I think our next gathering after the Keep F*cking Around Party should be called the "Taste the Rainbow Party". We could aim for late June (between the 20th and 28th) and consider it another event during NYC Pride, along with the March, the Rally, Pridefest, etc. Perhaps we should build a Brownstoner float for the Pride Day Parade?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 9:26 AM

Oh, and from the float we can toss skittles out to the parade goers!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 9:26 AM

Hm, after reading some of the 'ruder' definitions for 'taste the rainbow' — I don't think we should name it that Biff.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 9:28 AM

Will you be dancing on the float in a thong???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 9, 2009 9:30 AM

cobblehiller, you might be right. I was kidding, although I did start liking the idea more and more as I thought about it. Let's just focus on the upcoming gathering. Speaking of which, I'm sure many people avoid this thread. How should I advertise the gathering without hijacking other threads? I was thinking of doing a Forum post every few days and maybe mentioning it in the Links and Closing Bell threads as well. Thoughts?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 9:32 AM

"Will you be dancing on the float in a thong???"

Are you asking me or cobblehiller? DIBS, what do you think about mentioning it here?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 9:33 AM

Ha! - me, thong, float.... that is a truly horrifying thought.

But I like the idea of making a 'Stoner float!

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 9:40 AM

If it's ok with Mr. B, the forum post idea worked well last time. No?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 9:45 AM

"But I like the idea of making a 'Stoner float!"

Yeah I love that idea but Cobblehiller and Biff eh, I don't think you should be on it. I will be testing out my new "Weapon System" on that Float. RPG's make a nice sound and seeing the Asshats running around would be a Holla!

" guess we cound set up a Bocce game on the float."

Yeah Dave! We can call it "Ghetto Rollerball" and I'll be "What E"..

The What (Biff talk to Dave please about our "Bocce Ball Dust-Up)

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: Return of The What at March 9, 2009 9:54 AM

Violence so early in the day? **Sigh** :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 9:56 AM

cobblehiller, I agree it worked well, but the Open Thread has replaced the Forum as a place people went for off-topic discussions. But I think I will post something there every few days up until next Thurs (if Mr. B permits it) and also mention it in the Links / Closing Bell each day.

What, the only balls being tossed around on floats that day will not the ones used for bocce. Anyway, we were talking here last week about favorite books. Mine is Catch-22. Seems you like Heart of Darkness (which is another statement on the insanity of war, although far less satirical than Catch-22). What's your favorite book?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 10:00 AM

How about favorite movie?

I'm sorry but I can't attend the June 'Taste the Rainbow Party'

">"RPG's make a nice sound"

RPGs? As in Role Playing Games? Like the one where you come on Brownstoner and act all tough, when you are really just a lame punk-a** b*tch?

Posted by: Oleg at March 9, 2009 10:02 AM

"Yeah Dave! We can call it "Ghetto Rollerball" and I'll be "What E".."

I loved the movie Rollerball with James Caan back in the day! I suppose if the movie was more prescient, the sport featured would have been ultimate fighting.

"What E" sounds like the sequel to "Wall E" :-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 10:03 AM

Loved Catch-22 as well Biff - didn't like Closing Time anywhere near as much.

Favourite books would be anything by Douglas Adams.

LOL @ BRG! I didn't get around to your cauliflower recipe this weekend - was laid out by a nasty migraine :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 10:04 AM

Favorite Movies:

1) Cinema Paradiso (Italian)
2) To Live (Chinese)
3) It's A Wonderful Life (American)

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 10:05 AM

the chicken, Joseph Heller never matched Catch-22, but Good as Gold has some very funny passages as well. Many people who like Heller also like Kurt Vonnegut. The two of them were actually friends, which I found interesting. I used to live relatively close to Vonnegut on the UES before he passed away. I never saw him on the street but did hear him speak a few times. Very interesting man.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 10:09 AM

1. Rear Window
2. Seven
3. On Golden Pond

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 9, 2009 10:13 AM

I never got round to checking out anything else by Heller but figured I'd give Closing Time a chance as it was billed as a sequel - time is rarely kind to writers.

