FIRST!

It took a lot of self restraint but I let some other pathetic loser post "FIRST." :)

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 9:21 AM

Well, I *was* #500 on the all important Friday the 13th Open Thread, so I still feel pretty good :) Good morning everyone!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 9:22 AM

What say we go for 658 today?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 9:31 AM

"at least I didnt go posting on the 650+ Open threader from Friday - haha - that was fun though"

um gemini10, you might want to check that. By my count, you posted no less than 45 times on the 650+ thread on Friday. Of course, that's probably still much less than what I did!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 9:33 AM

I don't know, Biff. The Friday the 13th magic may not hold over!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 9:33 AM

There's always St. Patrick's Day tomorrow!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 9:36 AM

Biff - sorry I meant I didnt go posting over the weekend to raise the 650+ thread to 700
oh yes I posted many many times on Friday :)

It is Foie Gras Week in Philadelphia from March 13 - March 20. Five dollar appetizer portions!!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 9:40 AM

that's almost worth going to Philly for...

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 9:58 AM

Further to the recent topic of words to use / not to use in real estate ads.
I really hate it when brokers now describe some properties as 'affordable' in adverts.
Not talking about the formal definition of 'affordable housing', but when they use terms such as 'affordable elegance' etc.
How does some broker I have never met presume to know what I can and can't afford?
Also makes the property they are trying to sell sound like some kind of ersatz version rather than the real deal.

The property in question this weekend was a $1mm house in Ditmas Park!

Posted by: etson at March 16, 2009 9:58 AM

chicken, I can give you a list of restaurants in Philly that will rival any in NYC in quality, service and price. And you could buy me a drink while you're down there.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 10:02 AM

is foie gras ONLY made by forcefeeding the goose, is are there more 'humane' versions avail these days? want to try it, but don't like the idea of what's done.

Posted by: goldie at March 16, 2009 10:21 AM

goldie...I had heard that there was a more humane method but haven't been able to confirm. The force feeding is something that the ducks are actually accostomed to as when they swallow whole fish. Here's a link to D'Artagnan's website discussing the feeding of ducks. Interestingly it points out that more of the duck is used for consumption than any other poultry.

oooh...are you hitting on me Dave? ;)

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 10:28 AM

I feel that way about veal, too.

dave- do you know anything about Easton, PA.? My dad and his family are from there (by way of Russia :-) I love that town.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 10:30 AM

in order to be called "foie gras", it MUST be force fed - it's the law!

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 10:30 AM

Not sure, chicken...what do you look like???

bxgrl...I've only driven through it. However, our receptionist for the offices here on this floor lives there and commutes every day.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 10:32 AM

chicken...has anyone in your family ever mated with a duck?? What would you get, a chucken?

I heard from one of the restaurants that the "foi gras" bashers" have a new cause...that eggs only be used if they are not laid in coups. Well, where the hell are they going to go to lay the eggs??????

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 10:39 AM

Everybody is posting here today???

All morning I've been posting in Friday's Open Thread wondering where everybody was!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 10:43 AM

LOL chicken. That was good. I'm mostly interested in the Asian chickens and any "south of the border" fowl. I will refrain from any comments on a "homey." ;)

"DIBS, this is me hanging out with my homeys (I'm the one in the back left).
Still interested?"

DIBS is only interested in birds he can force feed.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 10:46 AM

Well, I see that President Obama is now proposing to classify the premiums on employer-provided health insurance as income for tax purposes. Hey, didn't someone else propose that idea?? Oh yes - John McCain!!!

-Promising to substantially alter NAFTA during the primaries to grab the left flank of your party, and then jettisoning this promise upon taking office? Politics as usual.....

-Promising to be out of Iraq in 16 months after your election and then doing a slow climb-down from that position as time goes on? Adjusting to foreign policy realities.....

-Bashing your opponent about his health-care proposals, and then proposing it yourself two months after the inauguration? PRICELESS!!!

Posted by: benson at March 16, 2009 10:47 AM

Benson, don't hate the playas, hate the game.

