This week, I wanted to open up each morning with an edible spread. But this morning, I can’t think of anything else that can be spread and eaten.
So you’re all on your own to figure out what to discuss.

How about:
- Cats and how they get on their backs and spread their legs so you can rub their belly.
- The Economy spread so thin.
- DIBS’ sex life spread over many continents
- The spread of reality shows on TV
- The unemployed posters and the resumes they’ve spread all over town.
- Poo and how the mist is spread.

Let’s hope that some posters spread out and post in other threads

Spread the word....Let this be the last Open thread about a spread.

What is the mega millions worth tonight? Wait...lemme check...ok. It's at 34 mill. What would that be after taxes? this morning i get a knock at my door while im ummm well you know what i was doing and my roommate was like rob can you help me with duke's chain? i was like ugh. ill be right out. i turn my tv off and wipe my hands on my undies, put on my pants and go out to help him with duke's choke chain (it keeps getting tangled) and it takes us like 20 minutes to figure out how to fix it, usually im the one who gets it right first. but this morning i couldnt really maneuvre the chain links cuz my hands were all greasy! lol. he totally knew. i felt like such a tool.

Yes, Snappy. Figure that the present value of the $34MM that is supposed to be spread out I don't know how many years is roughly 50% of that ($17MM) which you would receive in all cash and then after taxes you'd get someting like 50% of that $17MM.

The "jackpot" amount for the lottery represents the amount paid out in a 50 year annuity. If you choose the lump some cash amount, it's typically half of the bonus - and then after taxes it is halved again. so a 125 million jackpot would be an approx 31 million dollar lump sum payment after tax.

I hugged and cheek kissed alot of people that night when saying good bye. Some that I had previously met, I hugged and kissed them when I first saw them and said hello.

I would think it's quite common....No?
I come from a culture where it's very common to hug and cheeck kiss people when greeting them.

Does anyone know what the level of discussion in the OT is supposed to be??? I thought that there was no rule about the level here and that's why it was invented. As far as vitriolic arguments that ensue on other threaads, if they remain on topic it looks like they are OK. that's not saying the vitriol is good or bad.

Dave, I'm sitting here dumbfounded, wondering the same thing. If the OT is supposed to have a topic or legit discussion, then it's not a true OT. I can see how people are afraid to 'join this party' going on in here everyday, but until a couple of months ago I wasn't a regular commenter either. I hung back, to chicken to join, and then got over it. Nobody bit me. Nobody told me to get out. Is it intimidating to come in here? Yes. But that doesn't mean you can't.

Right now I'm riding the line between offended and annoyed. I'm also starting to think, really think, about something the What has been shouting for a long time. I feel like we are being baited. Active vs. Lurker, Informed vs. Uninformed, Projects vs. Cozy Condo, etc. Is that "comments" thread a true attempt to figure out an issue? The conversation has been had before. Or, is it a way to get more clicks? Yeah, all of us click like fiends all day, but what better way to up it than to invite occasional lurkers to click today and keep coming back for the update on "As the Blog Turns."

Seriously, I think Mr. B wants / needs more comments in the threads...not just this one. I think he worded his opening post very poorly. He needs to look at the topics he's putting up every day and dress those up and then he'll get more posts/comments.

And the people in that thread saying that the post often veer off topic have no idea what the f*ck they're talking about. Ever since the OT was started, things have been so on topic in other threads.

BRG, I honestly think folks want to be a part of this party but are too afraid or whatever to try to join. Thus the boo-hooing. Like I said, I was nervous to jump in here at first as well. A few months later I've got people trying to help me find a job and offering to buy me drinks at the Meet-Up. If that's not proof that you guys don't bite and are nice as hell to new people, I don't know what is. This is all a bunch of bullshit designed to get more hits.

Mr. B should have done a story on that. While he doesn't have any buildings in Brooklyn, he does in Manhattan...Seagram Building. One of my favorite modern buildings in NYC. It is truly a beautiful building.
One of my other favorite modern buildings is Lever Building.

Mr. B, how about doing some 'Farther Afield (from Brooklyn)' features on this site.

My belief is that there is not much going on, real estate wise, in Brooklyn lately. No(gasp)mega-million-dollar fixer-upper with four elderly rent control tennts sold yesterday in Clinton Hill. I don't think a house has sold in Clinton Hill all year. So things are slow.
We need to talk about something. Cats, edible spreads, and dibs' sex life seem like natural alternatives.

It's an interesting idea, gemini. MM, for example, could do a Crown Heights piece. Bob Marvin could do a PLG piece. I'm sure there are lots of others that could contribute some very interesting informative work. Adam, Masterplvmber, etc as mentioned.

Whether they have the time or the inclination is another thing, as is Mr. B's ability/desire to pay for such a thing.

He is a very talented major league baseball player for the Boston Red Sox, although he's actually from right here in Manhattan. Manny is known for being one of baseball's very best hitters as well as one of its absolute strangest personalities. He just does goofy stuff, and like you Rob, he also doesn't seem to care at all what people think about the goofy things he does. He just does stuff that makes you scratch your head, which has inspired the phrase "That's Manny being Manny."

