What shall we discuss today?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 9:17 AM

HI Everyone…..
This entire week let's discuss spreadable edibles......okay!

On a bagel, bialy, English muffin, etc., do you prefer butter or cream cheese?

Well, start the schmear.....

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 25, 2009 9:17 AM

damn it!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 25, 2009 9:18 AM

So, what's on tap for today? Are we to discuss the finer points of 'Law & Order?' Do you prefer the original L&O? L&O SVU, Criminal Intent? Who was your favorite duo? Brisco and Green? Brisco and Curtis? The very first two (whose names I'm drawing a blank on)?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 9:18 AM

Oh, ok, BRG beat me to a topic!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 9:19 AM

Darn you DIBS!!!!!

Dirty, nice try...tomorrow play a little dirtier and maybe you'll be 1st.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 9:19 AM

I like my bagels plain and un-toasted. I turns out to be just a hunk of bread, which is kinda gross for breakfast, but, we already know I'm a nutball :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 9:20 AM

ugh im not sure why i never really did it before coming in for the most part, but there was a brake problem on the R train this morning so i got out at Atlantic ave and just took the N train from there one stop to canal and walked to work from there. I got here so much faster than taking the local R all the way to spring and it was only 2 stops from home to work (tho a lot added walking but id rather walk on a nice morning like this than be on a train anyway). plus the N goes over the bridge and it's so pretty in the morning.

(honestly i always thought stupid people switched trains ahahhah). i might start doing this everyday! but i like having a seat on the R. i had to stand on the N, but since it was just one stop over the bridge it wasn't so bad. i guess with the mta cuts im going to have to start getting used to standing. also is it socially frowned upon to sit on the floor on the subway? i used to do it when on the NJ trains all the time when i couldnt find a seat.

Cream cheese

And, Curtis was way HOT. A lot of the latin perps are really hot too.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 9:22 AM

BOOOOOOOOOOOO my boss just came in from vacation and brought in two huge boxes of dunkin donuts. of COURSE today is the day i bought breakfast cuz i walked from canal. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Posted by: PitbullNYC at March 25, 2009 9:22 AM

Rob, on my way home I typically take the N to Pacific and then get out and take the B63 bus and enjoy the scenery while traveling down 5th Ave. It takes longer, but it's nice after a hectic day to slow down and people watch :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 9:22 AM

rob...don't know if you heard this at the party but Petebrooklyn said he walked to the party from his office on 54th & 3rd!!!!! I think he said it took just over an hour.

What shall we discuss today?

The implosion of the Mutant Asset Bubble aka Hedge Fund Assrape!

Hedge-Fund Pay May Fall 25% in 2009 as Fees Evaporate (Update1)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=aJSFc9gUv9gw&refer=us

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Compensation for U.S. hedge-fund employees may drop as much as 25 percent this year as the firms try to recoup last year’s investment losses.

The decline will cut hedge-fund paychecks to about half the record levels of 2007, according to estimates by Alan Johnson, founder of Johnson Associates Inc., a New York-based compensation-consulting firm whose clients include financial- services companies.

It's hard to find Lithium Crystals to power the Mutant Asset Bubble!

Hedge funds may cut 20,000 workers around the globe this year, a record 14 percent of the industry’s jobs, according to estimates by New York-based Options Group. About 920 hedge funds, or about 12 percent of the total, closed last year, according to Hedge Fund Research.

Hey, does Mr. B ever re-post a thread story? The argument that started late yesterday about the breastfeeding woman in the BPL was good, but it appeared so late it got few responses. I weighed in this morning, but of course, late to the party. I was curious what more people thought about the issue.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 9:28 AM

Bialy- if a good bialy and not the crap that most NYC delis serve, toasted with extra butter

Bagel- everything, non toasted, light c/c

i dont think it matters. if you have to breastfeed just do it. dont make a big deal about it. i think certain people get into a tizzy for one of two reasons. 1.) they are prudes or 2.) the woman breastfeeding makes a big production about it and breastfeeds in public for attention.

I'll answer my own question although I was being very sarcastic.

On the rare occasion (once a year) that I eat a bagel.....definitely cream cheese.

I’m eating a croissant now, that’s like eating an entire stick of butter.

Speaking of Law and Order, they are filming in Carroll Gardens tomorrow, on Henry Street somewhere around 2nd Place (signs on Henry for a block or two in either direction).

You can like with normal folk???

What the hell does that mean???

You are correct What, I will make far less money in 2009. If we make more money this year at the firm I'll get a bonus in 2010. That said, I made a lot of money for a long time, culminating in 2007. I paid off two other mortgages and bought some cars. 2008 wasn't so bad either, legacy payments from my former employer. 2009 I'm partly living off of capital. No big deal.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 9:34 AM

THL, this week we're discussing spreads...next week will be devoted to breads and bread products.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 9:35 AM

No mayo, no cream cheese? Wow, so how do you feel about cheese? ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 9:35 AM

oy oy oy!