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 10:52 AM

And in the red shorts we have "BENSON" who hails from Brooklyn and is ready to rumble. :)

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 10:52 AM

Hi Brownstoner! I'm back from my honeymoon - a week in Oahu and a week in Maui. It was truly awesome.

Were there any startling changes in the Brooklyn real estate market while I was gone? :P

Posted by: cwbuecheler at March 16, 2009 10:53 AM

Benson, you are a brave soul!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 10:56 AM

Say it aint so! You mean after 8 years of hell we finally have a president that will alter his policies based on realities?

Refreshing.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 10:56 AM

Oh, my favorite curmudgeon. benson- should we do a rhash of all the lies and changes the Bush Administration tried to force down our throats? C'mon- the man has been in office less than 2 months and trying to repair the damage done by the Republicans. Do you honestly think McCain would have stuck to everything he said in the campaign (granted he was way too busy bashing Obama for his middle name than telling us what he would do as President, but hey).

One thing Obama did tell us- he would be flexible and he would listen. Wouldn't you rather he was flexible if the situation demanded (such as in Iraq) or jacketed in cement, unwilling to change the disastrous course set by Bush?

And what are the Republicans doing? Instead of working together to help this country, they are promoting the Rush's and Jindals, and praying for Obama to fail. Is that what you want too? Because if he fails, we all fail. And I want to be very clear on this- we got here because of the republican policies and actions of the last 8 years. The Bush administration failed us over and over gain to pander to special interests, their friends and the religious right. Yet all you do is bash Obama.

Why is that?

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 10:57 AM

CWB I'd say I'm jealous but I suppose that's a forgone conclusion.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 10:57 AM

Didn't realize you got married, Cwb.
Congrat's to you and Mrs. Cwb.

In the past 2 weeks real estate prices in NYC have tripled in value and the What is everybody's best friend on Brownstoner.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 10:59 AM

BIFF...WHERE ARE YOU???? Why can't we just stick to discussing foi gras and the the upcoming get-together and all the niceties of Brooklyn brownstones? Maybe we could hear more about cw's trip to Hawaii.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 10:59 AM

I hate people like cwb who can go anywhere, then come back and post perky! :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 10:59 AM

CWB - congrats again!
I wish people (or naysayers) would just give Obama a little more time to undo all the horror that was done before him - I mean that's a lot of work!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 11:02 AM

So who's starring in today's flamewar?

Sounds like Benson is itching for another round.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 16, 2009 11:04 AM

benson, you forgot:

saying "Mission Accomplished" after lying to the world and at a time when the Iraq Invasion and subsequent civilian slaughter has just barely begun?
HEARTLESS!!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 11:04 AM

Sorry, DIBS. I couldn't stay quiet over that.

Back to our regularly scheduled frivolity...

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 11:06 AM

congratulations on the nuptials cwb!

Posted by: the chicken at March 16, 2009 11:06 AM

Okay, Snark.
We might have our players.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 11:06 AM

foie gras - so out of curiosity read up on it. turns out forcefeeding is ubiquitous in france, but not outside of france. so maybe there's an american company i could seek out----a win/win since its more humane (still killing) and perhaps i can 'buy local'. i'll propose this to the Co-op (and then probably get banned).

only thing worse might be a veal/foie gras rollatini.

Posted by: goldie at March 16, 2009 11:06 AM

Has anybody tried that new "Club your own Seal" restaurant on Smith Street?

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 16, 2009 11:08 AM

biff - that's an old one that's been put to bed by most (mainstreamers at least). he was referring to the specific battle tactic, not the entire war.

oh god monday is too early for politics. but at least you can drink it away tomorrow

Posted by: goldie at March 16, 2009 11:08 AM

goldie....D'Artagnan sells both french and American foi gras. The American is, of course, cheaper. There's another company and I think its called Hudson River.

Unfortunately, I also love veal.

And, deep down I'm a republican. But I did vote for Obama.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 11:09 AM

I knew that, dave :-) I have quite a few republican friends actually. I really do separate the GOP of the last 15 years from the GOP of the past. Once the words "Moral Majority" became a catchphrase, it was all downhill. But I still admire Republicans like Barry Goldwater. Reagan- not much.

benson- can we not argue about this? I'm grouchy this morning :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 11:13 AM

Thanks to all for the congrats. :)

BRG - we actually got married in November but had to wait for the honeymoon til we had vacation time to take it!