Thanks for the tip - I'll give that one a go.

One of the generally underappreciated things about NY is the creative talent that migrates here.

I don't like to pick favorites....with anything.

Dave, I love Seven (one of my top picks).
I also love The Usual Suspects and anything by Hitchcock.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 10:19 AM

I used to see Spike Lee quite often, walking with his wife and kids, shoveling snow/cleaning up in front of his townhouse, etc. I love his work and he was always very nice during our brief exchanging of pleasantries, which made me like him even more. I think some people (not me) considered him a sell out by moving to a home on the UES and after selling his studio in Brooklyn.

"a girl after my own heart :)"

um, this girl is after something else also ;-)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 10:23 AM

Hitchcock is king. I miss the days of thriller movies that didn't rely on blood and gore to get *sses in the seats. (And also touches of romance that didn't rely on boobie shots and smooching that looks more like a tonsil inspection). Creativity amongst suspense movie writers/directors is sadly lost. I also love Double Indemnity and Witness for the Prosecution.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 10:41 AM

Hi folks;

I am happy to report that my wife's visit to the doctor went better than expected. While some slight deterioration in her hip joint was noted, it is still OK for now, and the surgeon recommended that she put off surgery for an indefinite period. In situations like this, time is on your side, as the technology continues to improve. My wife was so relieved, as she really didn't want to go through surgery right now.

I wouldn't say that I have a favorite movie, but my general point is that I like the older big-studio movies much better than the present day ones, for a number of reasons. The standards of taste were higher, the standards of artistry and story-telling were higher, and the old studio heads knew the value of a beautiful or handsome movie star. In this regards, one of the true treasures of NYC is the Film Forum, which is always showing revivials of these old movies. Just yesterday, my wife and I went to go see

"Leave Her to Heaven" with Gene Tierny (gorgeous!) and Cornel Wilde:

http://www.filmforum.org/films/leave.html

It was a fine day to be in NYC: first we had dinner at Monte's on McDougal St., and then went to see this film.

Finally, I recently saw "Singing in the Rain". As I watched the famous scene of Gene Kelly singing in the rain, I thought to myself "This is exactly what we need to do in these tough times, we need to all sing in the rain like this."

"Which is why $660k condos will not be back at $150k.

I will take that bet DIBS. I say that within 5 years, a condo that previous sold for $660k or above will sell for $150k.

How about a stake of 1 dollar, in homage to one of my favourite movies, Trading Places?

Breakfast Club
The Godfather
Sweet Charity (I'm a Fosse Fanatic)

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 10:46 AM

I love Charade! I go in for any old movies (especially black and white) that are thrillers without the blood and gore. My usual 'Rainy Day Saturday' is popping in those dvds and making popcorn on the stove and heating up apple cider. YUM!

I modeled a new years eve outfit after it one year replete with a black sequined dress, the makeup, ponytail and feathered headpiece but alas, no choreographed dance routines ever broke out. :(

Excellent list! I hereby award you the "Best Taste in Movies" award. If I had to name one movie that was my all-time favorite, I would be tempted to name "How Green Was My Valley".

Snappy,

I'm sorry, but I'm awarding you the "Worst taste in Movies" award just based on your naming American History X as a favorite. In my mind, this is the all-time worst movie ever made. As one reviewer put it well, seeing this movie is like going to one of those college lectures in which the professor has a strong political view, and his lesson consists of bending every fact to fit this worldview. Awful, just awful.

Other films I like:

"Aguirre the Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo"--classic Herzog.

Oh crap- and every movie on MM's list.
And yes, Empire of the Sun was just totally amazing. My favorite scene (which also had me weeping for days) was the one where they look up and see the light from the Atom Bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The Last Emperor was a great film too.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 9, 2009 11:48 AM

Shindler's List and The Color Purple are two excellent movies that I can't watch too often. Both are extremely painful, very powerful, and show the best and worst of humanity in unforgettable ways. Whenever I see either one, I can't sleep that night, some scenes just replay in my head over and over again. Spielberg took a lot of heat on both films for different reasons, but both are filmmaking at its powerful best.

