First!

Did anyone catch Jon Stewart wiping the floor with Jim Cramer last night?
(If not, it’s here - http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/index.jhtml?episodeId=220533 )

It’s not up there with his funniest (although I never find him not amusing) but it is very important. It’s quite sad when a comedian/entertainer is the one asking the questions that the serious reporters should have.

"It's quite sad when a comedian/entertainer is the one asking the questions that the serious reporters should have."

Hm, what's the phrase? Oh yeah — WORD!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 9:20 AM

before i post... just want to say the whole "first!" thing is really lame. i think most people could easily have been the first person to post, but like most, hello, civilized people they dont spout the first thing out of their mouths.

What is everyone doing for the weekend? I am on a hardcore mission! I am on triple duty for the next week since my roommate and his boyfriend are leaving today for Spain.. I have to take care of my dog, my roommate's dog, AND go feed my roommate's cat in prospect heights! I met the cat last night. I'm not a cat person but this cat rocks. he's kind of obese tho, but he's playful. Most cats seem to run from me, he didn't. It shouldn't be difficult. He said to feed him on saturday, monday, and wednesday (they get back next thursday). Can cats eat every other day? I feel bad.. I said i'd be willing to go every day (he paid me 100 bux) but he said no no he is obese anyway and can lose the weight. He told me not to put the food in a dish cuz the cat will eat it too fast but just to open the can and put the can on the floor. (?) These are teeny tiny cans btw like tuna fish can size, maybe smaller. I couldn't imagine living on a small tuna fish sized-amount of food every other day.. Should I give him more and go everyday, or just listen to instructions? I guess listen to his instructions makes the most sense.

On a related note we went to a bar in my boyfriend's neighborhood and it turned out to be right around the corner from my ex boyfriend's new apartment :( i called him and was like hey im around the corner come over but he never call back or came over hahahah. im such a L. this bar made the BEST grilled cheese sandwiches tho! tons and tons of jalapeno peppers in it! The bad part of the night came when i saw a ms. pac man machine (tabletop woo!) and my roommate and I challenged each other. I was like oh yeah I can beat you, easily! (i have a prominent ms pac man tattoo and everyone assumes im good at ms pacman and im good but i still suck i can barely get into the blue level without losing a life in the arcade and can make it to the pear level usually in the arcade but barely the banana level). I was raised on playing ms pacman on the super nintendo and sega genesis where you can put it on easy. Anyway, he kicked my AZZ! So for the next week while he is on vacation my goal is to get so good at ms. pac man that i can beat him hahaha. i told him that he only won cuz he's 40 and that he probably had lots of practice back in the day when they had real arcades. (he agreed).

this is going to be one rough week for me!!!! caring for 3 animals AND trying not be a ms pacman poser!!!

OMG i just read that Six Flags is going bankrupt. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! some of my best memories ever are from great adventure in jersey!!!

Posted by: dittoburg at March 13, 2009 9:32 AM

oooooh something of value i can ask..

i picked up a wooden piece of furniture (it had a sign on free to good home, etc) so it doesnt have bed bugs or roaches or anything. my roommate helped me carry it in last night. might replace our regular coffee table with it.. it's like plain wood and it smells like wood. i want to polish it up.. if i cleaned it down would that be enough or would i have to sand it before putting like varnish on it? i think they sell colored varnishes right? like if i wanted to paint it a color but still have the look of the wood, is that possible? using a regular paint brush? i cant believe i dont know this, but i dont want to mess it up.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at March 13, 2009 9:33 AM

rob...that's a question more appropriate for the Forum. :)

Sand it and use a polyurethane sealer with a stain in it. If you can get the gel ones they are better.

I saw the Jon Stewart interview and thought it was good, but I think he's a little off if he thinks the CNBC people are "reporters". They have a couple of reporters and then a lot of disc jockeys who are on the air for 4-hour shifts. To muddle the analogy, it's like blaming the play-by-play announcers for the steroid era.

I do think Jim Cramer has a better grasp of what shady stuff goes on in hedge funds and the like -- having participated -- than most people there, and does call them out here and there.

I think he should have been talking to Mark Hoffman or any of the other higher ups at CNBC about getting more reporters on staff. Altho maybe there's no drama in that.

Posted by: Ringo at March 13, 2009 9:50 AM

Larry Kudlow for Senator.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 9:52 AM

rob- they have color stains so the wood shows through- look for one of those. And re the cat- I would at least check on him everyday. No matter how obese it isn't good for any animal to be starved for a day. And obese cats are at risk for diabetes so this eat/starve cycle is really unheathy. How much food are you supposed to give him?

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 9:55 AM

Hah, Cramer said he wants indictments.

To quote the Cops theme song, "Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?"

Mayne Cramer and Bernie can share a cell.

> "It’s quite sad when a comedian/entertainer is the one

Agreed. It was lovely seeing Cramer skewered by his own words. The man is a crook and a sociopath, even by Wall Street standards.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 13, 2009 9:57 AM

If the cat is obese he should be on a reduced calorie diet from the vet but that may be asking too much of the owner. Yes, the eat/starve cycle is unhealthy but so is store-bought cat food if the cat is obese!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 9:58 AM

The Chicken;

Good morning! Do you sleep, or are you up all hours of the night? I saw that your last post in the Furman thread was at 4 AM.

Last night I "regrouped" my thoughts, and have some further comments about Finance Guy's analysis. Please check it out in the Furman thread. I hope that Finance Guy comes back to take a look at it.

Montrose;

I think you were confused yesterday about my post in the Furman thread. I wasn't referring to you, but rather to Miss Muffet. Henceforth, I'm going to refrain from using "MM" to avoid this confusion!

