Nice to see you all last night. Did anyone get lucky???

Off to traffic court this morning. Yay! Great seeing everyone last night. Wish I could have stayed longer. Will check in when I get back from court...

+1 on the hangovers.
Great to meet everyone. You all are good fun online, but much more so in real life.
Posted by: etson at March 20, 2009 9:25 AM
etson, I'm watching how many times you go into the coffee room today!!! :)
For those of you not there last night, estyson and I, it turns out, work on the same floor in this building here in Manhattan. He works for another firm that has offices here. Small world!!!!
Also for all you lame reality TV fans that didn't show up, Simon & wife from Real Housewives of NY showed up!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 9:30 AM
it was great seeing people again (dave youre even a bigger pervert in public than you on the boards! haha) and great meeting new people.
a funny thing that happened to me on my way there that i didnt tell anyone last night cuz i was a little shaken by it, tho i guess i shouldnt be.
i get out at the court street stop of the R train and i saw what i THOUGHT was a frail old elderly woman pulling up a giant roller suitcase so i offered to help her. she was like oh thanks! so im walking up and i realize she is not elderly at all but really young and well rather creepy. then we get to the top and she's like there's another flight after the elevator! im like okay then she says she was going to (some church name here i dont remember the name but it's in brooklyn heights...) i was like oh jeez one of those crazy religious people. she goes off saying they accept everyone of every faith and blah blah blah and that it's the first day of spring (tho i think that's today) and we get out and im dragging her roller suitcase up the stairs and out of no where i totally realize a giant pentagram medallion around her neck! she was SUCH a total devil worshipper!!!! and she mentioned she was a 'night priestess' or nigh something.. and then i give her the suitcase and she called me some funny name that im blanking on now.
i touched a devil worshipper's vernal equinox supply case!!! baaaah! scary!
i have no problem with devil worshippers, rosemary's baby rocked, but youd be shocked how many of them are in this city and have their own churches and stuff. i feel like this topic came up a while back where i mentioned in some thread about them?
oh well,
last night was fun. i didnt wake up with a hangover or anything yay!
so did anyone talk to the E list celebs from real housewives? were they nice?
outside when i was taking a smoking break one of those fratty dudes that were in there was talking to someone and was like "i really want to find out who this group of people is..." it took every ounce of restraint for me not to go up to him and tell him it was a Furries meeting (if you dont know the furries are they are people who dress up in full animal costumes and role play in various ways... creepy teepee's fer sure.)

"+1 on the hangovers."
Add me to that list, please. I am off work today but had to log in to thank everyone who attended yesterday. It was a great crowd and hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves. And a very special thanks to the celebrity guests Alex and Simon (99 Luftballoons) who were wonderful sports and incredibly friendly to all of us. Last shout out is to Baby wasder, who was the youngest and unquestionably most adorable of all the attendees.

I got lucky! Better Half came home with me! Apparently someone expressed interest in MY BH!
Scene: BH standing at bar ordering a coke. Woman standing nearby spies his name tag " cobblehiller's Better Half". She offers to be his other half! He answered - that would make 3 halves. And she said, Oh, are you taken?
3 glasses of wine is one glass too much apparently for this old lady! And I'm completely hoarse!
How 'bout you DIBS, did you 'get lucky'?
Glad you appeared etson!

I missed baby wasder! WAHHH!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 9:35 AM
I don't watch that TV show but was talking to a girl not in our group at the bar & she FREAKED when she saw that guy Simon. Told her to introuduce herself to him but she got 'starstruck'.
Posted by: etson at March 20, 2009 9:35 AM
"Small world!!!!"
But I would hate to paint it.
"so did anyone talk to the E list celebs from real housewives? were they nice?"
I spoke to them for quite a while and really enjoyed our discussion. It was fascinating for a reality show junky like me. Mr. and Mrs. B also conversed with them for quite awhile.
Rob, I'm sorry we couldn't chat more. It always seems like there's never enough time to get to spend with people at these gatherings. But I had a blast and hope everyone else did too.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 9:36 AM
Hey guys!!
It was great meeting all of you. We had a blast and look forward to seeing and chatting with youse (this is where "you" plural is needed) again soon.

I got a phone number from that hot latin guy in the white jacket who was not with our group.
Better yet though I rode home with Montrose Morris & Amzi Hill. Never been in such illustrious company before and I dated an architect once!!!!

Meant to take a poll yesterday...any BSG fans there? Tonite is the season finale...wail...anyone know of a BSG-viewing party anywhere?

What's BSG???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 9:44 AM

Thanks cmu. It was so nice to see you again and I'm glad you made it past the bouncer once again!

