Whatever one's feelings are about the aesthetics of the project or the efficacy of imminent domain to obtain the requisite space you would have to admit that a construction development this large would require a workforce that the stimulus money is designed to help create.
Before I'm attacked politically, I am not a trickle-downer who believes that Ratner should get bailed out, I just see a lot of jobs being created by a big project like this going ahead.

or it could become even more of an albatros. We should only subsidize projects that are in the public interest.
Sports arenas do not qualify, in my opinion.

Not to mention development projects that are a complete giveaway to the developer without a proper public review. Did I mention my opposition to eminent domain for profit???

I think Obama should give the Atlantic Yards as much money as possible just to make sure his reign of retardation only lasts 4 years.

The auto-correct of my spelling of "eminent domain" really could undermine my argument.

I signed the petition twice,
I.P. Freeley
and

Xander Crews: Rude, disrespectful and wrong as per usual.

Posted by: Nokilissa at March 17, 2009 3:08 PM

I think as long as the money goes to rich white guys I am ok with that.

Posted by: Xander Crews at March 17, 2009 3:16 PM

whatever ends up being built/should or shouldn't be built/etc at Atlantic Yards doesn't negate the need for the 'platform' to be built over the LIRR tracks and other infrastructure improvements. I would have no problem with that aspect of project getting funds and being done now.
Whatever the market picture looks like in a couple years will determine when/what gets built next.

I just signed the petition.

Someone create a petition in favor of stimulus money for Atlantic Yards so I can sign it.

Posted by: slick at March 17, 2009 3:45 PM

Double edged sword, that project employees a good number of people. Jobs are so valuable in this market.

Posted by: Under the Radar at March 17, 2009 3:56 PM

It creates construction jobs- which yes, we do need. But there are plenty of other places to spend stimulus money to create jobs for other people as well, and not reward Ratner for being a greedy sob.

Dick Hertz is on board petition signed.

Examples of other "shovel-ready" projects in Brooklyn, bxgirl? I've long been agnostic on Atlantic Yards, but if we're trying to kill the project, we need real alternatives for job creation.

Posted by: tonewlots at March 17, 2009 6:59 PM

I really don't know- haven't researched. But ratner's AY is far from shovel ready. How about we fix the subways and roads and streetlamps first? There are subway stations falling down around us- add jobs for people who can help fixs and upgrade them.

> "How about we fix the subways and roads and streetlamps first?"

Amen.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 17, 2009 8:03 PM

How about...
- Replacing the Gowanus expressway with a tunnel
- Building BRT bus system to serve neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are under served by
public transportation
-Building the JFK-lower Manhattan rail link AND providing a stop in Brooklyn
-Building a Hudson river rail tunnel to reduce truck traffic
-Building schools to replace the trailers that serve as classrooms for public schools
-Fixing the elevators in public housing
-Remediating the Gowanus Canal

In addition, federal dollars from the stimulus bill should not be used to build a facility that would take jobs away from one state and relocate them to another state.
