a super funny update on the overcrowding stroller parking situation in my building that i wrote about yesterday... well turns out one of the people with the strollers is someone who lives on my floor, the ground floor, the LOBBY! so there is no need to take it up that many flights like i thought and felt sympathy for. (tho to be honest i think she's in a one bedroom with her husband and three kids). that's gotta blow. so maybe it's a room issue. however it gets funnier. she put up a note near the strollers saying she lost the key to her stroller and if anyone has something she can cut the lock chain with!!! lol. i totally think we do have wire cutters in the apartment and if it's still locked up tonight im going to knock on her door and be a good neighbor. oh btw she is the one who complained to me that my roommate's dog left a dookie on the floor in the lobby near her door. btw that does not happen often. we had a new dog walker, and it happened to me once too, but his dog is 16 years old and she doesnt drop one out like a normal dog where they circle and make a face. it just plops right out of her (and it's totally solid so it's not like hard to clean up). of course i felt bad, but seriously lady... a little nibble of poop < 4 strollers and a scooter locked on chains blocking the freepile and mailboxes. hahaha.
so who is coming tonight btw?

Biff, strollers, poop, what's next????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 9:28 AM
And poop gets mentioned on post #2. Good work, Rob! :-)
Rob, are you coming for sure tonight? I know you said you can't make it until a bit later. I really hope you can attend.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 9:29 AM
biff i suck at names AND faces, but you were the first person i met that night right? or was that adam? turns out my roommate is getting back at 2 from barcelona today so i dont have to go home first to walk the dogs after work. however i stupidly forgot to DVR hell's kitchen. GRRRRRR. so i have to call him to see if he knows how to do it. if not ill have to stop home first.

Where's cobblehiller with today's agenda??? Hmm, cats? porn? reality tv? I don't know!!
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 9:29 AM
Don't think I'll make it tonight, unfortunately.
I forgot I have Parent/Teacher Conferences tonight. Won't leave work until 7:30/8:00. I'm usually pretty wiped after these days/nights.
But I'll get to smile at all the honesty I drop on the parents about their little "angels".
;)
Have fun tonight...

Rob, excellent! Looking forward to seeing you. It's possible you saw me first although there's a slight resemblance between me and Adam.
You can always download or watch Hell's Kitchen on the network website if you have to. I've caught up with missed shows that way.

ooooooooh parent teacher nights are funny. i always got glowing reviews from all my teachers except my 7th grade homeroom / english lit teacher. she was a total townie who lived in the same town as us in jersey and moonlighted at the pathmark in our town at night. she was like 22 or something. anyway everyone hated her. EVERYONE. someone wrote beach whale on the chalkboard one day and she actually corrected everyone and was all like it's beachED whale. derrr. anyway my grandparents used to grocery shop at that pathmark every friday night and of course she worked there and she would tell them things i said and did and what other kids said about me, blah blah. and i think she made stuff up, no kidding. it was really frustrating. the worst was when she had someone from another class come in to my history class, call me out, bring me into her class, and said "youre being suspended!" i was like what? i think i nearly cried (i was a huge nerd) in front of the whole class and she screams APRIL FOOLS! i was totally mortified. okay now retelling this story it's actually kind of funny. it wasnt at the time tho.
there was this awesome hoodlum chick in my class who used to get into big arguments with her. she was seriously 15 in 7th grade. she put tacks on her seat, glued her seat, stole her purse, etc. i pretty much for the most part loved all my teachers but that one will go down as worst teacher of ALL time!
ms. sandstrom you big beach whale, you sucked!!!
anyway that had nothing to do about parent teacher conferences.. but those were funny i guess. what really went on in those anyway?
*rob*
Posted by: PitbullNYC at March 19, 2009 9:38 AM
We never had parent/teacher conferences when I was growing up. Besides, I was a model student... :)

Rob - i was walking on your block yesterday and smelled LOTS of pot smoke coming from some apt. was that you?
does anyone know the law about smoking in your apt? i.e. safe to assume that someone can smell it, call the police, and they can enter your place on probable cause? i ask b/c a friend wanted to smoke while at my place and i was too nervous (i dont smoke)

When you Assheads are partying tonight just remember this is just over the horizon! The shockwave from the collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble is coming this way! The FED has gone off the reservation with Quantitative Easing. The FED is printing money and destroying the value of yours and will unleash the inflation monster! So have fun tonight and plan for the next one this October, I might show up for that one..

I heard the sales of the edible Spam are going through the roof due to the economy. (Oh, and I use the term "edible" loosely).
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 9:50 AM
I had a really bad day yesterday after discovering I lost a lot of work on my computer that I need for a meeting today. I was up most of the night frantically working, as I am now.
If I crash and burn right after my meeting, I’m not sure I’ll be there tonight. I hope to be able to make it, but if not, have a great time!
And if I’m not there and since I don’t drink, will someone please not have a drink on my behalf.
Hope to see you all later.