Posted by: benson at March 13, 2009 9:58 AM

ugh now im all worried about the cat. he is obese. it's a regular store bought food can, the size of a tuna fish can (smaller maybe?) he said just come every other day and leave the can on the floor and it will be fine. honestly, can any other cat owners say if this is okay? im sure people do this all the time, but i dont want anything bad to happen to the cat, and im sure he loves the cat and knows what's best but still. im dealing with a 16 year old blind/deaf beagle who pees nonstop, an obese cat across town, and my pitbull lol. who knew a pitbull would be the easiest thing to take care of hahahah.

maybe i will just stop by everyday and give him a can of food. he's a sweet cat and i'll just chill there for an hour and play with him and listen to music or something. (do cats get lonely when their owners are away?) my roommate's boyfriend sleeps at our place every night so i think he's used to being alone at night, but i think he works from home during the day so he must be used to company. i dont know. im frazzled now thinking about handling 3 animals all by myself. welcome to adulthood i guess!

(thank god im gay. could you imagine if i had three kids!?!)

Posted by: PitbullNYC at March 13, 2009 10:03 AM

rob...for 3 or 4 days the cat will be fine. Don't worry.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 10:06 AM

"The man is a crook and a sociopath, even by Wall Street standards."

WOW!!!!

Is this serious??? I find Cramer to be a clown, and I don't think I've ever watched more than 10 seconds of his show before moving on. However, to call him a crook and sociopath seems beyond the pale. The man is an entertainer.

Two thoughts: freedom of speech, and Caveat Emptor. Best way to deal with guys like Cramer.

BTW: a little bit of trivia: Cramer and former Governor Spitzer were best pals at Harvard.

the eat/starve routine is really bad. my father is an old cat lady with 4 cats. he used to only feed them every 2 days because he thought they "looked fat". one of the cats began binging from all the dishes on feed day because he knew that he wouldn't be fed for the 2 next days. ugg the cat would ALWAYS get sick afterwards and barf. like a bolemic. it was so sad, but my father just thought it was cute. thankfully my mother intervened and broke his habit (only took her 4 years...!) and now the kitties get 1/2 cup twice a day with no more puking.

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 13, 2009 10:11 AM

Yeah - feeding a cat every other day will be fine. It won't be happy, but he will survive.

Just to be safe I would leave a water bowl near the food, just in case it gets into a funk and decides it no longer likes toilet water.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 13, 2009 10:12 AM

Cats do get lonely so spend a little time with him. When I take care of my neighbor's cats I do that. I hope that isn't how the owner feeds him- 1 can every other day. thats horrible for the cat. And the food goes bad- would you want to eat tuna that was sitting out for a day and a night?

Why don't you feed him half a can a day- that way he gets the whole can but spread out. Keep the other half refrigerated. And please please please put in in a dish- cans have really sharp edges and cats mouths can get cut from them- jeez, I'm getting upset.

I want to take this cat from the guy. YOu don't treat an animal like that. So rob- you're a sweetie for caring so much about the cat. The owner does not know how to take care of an animal. What he's doing is cruel and if it was effective the cat wouldn't be obese.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 10:13 AM

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 10:17 AM

dh- would you like to be fed only every other day and the food is left out overnight. Sorry, no- it's not ok. And if it won't be happy, why do it? Why even take responsibility for an animal if you won't care for it properly ? (Not referring to you personally, the generic "you")

bxgrl - absolutley not! and trust me, when I watch my friends' cats I go there every other day, give them fresh food and water and sit down and pet them for at least a half hour.

But to cause oneself anxiety over potentially killing it isn't necessary.

And please, we know our cats - if they aren't cared for properly in our absence they will let us know when we return and make us pay!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 13, 2009 10:21 AM

"If the cat is obese he should be on a reduced calorie diet from the vet but that may be asking too much of the owner. Yes, the eat/starve cycle is unhealthy but so is store-bought cat food if the cat is obese!!!!"

I agree with Dave (that's probably what's keeping him fat) and would like to add that if the cat MUST drink from the toilet bowl at least flush it every day so that he's getting fresh(ish) water. Personally, I'd be feeding him every day too or at least leaving a bowl of dry food out for him to eat on the "off cycle" days. I also wouldn't tell the owner that I'd done it either I'd just but the extra food and do it. The flip side is cats technically can go without food for a few days and live. Not recommended, but he'd survive.

Also, don't be surprised if he hides out or gets a little aggressive with you if dad's not there. They do get lonely and usually withdraw a little bit. Cat's take longer than dogs to trust. So maybe sit and watch TV if you want to keep him company but don't be offended if he's a little bit leery of you or hisses (don't be scared it's how they tell you they're nervous since they can't bark). He'll let you know.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 13, 2009 10:23 AM

It has begun...

Jobless Rate Above 10% Defines Recession as Bernanke Predicted

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aFPHiiinVQpA&refer=home

At least 4.4 million jobs have been claimed by the U.S. recession that began in December 2007, cutting across the country and the economy. Positions have been eliminated by employers as diverse as Microsoft Corp., KB Toys Inc., Dartmouth College and the nonprofit organization that produces “Sesame Street.”

The unemployment rate was just 6.1 precent in Oct 08 and now it's 10%?? That's a 40% increase in just 5 months!

The collapse of the Mutant Asset Bubble is accelerating infecting all aspects of our economic system and with a insolvent Banking System I think they will declare a Depression in the first quarter of 2010.

This a note we have entered the second worse Bear Market in history and we are on course to match the Great Depression. Anyone still believe that housing prices will hold up in Brownstone Brooklyn???

The What (Have a another skittle)

Someday this war is gonna end...