Agreed on The Color Purple. I never bought the dvd because I just can't put myself through the days of crying that follow watching that movie. It's also the only movie I've ever seen that was as good as the book.

And Gemini - Office Space rules! Sometimes I just put in the dvd and watch the beginning where he's rapping in the car and then go straight to the scene where they trash the machine in the field.

I'm not sure I ever paid any serious attention to a home in a movie...gotta think about this one for a minute.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 11:58 AM

gotta love Heathers. Another fav is "The Tin Drum". Disturbing, but great story.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 11:59 AM

Heathers! and Monsoon Wedding - some of my faves too!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 9, 2009 12:01 PM

Whoops, should read Schindler's List, can't spell today.

Other faves, also not highbrow, but I love them:

The Matrix (first one)
Stand By Me
Scarlet Pimpernel w/ Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour
Finding Neverland
The Secret of Roan Inish
Ladyhawk (stupid score, and Matthew Broderick is annoying, but I love the story)

Ditto on Shawshank, Edward Scissorhands, Drumline, Whale Rider - all wonderful.

"Invisible Man
Ralph Ellison
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_Man"

Impressive, What! It's among the greatest naturalist novels ever by an American author. Required reading, but not for the faint of heart or the easily distracted.

Posted by: East New York at March 9, 2009 12:03 PM

Oh, and the kid in me loves all the Shrek movies and Horton Hears a Who! Anyone remember Bedknobs & Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury? That's my favorite childhood movie.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:04 PM

Oh yes- the Color Pruple. Some movies that are my faves I have only seen once because they are so painful and moving to watch.

Little Women (always loved the book too).
the Elephant Man.
Hook (and loved the sets in that)

Posted by: bxgrl at March 9, 2009 12:04 PM

How Green Was My Valley
The Bicycle Thief
Sidewalk Astronomer
Dersu Uzala
Cinema Paradiso

mine:

Sunday - a woman on a Queens street mistakes David suchet (the actor who played Poirot on PBS's Mystery!) for a famous director; he is living in a homeless shelter and pretends along.

The Day of the Jackal

The Great Escape

Posted by: infinitejester at March 9, 2009 12:04 PM

I should probably add in Slumdog Millionaire and a few more recent ones, such as The Counterfeiters and Tell No One.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 12:05 PM

And forgot, Gallipoli.

Partial list:

The Third Man
Casablanca
Open City
Grand Illusion
I Am a Fugitive From A Chain Gang

Posted by: East New York at March 9, 2009 12:06 PM

MM, you love the tear jerkers! Stand By Me had me bawling like a kid. Did you ever see "Without A Trace" that was set in Brooklyn Heights? That movie even made my dad cry a river!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:06 PM

Shrek movies- yes!
And Yes- I loved Bedknibs and Broomsticks. Loved the book too but hated what Disney did to Mary Poppins. Thise are my favorite childhood books.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 9, 2009 12:07 PM

OH BIFF!! I LOVE Run Lola Run and Momento!

One of the best romance movies ever is: Amélie (French)

It just makes me swoon! If you haven't seen it please please watch this movie. Audrey Tautou is brilliant. Here's the (English) trailer:

I have a sneaking suspicion that everyone on here will be updating their Netflix queue today!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:08 PM

ohmig-d- Without a trace. I was riveted by that movie (and yes again to all of MM's).

If you haven't read th original story for Stand By Me you should. I still think Stephen King is one of the best American authors ever. And Ray Bradbury.

Posted by: bxgrl at March 9, 2009 12:10 PM

What iconic movies do you NOT like but are "supposed" to?

