Parts of Brooklyn Bridge Park To Be Completed This Year

pier-6-brooklyn-bridge-park-0309.jpg
At a meeting with Community Board 2's Parks and Recreation Committee last night, Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corp. head Regina Myer provided more details about the timeline of the park build-out while deflecting questions about behind-the-scenes political maneuverings surrounding the City's efforts to wrest control on the park from the State; to date, the project has been a joint effort. Myer told the committee that the volleyball courts, a dog run, and a playground planned for Pier 6 at the end of Atlantic Avenue would be completed by the end of this year but that a restaurant and water taxi berth would have to wait. Meanwhile, work has also begun at Pier 1 at the end of Old Fulton Street. Update: Curbed has the rendering of the plan for Pier 6 posted here.

Yay, a waterfront dog run will be awesome!

How about we make development of the western portion of Pier 6 a "capital investment requirement" in a Request for Proposals for the aforementioned restaurant and water taxi. Yeah, we're giving up revenue in the out-years but we're not settling for half-a-pier now. Just thinking out-loud here....

so a part of one pier at Atlantic Avenue will be turned into a dogrun, a playground, and a couple of volleyball courts (volleyball?). I'm sorry but this does not sound like a gazillion-dollar park to me.

mckenzie, this is one small piece of the park. sometimes it seems like some people just like to knock the park, like they want it to fail. i just don't get it. this will be great for brooklyn. we should all be hoping it succeeds.

Posted by: Atlantic Frantic at March 17, 2009 10:42 AM

frankly, I'm a little confused about the Park. It's not that I want to knock it, but I am hearing and reading different things. Some say this is the first small piece, others say that because the proposed condos will not be built, the rest of the park is on hold. so is it one small piece or all there will be in the foreseeable future? Anyone who believes anything the State says about this project has not lived in Brooklyn very long. I'm all for the park, but this is not a park, it's a pier. I mean it's better than nothing, but not enough to cheer about. It's also not finished yet. Sop let's wait and see. I'm all for the park, I wish it had been built years ago as promised.

I agree Atlantic Frantic...I think the park is going to be wonderful. It's been so nice to go back to the Promenade and envision the huge swath of greenery which will soon line that entire area of Brooklyn's waterfront.

It really is going to be spectacular (with that view!)and no doubt one of the most beautiful parks in NYC when it's finished.

Even the first phase sounds terrific so far.

I think that BBPDC president Regina Myer has been very straight-forward over the past eight months in explaining what has been designed, what work is funded (and not), what is under construction, and the status of the private development intended (under the current plan) to fund on-going maintenance and operation. Except for the most recent news about Pier 6, most of that information is posted on the BBPDC website: www.brooklynbridgeparknyc.org/. I strongly discourage people from getting their information about the status of the park from the Brooklyn Paper.

McKenzie - the reason you're confused is because you are reading the "reporting" on this park from the Brooklyn Papers. If you ignore the lies that they are desperately trying to spread, the picture becomes pretty clear.
The condos are not dead. They will be built when the market comes back. The whole park will cost $350 million. They have about $230 million allocated right now over the next several years. Of that, $100 million is going to build this piece of pier 6 and the stuff on pier 1 that has been previously talked about. Over the next several years, the parkland between them will be connect the two in one glorius park. Pretty straightforward.

BHO--I asked you this the other day, but are you really taking an anti-park position? And if so, why?

Posted by: wasder at March 17, 2009 11:58 AM

Just near term anti-park, wasder. Bad news for the park is good news for the bear market. Long term it'll be welcome in my book. Sadistic, huh?

bkre,
right, from now on, I will base my opinions on unassailable facts posted by anonymous bloggers on Brownstoner.

Posted by: mcKenzie at March 17, 2009 12:59 PM

Never said you should do that. You should go to any of the numerous public meetings that they hold, or go to the community board meetings they attend. I'm just saying that getting your news from the Brooklyn Papers on this topic is waaay dumber than getting it from random brownstoner posters. At least the random brownstoner posters are right every once in a while.

that incredibly valuable space and they are putting in a dog run. What a waste of money.

Posted by: Petebklyn at March 17, 2009 2:07 PM

"Sadistic, huh?"

that would be a stretch, but anti-social and against the common good would be a better description of your position here. You are remarkably selfish and self-serving in every position you take. I don't what else to say about you except I have pity on your child if you really do have one. Having such a person as you as a father would be debilitating to one's chances of living a happy and healthy life.

The rendering in Curbed looks very nice. except for the big blue highrise off to the side that I guess now will just be a vacant lot for a while.
I say if this is not actually built by the end of the year lets take our pitchforks and torches and confront the Development Corporation.

Why is nobody suggesting that the park receive stimulus money? If anything is "shovel ready" this project is. Better this than Atlantic Yards.

Posted by: statestreeter at March 17, 2009 8:52 PM

statestreeter, it has been suggested that BBP is a "shovel ready" project seemingly perfect for stimulus money. However, federal legislators decided not to have "ear marks" for stimulus funds, so BBP cannopt be called out as a specific recepient, and the funds available nationally for park projects is relatively small. Nonetheless, people in a position to try and get some of those funds are actively pursuing that.