I highly recommended that everyone watch it. It was a real eye opener.

http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/index.jhtml?episodeId=220533

I wonder if this will cause anyone at those financial news networks to change their tune.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 10:29 AM

Posted by: Ringo at March 13, 2009 9:50 AM

This is certainly an argument against today's 24 hour news cycle and the need to fill dead air.

It's fine to regurgitate basic facts but I think there is a gaping hole for some more in-depth investigative journalism. One could argue that this is partly the job of the analyst (whether sell-side or buy-side).

One thing that Fidelity used to do when I was a sell-side analyst (and they probably still do it today) was to invite both a Bull and a Bear on a particular stock to a lunch meeting and have a semi-formal debate. Both analysts have the chance to present their case, followed by some Q&A.

I think something similar in a television format could make for some interesting viewing as long as they got "colourful" analysts. Anybody know anything about pitching ideas to the networks?

Posted by: the chicken at March 13, 2009 10:30 AM

"What did you have for lunch, chicken?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 10:21 AM"

Jerk chicken and dirty rice (yes, really!). I usually reheat whatever my wife had for her dinner the previous evening.

Posted by: the chicken at March 13, 2009 10:32 AM

"I want his wife to walk the plank too."

His wife would just be the beginning...there are how many other people involved in this? Bernie is doing his best not to have to reveal a thing himself with the guilty plea. Forcing the govt to figure it out for themselves, but if Bernie were truly repentent, and I believe he is not, he would tell the whole g*dforsaken story and come clean and the others would step forward.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 10:33 AM

Nahhhhhhhhhh...

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 10:34 AM

DH- my cats make me pay if I get up a little later than usual and don't immediately attend to their needs.

And dave- I would love to go out and slaughter a few cows and chickens (oops- sorry Chicken!) to feed my horde but the Great EVLL would object to her basement being used in such a manner. I can't really agree with what is making the cat obese- if its not thin on a can of tuna every other day something else is the problem. It's still a cruel way to treat an animal.

Rob- really, cats are notoriously easy to care for, so long as you keep your maid's uniform neat and tidy, and when they ask for their paper and slippers you hop to it at once. Oh and a few skritches under the chin do not hurt. And try whispering a few endearments- don't forget the catnip toys and fluff the featherbed whle ou're at it. See? easy.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 10:34 AM

thanks for all the cat advice. :) i wasnt keen on the idea of him eating out of the can either. i ate out of a can once and cut my own tongue so i know what youre talking about bxgirl. im going to listen to the owner tho and go every other day and make sure there is fresh water in a bowl on the floor even tho he said he can drink from the toilet. he said not to worry about the litterbox. how often do you change that? they are gone exactly like a week. that's gotta smell after a week? im going to change it on my second visit. if the cat isnt a freakazoid tomorrow ill probably just stop by once a day and sit and read for an hour or something.

A Pisces man can be everything you want him to be- or everything you don't want him to be. A tide in his affairs is synonymous with opportunity. It requires a firm decision, determined action, and the ability to drown any old, soggy dreams that prevent success. The trouble is that some Pisces men never recognize that tide at its flood, even when it sloshes over their feet.

The Pisces man isn't weak. It's just that he may linger too long on a fading, silver star, and miss the bright sun¡©light of success. Not all Pisceans are gentle dreamers. But more of them than you can scatter with a pebble are. However, there is hope. There's always hope, where there's life. Although the world needs his lovely imagination only too desperately, there comes a time when the Pisces male has to go about the business of earning his potatoes. When he does that, he has a snap of it, because the Neptune intuition coupled with his clever mind can turn him toward sensible goals which could bring him fame and recog¡©nition-even wealth and immortality. If not all that (you can't hit the jackpot every time), then at least respectability and comfortable security. Let's hope that's the kind of Pisces male you're sailing with. Practically no other Sun sign can stop his potential under those circumstances.

Snark and THL;

Oh come on! Jon Stewart complaining about CNBC is like the kettle calling the pot black. As the Chicken points out, both trade in the 24 news/infotainment industry. Chicken hits the nail right on the head: if you want to put a stop to this, turn the dial off, and turn to some serious investigative journalism.

Snark, my comment regarding Cramer being a clown pertained to his "Mad Money" show. Anyone who takes this show seriously has no business investing in the first place. Better to put their money in CD's.

As for the video, he is not taling about his show, he's talking about his "tricks of the trade" as a hedge-fund manager. So what? Imagine that, someone with a postion in a stock trying to move the market via "spreading the word" !! I'm SHOCKED!!

I think folks are losing their heads here. Putting Mdoff aside, who's getting his just desserts, how did hedge-fund managers get the rap for this economy (shout-out to DIBS). They were not the ones involved with this mortgage mess. Look to the symbiotic relationship between the banks and the government for that one (see: Fannie Mae and their army of lobbyists).

The cool thing is we had a very small reception in a wine cellar at a restaurant. So we get to go back each year to have our wedding night dinner (we did last year too).

Let's just hope the place stays in business for years to come!

dave- if you have 2 they're fine for a couple of days- so long as you leave out dry food (yes- there are gourmet brands ) and water. MM has 2 lovely little ones- if wasder isn't still thinking of them. Cats are better in pairs actually. Hordes are like kitty cossacks.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 10:58 AM

benson, you're right. At the last gathering someone asked me if I didn't think hedge funds were responsible. I kind of ducked the question, not wanting to get into a lengthy discussion.

hedge funds come and go. Most of them actually have protected their clients money in the downturn to a greater degree than you may think. Its ONLY the bad one's you are hearing about.

Ponzi schemes are ponzi schemes, they come in all forms. 99% of the hedge funds operate within the law. You may agree or disagree that some of the laws need to be changed but thats a different issue.