For me:

Star Wars
ET
Casablanca

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 12:10 PM

THL, I am kicking myself!!! How did I possibly not have mentioned Amelie? It has to be in my top 10 of all-time. Audrey Tatou plays one of the most memorable and likable characters ever in that movie. Fantastic movie. Speaking of likable and off-beat female leads, how about Liza Manelli in The Sterile Cuckoo?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 12:14 PM

Amelie...great movie.
Probably one of hubby's favorite.
There was a period of about a month, everyday I would come home and hubby would be watching it...it would be playing EVERY F--KING DAY!!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 12:15 PM

Iconic movies I can't stand

Star Wars (all of em)
Wizard of Oz
Godfather III (One and Two were good)
Grapes of Wrath

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:15 PM

Gallipoli was the first movie that ever made me actually cry.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 9, 2009 12:17 PM

East New York - its funny you should say "not for the easily distracted". I wandered in and out of the initial chapter and nearly dropped the book until suddenly he gets into the story. At that point, I wouldn't let go. Then it was more satisfying to return to the preface.

Posted by: dittoburg at March 9, 2009 12:17 PM

"Grapes of Wrath"
Never saw it....but on my list of favorite books.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 12:18 PM

I have also refused to watch (because of the hype) Casablanca, Titanic, Miracle on 34th Street.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:18 PM

Don't get to the movies a lot these days. Actually got to movies most during a family member's illness and constant cross-country travel. I love many of the films on other's lists. Would also add these to mine:
Mean Streets
Battle of Algiers
Easy Rider
12 Angry Men
Battleship Potemkin
Casablanca
Nanook of the North
Dumbo
West Side Story
Woman in the Dunes
Grapes of Wrath
Hard Day’s Night
King of Hearts
Dog Day Afternoon
El Norte

Posted by: vinca at March 9, 2009 12:18 PM

Snappy;

OK, you've redeemed yourself with the list of iconic movies you can't stand. I agree with your choices, except for Wizard of Oz. :-)

I particularly think that "Grapes of Wrath" is overated as a movie, though I like the book. In general, I think that Henry Fonda is overated, though I did like him in "12 Angry Men", which is another great NYC movie.

Posted by: benson at March 9, 2009 12:19 PM

Wow, I haven't seen that in YEARS Biff! I'm going to have to re-watch.

Anyone remember:

"What iconic movies do you NOT like but are "supposed" to?"

Great question. There were many I hated over the years, but here are the ones I was supposed to like but just didn't. I better duck after saying these:

- Blue Velvet
- Braveheart
- Dances With Wolves
- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
- Dogville
- Lost in Translation
- Pulp Fiction
- Peggy Sue Got Married
- Independence Day
- Reservoir Dogs
- Scarface
- This is Spinal Tap

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 12:20 PM

Gallipoli is one of the greatest, most profound and saddest war/antiwar films ever made.

Posted by: vinca at March 9, 2009 12:20 PM

Thanks Benson :) I like 12 Angry Men.

Vinca - El Norte is sooo good but sooo disturbing...the rats in the tunnel part was too much for me.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:21 PM

Snappy, Casablanca is totally worth it...despite the hype.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 12:22 PM

Hey, I just thought of another great movie that nobody has brought up, and is one of my favorites: "The Caine Mutiny". I actually like Bogey in this movie alot more than "Casablanca". The final scene with Jose'Ferrer is one of the greats, IMHO.

Posted by: benson at March 9, 2009 12:22 PM

Favorite sets, hmmm. For very different reasons, here goes:

Real houses that I could see myself in:
Sense and Sensibility - sisters' cottage
Pride and Prejudice - both Colin Firth and Keira Knightly versions - the Bennett house
The Changeling - grand Victorian pile which burns down in the end, unfortunately.

Best fantasy homes:
Nanny McPhee - a color riot of Edwardian splendour! I'd move in tomorrow.
Caspar, the friendly ghost - an Art Nouveau masterpiece in a forgettable kid's movie
The Haunting - a fantastic Victorian Gothic Revival mansion from hell set. The only reason to watch the movie - for over the top decorating ideas.