Everything bagel(non toasted) with scallion cc
also toasted Cinna-raisin bagel with butter

Posted by: gemini10 at March 25, 2009 9:35 AM

Toasted (well done) poppy seed with a large amount of cream chees, preferably Philadelphia and not some cheaper deli crap. Never butter. Butter is for toast.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 9:36 AM

L&O used to annoy me with their filming. When I used to live on Henry near Clark (years ago) they filmed outside my window at night and had their big spotlights damn near shining in my window. Argh! And, when I graduated law school, I had to go out of my way to avoid the filming to get in and out of the Manhattan court houses. I actually wound up on camera walking by for an episode of "American Justice" hosted by Bill Kurtis! I was mortified! They put up signs saying if you walk in a certain area you automatically consent to being on film. I had no choice. I was about to be late for a motion argument in court and didn't have time to wait or run around to the back entrance.

The GBP1.75 billion tap of the 4.25% December 2049 Treasury gilt was uncovered, with a bid-to-cover ratio of just 0.93 times, sharply down from 2.03 at the previous auction of this bond, held Feb. 4.

What...first of all, the last failed gilts auction was 2002. The result was pretty much a non event since it was an auction for 40 year securities and, it didn't totally fail...it was 93% bought 1.63 B pounds vs. 1.75 B pfferred.

The result was all but impercebtible in the currenct and the yield on ten year gilts moved 4 basis points. 40 Years is a very long term issue...I don't think there are any other governments that offer 40 year bonds.

It was a non event.

As far as things being bad I'm still eating out and buying wine. Nothing shoved up my ass that I don't want. Were you ever at the I-Beam in San francisco??????

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 9:56 AM

Greetings from San Diego!

Yesterday I relived my youth: I was stood up! I was supposed to meet an ex-customer for drinks. She now works for a competing Japanese company, and wanted advice on how to succeed in such an environment, especially as a woman. I waited for her for ½ hour, but she was a no-show.

This incident brought back memories of an incident that occurred in my freshman year at college. I went to undergraduate engineering school at Cooper Union downtown, where the ratio of men to women was something on the order of 50 to 1. The social life was “fantastic”. One day I learned that there was a woman in the chemical engineering class who lived near me – one subway stop away. I was thrilled!

I immediately hatched a plan to meet her. I researched her schedule, and what time she got on the subway. I would “coincidentally” meet her at the subway stop, so that we could chat on the train ride to school. As I later found out, my research was off. She actually came to the subway stop one and a half hours after I had thought.

I went into action. I arrived at the subway stop at the (wrong) appointed time, and lingered around, waiting for her to arrive. I waited ……and waited…..and waited…..and she didn’t show up. All the time I was trying to put on a brave face, and pretend that everything was OK. Finally, the clerk in the token booth leaves his spot, walks over to me, and says in a slow, compassionate voice: “Son, you’re just going to have to face it: she’s not coming”. I was SO embarrassed I wanted to crawl under a rock.

There is a happy ending, though. Eventually I did get to meet her, and we went out on a couple of dates.

Maybe that would be a good topic for today: most embarrassing dating moment

I could just as well post about my lesser qualities. I sometimes pick my nose and I've even worn my underwear more than one day. I probably wear the same pair of jeans and shirt for a week or so when i'm just at home. I go shopping and freeze food for dinners. I put my pants on one leg at a time.

Chofas are architectural elements that protrude upward from the gable ends of temples in Thailand. They are usually made of teak and covered with gold leaf. They often have a dragon head as part of the design.

I've used Gray Line and would recommend them. I liked the "Uptown" loop because it hits more residential areas and sights that are away from the usual midtown tourist sights.

Posted by: benson at March 25, 2009 11:15 AM

Biff,
No view on the buses but the Circle Line is good. Whether they end up on buses or boats they need to make sure they go on a warm day. Top deck of a bus or open section of a boat gets real cold fast unless temp is above about 55-60, as guests of mine have found out to their cost before.

Posted by: etson at March 25, 2009 11:16 AM

benson, thanks much. I just went on the Gray Line website and their basic uptown and downtown loops look good. I appreciate the feedback.

etson, thanks to you as well. I didn't know Circle Line did bus tours. I thought they were limited to boats. I think the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend, but I'll make sure they wear layers on the bus.

March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Purchases of new homes in the U.S.
unexpectedly rose in February from a record low as plummeting prices and cheaper mortgage rates lured some buyers.
Sales increased 4.7 percent to an annual pace of 337,000 after a 322,000 rate in January, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. The median sales price fell 18 percent from February 2008, the biggest year-on-year drop since records began in 1964, and the glut of properties on the market dwindled.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 11:24 AM

Posted by: bxgrl at March 25, 2009 11:38 AM

Wait, you all move too fast for me.

First off, Simon and Alex were there? Aww, damn. I kind of love their crazy. What were they wearing? They read this site?