We had a great time talking to MM and Amzi Hill, not sure if I was making any sense at that point, though! : P
So glad so many people came out! Snappy and THL, you were missed! : )
BRG, wasder, sorry we didn't get to chat more - good to SEE you.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 9:46 AM
Whats BSG!!!!!? Only the best sci-fi (or SyFy) show on TV for years. Well, if I still have your attention, it really IS a great show, more of a "space opera" (NY Times) than a sci-fi-alien-ugly-mask-monster thingie. On for 4 years, today is the end (and possibly the end of humanity too, the story is about a band of 30000 survivors of a holocaust perpetrated by human-like machines on real humans.)
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 9:46 AM
biff - sorry, not what i meant. actually i'm not worthy of being in your company. wouldnt want to taint the pool. :)
Posted by: goldie at March 20, 2009 9:46 AM
battlestar galactica
it's a remake of an old show that's on sci fi channel. it's really good tho i havent watched this season.

goldie, you'll come to the next one I hope. Too bad you missed it - Alex might have asked you to email her and Simon too. She's my new BFF. I got a couple pics with her using my Blackberry but I won't post them.

I have to give Alex and Simon props for showing up. Yes, it appears that they are real people. Favorable responses to them all around! [I just 'gawked' - didn't speak with them.]

Hi folks;
Thank you Biff for organizing the get-together. This was the first I attended, and I really enjoyed it. I think thanks should also go to Mr. B., whose site ultimately makes this all possible.
I enjoyed meeting everyone, and there is never enough time to chat with everyone. Some random observations:
-In the "looks completely different than I expected" category, my winner is: Biff! I had a completely different image of him. Fear not, Biff - you look much better in real life than I had imagined you.
-In the "looks just like I expected" category, my winner is Bay Ridge Girl, my new best friend. I love BRG's classic Brooklyn accent - took me back to all the folks I grew up with. I told BRG I know her from somewhere, but I can't place where. By the way,BRG: I still cannot believe that you have never been to Gravesend!!! It is only a 2 mile drive down Bay Ridge Parkway!!!
-I was surprised that some posters are more reserved in person than their on-line persona. It seems that Sam's observation was right: for some folks, their on-line persona is an alter ego. Not me (or at least I think so). What you see with me on-line is what you get!
-Speaking of Sam, I was sorry that he and Bxgrl were not there.
-I am happy to report that the right-wing ranks are growing on Brownstoner. We now have 3 people: myself, Christopher and now: Etson! How about that? A 200% increase in a few short months!
I'm off travelling on business for the next two weeks. Hope to post, but if I can't, I'll see you soon.
Posted by: benson at March 20, 2009 9:55 AM
benson, you looked different than I envisioned but I thought you had a very classic, New York look. It was right out of a James Cagney movie. You were really fun to talk to. And thanks for the award for "looks completely different than I expected"!
Mr. B, benson is right. You deserve many thanks for allowing us to use your blog to organize these get togethers and for bringing us together in the first place. And I have to say that Mrs. B is such a warm, outgoing, beautiful person. We met at the last gathering and it is so much fun to talk to her.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 9:52 AM"
You too DIBS (sorry, will call you Dave in real life but has to be DIBS on the interweb)!
So, TV people are real people? Who'da thunk it?
Posted by: the chicken at March 20, 2009 10:03 AM
benson...I told you yesterday that we would discuss dogs here today and not cats. I had an Akita when I lived in Chicago. Here's a story about the most loyal dog in the world. You have to go to Shibuya station and see the statue...
In 1924, Hachikō was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno didn't return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting.
Hachikō was given away after his master's death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. After time, Hachikō apparently realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachikō waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he didn't see his friend among the commuters at the station.
The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Realizing that Hachikō waited in vigil for his dead master, their hearts were touched. They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.
This continued for 10 years, with Hachikō appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station
Hachikō died on March 8, 1935, of filariasis (heartworm). His stuffed and mounted remains are kept at the National Science Museum of Japan in Ueno, Tokyo.
In April 1934, a bronze statue in his likeness was erected at Shibuya Station, and Hachikō himself was present at its unveiling. The statue was recycled for the war effort during World War II. After the war, Hachikō was not forgotten. In 1948 The Society for Recreating the Hachikō Statue commissioned Takeshi Ando, son of the original artist who had since died, to make a second statue. The new statue, which was erected in August 1948, still stands and is an extremely popular meeting spot. The station entrance near this statue is named "Hachikō-guchi", meaning "The Hachikō Exit", and is one of Shibuya Station's five exits.
And I just learned this yesterday....
Hachiko: A Dog's Story, to be released in August 2009, is an American movie starring actor Richard Gere, directed by Lasse Hallström, about Hachikō and his relationship with the professor. The movie is being filmed in Rhode Island, and will also feature actresses Joan Allen and Sarah Roemer. The role of Hachiko, the Akita is played by Forest
Here's the link to see Hachiko's picture and a photo of him today, stuffed, in the museum..