All time best sets: the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit houses, the Elven and human cities, and especially the halls of Rohan, were intricate and as detailed as any real buildings ever made. Every time I watch any part of this trilogy, I'm blown away by the talent involved.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at March 9, 2009 12:22 PM

Dances With Wolves was HORRIBLE! I was done with it after the gratuitous shots of Kevin Costner's pasty white *ss!
I tried to watch Pulp Fiction. After about 25 minutes I took it out of my home theater system and returned it to BlockBuster.
My 'Gay Card' may be revoked for saying this, but I also did not like Brokeback Mountain.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:25 PM

Speaking of movies I was supposed to 'love' - I walked out of The Sheltering Sky. Bored me beyond tears. And then listened to the 'rave' reviews for weeks. I just didn't 'get it'.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 12:25 PM

Biff;

Also a very good list of over-rated movies. Working for a Japanese company, however, I do like "Lost in Translation, because it is kinda like "A typical day at the office" for me.

Posted by: benson at March 9, 2009 12:26 PM

Scarface was a travesty too. It was so ridiculous, I like to call it ridonculous!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 12:26 PM

Oh, and anything sci-fi/fantasy related along the lines of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and most Superhero movies is an immediate NO for me. I can't sit through that stuff.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 12:26 PM

I also hated Training Day. Denzel had other Oscar worthy performances and I found this movies flat out disgusting.

I just realized that another all-time-great didn't make it to anyone's list" "Citizen Kane". I'll take back my previous statement that the all-time-great movie is "How Green Was My Valley" and give it to "Citizen Kane", as most critics do. I can watch this movie 10 times, and never tire of it. I'll give "How Green Was My Valley" second place.

"I wandered in and out of the initial chapter and nearly dropped the book until suddenly he gets into the story."

Yes, exactly, ditto. In ways, it's a difficult book to read, particularly in the beginning as you mention. But if you can hang in there, it becomes quite exciting. The "Battle Royale" is a particularly evocative scene.

"Scarface was a travesty too."

You should check out the original starring Paul Muni. It's a landmark film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarface_(1932_movie)

Amelie - GREAT
Like Water for Chocolat - also a winner in my book!

Posted by: gemini10 at March 9, 2009 12:36 PM

I can't stand It's a Wonderful Life - Jimmy Stewart is so annoying. The best Christmas movie is Scrooge, the musical one from 1971, with Albert Finney:

"Are these shadows of things that Will be, or are they things that May be, only?"

Why do you say that Rob? Don't you like movies?

THL, actually, if that was Farrah Fawcett or Bo Derek (and the one picture covered two entire walls), that would be more like it.

Rob, these are not the movies you usually watch from your beanbag with a 40oz. huh?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 12:41 PM

Infintejester;

Actually, I think "It's a Wonderful Life" has alot of relevance to what's going on today. One of the underlying themes of the movie is the havoc that those in power - bankers - can wreak on a society if they do not check their ambition with considerations of their fellow neighbors and family.

Movies so bad that they're good:
Grease
Mommie Dearest

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 12:44 PM

I didn't get the wonderfulness of Pulp Fiction, either. Or Resevoir Dogs. Why certain segments of society revere Scarface also baffles me. I didn't like Training Day, either. Denzel should have won for X, a much better movie.

Biff, you're missing some good movies. While some sci-fi, comics and fantasy films are awful, there are those that tell a good story well, with great plots, acting and direction.

Let me add The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my list of faves. I really liked Hairspray, too. It was a lot of fun. In animated films, I love Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Miyasake's Spirited Away.

Iconic movies I can't stand

Montrose, seeing as you have a liking for the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, let me ask whether you have seen Shadowlands. It's the story of a period in CS Lewis's life where he falls in love. I cannot watch that movie without being moved to tears by one scene, I won't spoil it by telling though. My wife bawled for about 5 minutes.

Snappy;

Here's another good rule for some singers: "If you're talent is in singing, stick to your knitting". There is nothing worse than watching a singer take a stab at acting, and fall on their face. Prime example: Paul Simon in "Annie Hall". His delivery is so bad, it's painful to watch.

Biff;

Sorry for missing your "Citizen Kane" nomination above.