Secondly, breastfeeding. Okay, missed discussion yesterday, but Rob, NO ONE (except Amy Sohn perhaps, who wrote an insipid article about it) does it to show off their boobs. They do it because their kid is screaming, or because their kid is fishing the boob out and they don't really give a damn anymore. Breastfeeding is one of those things that may seem socially awkward until you've experienced it. Then you don't care. And you don't care what anyone else thinks about it either.

That being said, nothing annoys me more (except small condos with too many bathrooms) than lactivists. Forumula is not poison. It is insane to work and breastfeed -- I know this and I didn't even have to do it.

I did the bus tours with my inlaws years ago. NEVER AGAIIIN!! Although it was funny when we drove by Stuy town and the tour guide pointed it out as "the projects."

I’ve never done the bus tours, but I would think they’d be a great way for a 1st timer to get familiar with this city, plus I think you can hop on and off all day.

Forget the Circle line boat cruise. It’s 3hrs of sheer boredom. I would highly recommend the Staten Island Ferry for a great view of the Downtown skyline, 30 minutes round trip and it’s Freeeeee.

My top picks for tourists to see in NYC:

- Downtown – Wall street, Federal Hall (hey our 1st president of this great country was inaugurated on those steps), Stupid Bull Sculpture (yes, I hate that thing, but everyone insists on seeing it), South Street Seaport, Battery Park, Castle Clinton, WTC Site
Staten Island Ferry

- Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty
- China town
- Flatiron District
- Village – Washington Square Arch
- Soho
- Rock Center, Top of the Rock, St. Pat’s (although I think St. John’s is a much nicer cathedral), Radio City, etc.
- Walk up Fith Avenue from 42nd to Central Park - pointing out NY Library (make sure they get a pic in front of the lions), Chrysler Building (one of my favorite buildings in all of NYC), Trump Tower, Cartier Building, Plaza Hotel, etc, etc.
- Grand Central
- Times Square (at night, so they can see all the stupidity at it’s best)
- Central Park – Fountain, Literary Walk, Stawberry Fields, The bridge always featured in movies (forget the name) etc. etc.
- MOMA, MET, Guggenheim, Frick
- Tram to Roosevelt Island (great view of Midtown skyline)
- Walk Brooklyn Bridge (hey every tourist needs to do that); although I like the Manhattan better cause you get a view of the Brooklyn Bridge.
- Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle
- Empire State Building

And Yes, all of the above can be done in a 3-day weekend.....put your running shoes on.

So much more to see and do..this is such a great city!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 12:07 PM

BRG, nice list, you can combine a couple of things. Take the train to Brooklyn, walk over the Manhattan Bridge into Chinatown, walk around there then head south, walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge and do Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo.

This is a Brooklyn blog, after all :-)

You were here this morning, Snappy. Where did you go??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 1:17 PM

Denton, why would a tourist want to see things in Brooklyn???

I didn't include more sights cause Biff said his Guests are here for the weekend.
Believe me there's so much more to see in NYC than the touristy crap.

Yes, I love the Man. & Bklyn Bridges loop. Hubby and I did that a couple of months ago. We walked across Manhattan Bridge through Chinatown (which btw is not the touristy part, which is nice), ate Dim Sum, then walked back on the Brooklyn Bridge and walked around Bklyn Heights.

Here's some pics, if anyone is interested.

What a drag it is getting old.

"Kids are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day.

"Things are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day.

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

"Men just aren't the same today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy. You can tranquilise your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimise yourplight.

Doctor,plese, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

Life's just much too hard today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running to the shelter of a mother's little helper
They just helped you on your way through your busy dying day.

Man, you try to get a little work done and you miss all the fun.

Gemini,

Do you still wanna talk RHNY?

Kelly- Why did you show up in the first place? Please remind us?
Jill- say Zarin Fabric one more time and I may show up with spray paint! I feel like I'm watching a Zarin Fabric infomercial.
Bethany- Is she winning the bitter award this year or what? I used to like her a lot but she's really in need of some cill pills this year.
Simon & Alex- I LOVED the Alex's dress she wore at the fashion show. Total Gorgeousness. Simon, I'm glad he called Ramoaner out on her crap. LOVE that he said, say it you have no filter! LOL! Maybe not the best place to confront her but, how often does he really get the chance? I'd have done the same.
Luann- What more can we say. Still full of it. She's not fooling anyone.

My mom once got a valium from a friend when she was *SUPER* stressed and wigging out. Her friend told her to only take half. My mom, figuring the pill was too small to do anything, took the whole thing, passed out and pissed the bed. She hasn't touched another valium since! (Sorry for telling that story, mom!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 1:50 PM

Never take them in public, Rob and only take one!

So Dave tells us Biff!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 1:56 PM

sooo - serious question here
do most of you guys take anti- anxiety pills when you feel stressed/anxious?