OK...so where's the lurker who showed up and said she had never logged in before??? Scary!!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 10:06 AM
Rob, don't be a shit disturber! :-)
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 10:07 AM
I had a great time, too. I heartily enjoyed reconnecting with those I had met before, and thoroughly enjoyed making new friends. I managed to only have 2 glasses of wine, one of which got spilled, and there was no standing on tables and belting out a drunken rendition of the Habanera from Carmen.
I'm sorry I didn't get to chat with absolutely everyone, but I had a great time. I have to admit, when Biff introduced me to Simon and wife, I stared at him and them blankly, as I had no idea who in the world they were. Simon joined my group later, and was a very interesting man with a lot of world travel and experience. He also loves Brooklyn, and he was a great conversationalist.
I enjoyed reconnecting with Cobblehiller and BH, Biff, DIBS, cmu, wasder and slopefarm, Mr.B (I didn't see Mrs. B until you guys walked out the door), infinite jester, BRG, rob, mopar and Steve, and johnife. I saw, but did not get a chance to speak to Denton and Mrs. D, and Adam Dahill.
I had a great time with my new friends, too: Amzi Hill, Benson, lechacal, Shahn Anderson, etson, sixdaysandcounting, and the anonymous lurker from Carroll Gardens. If I forgot anyone, I'm sorry, I'll probably remember as soon as I post this. I met the chicken, but we never got to talk, and I missed Baby Wasder altogether.
Let's do this again late spring, early summer, and have it where we can go outside. My only complaint last night is that it was too loud, and I had to shout all night. I'm hoarse, too. But it was great!
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 10:07 AM
Graet to see everyone. Had a great time talking with Wasder, Montrose, Amzi, brg, DIBS, cobblehiller and BH, mopar, benson, Biff, Mr. B, Senator street, and many others. I think our ranks were in the 25-30 range. Wanted to chat with denton more but he left early. We do need to make this semi-regular.
Has our silent lurker posted yet today?
Posted by: slopefarm at March 20, 2009 10:07 AM
"OK...so where's the lurker who showed up and said she had never logged in before??? Scary!!!!!!"
She was very sweet. Poor thing - all us regulars surrounded her and were looking at her like she was an alien and we couldn't grasp the concept that someone could just read posts and not have to open their big piehole and chime in.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 10:08 AM
DIBS, although that is on the face of it a very heart-warming story, allow me to play devil's advocate.
If your owner hasn't turned up where you expected after a week then you should learn your lesson. Keeping it up for a decade is just plain obstinate!
Posted by: the chicken at March 20, 2009 10:10 AM
Great to meet you as well, Montrose!
I'll be hitting you up for tips on the best West Indian food places in CH - know there are lots in your neighborhood and it's my favorite cuisine.
Posted by: etson at March 20, 2009 10:11 AM
Donatella! How could I have forgotten you were there? Forgive me, the brain cells are dying by the thousands every day.
I'm going to be glued to the tv for the Battlestar Galactica finale tonight, too. I love that show. They better not have one of those "Dallas" it-was-all-a-dream endings.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 10:13 AM
Yes, yes, let's do it again!
I told Biff I'd be happy to spearhead our next gathering. I'd like to look for a restaurant garden where the ambient noise factor might be lessened.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 10:14 AM
chicken...If someone keep taking the eggs from your nest day after day, then why do you keep laying them??? :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 10:15 AM
And we have to make sure there is going to be more than one bartender!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 10:16 AM
touche DIBS, touche!
Posted by: the chicken at March 20, 2009 10:17 AM
Let's do the next one sooner - maybe in late April?
cobblehiller, I don't mind organizing it again or at least helping you out. I completely agree re: finding a quieter place with outside space. I think it should be in the Clinton Hill area as we seem to get a large number of folks from there, Park Slope, Crown Heights and Bed Stuy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 10:18 AM
definitely the one bartender was a strategic blunder.
Posted by: the chicken at March 20, 2009 10:18 AM
It'll probably have a "through the black/wormhole" to a glorious future ending.
Wait a minute. What show am I talking about? The bleakest in TV-land? No, probably all of humanity will be obliterated.
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 10:18 AM
I truly enjoyed everyone last night. Thanks so much for getting us together Biff. Cobblehiller you made perfect sense all night. I am glad I got to clear up my gender. The ride back I was in really good company thanks MM and DIBS.
Posted by: Amzi Hill at March 20, 2009 10:18 AM
Oh yes, forgot to mention Donatella. Sorry. One of Brownstoner's early adapters.
Posted by: slopefarm at March 20, 2009 10:19 AM
Any time Etson. It's a favorite of mine, too!
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 10:20 AM
"I don't mind organizing it again or at least helping you out."
Excellent Biff, I agree Clinton Hill would be stellar. Sooner would be fun, too.
Oy, DIBS, you are so right, they needed another bartender and a bar back to clean up. The poor bartender was doing everything.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 10:22 AM
Are one of you Brits posting as bobjohn in the Forum in the "Fed Up With 1/8 Inches" post???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 10:23 AM
True, cmu. It's not like there are very many people left, anyway. And only 12 cylon models, more and more of whom seem to be going out airlocks without a space suit every day.
I enjoyed the ride back to the hood with you gentlemen as well. I think it was the first time all night I could actually hear my voice speaking.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 10:25 AM
Yes, another bartender would be a good idea - and one that knows how to make drinks! I had to coach her on how to make a proper Manhattan.
Montrose, sorry I spilled your wine. I owe you one at the next get-together.
Posted by: benson at March 20, 2009 10:25 AM
the chicken, absolutely. I'm going to call the contact at Floyd and mention the bartender issue. It's amazing in times like this to think about how much business they lost due to the slow bar service. They were supposed to have another bartender their much earlier. I don't know why that didn't happen.
Amzi, you win my award for looking nothing like I imagined. It was a pleasure meeting you. You're a fabulous guy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 10:26 AM
DIBS - did that question contain a hidden sexual innuendo?
Posted by: SenatorStreet at March 20, 2009 10:26 AM
"their much earlier" should be "there much earlier"
I blame the hangover!
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 10:28 AM
UGH AM SO MAD I DIDN'T MAKE IT OUT LAST NIGHT
Had a drama here at work and didn't leave until after 8!!!
Am so sorry - I wish I could have enjoyed you all and that Alex/Simon were there too - omG crazzzzyyy!!
DIBS - I adore Hachiko, he's one of my favorite breeds
Please host another night like SOON!
Posted by: gemini10 at March 20, 2009 10:29 AM
Senator...there aren't many things in this world that don't have a hidden sexual innuendo (do you know why the Edsel was a flop?). I think I correctly figured out the posters frustration with inches in my last post. :)