Poop
Strollers
Park Slope [ipso facto - since Rob said it]
Dogs
Porn
Reality TV
DIBS sex life
Pot smoking
Cigarette Smoking
A What rant [Morning What!]
Derivatives [ipso facto, see What's rant]
SPAM [digital & edible!]
We still need:
Actual cat discussion - brief mention doesn't count!
bxgrl rant
benson rant
What's kid photo - Pretty please?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 9:55 AM
Rob, funny story about your 7th grade teacher.
I love Conferences. I make the kids tell the parents how they did and why they earned the grade on their report card.
There is no better feeling as a teacher than to watch a kid, generally the disrespectful loudmouths, describe to their parents why it is they failed or almost failed. Half the time I don't say a word, I let the student do all the talking.
99% of the time that student's work and behavior improves dramatically from there on out.
I teach 250 kids so I get about 40 or so parents at these things. Draining but well worth it.
If I can muster it I'll try to swing by tonight on my way home...

the What-
I can guarantee you will -never- show up. You lack balls.
Posted by: Prodigal_Son at March 19, 2009 10:01 AM
goldie that most certainly was not me! however there are a TON of pot smokers in my building. someone said it a while back in some thread, but it seems like 1/2 of park slope's adult smoke weed. i only smoke it when im offered it, never buy it, but everytime i smoke i get so delerious and cant function. it's just not good for me so i try to stay away from it.
i *think* you cant call the cops if you smell weed coming from someone's apartment because there are deodorants and room odorizers that smell like weed that are sold. so cops cant just come in for some random cause like a smell.
*rob*

ooooh kids go to yours christopher? i think our "parents night" it was called back then it was only for parents and teachers, but im not sure. i liked it cuz it meant my grandmother was out of the house for a few hours. tho she mostly was out most nights anyway at bingo. (i was pretty feral growing up. my grandfather didnt live with us during the week.) ahhahah

so wait a sec, Rob.
"because there are deodorants and room odorizers that smell like weed that are sold."
People buy products that specifically smell like something that otherwise people want to mask?
Thats like a candle that smells like farts. Or incense that smells like b.o.

What and SnarkSlope
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 10:32 AM
Rob,
We had to go to ours with our parents. You'd sit on a chair outside the classroom door and then when they'd finished discussing you they'd call you in and let you know how you were doing and what they expected from you.
You're teacher had to moonlight at Pathmark? You should feel bad for her now knowing that she worked two jobs! I'd be cranky too.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 10:33 AM
I just talked to my wife about it again and I am pretty sure I will make it. I just didn't want to assume anything because its been a rocky week with the end of maternity leave. Biff is getting the name tags just in case.

Cobblehiller;
Here is my rant of the day,and it is directed at you!
I find it amazing how you "suck up" to the What. I hestitate to use that phrase, given that we are talking about this person, but I am using it in the rhetorical meaning.
I don't wish to give this person more air time, but I frankly find it amazing that anyone would take him seriously, never mind treat him like he is some type of celebrity. This is a guy whose stated hero is Sonny Carson, the man who applauded Yankel Rosenbaum's murder (he was "very proud" of the murderers), the man who stated after the infamous Korean grocer boycott (you know, the boycott which had the motto "Don't Shop With People Who Don't Look Like Us"}:
"In the future, there'll be funerals, not boycotts."
Here is a poster who engages in the most vulgar racist, misogynist and homophobic rants - just like his stated hero - and you talk to him like he is just some cute rascally fellow.
Political correctness at its finest!
See you tonight!

Have a great trip DH!
Rob, take the R train to Court Street, be at the BACK of the train. You'll pop up at Clinton Street and Montague. Walk AGAINST the traffic on Clinton to Atlantic, turn right, and walk down the block. If you get to Henry, you've gone too far!
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 11:31 AM
Cobblehiller is this true? You've spoken to someone with the expressed written consent of Benson?
Weren't you aware that he dictates the moral code?
Benson, once again I'm brought back to this thought- stuff it. You're disapproval does not a wrong make.

does it matter if i take the first car instead of the last? i always take the first car unless a bum peed or pooped in it. (im asking cuz i know sometimes you have to take a certain car to even get out of the stop...) i dont mind walking down the length of the subway on court street if that isnt the case.

"Cobblehiller;
Here is my rant of the day,and it is directed at you!"
Yippee! Bring it benson! I've had two cups of coffee, I'm ready!
I could care less what you or anyone else thinks about how I talk to or treat any other poster. Unless I am treating someone badly, I see no reason for you to take notice or concern yourself in anyway whatsoever.
There are plenty of posters that interact in a positive way with another poster whom I dislike, or happen to think is an asshat/asshead. But I don't march around thinking that my opinion matters more than a pile of doggie doo to anyone but me.
So I find it surprising that you think that your opinion of my interaction with What would matter to me anymore than your opinion of my relationship with BH [my Better Half] or the Dalai Lama would matter to me.
Shall I submit requests to you about who I want to talk to and more importantly how I should talk to them? What format would you like that in? How much notice would you like? Do you want that in PowerPoint or Word format?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 11:42 AM
Rob, you could also take the 6 and transfer to the 4/5 and pop out around Court and Joralemon. But I would stick with cobblehiller's directions. She knows the area better than most of us.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 11:42 AM
THL;
I have never told a single person on this thread what to do.
I express my opinion on matters, just like you do. You have tsked-tsked the morals of brokers and people on reality TV shows who prize celebrity over a normal family life.
I am talking about someone whose moral compass points to Sonny Carson, who, by the way, is also a convicted kidnapper.
Political correctness sometimes reigns on this Board. We can tsk-tsk mis-guided people who seek some minor shot at celebrity through a reality TV show, but we should all seek peace and dialogue with someone whose hero is a convicted thug that applauded a murder.
Posted by: benson at March 19, 2009 11:43 AM
Rob,
No, it really doesn't matter, but it's easier if you pop up right on Clinton. Was just trying to make it simpler for you! : )
If you end up at the front, walk down Court WITH the traffic to Atlantic and turn right, walk over past Clinton to the bar.