It's funny b/c am sorta a nervous nelly but nothing too clinical or nothing that impedes my work/life so I haven't ever taken any pills.
However I have developed over the past few years a total fear of driving on highways that I don't normally drive on.
I LOVE driving in the city with all the madness etc - but I have had 2 panic attacks while driving on the highway and it's really scary where I just want to pull over
suggestions? - do I really need to take a pill for something like that?

Posted by: gemini10 at March 25, 2009 1:57 PM

I'd rather have the pill than a pint!

or is that I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy?? :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 1:57 PM

"One little half at the right moment can turn a girl's whole day around! ; )"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 1:57 PM

Drinking doesn't compare to Xanax, they're different things DIBS. And I can't drink in a stressful office meeting - for example.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 1:58 PM

It worked for Frances Farmer, Snappy.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 1:58 PM

Honestly, gemini, I take them for true text-book panic attacks, which are more frequent these days :( I'd never just pop one for the hell of it. They do have the propensity to become addictive so you have to be careful. Talk to a psychiatrist for your own situation and let him/her evaluate and go from there.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 2:00 PM

"do most of you guys take anti-anxiety pills when you feel stressed/anxious?"

I've never taken prescription medicine to sleep or relieve stress. But I'm not originally from this country. When I first arrived, I was flabbergasted at how many people take meds and/or are in therapy. Why is everyone so over-medicated? (Is it in order for them to deal with foreigners like me?)

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 2:00 PM

gemini that's what they make those little nips of vodka and henney for!!! nervous high driving. just kidding. i dont know, i dont even think youre supposed to be driving on anti anxiety medication really.. i dont take anti anxiety medications. malt liquor seems to take the edge off for me.
smoking relieves anxiety for me too, tho that is something i do want to stop. i have the worst smoker's cough. it's so unattractive for someone under the age of 75

Dave, at first I read that so wrong...I thought you called me Farmer Snappy! God, I gotta lay down and rest my peepers.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 2:02 PM

I never took them ever until about 2 years ago when something extremely stressful happened. I haven't taken any in weeks. But I love knowing they're nearby!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 2:03 PM

Yes, Biff, we pop pills to deal with the likes of you :) J/k Seriously though, I don't know many folks who aren't on meds and/or are in therapy and few who aren't really need to be! Therapy is quite relaxing. It's the one place where you don't get judged and you can motherf*** everyone up one wall and down the other with no repercussions. Very helpful for us stressed-out-sallys!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 2:04 PM

I suppose my question was a bit misdirected, am sorry -
I think I was more surveying the crowd
Sometimes I am more of a mind over matter type gal and try to just "toughen" out situations
It's just interesting to me to see how many people take anti-anxiety pills and why they take them

Posted by: gemini10 at March 25, 2009 2:05 PM

I feel stressed/anxious, but never so much as to take something. I don't have a high-stress job though; maybe that helps.

Posted by: infinitejester at March 25, 2009 2:05 PM

I've never taken anxiety or sleeping pills. I have never felt the need for an analyst or therapy either. Some of you may disagree.

Anticipating some good rewrites on that last sentence. Please don't disappoint me.

Okay, I'm going to admit my medication history.

I have NEVER EVER taken any medication for stress relieve or anxiety. Heck, I've rarely taken medication. I've never been sick except for the common cold.

And I don’t do street drugs. AND I DON'T drink alcohol.
What the heck is wrong with me?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 2:13 PM

Gemini-

Honestly, I RARELY take them. On;y if I've gotten really stressed (not general stress something specific) or upset.

For instance, When my pet was near death and I hadn't slept more than 2 hours straight over the course of 3 days and was constantly crying. I took enough just to take that sharp edge off and help me relax enough to sleep solidly.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 2:13 PM

In 1982, the company introduced "Shakes McJunkie," an emaciated addict who robbed characters of their possessions, which he then sold to buy McDonald's shakes. He was later reworked as "The Machead," a homeless, wild-eyed Big Mac addict who turned to panhandling and gay prostitution as a means of supporting his severe burger habit."

"I did cocaine twice and it never really had any effect. I liked the numbness in my mouth though when I rubbed it on my gums."

Prolly cut heavily with lidocaine. Still don't understand why the booger sugar is so popular in new york (supposedly the quality isn't very good here), while meth is destroying other cities in our country.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 25, 2009 2:18 PM

"I liked the numbness in my mouth though when I rubbed it on my gums."

Dave- I'd highly recommend you get yourself some Cepacol. Same effect w/o the gasoline taste. Being that it's so good at numbing in small doses it can be used in other ways as well. I'm sure you'll piece that together.