Great to meet everyone last night on my first time out with you all! I have to second what benson said about some people being more reserved in real life, which was an interesting phenomenon. I liked everyone I met - MM, dibs, brg, biff, slopefarm, benson, cobblehiller, the chicken, mr b himself, rob, wasder, mopar and her bf, and many, many others. Sorry if I don't list you all here, I was a bit drunk. Still a bit hung over but my students seem to be learning something this morning anyway...maybe. Unfortunately I missed the anonymous lurker because a former student of mine walked in around 11:00 - she's in law school now and *that* made me feel like I'm getting up there in years.

I am so sorry I missed it!!!!! As it was I spent all evening glued to the computer working on this @##$%&^*(*#%# project! But I went downstairs after certain people dropped my drunken sot of a LL off and got a blow by blow description of the fun. Next time for sure! So many people I wanted to meet- benson, cm, BRG....I could go on. :-(
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 10:43 AM
Thanks Biff you know in my head I had you as a guy twice your age. I had no idea why I was thinking that. You seem like really good person as well as everyone else I met last night. Biff, Benson, MM and Cobblehiller you guys really get the Brooklyn "back in the day" respect from me... Also Mr.B thanks for everything.

And how is it that you get to post mid-morning then?
Posted by: the chicken at March 20, 2009 10:46 AM
It was interesting. Mostly a pretty normal and easy going crowd and fun to meet. Baby Wasder was a great addition. I had no idea what this housewives show was until the blond woman who is in it explained it to me (I sort of felt bad about the whole thing). After meeting a couple of the attendees their choice of a computer as a primary social outlet now makes more sense, but overall an enjoyable bunch.

I want to make one statement about the idea of a garden party. If this venue induces folks to bring their cats, then I'm not coming!!

So did the What show up?
Posted by: Prodigal_Son at March 20, 2009 10:49 AM
Oh, what a night! Lots of fun, with great people.
Enjoyed seeing some familiar ones and meeting new ones.
I didn't meet or chat with the celebrities, Alex and Simon. I have no idea who they are and wasn't star struck in the least.
So who had the most to drink last night? I don't think anyone was overtly drunk.
Yes, Benson you're my new best friend regardless of your Brownstoner persona.
"In the "looks just like I expected" category, my winner is Bay Ridge Girl, my new best friend."
Huh??? People on here expect me to have big hair, wear plastic pumps and dress like a tramp. Benson clear my name please.
And Benson you were smokin' hot in your Borsalino, very dignified.
Biff, thanks for organizing.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 11:06 AM
I thoguht that Simon guy from the reality show was quite gregarious (although quite drunk), but did have a weird hint of "I think I'm famous so I need to let everyone know that they know I'm famous". He was almost too gregarious, if ya know what I mean. Is that just a false first impression?

FDIC Closes Sale of Indymac Federal Bank, Pasadena, California
http://www.fdic.gov/news/news/press/2009/pr09042.html
Get this part: IndyMac Federal sustained losses of $2.6 billion in the fourth quarter 2008 due to deterioration in the real estate market. The total estimated loss to the Deposit Insurance Fund is $10.7 billion. No further payments on receivership claims for uninsured funds from former IndyMac Bank, F.S.B. will be distributed as a result of this transaction.
See why everyone is real nervous with Bank of America (LMMFAO) and Citibank! I hope you start planing the next Brownstoner get together right now! Had a great time and thanks to Biff for organizing.
I was not in too much trouble coming home a bit tipsy ..good thing do not have to stumble far. Glad to see everyone could drink as well as they comment. And amazing how so many opinionated people (myself included) could be so nice to each other. At least to their faces - who knows when backed turned.
Sorry didn't see the 'celebs' not that I would know anything about that show anyway.