Now to get used to this new reality where everyone's friends with The What ...

DIBS - Let's see, among other things I rode 130 ft below the water in a submarine, traversed a giant lava flow, snorkeled three huge coral reefs, visited Honolulu's Chinatown, explored Oahu's north-shore surfing mecca, and drank my weight in umbrella drinks.

Posted by: cwbuecheler at March 16, 2009 11:13 AM

Snark, I'll have to admit, I've never had seal. I like alot of his music though.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 11:15 AM

Touchy, touchy, touchy!!!

In other good news......

This week Rupert Murdoch's New Corp. purchased our local paper chain Courier Life.

Way to go Rupert!! Keep expanding the empire while the NYT is selling off assets, mortgaging their headquarters and concentrating on such "vital" issues such as what is going on in a candy store on Putnam Ave. and what locale is the "new" Brooklyn.

Posted by: benson at March 16, 2009 11:15 AM

The What was even making jokes about being a Jewish woman married to a black man.

I think he and I had some civil exchanges too.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 11:17 AM

really, cwb. It sounds like you had a truly awful time but somehow I can't bring myself to feel sorry for you :-) (congrats!)

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 11:17 AM

CWB;

Congratulations!!!

Posted by: benson at March 16, 2009 11:19 AM

Yes, The What is showing a soft side.
I think tomorrow he's going to wear a T-shirt: Kiss me I'm Irish.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 11:19 AM

bxgrl - hah! I swear I'm not trying to make people jealous (ok, maybe a little).

Posted by: cwbuecheler at March 16, 2009 11:20 AM

You can club your own seal, but that doesn't make it good eats.

Posted by: jawbreaker at March 16, 2009 11:20 AM

"Benson, you are a brave soul!"

Or he's just angling for a beat down! RALLY THE TROOPS! [I'm kidding benson! : P ]

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 11:21 AM

goldie, I realize that. My point is that anyone who wants to bring up broken promises and despicable actions of the current President needs to be prepared to defend the unfortunately endless examples of those that were committed by the last President, who should be convicted of crimes against humanity.

Ok, please more talk of umbrella drinks now! cwb, congrats to you and the Mrs.

Actually, given she is likely lurking here, congrats to you too, Mrs. Cwb.

I'd love to see a "Battle Seal" on Iron Chef America. I bet they have it on Iron Chef Japan...along with "Battle Whale" and "Battle Kitten" on Iron Chef Korea.

There, I've introduced the cat discussion.

From this point forward we have to question cw's sanity since he made the decision to come back to Brooklyn from hawaii.

THL, how were the anniversary celebrations Friday night?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 11:25 AM

Don't see why criticism of Obama should automatically require having to defend Bush.
Seems like all Obama has done so far is propose higher taxes and more spending. Bush was bad on spending as well, but at least seemed to have some concept of whose money it was.

Posted by: etson at March 16, 2009 11:25 AM

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 11:27 AM

good morning to you too gemini! [such a welcoming!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 11:28 AM

benson- oh no. YOu didn't say that. Murdoch will make the brooklyn paper into a crap rag like the Post. Please don't get me started on him - I've mentioned several times how the Post ruined the organization I worked for with lies and innuendo and after the damage was done, they printed a retraction. Something according to their lawyers they never ever do. From the poor to non-existent quality of their "journalism" to the rabid rightwing, racist nutjobs they have in editorial I can't imagine how someone with your intellignece gives them a second thought.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 11:29 AM

etson, invoking McCain and the Republican Party does invite comparisons. I have no issue if someone wants to assess Obama's performance without reference to his former opponent.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 11:30 AM

yes, etson. He knew it was taxpayer money so he had no problem spending it while allowing his buddies to rake it in. I think the situation is far more complex than the way you put it.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 11:32 AM

Biff, we had a great time. Tried some fantastic wines, ate some killer food then rolled home suitably stuffed and stewed. The rest? A lady never tells!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 11:34 AM

Also etson, you don't think what the present admisntration is doing is unrelated to what the Bush administraton did? It's all tied together- Obama wasn't handed a clean slate here.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 11:39 AM

Fair enough, Biff. I am a conservative on most issues but have been pretty disgusted by some politicians on both sides in the past few years. I did vote Republican in the last election (my first), but without much enthusiasm for Bush or McCain, just a belief that the alternative was / is worse.