Oddly enough Snappy & Biff, that 2:49 rewrite is exactly waht I was doing last night, minus the cream cheese; but that's a good idea for next week.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 2:58 PM

Yes, BRG, see the picture! It's an adorable little brown girl wearing a crown! That would be *me*!! Suck it up chicka!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 2:59 PM

Dave, I think I channeled your activities for that re-write!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:00 PM

Snappy, you get your cute little black ass to the next Get Together and we'll see if I don't snatch your crown!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 3:00 PM

So I was about to suggest we try to answer lechecal's question "what is a brownstone?" when I went to the Forum and saw he had 53 posts under that question. Who needs us and what are we good for (other than 400+ meaningless posts and one brilliant ROTD per day).

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 3:00 PM

I'm stitching my crown to my head like cheap weave - try and pull that off if you dare! LOL

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:01 PM

"Suck it up chicka!"

When?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 3:02 PM

I did see Biff & BRG add helpfully to the HOTD thread.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 3:02 PM

Why does she get all the crowns?! : P

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 3:02 PM

When I saw that this thread was heading down pharmaceutical alley, I assumed there would be a lot more talk about Pot, especially since the discussion was focused on stress relief.

No wacky tobaccy for you guys?

I thought you lost your blog luv for me??? I'm gonna keep singing to Cobble. *She* appreciates me :)

I think Dave may need to take this little assessment:

http://www.saa-recovery.org/12ques.htm

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 3:03 PM

Cobble, I get them all because I'm simply crown-a-licious like that :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:04 PM

"Snappy, you get your cute little black ass to the next Get Together and we'll see if I don't snatch your crown!"

There is a very interesting potential rewrite there using the last three words...

Snappy, the girl in the pic is cute but not nearly as adorable as you in the pic you posted a couple of weeks ago.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 3:04 PM

Troy, the few times I've 'smoked up' I only wound up giggling uncontrollably, getting hyper paranoid and then sitting perfectly still unable to move or speak. Bad scene!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:05 PM

Aw, Biffy, that's another reason why I luv ya!

"Snappy, you get your cute little black ass to the next Get Together and we'll see if I don't snatch your crown!"

rewrite:

"Snappy, you get your cute little black ass to the next Get Together and we'll see if I don't crown your snatch!"

Biff, those last three words where chosen carefully. Didn't want to be too vulgar...like I see Snappy was in her re-write.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 3:13 PM

You sing away Snappy!

No wacky tabacky for this white girl — although I do like the smell of it. [See past OT where What pretends to have vaguely heard of pot, and CH admits to actually inhaling — in the waaay distant past!]

Where's the What?? I'm sure he's taken some choice compounds in his day!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 3:15 PM

Ok, ok,

rewrite:

"Snappy, you get your cute little black ass to the next Get Together and we'll see if I don't crown your hey-nanny-nanny!"

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:15 PM

THL...I'll take that when I get home. It won't open here. There is no doubt in my mind that I rank highly as a sexual addict. So, there's no sense in being anonymous about it; although, anonymous sex is the biggest kick for a sexual addict.

::clearing my throat for my daily serenade to Cobble::

ahem....

A little Dan Fogelberg?

"Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling christmas eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didnt recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totalled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldnt find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how."

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 3:26 PM

sooo - serious question here
do most of you guys take anti- anxiety pills when you feel stressed/anxious?

Y'all shouldn't fuck around with benzodiazepines, that is Klonopin, Valium, Xanax, et al. Don't take them, and don't let a doc prescribe them. They are addictive to many people, more so than docs are aware of. Once addicted, they are very hard to get off. Unlike other legal and illegal drugs, where other meds can help you taper down, there is no way to get off benzos easily. And drug treatment centers are used to dealing with junkies, not functional citizens who have been addicted to a legally prescribed drug thru no fault of there own.

If you try and cold turkey off you can develop seizures and occasionally die, along with other nasty side effects, one of which is a propensity to experience the symptoms for which the drug was prescribed, times ten.

If you have panic disorder, there are other treatments, with CBT the best. Don't pop these pills, they are straight up fucked up.

Posted by: denton at March 25, 2009 3:27 PM

That song does make me cry, but I love it so!

A more *snappy* song: (Jim Croce usually makes me cry, but not this one!)

"Well the south side of chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
You better just beware
Of a man named leroy brown

Now leroy more than trouble
You see he stand bout six foot four
All the downtown ladies call him treetop lover
All the mens just call him sir

And its bad, bad leroy brown
The baddest man in the whole damn town
Badder than old king kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog"

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:28 PM

Denton, I went years without them and was a complete f'ing mess. For some people, benzos and therapy are the answer. Not for everyone, but for some.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:30 PM

But Biff, I love Dan Fogelberg (may he rest in peace!). When I first got a cd player my first cd purchase was his double cd "The Innocent Age." I've damn near worn that thing out! Thank God for digital copies!

How about some Oasis?

"Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

Backbeat the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels
The way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk along are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would
Like to say to you
I don't know how

Because maybe
You're gonna be the one who saves me ?
And after all
You're my wonderwall"

"do most of you guys take anti- anxiety pills when you feel stressed/anxious?"