Posted by: benson at March 9, 2009 12:58 PM

Waking Ned Devine was an enjoyable, wonderful movie. Good choice.

Billy Elliot should also be added to my list of favorites.

Another singer who should never have come near a movie screen (again, my Gay Card is being revoked): Madonna. Of course I also think she should stop singing. (Ducking in preparation for the shoes I'm sure will now be hurled my way!)

The Immaculate Collection can be good for reminiscing with old college friends, but beyond that, I think she's garbage. I will admit that when I was younger I owned the 45 of "True Blue" - which I only bought because the actual record was blue! I was young and knew no better.

Going back to movies....

Biff,I just realized that your list of notable NYC movies didn't include another all-time great: "On the Waterfront", another of my all-time favorites. Although this movie was shot in Hoboken, it was intended to portray Red Hook, where I was born. Indeed, I like this movie on its own merits, and because it perfectly captures the world into which I was born, both the good and the ugly. Although it has become something of a schtick now, Marlon Brando's famous "I cudda been a contenda" speech perfectly captures the sentiments of many folks in my father's generation.

I like the "Too Shy" song - after a beer or two :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 1:56 PM

The Drew Barrymore movie is Duplex. The house was drool worthy! Trailer below:

Rosemary's Baby was shot in The Dakota. Other than that, I also don't remember movie homes.

I seem to remember at least two confusions of yours resulting in contusions. I proscribe ignorance of grammar, and prescribe learning grammar, to prevent your descent from decent.

Rob is kind of like the "Every Ready Bunny" of the Brownstoner. He keeps going and going...

Rob,

Seriously though, I think you should heed some of the criticism being thrown at you. Some self-reflection may be in order. You have publicly stated that you have never made any serious attempts to repay your student loans. This is not a victimless crime, as you may think. Anyone who willfully defaults on a loan like this is only making it harder for someone coming up, as interest rate costs rise accordingly. Likewise, grammar may not be your strong point (I sometimes fall down here too, geek that I am) but you should respect its importance, and always try to improve yourself.

Posted by: benson at March 9, 2009 3:46 PM

Ditto are you going on March 19th to the shindig? If I go will you teach me some grammar.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 3:47 PM

Uh-oh...I think I have been using proscribe incorrectly. Horrors!

Rob;

I didn't beat this info out of you - you were the one who brought it up on one of the threads. I won't bring it up again if it makes you sore, but remember Bill Parcell's words: "You are what your record says you are".

I'm not trying to beat up on you. I'm trying to make your realize that it may be time for a little self-reflection and adjustment. It's never too late to start to make the changes in your life. Good luck, and best wishes.

Posted by: dittoburg at March 9, 2009 4:13 PM

i never should have been allowed to even take as much out in student loans as they let me. every semester i'd wind up with a fat refund check of thousands of dollars. :-/ if i was smart i would have reduced the amount of loans i guess, but at the same all i saw was free monies and took out the max in student loans every semester. duh. i know. i most definitely wasn't the only one who was like that though. the regular government student loans they are super lenient on though. i've been able to forebear the loans since 2000. the stupid private perkins loan people however are a total thorn on my side. i honestly dont know what to tell them when they hound me other than to be all like im not moving back to harlem so i can pay you people!

Joke:

An elderly couple, Margaret and Bert, moved to Texas. Bert always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home. Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, 'Notice anything different about me?' Margaret looked him over. 'Nope.' Frustrated, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, 'Notice anything different NOW?' Margaret looked up and exclaimed, 'Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow!' Furious, Bert yelled, 'AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?' 'Nope', she replied. 'IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!' Without changing her expression, Margaret replied, 'Shoulda bought a hat, Bert. Shoulda bought a hat.'

We all make mistakes, Rob. The important thing is to learn from our mistakes and try to improve. In the end, that's what reveals the true content of your character. There's almost always time to try to make things right.