I have been the biggest proponent of making The What a persona non grata on these boards, in the same way as PropJoe and others. That is exactly my point.
Oh well, folks just want me to shut up. Fine by me. I'd like to see this site continue to degrade into a political echo chamber and a continued vehicle for The What to feed his need for noteriety and celebrity, like his thuggish hero.

"see this site continue to degrade into a political echo chamber"
Benson, I completely understand the logic behind your reasons for not wanting to provide a platform for the What. However, I think that if he were not here (or his alter-ego BHO) this site really could become an echo chamber. And a few of us here have figured out that What is really a performance artist and an invented personality and as such is kind of entertaining. SO I wouldn't fault anyone for taking your position on this and I definitely wouldn't begrudge cobblehiller or biff or myself for that matter the odd indulgence of mixing it up with him. Its kind of funny if you look at it the right way.

Here is a poster who engages in the most vulgar racist, misogynist and homophobic rants - just like his stated hero - and you talk to him like he is just some cute rascally fellow.
Why thank you Benson : ^ }. That comment is a badge of honor.
Mr. Sonny Carson was fighting in the trenches of the Ghetto why you was voting for elements to destroy Black Men and Women. Mr Sonny Carson was a friend to my family for years and It was an honor to have known him!
Let's take a look at your hero Ronald Reagan. This president did a end around Congress and instated the Greatest Covert Operation in American history!
Iran-Contra affair
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran-Contra_affair
Iran-Contra affair (Persian: ماجرای مکفارلین; Spanish: Escándalo Irán-Contra) was a political scandal in the United States which came to light in November 1986, during the Reagan administration, over an arms-for-hostages deal with Iran and funding for the Nicaraguan Contras.
It began as an operation to improve U.S.-Iranian relations, wherein Israel would ship weapons to a relatively moderate, politically influential group of Iranians; the U.S. would then resupply Israel and receive the Israeli payment. The Iranian recipients promised to do everything in their power to achieve the release of six U.S. hostages, who were being held by the Lebanese Shia Islamist group Hezbollah. The plan eventually deteriorated into an arms-for-hostages scheme, in which members of the executive branch sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the release of the American hostages.[1][2] Large modifications to the plan were conjured by Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North of the National Security Council in late 1985, in which a portion of the proceeds from the weapon sales was diverted to fund anti-Sandinista and anti-communist rebels, or Contras, in Nicaragua.[3] While President Ronald Reagan was a supporter of the Contra cause,[4] there has not been any evidence uncovered showing that he authorized this plan.
Plus this Covert Operation produced Blow-Back in the form of Drugs being sold on the streets in America in most Black neighborhoods...
Gary Webb
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Webb
Webb was best known for his 1996 "Dark Alliance" series of articles written for the San Jose Mercury News and later published as a book. In the three-part series, Webb investigated Nicaraguans linked to the CIA-backed Contras who had allegedly smuggled cocaine into the U.S. which was then distributed as crack cocaine into Los Angeles and funneled profits to the Contras. Webb also alleged that this influx of Nicaraguan supplied cocaine sparked and significantly fueled the widespread crack epidemic that swept through urban areas. According to Webb, the CIA was aware of the cocaine transactions and the large shipments of drugs into the U.S. by the Contra personnel and directly aided drug dealers to raise money for the Contras.
Webb's reporting generated a large controversy and the Mercury News backed away from the story, effectively ending Webb's career as a mainstream media journalist. In 2004, Webb was found dead from two gunshot wounds to the head, which the coroner's office judged a suicide.

Sorry, I don't agree. First, I don't buy the argument that this guy is necessary to balance out the arguments here. There are plenty of folks on this site who can make an intelligent argument about the possible downsides of gentrification, Bxgrl for one.
Secondly, I still think folks are missing my main point, and have a blind spot wrt this person. Again, HE stated that his hero is Sonny Carson. You know, words can have an impact and for that reason folks like PropJoe and Winelover are virtually banished from this site, yet here we are talking about someone whose words have been equally racist AND has said that he applauds a person who instigated violence and death threats. Why is he tolerated? There is a double-standard at play here.

You get all preachy when people don't lash out at PropJoe or Winelover. Again, don't tell people how they should react. Silence can be deafening.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 12:56 PM
Wasder;
You didn't address my second point, as has no one else on this site.
Folks are talking to me as if I have the power to control what is said and done here, when they know full well I don't have any such authority. They are totally mis-representing my point.
I am talking about what passes for acceptable conversation by a vast majority of people on this site, and what doesn't, and in doing so, I am stating that there is a double-standard at play.
The fact that folks are avoiding a discussion of this double standard convinces me that I am correct. I generally find that when folks don't want to address your point, it is a tacit concession.

benson- having battled it out with What on that thread I have to say a couple of things- and it's not something that is relevant only to him. Every group looks at life through its own particular lens.
I understand why Sonny Carson is a hero in the Black community- he fought for them tooth and nail. He did a lot of good, fought to instill pride in young people, used his community clout to get things done. Doesn't mean I don't think he was capable of being a complete ass at times but I can't expect the Black community to reject him just because I am Jewish and he is antisemitic.
Sonny Carson's interests were in his own community and he felt the Jewish community ( and whites in general) were the enemy. I'd be a liar if I said he had no reason to feel this way. I'd be lying even more if I said the Jewish community was without fault. But theres plenty of blame to go around on both sides- Black and white. (I'm an equal opportunity blamer).
I'll argue with What on nearly everything- actually I fight with him because of his personal attacks, but not so much on his way of thinking. I warrant more people would listen to him if he didn't get so insulting or obscene (for those who missed a classic late night showdown between him and legion- gross!!)
Granted I don't think he rates a "cute and rascally" reputation, and I posted a whole list of those I think are real heroes, but I can't get upset because of Sonny Carson.