A lot of hedge funds got blown up with the closing of their prime broker (Bear Stearns or Lehman. The biggest part of this mess was created by easy money which many of the hedge funds took advantage of.

There are no hedge funds seeking or receiving TARP, TALF or any other free handout.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 10:59 AM

Dave,

Get two they'll keep each other company. Then just keep them on a dry food diet and find someone to feed them on Saturdays.

They'll be fine. At the very least much finer than living in a shelter :(

Oh My God, Dave. That is so weirdly like me it freaked me out. Thanks for this though. With my big exhibition coming up I hope and believe that the second part of this equation is coming to fruition. Connect the dots, Benson.

Cramer describes how to manipulate the market.

Cramer is given a TV show to manipulate a wider audience.

Do you believe he is not somehow profiting from his pronouncements?

I agree with you that anybody watching his show and taking his advice is a fool.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 11:17 AM

Cramer is not stupid, despite what people here might think. I would be quite surprised if he and the CNBC lawyers haven't done everything possible to ensure his providing investment advice isn't contravening any securities laws. I also suspect he's not trading in his personal account any stocks that he discussed on the show. It would just be way too easy to nab him if he was.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 11:19 AM

The people that call in to Cramer's show remind me of the E*trade baby in the highchair.

yay dog talk!

so my dog will finally be sleeping with me this week. question for you. if you had a dog for a long time who always chose, given the option, to sleep with someone else, would you be offended and love him the same? i am in that situation. my dog sleeps every single night with my roommate and his boyfriend downstairs. at first i missed him, but now i actually don't and prefer him to sleep with them. part of me thinks it's cuz they have a huge bed and i sleep on an uncomfortable pleather futon/couch hybrid kind of thing. i dont know. my dog likes to always sleep with people, but always no matter where ive lived he prefers to sleep with someone else. it's not like snore or fart in my sleep or anything. (i do talk in my sleep tho ahhaha. a LOT! and grind my teeth) but i cant imagine that bothering a dog.

my roommates dog chooses to sleep in a beanbag (not the same beanbag i relax in tho! ew) in the living room alone.

who here sleeps with their dogs?

I must chime in on the fat-cat question. Cats are carnivores, and we feed them cat food, which is mostly cereal (grains, carbs). It's no mystery why they're fat and diabetic. If I had a cat, I would feed it tuna or chicken or livers or something like that. Not cereal. Which probably also makes their blood sugar go up and down. Poor, poor things.

Cobgrats!

I turned 40 last Sunday. I've already put the deposit on a red Maserati.

Posted by: dittoburg at March 13, 2009 11:53 AM

Mopar,

Cat's should eat about 5% carbs. This emulates what they'd get eating in the wild. MOST quality cat food are at about this level.

I don't want to jinx it but every cat I've owned has lived well beyond the typical age span of most cats. By eating good quality wet/dry food.

Some cats with allergies and or other health problems may need to have additional adjustments made to their diets. A vet can diagnose this and recommend whats best.

Same goes for dogs.

Just saw your comments on the Italian broker code words.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Interesting, coming from someone who has written on this site about Dyker Heights aesthetics, "guys with Camaros" and your former pizzeria-owning landlord (you know, THAT situation).

Let he who has not sinned throw the first stone.....

Posted by: benson at March 13, 2009 11:57 AM

My sister teaches at a school that Bon Jovi’s daughter attends.
A couple of months ago, my sister and I were in the Pool changing room at the school and overheard 2 other teachers discussing Parent/Teacher night. They were discussing how he that night wearing tight jeans and what his butt looked like and how cute he is.
Let’s just say, my sis and I got dressed very slowly.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 13, 2009 11:59 AM

Wasder - yes at one of the majors
ha - you guys are the nice ones - Im always worried we are the neurotic weirdos who take weeks to pay you guys and have a million edits!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 13, 2009 12:01 PM

gemini--if you have even been my client I hope you are again some time! Most of my label clients pay me fairly quickly, or at least consistently time frame wise. Within 60 days. As for notes, the only issue I sometimes have is when I have asked for all notes to be collated by one person and then I get ten separate sets of conflicting notes. And then just when we are onlining, the label president who never watched it during the editorial process comes in with some bizarre irrelevant note that makes us have to reschedule all our post. This only happens once in a while though. Chances are pretty good we have worked together I would say.

Posted by: wasder at March 13, 2009 12:08 PM

BTW--biff knows my not so secret identity if you want to reach me.

Posted by: wasder at March 13, 2009 12:09 PM

YEAH BENSON I KNOW THAT SITUATION!

You calling me racist? Well then buck up big boy cause it's !$%*#&^$_#* on now!

What that broker did was racist. There's no question about it.

So I don't enjoy the architectural/design aestetic found in a majority of Dyker Heights that makes me a racist?

Because I talked about guys in Camaros that's racist? Buddy I grew up riding in Camaros (hello, you remember the 80's right?) I wasn't aware that Italians had the lock on them.

Yeah, my landlord owned a "pizza place" and yeah, I'm familiar with THAT situation. let's call a spade a spade shall we? His business dealing insanely questionable. There's no doubt in my mind there was something other than cheese, dough and sauce he traded in. That's all I'll say about that.

He who has not sinned, shove it up your racist *ss Benson.

I'm married to an Italian. You dumb SH*T!

of course the label pres NEVER sees anything until we hand them the "Finished Copy" and that's when they say something about some bullet point that really doesn't make/break the EPK, but makes you life a living hell.
Also for the record-when you guys do upload clips onto an FTP, please remember us label folks usually don't have fancy schmancy Macs to work off of so it does take us 40 mins to upload something that's 286MB - hahahaha which usually results in us emailing you back saying "um, this link doesn't work"!!!!!!!!!!!! - hahahaha

Frankly - I am a nerd about paying vendors and really try to do it fairly quickly.