Rob? My guess is he's been maulded and eaten by that poor hungry cat!

gemini- we have some beautiful kittens- we rescue the ferals and try to find homes for them. If we can't we are going to have to put them in a shelter (which will kill me!). The latest littles are very sweet- one is a very lovely grey/beige tabby and the other is almost a tortie. Both very sweet and we've been handling them a lot so they are not feral (they were born in MM's house so they are clean and very healthy. Let us know if you might be interested.

benson- wouldn't you just love one? :-)

I think wasder might be interested, but I'm trying to do TNR -one of the outdoor cats has some gorgeous kittens too but they are feral and don't know if I could catch them.

Bxgrl;

I didn't say that I hate cats, I said that I hate CAT DISCUSSIONS!!!!!!!!

sounds great, but am in the middle of selling my house - so I don't want to freak them out too much with people coming in and then we have to pack and move to a new place, now's probably not ideal for me or new kitties - and I would totally take an older cat - it doesn't have to be a kitten
good luck -do you have pics?!?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 12:07 PM

Bxgrl,

I'm working to hook up with some TNR (Trap Neuter Release) programs here in Jersey City. Jersey City's stray cat population is none I've ever seen before. It's quite staggering. Particularly because I live in close proximity to a 273 acre park. It's really sad.

Here's a list of some TNR resourses in New York:

I thought women were born with it??? No??? I wouldn't know.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 12:09 PM

I thought TNR was something sordid like CBT, S&M, 420 or PNP.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 12:10 PM

I made a frivolous comment on the New Brooklyn thread. (As opposed to my usual profound and insightful comments, that is).

Dave, It's the humane version of CBT.

I'm having a very difficult time arranging my evening activities this week with the commitment to the Thursday get-together.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 12:15 PM

MM has several older ones- I'll ask her to post pics. there is a very lovely calico and a tortie as well as an avidly affectionate red and white tabby who is a whore for love. And some others too. We're desperate to find them homes before we have to put them in a shelter and right now it seems only CACC is taking any and they still do euthanasia which is a heartbreak. You don't have to decide this minute- get yourself settled first- enjoy the new place!

benson- I have an awful story like that too but my parents finally gave in and let me have a kitten. If you adopt one we'll stop talking about them! ;)

snappy- "fuzzball of love?" benson?? benson???!!

Bxgirl, I'm still mad at you over the "Tiara Incident of 2009"! Harumph!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 12:17 PM

Sorry...I got it slightly wrong...its been over 30 years since we sang it out on Lake George...

In the merry month of May when the lambs did sport and play,
I went to take a walk around the town.|
I met a pretty miss and politely asked her this:
"Will you let me wind your little ball of yarn?"

Chorus:

Ball of yarn, ball of yarn,
It was then I wound her little ball of yarn.
Ball of yarn, ball of yarn,
It was then I wound her little ball of yarn.

With my arm about her waist, we went to a quiet place,
And I gently laid her down upon the grass.
While the birdies and the bees did the same among the trees,
She let me wind her little ball of yarn.

It was shortly after this I went out to take a piss
And to see if she had done me any harm
With her crack beneath her lap, she had given me the clap
When she let me wind her little ball of yarn.

It was nine months after that in a bar room where I sat,
A policeman put his hand upon my arm.
Said the officer in blue, "Now, young man, we're after you
Just for winding up that little ball of yarn."

To the judge straightway we went, and I offered to repent,
But the judge said, "I do not give a darn.
Guilty in the first degree! To the penitentiary
Just for winding up that little ball of yarn."

In the jailhouse I sit with my fingers dipped in shit,
And the bedbugs play billiards with my balls.
And the women as they pass stick their hatpins up my ass
Just for winding up that little ball of yarn.

Snappy,

C & B refer to things you'd find in the male netheregion.