I was going about my day and these comments kept coming back to me:

Granted, this doesn't occur everywhere, but I have several places I go to buy things (my barber, the doggie daycare place I sometimes take my dog, my dry cleaner, the local bodega guy who sells me off-price cigarettes) where the people in various ways express their appreciation for my services. That's whay I continue to patronize these places. You need to find some new places to shop, Troy.

I probably am shopping in the wrong places, but I live in Park Slope and have never found the shop owners to be appreciative. Not expecting a handjob in the back room, but a "hey how's it going?" would be nice when you've been going to the same place since grade school.
Interestingly, the friendliest shop owners seem to be middle eastern guys, but that may be because they assume I am part of the fold.

Troy, there is one little corner store in Greenwood Heights, I think it's called Hamza, where I get star treatment. They are the only shop owners I have had in a long time greet me when I come in, ask me how I'm doing, etc. I actually wind up having a conversation with the guys for 5 minutes or so each time I go in. That keeps me going back. Other stores, and Mr. B, could learn a lot from that example.

Snappy...make spanish rice...ground beef, sauteed onions and green peppers, rice and tomato sauce. Cook the rice first then bake it all until you get a nice crust on the top (thats my favorite part). A pound of ground beef will give you at least 4 dinners of spanish rice when its all mixed up and cooked

Anyone ever had Lindeman's Framboise? It goes great with salmon or tilapia. Oh, and it I'll bet it also goes great with hardwood floors with cherry inlays :) I think it also helps to bring out the texture of damask curtains.

sam...yes...cook the rice, brown the meat, sautee the peppers, throw it all in a big baking dish with some tomato sauce and heat it at 350 or so until the top browns a bit.

Lots of salt when you eat it, even if you do have high BP like me!!!

I don't know what you all are talking about. I find most Brooklyn shop owners to be very friendly and almost obsequious. I mean, if they are really the proprietors. Of course I'm friendly too, I don't go in there all big-honcho like. It's the store employees in Brooklyn that are just horrible. Is there anywhere in the world with ruder more sullen less happy workers than in shops and supermarkets all over the Boro? That's why Trader Joe's is such a pleasure. Happy people working at the registers and behind the counters!!!!

Ok, Cobble, I'm retracting the 'temporary tiara' from the welcome package suggestion. Instead, how about a handbook that describes the awards given out here, guidelines on how to win one, and a description of the tiara and sash awarded with each win? Be sure to add a footnote about a certain poster (ahem-bxgirl) refuses to turn over tiaras after the next person wins :)

It's the GD economy on my nerves.
I will try the Spanish Rice, sounds right up my alley. Tho tonight the wife sez she is making chicken kiev, whatever.
So we couldn't keep up the rally. Too bad. I was hoping to spend part of the evening like Scrooge McDuck counting my assets, but its too depressing until we hit at least 8000 again. Weren't we at 13,000 like the day before yesterday?

cobblehiller, as much as I'd like to be able to be on here all day, haven't had the time to follow into the deeper waters of these here comment threads in a while.

Use to contribute here and there with photos and article tips in years past (from cobble hill, actually) but yeah, have downgraded to just another f'in observer here, mea culpa.

As one other person above commented, there are so many comments by the time a person checks in later in the day or evenings that it's hardly worth posting into a conversation that's already evolved/devolved to personal chat-chat, for the most part.

But don't let me get in the way of you owning the place, carry on...

The brown sauce is sweet. It's made out of tamarind.

If you like a tangy taste, next time you get indian ask for Achar (sp?). It's pickled things, ie. mango, carrots, garlic, etc.
Eat it with the rice....yummy.

There are traces of a Mies project in Brooklyn: University Terrace near Pratt Institute in Clinton Hill, a Mitchell-Lama project, originally planned by Mies.

Although the firm Kelly and Gruzen ultimately did the architecture, Mies' "slab block" principles are still evident in the three towers that leave most of their superblocks open for lawns and parking lots, quite similar to the Colonnade Apartments in Newark and Lafayette Gardens in Detroit, contemporary urban renewal projects designed by the Great One.

I learned this when friends of my parents bought an apartment at University Terrace when I was a boy. I recall the project's original name as "The Quadrangles," no doubt referring to the Pratt campus, and appearing on maps of Brooklyn at the time.

University Terrace was definitely one of the better looking Mitchell-Lama projects. It was built by the Tishman group which, the project's brochures proudly announced, were responsible for many of the "fine" cooperatives along Park Avenue.

Our friends' apartment was quite nice and had a big, square living room in the corner of the building, unusual when most other new buildings had bedrooms at this location. This arrangement was similar to Mies' Lake Shore Drive Apartments in Chicago, where as many living rooms as possible are located at corners to take advantage of the view. But the Brooklyn apartments had an advantage over the Chicago numbers: they had balconies extending the living rooms' width.

I remember thinking University Terrace very sleek, with its plate glass lobbies approached by private driveways. I don't know the condition of the project now, but in its day it represented The New for a segment of middle-class Brooklynites who didn't move to the suburbs.
