Streetlevel: Cafe Martino on Myrtle Closes

Cafe Martino, a cute Cuban-by-way-of-Paris boite at 559 Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill, has closed up shop. We ate lunch there a couple of times and quite enjoyed it. The closing's a real bummer for that stretch, which was starting to show some real potential. GMAP

That's too bad indeed for that particular stretch of Myrtle Ave. It's located right around the corner from me and I noticed it had been closed for the last several weeks. I thought the Pratt kids were giving the place enough business but I guess not.

This is very sad. I don't know this place in particular but I think that most restaurants didn't really start feeling the pinch until after the holidays...late January & February. Most mom & pops don't have a big operating budget cushion and there will be a lot more of this. It will be a real wake up call to landlords.

u say it's going to be a wake up call to landlords, i assume meaning that they should lower the rent. but are you going to lower your own tenants residential rent dave? hmm?

Residential rents are a lot more fluid & efficient market and there are far fewer ways for a landlord to overprice an apartment. When there are few retail space in many neighborhoods (and especially decent ones that don't require a ton of work) the market is not so efficient.

No, I am not. It's priced under market and has been.

I doubt that many people who've eaten there are very surprised by this. The place, and its owner, were very charming but also very amateur.

A lot of Myrtle ave restaurants are pretty dead, I'm sure this won't be the last to go.

this place was great too bad it's gone. I wouldn't call it amateur, i would call it a breath of fresh air. And Myrtle Ave restaurants "pretty dead"? I don't quite follow you ...

^ people at myrtle can't afford to eat at overpriced eateries. duh. honestly business IS good for neighborhoods but some places just go beyond the border of ridiculousness and unnecessary and just dont really service peoples' needs well. i dont want to see empty storefronts on 5th avenue in park slope, but i will not shed a tear if most of them close down. they are mostly all irrelevant businesses to begin with.

unfortunately, i agree with Somedude. The place just wasn't up to snuff. they'd been struggling for a long time.

Sad to see this place go. I was hoping with the opening of the Absolut condos nearby, they might get a bump in business, but it seems they couldn't hold on long enough to wait for it to fill up.