I was with some travel writer friends in Cairo once when we found out you could buy valium over-the-counter. Being writers, artificial stimulants were de riguer, and we bought about as much as we could afford! They were cool, but really I don't remember any particularly lasting impact.

Posted by: East New York at March 25, 2009 3:45 PM

I have nothing against the oldies but goodies, I just don't listen to too many of them these days unless they're on the radio.

I know that song! I liked them. I've been listening to David Byrne's new record with Brian Eno. I like some of those songs - like this one.

LIFE IS LONG

Ev'rybody says that the living is easy
I can barely see ‘cause my head's in the way
Tigers walk behind me- they are to remind me that
I'm lost- but I'm not afraid

Soul to soul- A kiss and a sigh
Sawed in half- by the passage of time
Halfway home- from a window you see
Chains and bars- but I am still free

People on the outside- I remember sweet times
This old rose- is always in bloom
Ev'ryone is happy- to be a baby daddy
Stone love- with nothing to lose

Life is long- if you give it way
So stay, don't go- ‘cause I'm fading away
Soul to soul- between you and me
Chain me down- but I am still free

Now I can say- those three little words
And ev'ry day- I'm dreaming a world
Soul to soul- a kiss and a sigh
Holding back- the waters outside.

Life is long- if you give it way
So stay, don't go- ‘cause I'm fading away
Soul to soul- between you and me
Chain me down- but I am still free

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 3:47 PM

Ok Cobble...I'll get slightly more current again - this song makes me happy for some ridiculous reason!

Gwen Stefani...

"Let me hear you say, this shit is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
this shit is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Again, this shit is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S
This shit is bananas
B-A-N-A-N-A-S

A few times I've been around that track
So it's not just gonna happen like that
Cause I ain't no hollaback girl
I ain't no hollaback girl "

"What is CBT denton?

"nasty side effects, one of which is a propensity to experience the symptoms for which the drug was prescribed, times ten."

CH, it's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. No drugs.

Benzos are a nightmare for many people, maybe not all. I speak from experience, and mine was relatively benign, compared to some others. For more info, see below. For some reason benzos were more heavily prescribed in the UK, hence they had bigger problems that were noted earlier.

http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/

Snappy, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with therapy, on the contrary. But benzos can be seriously bad. I'd be very careful, especially if you feel a need at any time to increase your dose or add multiple benzos.

Posted by: denton at March 25, 2009 3:52 PM

I understand, Denton. I only take a very small dose when I'm in full blown panic attack mode. I try to get through them sans medication, but sometimes it's too severe and can't be done. I have my dr. give them to me only 10 or so at a time so I can't just pop them like candy figuring there are plenty more in the bottle. I have a family history of drug and alcohol addiction so being careful with it is my #1 rule.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 3:56 PM

"LOL, Cobble. I am indeed an old soul, but, yes, I do like newer music as well..."

Snappy, by newer you mean a song released in 1995? :-)
I love that song too. I met Noel Gallagher in the Hugo Boss store on 5th Avenue a few years ago. He's quite short.

Biff, guilty as charged :) I do like a lot of current rap, r&b, pop, rock, but my heart stays with the old stuff. There is something to be said about singing a love song or telling a story without cursing etc. Why say "I wanna hit dat" when you could say "Reunited and it feels so good". :)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 4:20 PM

Funny Oasis are from a couple of miles away from where I grew up (and even closer to where the chicken is from originally). I was never a huge fan of them musically but was always good to see local bands doing well.

Posted by: etson at March 25, 2009 4:21 PM

I need a dinner recommendation. The other day I baked some chicken (seasoned with kosher salt, pepper and sage) in olive oil with chunks of fresh garlic. I tried it over pasta with olive oil and cheese - it was gross. I'm looking for something else to do with it. A good friend of mine brought me some true balsamic vinegar from the Mediterranean. I'm wondering if the chicken would be good with pasta with some of the balsamic drizzled over it. Does that sound like a good combo, or another potential yuck-fest? Ideas?

A jealousy joke for you, BRG:

When Adam stayed out very late for a few nights, Eve became upset. "You're running around with other women," she charged.
"You're being unreasonable," Adam responded. "You're the only woman on earth." The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by someone poking him in the chest.
It was Eve. "What do you think you're doing?" Adam demanded.
"Counting your ribs," said Eve.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:39 PM

I was thinking it would be good over the chicken.

1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
a Tbsp. Brown sugar
a little squeeze of O.J. if you have a zester I'd say add some orange zest.

Cook down the balsamic with the sugar, and squeeze of o.j. in a small saucepan until it thickens.

You can play with the ingredients to taste.

Cut the chicken in strips and toss.

Let's follow DIBS lead and go Asian...

Got any veggies? Shred the chicken and make a quick stir fry? Soy sauce, celery, onion, carrot, other veg. Maybe a tad it of red wine vinegar, garlic, and uhm...what else?

Or curry powder?