T is what you do to them. It's related to S&M.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 12:20 PM

Ask me what CBT is at the party. I won't comment on that here. The "T" stands for torture. And you have neither a "C" or any "Bs"

I am so NOT getting into that Hoyt St./Cusack thread. She annoys me no end. Although, she has done a lot of good for the neighborhood and I do like her artwork. But really, she's in the paper all the time, does her kid work at the NYT?

Gemini, I know Wayne. It's definitely grown on me. It was really hard to decide to leave Brooklyn. I was there over a decade and have such ties there. Bottom line was I wanted this kind of house and I couldn't get it there ($$$$). Besides, I was shocked to find out how much better the commute ended up being.

Thanks Bxgrl, I'm going to a community meeting about it later this month.
I handled the strays from our backyard by taking one in. Then we T&N the other two but we couldn't bring ourselves to R! So now we went from having 2 cats to having 5 cats!! The big problem is that there are no free programs here. You have to personally pony up the funds.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 12:29 PM

I see the cat talk will go on.
Anyone do anything interesting this weekend?

I went to:
St. John the Divine (I haven't been since they re-opened)
Hispanic Society (one of my favorite Plaza's in NYC)
Morris Jumel Mansion (you'll feel like you're on top of Manhattan)
Cloisters (I hadn't been there in years...still amazing)

And all I spent was $6.

THL - my commute from Grove Street to midtown Manhattan - maybe 35 mins with all the walking included
now - an hour in the morning and 1.15 mins on the way home

You can get the same style home in that part of Jersey city for hundreds of thousands less, right? - I remember that being the case when I left in 2003.
I lived on Wayne close to those Dixon Mills condos -in a huge 1 BR in a brownstone for $1000

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 12:35 PM

Gemini,

I've fallen in love with the porch on this house. I'm sure you'll recognize it. It's right around the corner from Wayne on Mercer. It's a little obstructed in this pic by the wreath but I'm sure you can discern the gorgeous old wrought iron work.

Dave, had you thought about making him choose?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 12:58 PM

Why would I do that, Snappy. It got brought up originally because I was allergic to them but have largely gotten over that because of my friend, Al Buterol.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 1:00 PM

Let us speak with Mrs. wasder. I'm sure our charm and diplomatic nature will win her over to the dark side :-)

Of course you could really be mean and simply show up at home with an utterly adorable kitten who looks up at you with those big big eyes, mews piteously and reaches out with those tiny little paws...awwwww.

(the downside is that the adorable kitten will be comfortably ensconced in your house as you recover in the hospital).

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 1:01 PM

Legal Grounds? Yes.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 1:01 PM

Back when I was dating my husband I was panicked that if he broke up with me I'd never see his cats again. Amazing how much of a concern that was for me.

"Of course you could really be mean and simply show up at home with an utterly adorable kitten who looks up at you with those big big eyes, mews piteously and reaches out with those tiny little paws...awwwww."

Albuterol and various other allergy meds are my friends as well :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 1:05 PM

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 1:05 PM

Wasder, I'm going to take pix of the kittens today, and post a link here. No one will be able to resist them, as they are at maximum cuteness. I hope you, or some other caring individuals will want them. They aren't weaned yet, and are about 3 1/2 weeks old.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 16, 2009 1:05 PM

Or better yet bxgrl--give the cat to my three year old to carry inside and tell mama how much she loves it...

Posted by: wasder at March 16, 2009 1:05 PM

I would have one here in brooklyn but I'm gone from friday morning until monday evening almost every weekend. A four day litter box is just too much!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 1:06 PM

All it takes is about 10-15 seconds of holding a sleeping kitty like a baby and the luv sets in :) There's no going back after that!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 1:06 PM

A four day litter box is only bad if you feed them the cheapo crap. Get two and they will be fine.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 1:07 PM

I am a complete cat nut but my wife is quite the opposite. She is a clean freak and can't deal with the concept of living with a litter box...