I am not shown in the photos.
Posted by: benson at March 20, 2009 11:23 AM
When did the camera come out? I didn't see anyone taking pictures. Anyway, I had a blast. Just couldn't stay as long as I wanted. I did however leave my most favorite scarf (one I would be devastated about losing) and therefore had to return to the party. My wife said had had enough of kid duty for the night so I was obliged to bring Baby Wasder, who handled the whole thing like a champ. Wish I could have hung around a bit more but such is the life of a father with a baby.
Benson, you actually win my "didn't expect you to look like that" award. Loved your hat and overall sartorial presentation. Everyone was in great form and I enjoyed myself immensely. Thanks Biff for organizing and thanks Mr B for creating this kooky cyber clubhouse for us.
Simon and Alex were awesome to meet and great sports, what with all the ribbing they have endured around here. I admired their spirit and enjoyed talking to both of them alot.
In re Clinton Hill suggestions for the next gathering...Rope on myrtle between CLinton and Vanderbilt is pretty cool, Brooklyn Public at Dekalb and Vanderbilt would also be a cool choice (though technically in Ft Greene it is right on the border).

Posted by: wasder at March 20, 2009 11:35 AM
DIBS, what do you think? Should we offer to post captions if ROTW posts a picture of himself first?
What, in all honesty, it was much like last time. A bunch of people showed up and had a nice time talking with each other about many topics. A fun evening and your presense would have been an enjoyable surprise. More people than you think expressed the thought that it would be nice if you showed up. I look forward to seeing you dance at the next one, no matter what the state of the economy or the brownstone market.
Regarding yesterday's post, you are right about Ford telling NYC to drop dead in '74-75. That is because there was no will in the Fed. Govt. to bail out NYC for its financial crisis resulting largely from NYC's own mismanagement of its debt (not deficit, actual debt). NYC's flirtation with bankruptcy far outstripped other municipalities' struggles with cash flow at that time because overrelaince on bond issues and years of debt mismanagement put NYC deep into a hold of its own making. Private disinvestment and abandonment of large parts of the City contributed, but was not the sole cause.
While cities and states around the country are running budget deficits, NYC's current deficit is nothing like California's and NYC does not now have the problems with its bond debt that it did back then. Even though NYC is hard hit by the problems on Wall Street, the City is managed afar better now than then and is much better positioned to weather the storm than it was 30 years ago. I would be curious if you have specific data about NYC that suggests otherwise. We are also a long way from economic conditions that would support an epidemic of landlord arson to unload failing buildings, as was the case in the 70s.

Sorry to be party pooper here. I didn't make it to the event but am I the only one here who is NOT impressed by Simon and Alex? To me, watching superficial, pretentious assholes is hard enough on TV. To then add the element to real life and actually get to ~meet~ them? Ugh.

Eh Slopey, the economic times sucked in 70's! "That is because there was no will in the Fed." Yes there was Ford told NYC to "Get Bent"!
"While cities and states around the country are running budget deficits, NYC's current deficit is nothing like California's and NYC does not now have the problems with its bond debt that it did back then."

The questions with this spot is will they have enough variety of drink to satisfy our thirsty crew (mostly wine and beer, though rum is mentioned above) and will they stay open late enough. They usually close at 11 but I bet they would stretch that if we were all in there spending our dough. You might want to make an inquiry on the phone or I could do it as it is about a 7 iron away from my house.

I have never watched a "reality TV" show except one: "Blind Date". For some reason, I found "Blind Date" to be great fun, particularly the captions/comments the producers used to impose on the bottom of the screen as the action was progressing. It was sort of like the way Biff inserts witty one-liners into many Brownstoner threads.

“Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.
And the most British thing of all? Suspicion of anything foreign”.

I also enjoyed Blind Date, but detest reality shows in general.
It's funny, the guy who used to do the captions and other graphic stuff for Blind Date directed the video for my rap group (back in the day when I wanted to be cool)

Something I noticed last night - when wasder came in he tipped/doffed his hat to the group and joined the circle. What I noticed just then watching him say hello was how nearly everyone was a little older than I'd expected, older as in wiser and more mature. I used to get lost fairly quickly in some of the more specific banter that goes on in some of the HOTD and COTD threads - now I see why.
Later I also reflected how lucky Brooklyn is to have committed people investing their lives and souls into their neighborhoods and communities.