Benson, I happen to agree with you about the double standard of what is acceptable conversation on this blog. I have chosen to remain silent, simply because I don't want to get caught up in the fray of this argument. People will speak to whomever they wish, and that is their business. Not everyone who remains silent or simply lurks is de-facto condoning the What's tirades and name calling. Am I guilty for not joining the fight? Maybe. But that's something I'll have to deal with inside myself. I'm not asking you to stop pointing out the discrepancy. I guess I just want to say that you should try to recognize that there are people with you in your thoughts but simply choose not to post about it. Somehow I think it all feeds into his ranting and uncalled for insults (and now I too have fed the fire. sigh.).

benson...we talkes about this double standard about a week ago. Basically, you are correct. Italian jokes, Irish jokes Polish jokes (though i don't think we've had any)even Asian jokes always seem more "acceptable" in mainstream society than does anything black or Jewish. I'm not saying its right or wrong but it is there and you're not wrong about bringing it up.

"I am talking about what passes for acceptable conversation by a vast majority of people on this site, and what doesn't, and in doing so, I am stating that there is a double-standard at play."
OK--I will bite because I admire your chutzpah to continue with this line of reasoning. I agree that What gets away with saying things that other people would be shunned and abused for saying. I also agree that Sonny Carson's praising of Yankel Rosenbaum's killers is heinous and against everything civil people ought to be for. What you are tapping into benson is part of a much larger national conversation about race relations, especially along the black/white divide. Bxgrl said it well when she stated that What exploits white guilt about the historical treatment of black people in America and I admit that I am certainly vulnerable to that line of guilt-inducement. No reparations or formal apologies have ever been offered for slavery and I am painfully aware of that fact. For The What to then extrapolate that to "all white people in Clinton Hill are hijacking asshats" is of course laughably reductionist and silly and I try to do my part to uplift dialogue and get people out of the stere-typing business. However, I do know that this site would be less entertaining and weirdly less thought provoking without his special brand of bomb throwing. Sorry to go all moral-relativist on you. I do think I try to call out hateful language from everybody but I know that the internet is a big messy place where consensus will never exist. Your attempts to curtail other people's conversations, or to suggest who they talk to, will never find a welcome audience because of the lack of uniformity as to what is acceptable. I do welcome your attempts to discuss thorny issues like this and think that you have contributed something positive here benson.

I'm waiting for the What to adopt the outraged at the besmirching of his character tone that he adopts at the end of the day.
Normally it starts off in the morning with an "assheads do you know this" or "retards get a$$raped" nonsense, then proceeds with a lot of missing the point cuss-and-paste siging off with "suck my" or "stick it" or "I am great, bang my drum", then he gets called to task and at the end of the day he is "disgusted" at the level of discourse and the unwarranted assasination of his good name.
What a card.

Everything you just wrote above could have easily been written about David Dukes. After all, he had his own particular view on life, that he saw through his "group lens", didn't he? He certainly was a hero to a large group of folks too, wasn't he?
His interests were for his own "community" and in that role, he saw blacks, jews and others as the enemy, didn't he?
There is only one difference between Sonny Carson and David Dukes, at least on threads like this one. One has been recognized for the vile racist that he is, and is treated accordingly, while the other (and his associates) have not been, and are treated as a legitimate voice.
A double standard, indeed. Political correctness run amok.

LISTEN ALL.....part of the reason What doesn't get called out on all his racist shit is because we're all tired of doing it and it is all too inane and predictable. making sense of the off-the-meds tirades is often difficult and circuitous.
You're letting a common enemy (most of the time, but not all...did you see his comments on The Invisible Man yesterday?) divide you. I think you all stand for essentially the same thing but devote varrying degrees of outrage at it. It's only a blog. If you want to battle real racism there are many other sites for that.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 1:19 PM
Don't think the solution to an excess of political correctness is more political correctness (in the form of shunning certain posters or seeking to broaden the range of 'unacceptable' jokes).

Sorry! not accusing anyone of anything. I was trying to speak for myself and not anyone else. I do think that it is easier to call out winelover or propjoe than What and what the reason for that is I don't know.
And yes DIBS I do agree with you that trying to call out every ridiculous things that comes out of his mouth is a losing and tiresome cause.

Benson in a desperate bid for attention and relevance has become the What!
Decides his compass is the sainted moral one for the group.
Calls out a poster for not abiding by said code.
Cuts and pastes quotes.
Points angry finger at dissenters.
Sits back and enjoys the resulting fray.

Snappy- you said it well, and so did wasder. I think its more difficult for some of us to watch how the What gets treated- and there is a good deal of truth in benson's comment- especially those of us who have been in the line of Whatfire.
He has said some truly awful things , and very often to people who don't deserve it, and I'll mention Montrose. Some of the things he has said to her would have found him lying in a fetal position with his balls kicked up into his nose if he said it in the street. I'm not able to overlook that stuff. This may be a cyber community, but it is a community, and it's now going offline as well. I love the intense, and often brutally honest discussions we have- its healthy and it educates. But the anger and resentment What brings out is neither. If we all met on the street and the What said some of the stuff he posts here, no one would tolerate it. So why tolerate it here?