Alright THL and all;

You want to know why I've got my balls twisted on this one, allow me to tell you.

I highly recommend that you read the book "Liberal Racialism" by the author Jim Sleeper, in which he recounts how one of the favorite ploys that the liberal elites use is establish their moral superiority by tsk-tsking the "racism" of white ethnics, and Italians in particular. I can't possibly go through it on this thread, so I just recommend that you read this book. Our former senator, Patrick Moynihan, also called liberals out on this one with his classic book "The Jews, Italians, Irish, Blacks and Puerto Ricans of NYC" (I'm not sure I got that title right, but it goes something like that).

Posted by: benson at March 13, 2009 12:28 PM

But if that was a wink wink kind of thing I am sorry if you ever had trouble downloading. Why don't you guys all have macs at a record label.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 12:50 PM

I said i wasn't going to get involved in the arguments of others, but I think it behooves us as an online community to speak up when we feel someone is being unfairly accused of being a racist.

Having read probably thousands of THL's posts over the last year or so, I don't recall one instance where I thought she made a racist remark, not explicitly or implicitly. In fact, I believe THL called some of us out not that long ago for having a condescending/belittling attitude towards a certain group (which I just can't recall right now).

benson, I like reading most of your posts but this isn't the first time you've called people out whom I strongly feel didn't deserve it (I think you were the one who accused BRG of defamation of character in regards to a priest?).

You know what Benson. You're just as bad a PropJoe.

Anyone who knows me know I'm the furthest thing from racist you can get. I was in my mind stereotyping the 80's. I was thinking back to my years of watching every woman who got one gray hair die their hair blue black or platnium blonde. Or every macho guy drive a Camaro, or every woman who HAD to have big long fake nails.

You want to take certain things I've said and try to paint a a racist go ahead. My husband is the only one I need to answer to on this subject.

I think we all though better of you, at least I did. Now I know better. Go choke on a Canolli, pig!

I'm now so looking forward the big giant Italian anniversary dinner we're going to be having tonight. Thanks for putting such a great taste in mouth.

OK, back to your corners, THL and benson and take a deep breath. Meanwhile, Thursday night, I expect to hear the two of you in harmony on this (it's a bit dated but always apropos in Brooklyn) (I know I'm gonna get in serious trouble for this):

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks
And the black folks hate the white folks
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark [that's the dated part--ed.]
Are dancing cheek to cheek
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise
As long as you don't let 'em in your school

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks
And the rich folks hate the poor folks
All of my folks hate all of your folks
It's American as apple pie

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans
'Cause it's very chic
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand
You can tolerate him if you try

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics
And the Catholics hate the Protestants
And the Hindus hate the Moslems
And everybody hates the Jews

But during National Brotherhood Week
National Brotherhood Week
It's National Everyone-Smile-At-
One-Another-hood Week
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you
It's only for a week, so have no fear
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 1:13 PM

Biff;

Where exactly did I call THL a racist? As I explained above, in referencing the book by Jim Sleeper, what she did do was more along class lines.

I have seen you and many others immediately call PropJoe down when he makes a remark about Jewish folks and plays on certain stereotypes. Even his jokes about Hasidic women (which I won't repeat here) are heaped upon. Same thing recently happened to wine lover when he sent out ONE post regarding hispanics.

So tell me why I am not allowed to call someone out when they were clearly playing on a stereotype, a person I have noticed did the same thing in the past? For the sake of comity, I didn't say anything in the past - but I have my limits. For your information, she once described a fedders house as "Jersey Shore Guido".

You know what my problem is here? THL commited a "safe sin" here on Brownstoner, as that Dyker Heights thread shows. Again, I wonder why only one person called out PropJoe on that thread.

As far as that incident with BRG, I stand by what I did. Again, I spoke up because no one else commented on what is perceived to be a "safe sin" here on Brownstoner: Publcily accusing a particular reverend (not a priest, btw) of the crime of fraud, without offering a shred of evidence.

The conclusion I draw from all of this is that there are verboten errors on Brownstoner, and there are those that can be just shrugged off.

gemini....I think that's exactly what benson is saying. I think the original reference made here today was fine because it was quoting what was said by a RE agent and wasn't meant to be directed at anyone as THL's thoughts.

I've been guilty of exactly what benson is talking about. Like he says above "The conclusion I draw from all of this is that there are verboten errors on Brownstoner, and there are those that can be just shrugged off." There's some grain of truth in that. We have, in the past, freely discussed catholics & Protestants in jest but when it comes to Jews, people are less comfortable doing that (although I've donme it with many Jewish friends).

Either way, we all need to realize when someone is being truly racist and when they are not (but may still be offensive to someone else). This is the fine line of any discussion where race, religion or national origin comes into play.

newsflash: it's the planet Earth in a large Universe in a huuuuge galaxy. people are allowed to make fun of whomever they choose for whatever reasons they want. getting in a tizzy about won't do any good. i dont have a favorite or least fav. ethnic group, basically cuz i just dont care, but i do believe people have the right to if they choose for whatever reason they want. people are always trying to curtail peoples freedoms on this planet it's sickening! if you dont like what someone says, just skip it. jeez.

"We have, in the past, freely discussed catholics & Protestants in jest but when it comes to Jews, people are less comfortable doing that (although I've donme it with many Jewish friends)."