Hello all! Sounds like I missed quite the party last night. Any debaucherous details to share? :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 1:59 PM
Hi Snappy!
Not really in my case...although BH almost got picked up!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:01 PM
"Later I also reflected how lucky Brooklyn is to have committed people investing their lives and souls into their neighborhoods and communities."
infinitejester, very nice sentiment (although you didn't mention that Brooklyn also has a number of people who should be committed, especially around here).
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 2:02 PM
Hiya Cobble! Were you ready to fight for your man? :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:04 PM
O.k., spill it, who are the people in the pics.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 20, 2009 2:04 PM
THL...I'm the old guy in the lower left.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 2:07 PM
Seriously Dave? That's you? Not at all what I pictured.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:10 PM
Yup...and in the lower right of course is Simon from Real Housewives.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 2:11 PM
"a number of people who should be committed"
Hmph, speak for yourself Biff!
You bet I was, Snappy! Anyone that knows me, knows I love, adore and cherish my man!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:12 PM
Snappy...no one will turn out to be what you pictured!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 2:12 PM
dibs- yes, I thought so too. :-)
aside to biff - didn't you mean obnoxious jerk grammar police? or obnoxious jerk morality police? We need you to be clear because there are options.
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 2:13 PM
I don't think we should point out people in case they don't want to be named. Although everyone seems to know Simon and DIBS clearly doesn't have an issue with identifying himself...even in 1970s pics.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 2:14 PM
Who are the other folks in the pics?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:14 PM
Awww, come on! Inquiring minds wanna know who is who!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:15 PM
No, I wasn't going to. Except that blurt out earlier when the pics first hit!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 2:15 PM
"I don't think we should point out people in case they don't want to be named. "
I agree. They can name themselves or not, as they please.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:15 PM
"Inquiring minds wanna know who is who!"
Then you have to SHOW UP! : )
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:16 PM
Snappy, you were too shy to go so you should appreciate that other might not want to be identified.
cobblehiller, TRUE DAT!
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 2:18 PM
CGU, welcome. Nice to meet you last night. Glad you survived the interrogation.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 2:18 PM
:( waaaahhhh! Ok, if I'm employed by the time the next one rolls around, I'll be there :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:21 PM
Snappy, you better be there no matter what. We'll buy you drinks if you're not employed.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 2:23 PM
There's a Horror Show Friday...what the heck are we all doing over here??
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 20, 2009 2:24 PM
Thanks Biff, but I have a rule - no work, no play!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:24 PM
I will tell you that I am not in any of the pics. [Thank heavens!]
"We'll buy you drinks if you're not employed."
Oui, I told her that yesterday, and she chickened out anyway... : P
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:27 PM
Rules are meant to be broken.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 2:28 PM
"...although BH almost got picked up!"-ch
Hmmm, guess I'm not putting out the available vibe yet.
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 2:30 PM
I can see it now...my broke ass standing around asking folks..."so, wanna buy me a drink?" LOL!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:30 PM
Wow, a little respect please for those of who didn't attend for WHATEVER reason.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 20, 2009 2:31 PM
CMU...are those initials your name, or does it by chance stand for Carnegie Mellon University?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:31 PM
Yeah, like K-Fed's party! Right, THL? :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:34 PM
exactly
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 20, 2009 2:36 PM
Sorry I m issed meeting you cmu :-(Although my respect for you has somewhat slipped after MM told me the computer story. :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 2:38 PM
"Hmmm, guess I'm not putting out the available vibe yet"
cmu, BH just stood at the bar and ordered a coke and a woman started chatting him up!
Once you 'put the vibe out', you will have no problem whatsoever!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:39 PM
biff- the Enrique Norten thread is turning out to be even more fun that Friday Horror show
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 2:41 PM
".my broke ass standing around asking folks..."so, wanna buy me a drink?""
That won't happen, because your friends will offer to buy you a drink first. : )
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 2:41 PM
Cobble, you are a sweetie :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:44 PM
snappy, Why Carnegie Mellon Univ of all places? I guess that answers your question sort of...
ch- thanks for the endorsement! 17 yrs of non-vibing takes a little getting over...
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 2:46 PM
Hey all:
How in da FUCK did all of you with a hangover get drunk? Did you have something in your back pocket? Man, we couldn't get a second glass of wine for nothing, which is why we abruptly left at 8PM. In this environment, I don't feel I should have to beg people to take my money!
But Biff, that's just a minor gripe and we really appreciate you setting this up. Sorry for butting in when you were chatting with the celeb chick, I don't watch TV so I didn't recognize her.
Hey What, you forget about why we had these parties. The first was three months from when you predicted total meltdown. This was a 'still fucking around' party to show that we 're all still here, still paying the mortgage, and still fuckin' around! Especially DIBS it appears.
Too bad you didn't come.
Nice seeing you all, hope we can do it again soon.
Posted by: denton at March 20, 2009 2:46 PM
bxgrl, you know your ELL never tells the truth, don't you? (sorry, MM)...
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 2:46 PM
Yes, CMU, that does answer the question! I went to college in Pittsburgh so whenever I see the initials CMU I automatically think Carnegie Mellon University!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:49 PM
Well, better than the communist whatever I've been likened to...oops time to take son to tennis...have a good weekend y'all.
Posted by: cmu at March 20, 2009 2:52 PM
cmu- I would tell her that but she is already threatening to raise my rent because I referred to her as a drunken sot this morning in the OP. Some people are just so touchy! :-)
And now I am expected to go downstairs and bring lunch too. *cue up sad violin music*
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 2:54 PM
back off snappy! I saw him first! I had benson until BRG got her borsalino loving claws into him.
Posted by: bxgrl at March 20, 2009 2:56 PM
Humph, cmu. I expected frakkin' more from about the only other BSG fan here.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 20, 2009 2:56 PM
LOL! Bxgirl, remember, I'm as gay as the day is long! My interest in the male species couldn't be more pure!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 2:59 PM
My hangover derived from my attendance of a post-party at Stoned Crow. I left at 8:25 after two.
Posted by: infinitejester at March 20, 2009 3:02 PM
"What I noticed just then watching him say hello was how nearly everyone was a little older than I'd expected, older as in wiser and more mature."
Thanks Inifinite--although it is taking me some getting used to being the older, wiser one. How did this happen?
Posted by: wasder at March 20, 2009 3:04 PM
"Hey What, you forget about why we had these parties."
Oh no Denton, I never forgot the The What gives out Massive PWNING last October and everyone went forward with that party.
"This was a 'still f***** around' party to show that we 're all still here, still paying the mortgage, and still f*****' around!
Good Denton that's why I want to plan the next party at The Outpost (if there are still in business) around October '09. Oh I might show up for the one..
Hey what's up Au Du Monde (or whatever) on Fulton and Clinton?? They have been closed all week??? And the other resturant across the street is closed during the day!
Here retards I want you to suck this one down. While you was having fun the other nations of this planet is getting ready to shove a steel I-beam up our asses!
China backs talks on dollar as reserve -Russian source