Etson;
I am not in disagreement.
You probably missed it, but I wrote a letter to The What about a week ago. In it I told him that I would engage with him in a civil dialogue, if he would do likewise, but that the ball was in his court, given his past "performances". I told him that I am not going to write to him simply to serve as fodder for one of his street performances.
Even if I were to engage, that would not change my mind about him, specifically, he is a racist, and certainly not someone worthy of praise, or treated like a cute rascal. He is what he is, The What, a vile racist, from his own written record.
Posted by: benson at March 19, 2009 1:37 PM
OMFG!!! I just had a *Rob* moment!
So, I have a very important meeting today in a few. I go to the bathroom to spruce myself up. I look in the mirror and realize my glasses are crooked. (Yes, I wear glasses. Big hair, plastic pumps and eyeglasses, I’m a sight to behold). I take off my glasses and bend them a bit to fix them, they’re still crooked, so I bend the frame some more, still crooked, bend the frame again and SNAP….my frames broke in half at the bridge…..aaaarrrggghhh.
For goodness sake, anything that could go wrong regarding this meeting is going wrong. I can’t show up to the meeting with tape holding my glasses together. I’m going without glasses and can hopefully see enough to not make a fool of myself.
Oh, and if I show up tonight without glasses and don’t say hi to you it’s because you’re a blur and I don’t recognize you or can’t read your nametag….not because I’m a biatch, I swear.
Hope to see you later; well technically, maybe I won’t ‘see’ you.
And I’m sure as I’m walking on Atlantic I’ll slip on the hill or step in poop as a black cat crosses in front of me.

I hate david dukes too- but he comes from a background of wealth and privilege and in all honesty, the white experience in this country is vastly different than what the Black experience has been. Dukes was never a minority and believe me when I say I am no fan of political correctness when its a cover up for hypocrisy. That said, a Sonny Carson is far more understandable to me than a David Dukes- and I think anyone who is in a minority can understand my reasoning on that. It's a survival tactic.

Biff--they are doing the autopsy today so we should know something soon. when learning to ski I think the most common accident is when the skis get ahead of the body and you fall down backwards--which could bring the back of your head into contact with hard packed snow (not unlike hitting plain old hard ground). Could have caused some kind of slow leakage of blood which would explain why she didn't feel anything until later. Either way, awful awful story and she sounded like a wonderful person.

related to skiing, i went on a ski trip for my birthday a few years ago with my ex and his friend. i never skiid before. there was a green supposedly easy path to go on for beginners. anwyay, take the air trolley up the mountain and i realized just then how afraid of heights i actually am, especially in nature. i think id die if i went to the grand canyon. i literally almost started crying. it was the first time i put skiis ON and i couldnt walk in them even. they tried to give me a mini lesson than wanted to push me down the slope. and it looked like a HUGE f'ing mountain to me! i was like no no no. then this little 14 year old brat goes oh it's easy! whatever! anyway i dont regret my decision now to go down that huge mountain. even my bf and his friend who skiid before said it wound up being hard and they fell a few times and it took them forever to get down the whole thing!!!
seriously, big long sticks do not belong on human beings feet, especially on top of slippery snow covered mountains!
just go sledding or something. it's the same thing.

not so much, although I will brewski tonight. But I basically learned to ice skate at the same time I learned to walk and I found learning to ski fairly easy after skating for years as the motions are very similar. It was kind of like skating on a hill.
Speaking of helmets, I have been taking my kids ice skating over the past couple of years and I insist they wear their helmets when skating. I am amazed by how few kids wear them on the ice.

I used to LOVE skiing. I went and broker my ankle though (not skiing) so I can't fit the boot now that I have plates and pins all through my ankle. My foot can't bend back towards my leg enough to accommodate the "lean forward" of the boot. Besides that, even if it could I can't have anything pressing against the screws it irritates the surrounding tissues too much.
I miss skiing. :(

I miss skiing too. I lived in Chicago from 1980 to 1994 and we'd always go to Utah. I miss Alta and the Alta Peruvian.
I grew up in Albany and we'd always go north to Vermont or NH...even a night trip to West Mt in Glens Falls....NEVER south to anywhere that's be full of goddam New Yorkers...Hunter comes to mind.
I did injure my head once and required 3-4 stitches but luckily that never had any lasting effect.

One of the reason I get along with Cobblehiller is we has born and raised in Brooklyn. We (from our perspectives) have experienced the good and the bad of New York. Most of the posters at Brownstoner never saw the Dark Side of New York City. My fear is when things get bad, the retards are going to flee bringing down the hood. I write from experience not watching Sex in the City or Marry Tyler Moore but hardcore urban living.

This just in from the autopsy...
"The NYC medical examiner's office says Natasha Richardson died of blunt impact to the head.
A spokeswoman for the ME says the death has been ruled an accident. The cause of death is "epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head."
Dr. Wouter Schievink, a neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, tells TMZ a common example of someone suffering an epidural hematoma is when a baseball player is hit in the side of the head by a pitch.
He also says that an epidural hematoma can be detected by a CT scan. But sometimes if the scan is performed early on, the injury might not be detected."
No mention of pre-existing but I guess that doesn't mean that there wasn't something...