DIBS:
I walked by the house yesterday to get a look. It is beyond "in need of tlc" from what I could see. Many windows were broken but not boarded the porch roof looked about to collapse etc. I still think it could be an amazing house but who knows how much work it really needs. I emailed the broker asking a few basic questions and he wrote back saying I need to kindly leave my phone number if I want an answer. That really annoyed me. I really want to know about the construction loan parameters thing it mentions in the listing. Do you know anything about that?

Not to worry wasder, neither do I - although that's not unusual for me! How's it going in the other thread? [Sorry, I'm no help at all...]

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 9, 2009 6:06 PM

Dr. Phil is such an Upper-Class-Ricki-Lake-Wanna-Be. My favorite is when he sits in that chair, tries to suck in his dickie-doo, and preaches to people about weight loss!

(For those not in the know, a 'dickie-doo' is when your stomach sticks out further than your dickie do!)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:07 PM

> "Hmmm...can you think of a less glamorous name?"

I did once meet somebody named Shatwanda.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 9, 2009 6:08 PM

THL, half of MTV watchers would love to kick his rocks!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:08 PM

Seriously? Or is that just a Snarkism?

Poor baby.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:09 PM

SHATWANDA???? Ha!

When I taught highschool for a year I came across some real gems. Sadly, it would be inappropriate to mention them here. I did read somewhere though about the urban legend (supposedly true) of the Jello twins - Lemonjello and Oranjelllo.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:10 PM

Thank goodness my parents didn't go in for that crazy name mess. Although my middle name was almost LaDonna. Thank heavens my mom won the argument for something more normal!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:12 PM

Something tells me this crowd is not big on the "NFL Network." Just a hunch.

Posted by: East New York at March 9, 2009 6:13 PM

Actually, Lemongello is a proper last name. I remember a pitcher or two in the Major Leagues with that name.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:15 PM

Good hunch, ENY!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:15 PM

The golden rule is do NOT name your kid something that will get them an ass kickin' in the playground. I don't even care if it's a family name.

UNLESS- You are so loaded that everyone around them has stupid names as well, and even then.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:15 PM

"Thank goodness my parents didn't go in for that crazy name mess. Although my middle name was almost LaDonna. Thank heavens my mom won the argument for something more normal!"

SnappyName is more normal than LaDonna?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:16 PM

ENY, I am a huge football fan (which is why I've stayed out of the discussion more than usual in the last hour or two).

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:16 PM

I dated someone within the NFL but I dislike football so much I turned down an offer to go to The Superbowl with him (many moons ago).

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:17 PM

Biff is a real boy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:19 PM

"SnappyName is more normal than LaDonna?"

:) I guess that could be up for argument!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:20 PM

I'm a bad lesbo. I don't do sports outside of tennis.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:21 PM

I watch NASCAR. That's gotta count for something.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:23 PM

What's your team Biff?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:23 PM

Snappy, you're not even a fan of the WNBA?? Hmmm, better double check your orientation. Although if you were a fan of Martina Navratalova, you might be ok.

THL, I've always loved the Eagles, although I've only been to Philly twice. It comes from growing up loving the scrappy Philadelphia Flyers during the 70s. And the Buffalo Bills are my team in the AFC. So you can imagine how heartbreaking football has been for me over the last couple of decades!

I did greatly enjoy watching the Giants beat the Pats two years ago, however.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:26 PM

Snappy,

Have you checked out Harlem Heights? I think that may be next on my list when my others go on hiatus.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:27 PM

Nah, Biff, for me it's all about Serena. Serena in the black cat suit :) Sigh...I need a moment....

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:28 PM

THL, I've never seen Harlem Heights. Is that on MTV?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:29 PM

I'm so sorry Biff! You truly are a fan if you're willing to state that publicly! We never really watched it in my house. For us it was car racing, baseball, basketball and hockey for the most part. My dad watched football only during playoffs.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:30 PM

No, BET

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:31 PM

I like Serena too. Martina was my favourite. She is always so classy on and off the court. And she seems very fun and intelligent as well.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:31 PM

Snappy, you and my husband both! He's a big time booty watcher!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:31 PM

Snappy....booty....huh?

