Goldie,

Not to mention Plaza cleaners is directly across the street next to Roma Pizza and you can see GR's cleaners (my go to cleaners...LOVE them!), which is on Berkeley right behind Mr. Wonton.

4 cleaners in one block. Ridiculous.

Posted by: 11217 at March 27, 2009 2:34 PM

agreed, a lot of cleaners, and i always wonder if they're all doing well. i mean does everyone in p.s. send all their clothing to the cleaners?!

oh! glad this topic came up, it JUST reminded me i need to pick up my suit from them right now! yikes, a week late!

if youre around, im the ridiculously good looking person about to walk in there.

i kid

I won't be back in the hood for a few more hours. I'll have to stalk ya later. ;-)

I wish them luck the people who run it are very nice!

Posted by: Pragonetti at March 27, 2009 2:54 PM

Yes, Pragonetti, I hear very good things about Green Apple Cleaners, actually. They have some impressive accolades on their website.

I just question their judgment in opening a dry cleaners on a block with 3 already established ones.

And as much as I want to be as eco-friendly as possible, I'm not going to go to Green Apple to pay $2.95 per shirt when GR's charges $2.00. And a sweater for $7.75? Hell no. I think my place charges $4!!

Oh nevermind. I realized that you might be talking about the liquor store...or rather what this post was ACTUALLY about!!

Sorry to veer off topic.

Apparently Garry...oh never mind. You're talking about the cleaners.

Posted by: soundfreak at March 27, 2009 3:39 PM

Best of luck to Lenny & crew! Anyone know what's happening to their previous space?

Posted by: dwarbi at March 27, 2009 4:04 PM

I've always liked Gary's store but the signage at the new location is an abomination. Nothing ruins the streetscape more than unsympathetic signage and this takes the biscuit. The folks next door at Farm must be fuming.