DIBS, I don't think there's anyone here who makes as many Catholic jokes as you! But we know you're doing it all in fun. Regarding comment on Catholics and Protestants vs those to do with Jews, I think the Jews have a right, based on their history to be just a bit more sensitive and defensive than many other religious/ethnic/cultural groups.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 1:45 PM

Bxgrl;

Sorry, but this is nonsense. I'm not going to watch someone play on sterotypes of Italians to establish their moral superiority. I've watched it in the past with folks trying to do it to show their aesthetic superiority, but I draw the line with moral superiority.

I see that you called out the What yesterday with his remarks about "Rabbi Madoff" of something like that. You knew exactly where he was going with that, and you rightfully called him on it. I'm doing the same exact thing here.

Don't think I take enjoyment in doing this, as I actually like THL. However, I have my limits too. When a person is wrong, they're wrong.

Gemini: I'm too upset to explain, but it's something like that. Read Sleeper's book, and it will better explain.

OK...so here's what I do all day. In between breakfast, lunch and a few posts here and there on brownstoner, I've been going through all the research on Apple and looking at all the financial statements and valuation parameters.. I think its a buy. Besides, the chart looks great...its about to break out.

Have any of you seen much about the recently introduced new products...the diffrent ipods, the netbook?? Do you think there's anything revolutionary there?? If there is it'll push that stock back to $120 in a flash.

That said, if Jobs' health deteriorates the stock will take a massive dirtnap.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 1:48 PM

Where exactly do you buy those blinders you're wearing?

You're right, The Jersey Shore is known for quilting bees and book clubs. Guidos is a term that may have initially meant Italians but has come to define any man fromt he NY/NJ area who ascribes to a certain "look" the use of excessive hair gel and tanning product, body building, etc. Why do I bother.

Go back to your insular "overly sensitive" bubble.

P.S. Black Sausage skeeves me- Code: British people skeeve me.
P.S.S. Guiness makes me gag- Code: Irish people make me gag.
P.S.S.S. Gelfilte fish tastes nasty - Code: I'm an anti-semite.
P.S.S.S.S. I'm allergic to chicken: Code: too many to mention!

I guess the Corcos had good reason to get rid of those words.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 1:56 PM

fair enough, but you started comparing tragedies. Protestants vs catholics (including burning at the stake, and slaughter, ethinc cleansing, forced removal) has been going on for centuries. I really don't think you can assert one group or the other.

I'm mindful that such thinking leads to a situation were (for example a nation) becomes exempt from anything perceived as negative commentary.

You want to be stuck in some hole in the ground in some god foresaken suburban cemetary with no good bar close by, gemini???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 2:59 PM

Gemini: exactly right

THL: you just won't give it up,will you?

First of all, please don't use the history of your people to excuse yourself for your personal actions. It's distasteful.

Secondly, you expect me to believe that, on the one hand, you could discern the use of the word "family" as code, and then on the other hand, that you weren't using it yourself when you used the word "guido". Please.

Tell me this: if you meant no disprespect to Italians, then why did you bring up the ethnicity of the broker in the first place? Why did you explicitly state that he was Italian? Your story could have easily have made the same impact if you talked about trying to rent an apartment in an ethnic neighborhood.

Finally, nice try there to turn it around and say that the problem is that I'm too attuned and sensitive to certain words I perceive to be code. Really? I challenge anyone here to the following experiment: use other ethnic code words on this thread and see what happens. If "Guido" wasn't meant to be slang for Italians, then I want to see THL or others use the equivalent in some of your posts. Every ethnic group has these words - I don't need to tell you what they are. Go ahead, THL, use them.

I tried to defuse this, but you don't know enough to stop. Why not just admit you made an error, and let it go at that?

DIBS, I just read the headlines not the story but the new iPods just sounded like little USB keys to me. Zzzzzzzzzzz. Everyone already has an iPod anyway. But the iPhone will rule and we'll all be doing everything on it in the future, including reading Brownstoner and the NYT, for better or worse. Or....maybe copies of it.

But why buy Apple stock now? Isn't it too expensive?

I have a friend always buys tech stocks in the winter sells in the fall (in volume) cuz he always makes a mint trading on the inevitable uptick of a few cents.

cobblehiller, I'm so sorry to hear that. Sounds like you loved them both very much. When dad passed away, I often had dreams that he came back and I had a chance to say lots of things I always wanted to say to him and tell him my oldest child is named in his honour. He would have been thrilled to know that. Then I would wake up and sadness replaces those feelings. I still have that dream occassionally. Did you dream of your parents a lot too after they passed away?

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 3:26 PM

ok - am really putting myself out there
I'm Irish married to a black man

I think THL felt it was OK to make fun of Italians becuase she's married to one. Everyone joined in because it's sort of accpeted to make fun of Italians in most places (on tv,amongst our friends, at a comedy show) same goes with Irish people.
The reason is we don't have advocacy groups who are very visible/Vocal standing up for us - that's why you will see commercials like Lucky Charms, and The Guiness commercials etc etc.
but if someone takes a swipe at another group- jews, blacks or spanish -they usually have a stronger more vocal group to step in and speak up. so maybe benson is saying why is it OK to make fun of Italians but not Jews or Blacks etc?

I hope I am making sense here

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 3:36 PM

gemini- I think that's probably what he meant- but while its a good thing when people can laugh at themselves, making fun of other groups usually is rather malicious. It's one thing when you're good friends with someone- MM has often called me a Zionist tool and I've called her a Third World mouthpiece because we kid around about it. MM is family. But we know where we are coming from. Too many times people like to toss out insulting comments and then hide behind that old, oh I'm just kidding. But THL doesn't have a malicious bone in her body. Nor, do I believe, does benson.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 13, 2009 3:37 PM

"biff- what is your problem? Why should I respect him"

bxgrl, you're completely misinterpreting my words. I'm saying that if you don't respect him (which is completely your prerogative and fine with me) than why do you care what he says? Personally, if someone I don't respect says something I don't like, I would ignore it and/or not tend to really care or get upset. You don't respect him and you think he plays mind games, so why are you even paying attention to him? Aren't you falling into the trap you're claiming he is setting?