DIBS,
What has done what any successful demagogue has done, picked a permanent and ever-changing enemy and a cause without practical remedy. He thinks that if the economy tanks all the way into a depression, then gentrification will reverse itself, so he roots for everyone to fail so that they can abandon their houses at a fraction of current value. There is no nuance at all, and no end to the straw men he might identify as stand-ins for his enemy.
Montrose has written eloquently about the form of gentrification you describe, neighborhoods picking themselves up in the aftermath of the 60s-70s fiscal crisis and improving themselves to the point where others want in. I'm no fan of unbridled free-markets. I believe in a strong regulatory and planning role for government. But I simply do not see how you "win" a war against gentrification. If property becomes more valuable, someone with more means is going to pay for it whenever an owner wants to cash in on the increase. Gentrification is often rough, and governent and community organizations have arole in trying to find ways to curb excesses and help people who are displaced. But there are also a lot of lower and middle class homeowners of all backgrounds in some of the neighborhoods What seeks to defend against gentrification who now have the means to retire beyond their wildest dreams because they made the best of of the run-up in home values over the last three decades.
Many things have raised property values in formerly "ungentrified" areas -- drops in crime, parents oprganizing to improve neighborhoods schools, community organizations, gardeners, etc. A depression isn't going to bring back high crime and de-gentrify the City. The City's finances are so much better managed now than in the 60s and 70s that drops in revenues are not going to take the same toll. All those empty lots and burned out buildings were the results of decades of disinvestment and destruction (Cross Bronx and Sheridan Expressways anyone?).
In short, there is simply no way for What to get what he wants, which allows him to tilt at windmills here ad nauseum. The frustrating part of What's arguments -- apart from the vulgarisms -- is that he never spells out, nor thinks he has to, what he is for. Does he want a freeze on home sales? 100% tax on home sale profits? Racial segregation by neighborhood? A few highly publicized muggings to scare new people away? He just wants the tanking economy to destry everyone he thinks is a gentrifying asshat, while somehow leaving everyone else alone. But an economy that does that will also cause the loss of many more jobs of those in the communities he thinks he is trying to save from gentrification. The enemy seems to be anyone who remotely seems to embrace anything tangentially related to gentrification. If you like a coffee shop that opened where a laundromat used to be, you're an asshat. If you worry about crime, you're an asshat (or its variations), or perhaps even a racist.
I have nothing against the feelings that may lie behind some of What's statements, but real debate and substantive argument is impossible. As much as I am sympathetic to housing and community organizers who do their best to help communities address the many inequities that exist in our City, I see no way to engage meaningfully with What. I don't hate him, but I can't attend to most of his postings as charitably as our good friend cobblehiller and others.
That said, I did what you did and agreed with his post on the HOD thread.

Retards or not, the vast majority of us have no plans to flee. We, along with our neighbors both new and old, will not let any hood be brought down.

ROTW -- I have been living in Brooklyn since 1985. You know that from previous exchanges we have had on other threads a while back.
Do you have any evidence to back up your suggestion that NYC's finances are in a comparable position as 1975? Do you actually understand all the financing moves that led up to NYC nearly going bankrupt in 1975 and do you know what NYC's financing and debt obligation practices are today as compared with 35 years ago? Do you know how much of the City's current budget goes to debt service as compared with 1974? Do you know what the City is paying in interest on its various bond issues now as compared with then? How about ratings for its bonds? The City's financial position at this difficult time is not merely a function of real estate tax revenues. I am curious as to your knowledge and historical perspective on the City's finances.

There were hard times all over the city- not just in Brooklyn. You have no idea what most of us have or have not seen or lived through- that's an assumption on your part. The Bronx was no picnic either, you know. As much as I love Brooklyn I don't find that a qualification for being better than everyone else. And if things get tough, I'm not bailing on my neighborhood.
People like DIBS, wasder, me, MM and many others moved here because we love it- I have no trust fund. MM? Her loyalty to Bed-Stuy and CHN is far beyond anyone I can mention. SO what if she wasn't born and raised in Brooklyn- what a ridiculous dichotomy. how many years should she be here before you accept her as a fellow Broooklynite? I chose to live in Brooklyn most of my adult life. I think that more than qualifies me to be a Brooklynite too.

I've always liked Natasha Richardson's work, and she always impressed me as a likable and lovely person who was obviously very much in love with her husband (and who wouldn't be) and kids. I guess, in part because celebrity was hers at birth, she always had a calm about her that was refreshing. Several obits I read mentioned her "luminous" persona, and I have to agree. Her sudden death was tragic, and my thoughts and prayers go to her family and friends.
Celebrities seem to have it so good, and their lives in front of the camera make their personal tragedies public, something that doesn't happen to most of us, but their grief and sadness is something we all know and recognize in our own lives. I was saddened when Princess Diana died, although I never gave her much thought, and I am saddened now. My own mother died suddenly, on an ordinary day, and I know the shock and disbelief that accompanies the event. My most sincere condolences go into the universe for them.

I consider anyone a true son or daughter of a neighborhood when they contribute to that neighborhood in some way. It doesn't matter if you've lived there a year or all your life. If you join a local organization, or house of worship, or even sweep 2 houses beyond your own on weekends, you become a neighbor, not just a resident.
A neighbor cares about what is going on around them, a neighbor interacts with the other people around them, even if only greeting someone on the block. A neighbor gets involved somehow, somewhere. Of course, not everyone has the time or inclination to become a community activist, and I don't say you have to. But if you hole up in your house or apartment, don't shop or even walk around in the neighborhood, speak to anyone outside of your family, don't participate in anything, not even the signing of a petition, and don't even care to find out what's going on around you, you aren't a neighbor.
I've known and worked with people who became active in the community from the day they unpacked, and people who have lived here forever who do nothing, whatsoever, but complain or reminisce about the old days, "when there were still quality people in the neighborhood", and lots of people in between those two extremes.
To be a real Brooklynite does not depend on an accident of birth or upon one's parents' decision made long ago. A real Brooklynite wants Brooklyn to be the best it can be, and that takes the efforts of the new, the old, the rich, the poor, the majority, the minority, whatever that may be. No one has a God given right to the title. It must be earned.