MOSCOW, March 19 (Reuters) - China and other emerging nations back Russia's call for a discussion on how to replace the dollar as the world's primary reserve currency, a senior Russian government source said on Thursday. Russia has proposed the creation of a new reserve currency, to be issued by international financial institutions, among other measures in the text of its proposals to the April G20 summit published last Monday.

Dave if they can get OPEc in on this I think the US will go to war. Remember Saddam tried to accept Euros for Oil and we told him to cut that crap out, well the hanging was wonderful. If anyone think that nations will continue to buy US debt with the crackhead polices by The Fed, we are in a world of hurt. Keep dreaming...

boofer...like I told Snappy up above, no one will look like what you imagine!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 3:41 PM
Yeah..you look much more debonair! I don't think people even know if I'm a man or a woman. Actually I don't think people think anything about me since I'm mostly a lurker..
Posted by: boofer at March 20, 2009 3:43 PM
boofer...actually I thought the tall guy standing next to me in that pic was a woman before I met him. That certainly was dispelled quite fast!!!

DIBS is extraordinarily debonair. This is true.

The question is: Is the handsome man in question straight or gay & attached or single?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 20, 2009 3:55 PM
He's straight anyway but an extremely nice guy and lives in Bed Stuy.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 3:56 PM

Untrue.
Although I was a little goggled!

wasder, dear, we're not supposed to identify people unless they self-identify!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 4:02 PM
So, at these soirees do you all talk about real estate and finance or what?
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 20, 2009 4:04 PM
buckfast...problem is there aren't many places to go. I've been to Augie's on Fulton and Essence down on Troy & Atlantic. Essence has some big screen TVs for games and a lot of decent food. If I go up to broadway to get some Mexican food (Taco Poblano) I usually get a car back anyway..too far and too much cerveza!!! I never got to that place on Malcolm X that was supposed to be good...corner of McDonough I think...it closed.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 4:07 PM
If I just want a dew drinks and no TV I go to Peaches or Solomon's Porch...usually know people there too.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 4:09 PM
Snappy...we don't talk about most of that stuff. More neighborhood and social activity talk.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 4:10 PM
Want to say a belated thanks to the welcome we received last night. Sorry we had to duck out but Parent/Teacher Conference called but we did come back after that 20 minute hiatus.
Alex & I are the last people to be offended by comments made about us. A few minutes of our lives picked out at random, while making good TV, doesn't give anyone a complete and total picture of who we are.
Those of you who watch the show might like to know that Aaron McDonald, the architect we worked with on our renovation, is also on Brownstoner and that's how I found him.
And yes DIBS we had had a minor leak in our extension which we reckon was built around the early 1910's. When we stripped it all back we realized that it was actually two extensions; first built only half way across the lot line and then later added to extend the full 22'.
If you interested we blog each episode of the show at http://www.McCordvanKempen.com and we're also posting a renovation blog each week as the work rolls out on the show.
We might just see you all at the next drinks too!
Simon

"So, at these soirees do you all talk about real estate and finance or what?"
'What', and what!
Some of everything, really. It's like any cocktail party but with a slight bent towards real estate/Brooklyn.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 4:13 PM
Simon...glad you're thick skinned. Posters here become a lot more friendly towards people after they've met them in real life. I suspect the "celebrity status" lets people believe than can hurl anything at you with reckless abandon. Good luck with the renovations.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 20, 2009 4:17 PM
no dave.u know where i live.but i must say,i do like bed stuy alot.went to a bunch of parties there when i was in high school, back in the early 90s.

Simon, I hope you and Alex had a chance to go through the (mostly) complimentary comments above. I think we all were very pleasantly surprised not only that you showed up but at how personable and engaging you both were as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to speak with you both at great length and would love it if you could attend the next gathering. Alex asked me to email you both, but I can't recall the address she gave me. Shoot me an email at biffchampion@yahoo.com.

Hey Mr. B...here's my pet peeve. At the bottom of the landing page, it says "Previous Week." But, that's just the link to older posts, not ones that are from the actual previous week. Could you please change to something else? it annoys me.

"I thought handles were cool no?"
Hm, I suppose the handles might be ok, but I thought we were holding off totally? I maybe wrong...
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 20, 2009 4:26 PM
I think we should hold off totally on naming people unless people want to identify themselves, even if we are just using handles.