Posted by: wasder at March 16, 2009 1:08 PM

Wasder, you could spring for one of those fancy self-cleaning litter boxes, or, take the time and toilet train the cat!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 1:10 PM

THL- what do you mean Legal Grounds? what happened?
hahah

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 1:11 PM

My goddaughter who was 4 stayed with us this past summer for a little and she LOVED my cats. She loved them so hard I was scared for their safety. She'd just dive after them with crushing hugs. I explained the right way to love on them without injuring them. So she turns and says to the old boy cat, "I'm sorry grandpa cat, I won't break you"

Dave- Surgical masks.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 1:11 PM

The coffee house? Legal Grounds?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 1:12 PM

"She loved them so hard I was scared for their safety."

THL, that's a funny and descriptive phrase. My kids often love each other so hard that what starts out as a hug often ends up in fisticuffs and tears. (Fisticuffs for them and tears for me!)

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 1:14 PM

"I would have one here in brooklyn but I'm gone from friday morning until monday evening almost every weekend. A four day litter box is just too much!!!"

Dave, you can get *Rob* to come over on the weekends and clean the litter box and Monday morning he'd come on here and talk about Cat Poo.
It would be the ideal world!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 1:15 PM

Ding, ding, ding! Poo has been mentioned - someone cross that off the list!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 1:17 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 1:18 PM

You missed the part about Rob stepping in the litter box and getting cat poo on his shoes and then slipping and falling on the big hill that is Park Slope.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 1:18 PM

Hey Dave, are you willing to pay for the service? I need a job, dammit! Me-Available! Go get kitties so I can start!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 1:20 PM

Biff, I always remember when we were kids and would be going batsh^t crazy hysterical laughing about something my mom would always yell, "What are you up to?" To which we'd answer with the definitive "Nothing!" She's holler back, "whenever you guys are laughing like this cryings only minutes behind!"

She was so right. She always knew just when the laughing had crested and pandemonium was about to take over and leave one if not all injured.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 16, 2009 1:21 PM

^^^^aaah, just forget it!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 2:15 PM

Let's discuss, snappy :-) Perhaps we can come to an agreement.

I remember those crayons btw. The name gave me the creeps- I wouldn't use it. Besdies I thought people looked so much better in blue-green and red-orange. I guess I really wasn't that aware until I grew older because I went to such a mixed school and lived in a project that was mixed. We went to each other's houses and my parents never paid a second thought to who the kids were so long as they knew them and we were in classes together.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 2:16 PM

ok off to a pretend budget meeting where we all say how shocking it is to send "X" artist and their band to do promo but it still gets approved!

TTYAL!!!!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 16, 2009 2:18 PM

Dave, I won't be at Floyd's so you simply must post the pic!! I wanna see! I promise not to laugh...too hard!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 2:19 PM

Dave, Scan them and alter your face. And if you want I can put them up on my 'bayridgegirl' webshots account.
Same for anybody else, we all have embarrassing hair moments, let's see what you got.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 2:21 PM

Try being the only black girl in the school, and then joining Brownies, the junior Girl Scouts. You can imagine what simple young minds did with that. Come to think of it, some of their simple parents had a thing or two to say, as well.

I also hated "flesh" colored crayons.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 16, 2009 2:23 PM

Auuuuughhhhh! Did anyone see the last quote in the NYT story about $3,000 brunches? A finance guy said they would have given up their cheesy excess, but then the government gave them $10 billion. AAAUUUUGH! I was skeptical about the bailout and now I say OFF WITH THEIR HEADS.

Meanwhile, we passed on the house in Ocean Hill that we were deliberating over for four months. It was HOTD in 2007 and dropped in price from $630,000 to $439,000. I think it might disappear soon in some insider deal. I wish someone here would snap it up and save it.

Congrats, CW. How wonderful!

BRG, I'm going through the photo vault...I'll let you know what I find...

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 2:25 PM

If my bf or my Sister-in-law can send it i will bring it. I don't know how to do anything photoshop so i can't white out the face. Besides, the face is the best part!!!!

Hey Benson - which cruise line?