A little bit of me and a whole lot of you
Add a dash of starlight and a dozen roses, too
Then let it rise for a hundred years or two
And thats the recipe for making love

It doesnt need sugar cause its already sweet
It doesnt need an oven cause its got a lot of heat
Just add a dash of kisses to make it all complete
And thats the recipe for making love

And if youve made it right youll know it
Its not like anything youve made before
And if youve made it wrong youll know it
cause it wont keep you coming back for more

I didnt get it from my grandmas book upon the shelf
I didnt get it from a magical and culinary elf
No, a little birdie told me you cant make it by yourself

OMG Snappy...4:45
My wedding song!
You're back in my good graces.

I love Harry Connick Jr. He's in my 'sing in the bathtub while drinking champagne' lineup :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:50 PM

We don't have a song :(

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 4:50 PM

THL, what was your wedding song?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:50 PM

I don't know what a Brad is, but for you Biff, anything :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:50 PM

Who did that song THL/Snappy?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 4:51 PM

DIBS, what is your bedding song?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:51 PM

Wow, THL, you're answering my questions before I ask them.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:51 PM

Snappy, Brad is Jill's gay husband.
I want you to be my lesbian wife.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:52 PM

"DIBS, what is your bedding song?"

Shake your Bon Bon

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 4:53 PM

Brad is Jill Zarin's gay husband on RHWNY.

He does everything for her. Redecorates, picks her clothes, does her makeup, attends parties that her husband has no interest in going with her to.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 4:54 PM

Cobble, what song? My 4:45 is Harry Connick Jr., Biff and I channeled the Stones.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:54 PM

Re-write:

Shake your Won Ton

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:54 PM

You got it Biff!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:54 PM

Biff...believe it or not, I did have a "wedding" of sorts back in Chicago in 1990, yes, 1990. My PR boyfriend and I (we'd known each other for 11 years and were always on and off) finally had a ceremony. We had the Grand ballroom of the Belmont Hotel, a 9 piece orchestra and about 150 guests. Open bar, sit down dinner of chicken marsala. It was a real hoot and the talk of the town way back then. We had a three tier wedding cake with two guys on the top.

After we split up my best friend told me "We'll I told you so but it sure was a hell of a party."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 4:55 PM

LOL at Biff's 4:54!!!!! Shake your won ton - ROFLMAO!!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:55 PM

Biff, what about you? Song?

We didn't have a traditional wedding so it never occurred to us to pick a song.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 4:55 PM

Snappy, I guess our wedding song will be "The Girl is Mine"

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 4:56 PM

Oh, gosh, Biff. Your 4:54 deserves the crown! I'm passing it on. I have tears in my eyes from the laughter.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:56 PM

Ah Harry Connick - thanks!

Shake it, shake it

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now
Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now, show 'em how we do it now

Let show the world we can dance
Bad enough to strut our stuff
The music gives us a chance
We do more out on the floor

Groovin' loose or heart to heart
We put in motion every single part
Funky sounds wall to wall
We're bumpin' booties, havin' us a ball, y'all

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now
Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now

We got the rhythm tonight
All the rest know we're the best
Our shadows crash in the light
Twistin', turnin', we keep burnin'

Shake it high or shake it low
We take our bodies where they wanna go
Feel that beat, never stop
Oh, hold me tight, spin me like a top

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now
Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now

There's nothing more that I'd like to do
Than take the floor and dance with you
Keep dancin', let's keep dancin'

Shake it, shake it
Shake it, shake it

Groovin' loose or heart to heart
We put in motion every single part
Funky sounds wall to wall
We're bumpin' booties, havin' us a ball, y'all

Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah
Show 'em how we do it now
Shake your groove thing, shake your groove thing, yeah, yeah

Show 'em how we do it now, yeah
Shake it
Show 'em how we do it now, yeah
Shake it, shake it

Shake it
Doo, doo, doo, whoa
Shake it
Doo, doo, doo, whoa

Shake your groove thing
Shake your groove thing

Show 'em how we do it now, let's get on down
Show 'em how we do it now, show 'em how we do it now, ooh
Ooh
Show 'em how we do it now, shake your groove thing

Shake it, shake it
Shake it, shake it, a bumpin' booty, now
Shake it, shake it
Shake it, shake it, a little freaky now
Shake it, shake it
A shake it, shake it, a do it to it y'all

Will any of you single women marry my Mexican bf to make him legal???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 4:56 PM

Yes, Biff, that song would be appropriate for us! Either that or "Dude Looks Like A Lady!"

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 4:57 PM

OMG BIFF- Shake your WON-TON. Brilliant.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 4:59 PM

Snappy, thanks but you look much better in gold! Actually, I'm sure you look much better than me in any colour.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 5:01 PM

If there is money involved, sign me up Dave! Seriously though, if he is in NYC, send him to Barst & Mukamal on Park Ave. They are the absolute best when it comes to immigration. And, it's no mickey mouse operation over there.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 5:01 PM

I know someone that did that once, what's the risk associated?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 5:01 PM

I've shaken a few won-tons in my life.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 5:02 PM

"Biff, what about you? Song?"

