coffee-peddlar-court-street-031309.jpg
After a soft opening earlier this week (reported by Cobble Hill Blog), a new cafe called the Coffee Pedlar opens for real today in the former Margaret Palca Bakes space at 210 Court Street at Warren. If anyone stops in, please report back! GMAP

"Soft opening" is my new favourite expression, having just replaced "stimulus package".

Anyway, I was surprised Margaret Palca Bakes went out of business. It always seemed busy to me. The employees were quite friendly, albeit sloooooowwwwwww.

How can a coffee shop have a "soft opening?" Was the coffee only warm instead of hot???

Good luck to them though.

Risky. The rent there is super high. Tea Lounge is 2 blocks away. I'll reserve judgement until I try it.

> How can a coffee shop have a "soft opening?"

As of yesterday, one size of coffee, no lids.

The interior looks nice. Tea Lounge looks like a cofee shop in a mid-island strip mall.

Soft opening? for the out of town tourists?

Smudge-

?

"Tea Lounge looks like a cofee shop in a mid-island strip mall."

I have -other- issues with the Tea Lounge decor ( like it needs to leave the Deadhead antique store bohemia look behind) but mid- island strip mall? I don't see the connection.

This is a block away from my apaerment. We already have Marquet, Ted and Honey, and Tea Lounge nearby. I wonder if they'll serve decent food?

Posted by: gracias at March 13, 2009 3:15 PM

Er, that's "apartment"...

Posted by: gracias at March 13, 2009 3:16 PM

Prodigal_Son -- The Tea Lounge building is a plain box. There's something about the look inside, especially those cheap ceiling tiles, that reminds me of a Chinese restaurant in a strip mall. Maybe it's just me.

It's owned by the Frankies of Frankies' fame. They were convinced to open it by the landlord.

Posted by: crane at March 13, 2009 3:55 PM

that spelling is going to drive me crazy. What the heck is a "pedlar?"

Posted by: tiptoe at March 13, 2009 4:00 PM

I'm with Smudge, I enter Tea Lounge and it instantly makes me feel like I'm back in middle school at a strip mall waiting for my mom to finish up at TJ Max.

Excited for Pedlar/Stumptown.

I used to live nearby and that area is starved for a really good cup of coffee. The frankies/stumptown combo sounds promising.

Tea Lounge can piss off. Horrible coffee, food, patrons and service. However it serves a purpose in it keeps the strollers, mommies and twits out of the good coffee shops.

Posted by: Billiamsburg at March 13, 2009 6:35 PM

The internet says "pedlar" is a variant of "peddler."

Posted by: Nomi at March 13, 2009 10:02 PM

I had a cup this morning... if they keep the quality where it is, they will do great.

Posted by: an at March 14, 2009 12:47 PM

i am a mommy and sometimes twit, have stroller and will continue to patronize all good coffeeshops until dorkwads like billiamsburg are slowly driven insane and melt into sad little puddles.

Does anyone know if they're selling Stumptown whole beans?

Posted by: Nomi at March 14, 2009 6:47 PM

The coffee here is better than most I have had in the area. tho we miss the bacon sarnies.

Before moving in July '08 I lived in that neighborhood for seven years and no place turned over more often than that corner property. While I lived there I saw at least 4 different tenants, maybe more. All of them always appeared busy, yet no one seems to be able to make it work long-term.

I don't know what the problem is, but no matter what I would not bother getting attached to the Pedlar.

I had a delicious latte and a yummy, molasses-y cake there on Saturday. I'm a big fan of the simple but sophisticated decor and straightforward coffee & cake offerings. Margaret Palca looked shoddy - was never tempted to sit in there, though I definitely am with Pedlar. And I never saw anyone buy Palca's pre-cooked food. That was a lot of perishable inventory to have to keep in stock; surely a reason for their demise.

They do sell whole beans... I bought some Hair Bender.

I went in for some coffee. It seems clean and well organized. Hope they keep up the good work, I love a place that is clean, it says alot. They need to have more of a variety of pastries, scones, crossiants, muffins, cakes, etc. and delcious foods that will keep people coming. It's new and everyone looks new.

just had coffee there. v good. i also dislike tea lounge, i have a serious caffeine addiction, oh yeah, and i happen to have a baby. billiamsburg, why don't you just stay at home and drink instant, you ass.