Snappy, you mentioned you are a lawyer seeking work. I thought you might want to see this, if you haven't already:

Thanks ENY. I've been trying to hunt down some public interest jobs, but that seems to be a hard find as well. But thanks for the link :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 16, 2009 2:49 PM

I hope this thread gets kick started by the time I come back from getting some hot, smooth, black coffee.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 2:59 PM

Friday's Open Thread has spoiled us all. Since when did we ever have to worry about kick-starting a thread that already had 240 posts?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 3:02 PM

Ok, B'Stoners...prepare yourself for a laugh. Here I am at age 4 just before a modeling shoot in Chicago.

I have not read much of this thread today, but just logged on and caught the tail end post from ENY to Snappy. I understand (really understand) that pro bono work is not paid work, but thought I'd post these two links. Snappy, this morning there was a very brief headline on WNYC radio that the NYC corporation counsel is welcoming pro bono attorneys who find themselves between jobs:

ENY;

Princess Lines. We've taken them once before, and were very pleased. The food, service and crowd are quite nice. Carnival Cruises tend to be a floating frat party, so I avoid them. I've heard that Holland America tends to be a bit too traditional and stuffy.

One thing I really appreciate about Princess is that they don't nickel and dime you on the extra stuff. For instance, cocktails tend to go for about $6, and it's easy to find a $5 blackjack table in the casino (as opposed to Atlantic City, where one must gamble at 4 in the morning to find a table with these stakes).

The other good thing about the Princess Cruise is that it takes off from the new Red Hook terminal. I can almost walk there from my place!

No one has commented on the suit and tie yet!!!!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 3:28 PM

gemini10:
I've been feeding the feral cats in the neighborhood. One is very friendly - it must have belonged to someone and got used to people - and when the weather got bad I let it inside. BIG mistake! I can't bear to force it to stay outside all the time, although it goes out to use the toilet and play.

I have serious allergies and asthma and had to get rid of my cats when I moved here in 2006 so no cat hair would be in the new place. (There are newspapers laid out everywhere that the cat sleeps now.) Am desperate to find a home for this very smart and friendly cat (but not a pest) who is easy to take care of. My neighbor thinks she saw him up the street as a kitten and that he's about 2 years old.

Please e-mail me if you can take him (or her, but I think it's a male cat who's been neutered) or want to see a photo. He's one of those black with some white "tuxedo" cats. I could keep him until you're ready. send message to me at janaroz@yahoo.com

Good luck with your move!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 3:36 PM

"Also, that guy I slept with who's on here is going to get a real laugh!!!!"

This might be a better mystery than the identity of all the "Miss" logins.

Can we play 20 questions? It the guy in question a regular on this blog?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 16, 2009 3:37 PM

Who did you boink Dave? Oh never mind. I know you won't tell.

Snappy, you were soooo cute and a much better dresser than DIBS.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 16, 2009 3:39 PM

He's not a regular. He just bought a place not too long ago. I'll never divulge his login. That wouldn't be right.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 16, 2009 3:39 PM

Wow- this is fun! I have to dig out a photo of me and my twin sister- we almost look like cobble and her brother- except of course my sister is missing his...ah....equipment :-)

And you should also ask Denton for some high school pics- they are well worth the wait!

Great pictures! Snappy, I can definitely relate.

Biff, that looks like a Ralph Lauren ad. :)

Cobble, how cute!

Wasder, I bet you were VERY popular.

Dave, that is the classic 70's shot. There is not a single natural fiber on your body, either.

I have to scan in something appropriate, yet identity hiding. I'll see what I can come up with.

Ok, here's my entire high school graduating class. Find me.

LOL, MM! I think I found you by process of elimination!

are you the one with long straight blonde hair

Posted by: bxgrl at March 16, 2009 6:56 PM

Bxgrl-(snort!) No, I'm the one standing up.

I'm looking at this picture, and realized we only had 8 guys in our class. Slim pickings, and another reason why we didn't have a senior prom.

Wow MM, that's quite an American portrait there.

What do you understand What? Where's your photo! C'mon...

Since everybody is sharing, here's a snapshot of me and my best pal back in the 70s:

I see you Montrose!

Posted by: mopar at March 16, 2009 10:27 PM

Why, thanks, What. I understand you, as well.

MM, you have to share that BEFORE everyone leaves for the evening! Were 95% of the classmates redheads, or is that just the tinting of the picture?