Wow, THL, gorgeous house, really gracious proportions and wonderful detail. Price looks great, too.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:28 PM
Yes, I would say Jay St. is closer.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:29 PM
benson...remind me to tell you later the story of the most loyal dog in the world. Since you're in Japan alot, you may already know this story. I'll print the details here tomorrow.
Tomorrow, dog stories only, no cats.
My first was a golden retriever, Brandy and my second was an Akita, Toshi.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:30 PM
DIBS, if you come up on Jay Street near Willoughby, then just walk towards Borough Hall. Then you're at Court Street, you go left, walk with the traffic to Atlantic, hang a right on Atlantic and walk past Clinton to the bar.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:31 PM
Montrose;
Well said!! I fully agree. There is nothing I can add to what you have written.
I am sorry to hear about your mom, and ditto for Wasder. I am fortunate to still have both of my folks, even though my dad is now approaching 85. He's one of those salty old Brooklynites who pronounces "oil" as "erl" and Greenpoint as "Greenpernt".
Will you be there tonight? I hope so. See you then!
Posted by: benson at March 19, 2009 4:31 PM
cobblehiller...actually its a toss up which one is closer, Jay St being further west but Hoyt being further south.

I never had a dog so does that meant I can't post on the open thread tomorrow :-(
Can I post sad gerbil tales of woe? :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:34 PM
The problem is I don't know which way Borough hall or anything is when I come out of the subway. Coming out at Hoyt, I know the whole neighborhood pretty well.
Don't worry, I'll get there.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:34 PM
DIBS, Hoyt is miles away, don't get out there. It lets you out way down by Bond Street.
I wouldn't wish that long walk on even an Anti-purplian such as yourself.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:35 PM
"Can I post sad gerbil tales of woe? :-)
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:34 PM"
I think Richard Gere has some sad gerbil tales of woe!!!!
These too my friends are untrue urban myths!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:37 PM
MM, So right, and so eloquently spoken.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 4:37 PM
Well, in my mind it's further east!
"But if you hole up in your house or apartment, don't speak to anyone outside of your family, you aren't a neighbor."
Uh-oh...maybe I'm not a Brooklynite! Just kidding MM. : )
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:38 PM
MM...you may know this....what do the large letter "L" that are in the tilees at the Hoyt Schermerhorn subway station stand for?? Nobody seems to know, certainly not any of the MTA employess. "The What?? " "What L?"

If it's so chilltown Rob why won't you come back and enjoy the rent stabilization they have here? You'd once said you never wanted to come back :(
i must have said that in some kind of a hissy. i just figured it would be strange i guess to move back to my birth town. the rent stabalization there is very tempting, tho im sure if i ever moved back it would cease to exist haha. i enjoy my current living situation tho and probably won't move out of where i live unless i hit a financial rock bottom.
question is floyd's in an area that's safe for a man in a hannah montana hat to walk around at night?

"question is floyd's in an area that's safe for a man in a hannah montana hat to walk around at night?"
What is a hannah montana hat?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:44 PM
Oh, like a baseball cap?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:44 PM
MM, are you coming tonight?
bxgrl, I think you already said you aren't attending, right?
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:45 PM
dave- when you come out at Jay st. look for Boro Hall. Walk up to Boro Hall and Court St, then go left following the direction of one way traffic on Court to Atlantic. The right on Atlantic.
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:45 PM
"question is floyd's in an area that's safe for a man in a hannah montana hat to walk around at night?"
AYOR

"What is a hannah montana hat?"
I think I would rather wear an Asshat!
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:46 PM
Maybe the station had another name at one time. If the tiles are upstairs, but not on the platform, they may reference back to a retail store that used to have an entrance to the subway. They closed it off, but McCrory's (long gone) used to have an exit leading to the station, much like the one KMart now has at the Astor Place downtown #6 train, in Manhattan.
I can't recall where the "L" is, which is pitiful, I've been in and around and through there for the last 25 years.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:46 PM
I'm baaaaack!...with some crazy glue.
I'm not going to read all the posts, someone give me a brief re-cap.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 19, 2009 4:46 PM
DIBS, you're not taking the company chopper tonight?
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:47 PM
"someone give me a brief re-cap."
A lot of talking and nothing was resolved. Same old, same old.
How was the interview?
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:48 PM
I'll probably be there around 7.
Bxgrl gave me a mug for Christmas that says Elitist Pompous Black Asshat. I may bring it for identification.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:48 PM
I vaciliated, thinking yes but suddenly found out last night a project deadline is 2 weeks sooner than I thought and am now desperately working to finish. So no going anywhere unless someone foolishly offers to do @ 50 photoshop repairs on a series of portraits for me. In addition to all the layout and illustration I'm doing on it.
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:49 PM
MM, wonderful! That will make me and many other attendees very happy.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:49 PM
But I don't know what Boro Hall looks like. Don't worry...I'll ask which way to Court & Atlantic.
It'll be like a mini Brooklyn adventure with alcohol at the end.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:50 PM
bxgrl, that's disappointing. Maybe you can find a way to make it. If not, good luck finishing the project. I'm happy to hear you have work these days!
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:51 PM
MM...there are a number of them....all about 4-5' high with circles around them. They are on the level of the turnstiles. The "L" inside the circle reminds me of the Lionel train logo.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:52 PM
I know what you're talking about Dave. I've wondered the same thing!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 4:54 PM
How' the meeting go BRG?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 4:55 PM
The circle reference brought it back. I remember them. I'm pretty sure they have something to do with some long forgotten store, which lay above. Benson might remember.
Anyone remember Lamston's? They were all replaced by Duane Reades, it seems.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:56 PM
"someone give me a brief re-cap."
benson called me out for being nice to What. I told him to shove it, but i used my nice words.
otherwise, poop, bigotry, cats, dogs, colors, DIBS sex life, you know...the usual...