ME LET IT GO!! THE AUDACITY OF YOU TO SAY SUCH THINGS AND THEN SAY "O.K. THAT'S ENOUGH, WE'RE DONE". NO ONE TELLS ME WHEN I'M DONE.

NO ONE.

EVER!

I DID NOT MAKE FUN OF ITALIANS.

In the post Benson sighted we were all making fun of the aesthetic of the house as being tacky, dated and VERY 1980's. Some people did mention Italians I DID NOT. Benson why haven't you called them out on it???? Dave said it was Growning Up Gotti why not call him out? you scared of Dave?

If I'm guilty of being against Italians for saying my landlords "pizza place" business is a shady operation then I'm only as racist as ANYONE of you are against the owner of the "candy store" is shady. Clearly the business is fine you're just bigotted against candy store owners.

Guidos- fine. I can totally see why you would think I had some code going there. Listen to me close Benson...Guidos has become a generic term. You no longer have the lock on that word. Nor did you ever have a lock on Camaros, Acrylic Nail or black hair dye. They belong to the entirety of Strong Island and New Jersey.

and so far as this little ditty goes...

"First of all, please don't use the history of your people to excuse yourself for your personal actions. It's distasteful."

...I only brought it up to show that I understand what true persecution is and because of that I am very sensitive to matters regarding true bigotry and racism not this little personal vendetta that you have been building up with me.

You're a pathetic little weak excuse of a man.

Your attempt to peg me down as a biggot/racist or whatever else you and your little book want to call it are very thinly veiled and not missed by those with half a brain. Anyone can take instances and soundbites and make them into something they're not.

Wait, if there is a flurry at 500 and 15 posters stating "Five Hundredth", how will we really know which is the true #500??

Who will volunteer to go through and count them all from post #1?

BTW, the Death Star's servers suck, so I'm ready to post "500" now!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 4:24 PM

Gee THL- I thought when you said the acrylic nail, camaro and blue black hair dye you meant us Jewish women. I'll have you know we only do frosted blonde with highlights now. :-)

you a sweetheart, THL- we all know that. And I understand exactly how you're feeling- I am a tad upset with someone at the moment too. We should go drinking!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 4:29 PM

Although even if DIBS was correct with his 494, you still would have won with your post two posts later:

"500
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:16 PM"

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 4:29 PM

Sorry to have left you out, Biff. You can have the "Best Supporting Poster" Oscar. No tiara, but you do get a trophy :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:30 PM

"so what prompted this?"

DH, if you and Mr. B can figure it out...you can make BIG money.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 4:31 PM

The funny thing is Bxgrl, that person that fits all the descriptions he's called me out on (except for questionable pizza shop owner) was me in the 80's. I had the big hair (dyed black don't know why it was redundant), long nails, boyfriend with the Camaro (and yes Dave and IROC), and was called guidette.

He thought it was cute to string all those things I've ever said together thereby making me look to be bigoted.

Yeah, one day we will definitely go out for a drink. It'll be invite only.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 4:33 PM

haha cobblehiller - regardless you guys rule. have a good weekend all! I'm sneaking my buzzed ass out of here!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 13, 2009 4:33 PM

So, 600? Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:33 PM

DIBS, are there any stores in your Bed-Stuy neighborhood that sell truffle flavored massage oil and dildos for your female friends?

[Did I cover it all?]

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 4:34 PM

I think the comments about who is the 500th poster, etc. shouldn't be included in the final number of comments - wayyy too self-referential and a classic example of a self-fulfilling prophecy! [cue housing bubble/stock market/other analogies here]

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at March 13, 2009 4:35 PM

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 4:38 PM

Repeat: Why did you call out the broker's ethnicity?

Don't want to let it go? Fine by me, THL. I'll take it up to 600.

I find folks who will never admit to a small error to be interesting. I didn't realize I was dealing with a person without sin.

I will make you a tiara, snappy. Hope you like tinfoil (I should even do that. You didn't thank me and I was good for at least 15-20 pots)

Take a look at this entire thread. It hits on a topic I think you'll find interesting. You're one of the only ones in the past who have sniffed out this issue.

Did anyone catch Jon Stewart wiping the floor with Jim Cramer last night?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 4:43 PM

I don't want a tinfoil tiara!!!
**throwing myself on the floor like a two year old**
TANTRUM TANTRUM TANTRUM!
GIMME GIMME GIMME!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:45 PM

Why? Because dems da facts Benson! He was not going to show that apartment to a black, or Hispanic or an Asian. I'm pretty damn positive. So I'm at fault for calling him out on it? According to you I shouldn't mention that he was Italian?

Like I said before you're the racist not me.

Here it is for those who didn't read the post:

I know from code.

I was looking to rent an apartment and the broker was going to show me one in a predominantly Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn and when the broker called to make an appointment with an owner for me to see his place he very much emphasized that, "You'll like her she comes from a NICE family. No...I know...Her family is VERY NICE...like yours."

The dude clearly assumed I was Italian and he was clearly letting the owner know this. It was as subtle as a cinder block fall on your foot. I said to him, "So, how do you know my family?" I wanted him to know that I understood exactly what he was doing and was not amused.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 4:45 PM

Rob, I'll be polishing my tiara if bxgirl ever hands it over. *hint, hint*

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:46 PM

I'm not without sin Benson.

I'm just not guilty of the one you've decided to assign me.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 4:46 PM

GIMME GIMME GIMME!"