THL, it was Eric Clapton's Change the World. Love this song:

If I could reach the stars I'd pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart so you could see the truth
That this love I have inside is everything it seems
But for now I find it's only in my dreams

CHORUS:
That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world

If I could be king even for a day
I'd take you as my queen I'd have it no other way
And our love will rule in this kingdom we have made
Till then I'd be a fool wishin' for the day

CHORUS:
That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world
Baby if I could change the world

- GUITAR SOLO -

CHORUS:
That I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You will think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world
Baby if I could change the world
Baby if I could change the world

Deportation, fine, jail. It can get really ugly.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 5:04 PM

Gotta run - see ya!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 25, 2009 5:04 PM

Oh, I should mention Change the World also featured Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 5:05 PM

If I ever get married I plan to have 3 wedding songs: At Last by Etta James, Ribbon In The Sky and For Once In My Life by Stevie Wonder.

For once in my life I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once, unafraid, I can go where life leads me
Somehow I know I'll be strong

For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Oooh Someone warm like you
Would make my dream come true

Yeah yeah yeah

For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it hurt me before
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore

For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it
As long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who needs me

HE He He Hey yeah
ooh baby ooh baby

For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it hurt me before
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore

For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it
Long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who needs me

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 5:06 PM

"Deportation, fine, jail."

Are you talking about what happens when you marry an illegal immigrant or when you date DIBS?

Deportation and then fine and then jail? Wouldn't it be the other way around?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 25, 2009 5:06 PM

Gotta love Babyface :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 5:07 PM

My new favorite lovey-dovey ditty is:

"We don't have a song"

Neither do "we." We don't even like the same music! My bride and I had our first date at Don Shula's restaurant in Miami, so maybe our song is the Miami Dolphins' fight song. If they have one. We got married later on at City Hall in Manhattan. There was no music, only an argument when my cousin, who was the witness, realized he didn't have legal ID.

Posted by: East New York at March 25, 2009 5:07 PM

Our song was "Wind Beneath My Wings."

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 25, 2009 5:08 PM

The deportation and jail goes for the immigrant, though usually just the deportation part (unless you are detained before your deportation date). The fine is for the citizen.

Going to South Carolina for the weekend, see you all Monday.

Yeasayer - 2080
I can't sleep when I think about the times we're living in,
I can't sleep when I think about the future I was born into,
Outsiders dressed up like Sunday morning,
But with no Berlin wall what the hell you gonna do.

It's a New Year,
I'm glad to be here
It's a fresh spring,
So let's sing.

In 2080
I'll surely be dead
So don't look ahead,
Never look ahead.

And the moon shines bright
On the water tonight
So we won't drown
In the summer sound.

If you find me I'll be sitting by the water fountain,
Picket signs, letdowns, meltdown it's Monday morning
But it's alright, it's alright, it's alright, it's alright
It's alright
Cause in no time, they'll be gone I guess I'll still be standing here.

It's a New Year,
I'm glad to be here
It's a fresh spring,
So let's sing.

In 2080
I'll surely be dead
So don't look ahead,
Never look ahead.

And the moon shines bright
On the water tonight
So we won't drown
In the summer sound.

Yeah Yeah we can all grab at the chance and be handsome farmers,
Yeah you can have twenty one sons and be blood when they marry my daughters,
And the pain that we left at the station will stay in a jar behind us.
We can pickle the pain into blue ribbon winners at county contests.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 25, 2009 5:10 PM

Thanks THL!

I just got a call from a client in Tennessee and immediately had to put on the song by the same name by Arrested Development. I love their music.

ENY, maybe your song is Miami by Will Smith or something by the Miami Sound Machine?

"ENY- I got married at city hall in Manhattan too."

Cool! For me, the union has lasted 11 years now, which is about nine years longer than my first marriage, which was a disaster. The first marriage had all of the pomp - big wedding in a church, etc. - but none of the success. This one is working out a lot better.

It's quite possible. Gloria Estefan is a certified goddess down there and Wil Smith is a big shot just about everywhere.

Since I started this thread with the butter / cream cheese spread discussion. I'll think of some other spreadable item to open up with tomorrow.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 25, 2009 5:27 PM

He asked me to marry him, we starting thinking about dates and thought the anniversary of our very first date is coming in 3 weeks. Let's just get married then. So we got married on a Tuesday one year to the day from our first date.

Neither of us wanted a church wedding so it worked out perfect. I'm not a fussy girl when it comes down to it. I wanted a house more than I wanted a blow out so we put our money towards that instead.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 25, 2009 5:28 PM

Yes, I think you did mention it re: One Day At A Time. I'm sure you'll see it when your People magazine subscription arrives. :)