I'm going to invite everyone over after drinks to help figure out if I have a gas or electric dryer.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 4:57 PM
The "L" stands for the old Loesser's Dept. Store.
Posted by: bxgrl at March 19, 2009 4:57 PM
"I'm going to invite everyone over after drinks to help figure out if I have a gas or electric dryer."
But Biff, Then you'll just have a lot of gassy drunk Stoners...and you still won't know if you have a gas or electric dryer...

"I'm going to invite everyone over after drinks to help figure out if I have a gas or electric dryer."
He does have a lot of hair!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 4:58 PM
After all the drinks it's most likely to be a lot of gas.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 4:58 PM
Borough Hall is the large white building with a steeple and gold dome. Like Manhattan's City Hall, complete with large wide staircase. Dave, you gotta get out more often. With a guildbook.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:58 PM
Err, guidebook.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 4:59 PM
Si, I remember Lamston's - Joralemon/Court had one.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 4:59 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 5:05 PM
Apparently it won't be too dry with all of the drinking that is sure to be happening!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 19, 2009 5:05 PM
Biff....believe it or not the first time I went to Union Hall from Manhattan for the first party I took a car service. But that was pre-Lehman.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 5:08 PM

Snappy....take it from someone who's been to a lot of bar backroom "dark rooms", you don't need to be able to see to have a good time.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 19, 2009 5:12 PM
Thanks for the re-caps. I thought as much; that little would be discussed.
Thanks for asking re: meeting. It went blindingly well.
WHAT bxgrl isn't going tonight??!!
Snappy isn't going either :-(
Who the heck is gonna be there?
Crazy glue WORKS!!!
but now my glasses are more crooked on my face than before. I'm a little vain, I'm putting them away and will try to walk to Floyd by sense of smell.
Which way do I walk if I get out of the Union Street Station on the R train??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 19, 2009 5:12 PM
"Rule #1 - Snappy must be kept in the loop :)"
Show up and BE in the loop!!!
"Besides...if BRG can't see without her peepers she won't be able to appreciate my luscious..um...you know!"
I might not have my sight but I still have my sense of touch!

Sorry, can't make it. K-Fed's Birthday Party is at M2 Ultralounge tonight can't miss that can I?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 5:17 PM
"Which way do I walk if I get out of the Union Street Station on the R train??"
About 15 blocks west, then 10 blocks north! But there is an easier way to get there!
Floyd in on Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Henry.
Take the R to COurt Street, or the 4,5 to Borough Hall, or the F to Bergen.
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 19, 2009 5:17 PM
dibs, you are correct.
MM= abusive 3rd world mouthpiece b**ch. Of course we all underatand the b**ch can be either a lovely place of surf, sand and sun or a tree, right?
(excuse me- I think I hear someone pounding up the stairs now.....)

Oh, a K-Fed event? THL, no one will blame you for attending that instead :)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 19, 2009 5:19 PM
Snappy, I am taking tomorrow off, so if I am not on providing input to the recap, that is why. It doesn't necessarily mean I got completely drunk and woke up naked in a cornfield suffering from hypothermia (although that has happened before).
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 5:19 PM
I'm gonna be there. Biff and I will have a long chat. :)
Hey, anyone interested in a beautiful stick-frame Victorian single family with all the details and a three-car garage for $699,999 list? It's in Ridgewood, Queens (close to the Brooklyn border.) I doubt it's anywhere near a subway, so the three-car garage will come in handy. Check it out, they got nine pictures.

A light switch and a six-pack.
I will have to logoff soon. It will take me some time to pick out the matching argyle socks and v-neck sweater that I will be wearing.
Posted by: Biff Champion at March 19, 2009 5:21 PM
BRG, you'd be closer getting out at the Court St. Station at Montague and Clinton.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 5:22 PM
Biff, nice way to cover yourself! And I do expect to hear the cornfield details at some point.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 19, 2009 5:23 PM
Mopar, very cool. Looks like the city version of the house I grew up in, although we didn't have that kind of detail in my house. Ironically, my pier mirror in this house is similar to that one, except I have fluted columns, which will be a beatch to strip someday.
Looks interesting. Are you thinking about it?
Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 19, 2009 5:26 PM
You all have a good and safe time tonight. Be sure to toast the Snapster in her absence! G'nite!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 19, 2009 5:26 PM
thanks all, I know how to get to Atlantic. I'm there every week at Sahadi
I was just making a bad joke about some PWA being directionally challanged + I picked the train station (union) in the bestest neighborhood in all of brooklyn :-)
Gotta run, have to go pick out something to wear that matches my plastic pumps.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 19, 2009 5:26 PM
Mopar, great house. it that were near a subway the price would be much higher.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 5:29 PM
THL, that's too funny that we both posted places in Jersey and Queens today -- I didn't see yours before I posted. But now I have and it's lovely.
But, you know, we're much more fun than K-Fed. He wouldn't get that house at all.
Posted by: mopar at March 19, 2009 5:30 PM
Have fun everyone, play nice.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 19, 2009 5:31 PM
Montrose, no, I need a subway! Hey, I'll get there at about 7 too. Looking forward to seeing you.