Okay, MM, is this enough (non-fans can skip):
The most important thing I see happening is Desperation---to Finish---the Show. Look at this entire season, one melodrama after another, it could be the National Enquirer Season:
Anastasia Kills Self After Lovely Date With Ex-Husband!
Kara Finds Her Own Body, Burns It, Tells Nobody!
Leoben Vanishes After Kara Turns Her Wrath On Him!
Tom Murders Entire Quorum In Fit Of Pique!
Bill Drinks! Bill Drinks Again! Bill Drinks...
Boomer Screws Unsuspecting Husband of Twin!
I went back to view a few random eps from past seasons that I have recorded, and am struck by how much more nuanced the writing is (with some obvious exceptions like Blackmarket (?)) and how much more beliveable the characters are. Now we seem to hurrying along to the finale, lurching from one dramatic moment to the next, throwing aside any continuity the characters had. Maybe everybody will die in a blaze of glory at the end.
Just in this last episode (2 weeks ago):
Kara's endless interaction with Slick...too long, too slow to resolution (which itself was telegraphed anyway) and, basically unnecessary. There's enough issues unresolved with her, her Viper and her body that introducing another element is plain stupid. And the FF coming over didn't add anything either. What exactly are they doing anyway? Leaving to form their Utopian society? Not leaving? Trying to make Anders better? No, not if Cottle ridicules them?
Adama's whiny "she put two bullets in me!" (cue the violins)...besides the fact that this "she" was probably not the same as the other "she", personal revenge is hardly something the head of the fleet should imply in a legal situtation. Practically everybody else has been forgiven (oh, I'm forgetting Gaeta, but that would raise another rant), why not Boomer?...I get it, she's another plot device in the making. I've come to hate this Adama, the sodden drunk who's using up all that scarce toothpaste and who, in any realistic situation, would've been placed on "administrative leave" and someone competent taken over.
Roslin is even worse. That scene where she humiliated the Chief was SO unnecessary and cruel. She and/or Adama could've easily taken the Chief aside and explained their motivations, such as they are. Come to think of it, the whole being tried-for-treason thing is yet another plot device which sets off the entire second part of this farce. I thought Roslin would be a tower of strength after that great scene of her throwing away her pills, running through the halls and defying her cancer a couple of eps ago, but here she is, all wishy-washy and bitchy again. It's as if the writers were kept in isolation from each other so they don't know what the others did with the characters.
I won't even begin on Ellen, that other temporary Tower-of-Strengh who devolved into Raging Jealous Bitch last time and now is Super Supportive Spouse (maybe I'm reading too much into her only line). These radical flip-flops do not show complexity of character; it's Multiple Stereotype Syndrome.
Boomer: How much better would it have been if Boomer had been the driver of the situation and had planned to kidnap Hera all along, instead of the way it was portrayed, with all that ambiguity as to her motivations? Chief could've probably known nothing about the extradition; his feelings for her kept hidden until it was signed and Boomer somehow got him to the brig and told him. In his shock at her imminent trial/death, he'd been that much more receptive to the Cylon projection she'd deliberately devised; it would also have been a better opportunity to get with the mandatory naked-Grace-Park scene if she'd frakked the Chief there, thereby eliminating all that Boomer-Helo stuff (even though I thought that was OK.) Boomer would then have fulfilled her "perfect machine" transformation to bad guy more organically and believably.
I could go on. I think the writing sucks this second season. I'm dreading the last episodes. But there's no question I'll be raptly watching.

Cmu, I'm on my way to a meeting, but I'd love to talk about this more. Bxgrl is also a fan.
I'm waiting for the inevitable scene when they get to the penultimate moment when everyone you've grown to care about is dead or dying, a blue Earth-like planet looms in the camera shot, and then the camera pulls back, the planet turning into the iris of the hybrid or Anders, back into a shot of her/him lying in the tank on a ship, and the whole 4 years has taken place in their imagination.
At that point.....well, I wanted a flatscreen tv, anyway.

I am really looking forward to BSG tonight, and I am stuck at work, possibly for many more hours. If I miss the finale I will be super duper pissed off.
I'm thinking maybe jumping near a black hole means time travel.
Posted by: lechacal at March 20, 2009 6:33 PM
Finale's at 9pm not 10 tonight! ( 2hrs AND 11 minutes if you set your recorder)
Also being aired again at midnite, I think, all 3 hours (

A bit late, but have a great trip to my hometown, Benson! Go to El Cuervo Taco Shop or El Indio for some real Mexican food if you can find a moment.

as a 99% lurker, 1% poster - reading this i wish i went.
i did actually sort of lurk, however. and it played out just like every time i pull up the open thread.
i walked by (it's on my way home), peeked in and saw a lot going on (kind of like every time i pull up the open thread).. thought about posting, i mean going in, then thought better of it.
i will say meeting a lot of you would be more of a celebrity sighting than meeting a reality tv star (no offense 99l - just not a fan of the show. i'm sure you're very nice and normal person-like as they all say above). dibs, biff, and mostly the what - you're all almost famous.
maybe next time.

I had a great time meeting you all, Benson, Simon, Montrose Morris, cobblehiller, SenatorSt., Mr. B, DIBS, Shawn Anderson. Thank you for organizing it, Biff. It was really fun. Oh, also JohnIfe and cmu and chicken..... what a great time.