Been there, done that...I hope you have better luck than I did!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 4:49 PM

Benson, aren't you dwelling a little over much on the "small errors" yourself now?

Rob, I hope I'm going on a massive clothes shopping spree Saturday. (WIth or without actually buying anything.) Though I should stay home and do massive chores.

I wish the weather would warm up. I've been wearing the same pair of pants and the same boots for five months now.

What are you doing Rob?

Posted by: mopar at March 13, 2009 4:49 PM

I doubt I'll be there on Thursday, Rob, but hold that tiara for me! Bxgirl is being tight-fisted with the one I'm supposed to get! Darn her!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:50 PM

ROB!!! YUCK! Do you really do that everyday??? (Don't feel obligated to answer that!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:51 PM

THL;

I've had enough of your silliness. If what I said was not true, you would not have reacted in the way that you did. Just as you know from code, so do I. There is no point in continuing this dialogue. Believe what you want, and I'll do likewise.

And, oh by the way: have a nice weekend, yet again.

Posted by: benson at March 13, 2009 4:51 PM

Oh, Biff, are you gonna start a frenzy for #600???

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 4:57 PM

Don't condesend me Benson! I'm not some silly broad you can talk down to. Got that toots? I reacted that because you try to call me out on some b*llsh*t I don't roll over and lie down. I'm not some little wallflower.

You don't like when women defend themselves? You used to pulling out big words and shutting them down? Not this chickie.

I learned something today. You're a biggot if you call out an Italian for his being blatantly racist.

Got it now. Lesson learned.

Well darlings, I gotta go get ready to meet my greasy Ginzo husband for dinner at some Dago joint.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 4:58 PM

Benson,

Most people understand that that last line was sarcasm. Clearly something beyond you so I though I might point it out.

You feel free though to pull it out it back out 9 months from now completely out of context and use it as further evidence.

My gift to you.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 13, 2009 5:01 PM

THL, I really hope you have a lovely dinner and weekend. Forget about all the crap here today. You're a much appreciated and beloved poster.

"The conclusion I draw from all of this is that there are verboten errors on Brownstoner, and there are those that can be just shrugged off."

And in addition, they circle the wagons round too!

I'll be there at Floyds!

I go away for a few and come up to mayhem.
I read all the posts and just when I thought I was done, I hit refresh and had more to read, hit refresh again and more to read.

"I go away for a few and come up to mayhem."

It would be "come back to mayhem" unless you were actually "going down" and then had to come back up!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 5:17 PM

"BRG, I never got my congratulatory smooch for hitting 500 :("

Snappy, show up next Thursday and you'll get that well deserved smooch!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 13, 2009 5:22 PM

Considering what has happened here, did any of the other threads get any hits today? I haven't migrated off this page!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:22 PM

So why did the OT spike like this today> anyone?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 5:23 PM

Zombie thread!

Aim for the head!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:23 PM

"Snappy, show up next Thursday and you'll get that well deserved smooch!"

That, along with the THL/benson undercard with boost attendance for sure.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 5:23 PM

"will boost", dammit!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 5:24 PM

She did, Biff. We'll have to throw the confetti on her on Monday.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:24 PM

SNAP, YOU AIN'T KIDDING.
have a good weekend everyone, i'm out.

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 13, 2009 5:24 PM

Girls smooching on the sofa, a good fight and bocce ball. Now *THAT'S* a party!!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:25 PM

Cobble, I think it spiked due to a Friday the 13th phenomenon! Instead of bad luck for all of us, Mr. B gets 600+ bad posts!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:26 PM

AHEM, I had 500. And 499. Go back and check.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 5:28 PM

OOOPPPSSSS.....that was 399 & 400.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 5:29 PM

Trying to take my 500, Dave??? I'm suing you, too!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:31 PM

Go, THL! I mean, way to go, not vamoose.

Posted by: mopar at March 13, 2009 5:33 PM

642 and climbing...Lord, I hope BH gets home soon...I cannot be on here for 700!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 5:34 PM

So, this is the part where the thread circles the drain, huh? I'm taking a walk at 6pm. I also hope to not be here for 700! (But the fact that I keep posting isn't helping me any!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:39 PM

I'll be leaving soon too. I bet people will be logging on this weekend and adding to the thread.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 5:42 PM

Wow - I leave for a few hours and all hell breaks loose.

Don't think that I missed the chicken-ist comments because I didn't and those that made them should consider their cards marked.

Now, did anyone catch Jon Stewart wiping the floor with Jim Cramer last night?

Posted by: the chicken at March 13, 2009 5:45 PM

biff, count us down to 700 and let's put this baby to bed! I'll even throw in the towel on the 700 prize!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:45 PM

the chicken, I tried to resurrect that at 4:43!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 13, 2009 5:46 PM

BH is home! Hoo-ray! See you crazy kids later!

Have a good one all!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 13, 2009 5:50 PM

BOOYAHHHHH

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 5:50 PM

"chicken-ist comments" HA!!!

Nite Cobblehiller!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:51 PM

I'm out folks! Gotta go for my mile constitutional :) Have a good weekend everyone and smooches!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 13, 2009 5:54 PM

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 13, 2009 6:00 PM

Just watched the Daily Show. Stewart was grandstanding. Cramer is honest about how the sausage is made.

During the dot-com boom, my editors forced me to use garbage quotes from analysts touting dogs to provide opinion that wasn't my own and the quotes made the stories inaccurate.

Posted by: mopar at March 13, 2009 6:25 PM

I don't usually watch Cramer or Stewart, but you rarely see a takedown like that. Cramer was defensive and basically cried like a little girl. I expected him to own who he is, an ex hedge fund trickster who runs a gong show, not cower. Stewart punked him and let him off the hook at the end.