Seriously THL, what guy isn't into the booty?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 6:33 PM

ugh, sports!
Not a fan of anything, but will watch some on occasion, of course making fun of everything. I root for the team with the nicer outfits.

Nascar...THL? Really?
Hubby will occasionally watch a race and I'll sit there bored, waiting for a crash.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 9, 2009 6:34 PM

Serena booty is in a class of its own :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:35 PM

THL, exactly! I'm not so much into car racing or basketball, but LOVE football and hockey.

Where I was born, kids grow up watching hockey - forget about Baby Einstein. I didn't have Barney and Dora; I had Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Darryl Sittler, Guy Lafleur!

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:36 PM

Serena's booty has it's own zip code.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 9, 2009 6:37 PM

Cedric the Entertainer does a great bit about Serena. He says she's cheating on the court because her booty serves as her second racket with which to return the balls! Histerical!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 9, 2009 6:39 PM

Yes NASCAR. HUGE fan.

BRG, When I say booty, I mean big league booty. Jlo and up.

Speaking of, he's going to walk in the door any minute so I'm going to head out. Or, back 'that thang' out as it may be.

Have a good one guys!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 9, 2009 6:39 PM

LOL! Night!

Completely serious. Most unfortunate.

On that note, I leave you.

Joke time.

A Priest and a Rabbi are sitting on a bus and the priest says, "Tell me, rabbi, is it still a requirement of the Jewish faith that you do not eat pork?"

"That is true, yes," the rabbi replies.

"But I wonder," the priest goes on, "Did curiosity ever get the better of you? Were you ever so tempted by the smell of bacon that you tried it?"

"I must be honest, I did once taste it," the rabbi tells him.

"And how did you find it?" the priest adds.

"Well, if I'm being truthful, I admit I found it delicious," says the rabbi.

A short while later, the rabbi asks the priest something. "Tell me, Father, is it still a requirement of your religion that, as a priest, you do not have sex?"

"That is indeed the case," the priest replies.

"But did curiosity ever get the better of you?" asks the rabbi.

"Since you have been so honest with me, rabbi, and since we are both men of god I will confess that yes, I did once have sex with a woman," the priest tells him.

"Beats the hell out of a bacon sandwich, doesn't it?" says the rabbi.

"I did read somewhere though about the urban legend (supposedly true) of the Jello twins - Lemonjello and Oranjelllo."

When I was growing up we were told about Orangejuice and Lemonjuice ("juice" pronounced "joooiiice"). I swore they were real.

Films not to be missed:

-8 1/2 (not 9 1/2 weeks although Mickey and Kim do have a certain chemistry)

-The Magnificent Ambersons (Orson Wells' favorite, enough said)

-The Lady From Shanghai (Orson Wells and Rita Hayworth, enough said)

-Akira the Japanese Animation masterpiece

-anything by Akira Kurasawa (Ran or Dreams for instance)

-Wings of Desire (exponentially better than City of Angels which it inspired)

-Swept Away (the original for God's sakes, not the Madonna remake.

-Amarcord (Fellini as master story teller)

-Sunset Boulevard (classic film noir)

-Double Indemnity (Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwick and a whole lotta attitude -definitive film noir)

-Now Voyager (Betty Davis, and why she matters)

-The Killers (noir squared)

-Chinatown (70's noir with Jack Nicholson and one of the great beauties of all time; Faye Dunaway)

-The Godfather (I & II) you find new nuances with each viewing, unbelievable

-The Wages of Fear (Yves Montand before all that singing crap)

-Annie Hall (the best relationship film ever)

-Stardust Memories (Woody's homage to Fellini)

-Manhattan (Woody on the city)

-Dazed and Confused (for those 70's kids)

-Anything by Pedro Almodovar (sexy, edgy and Spanish, Penolope Cruz and Antonio Banderas got their starts in his films)

-Midnight Cowboy (Rated X and Best Picture Oscar)

-Apocalypse Now (Redux version, for full effect)

-A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, a film that couldn't be made today, disturbing and important)

-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Brilliant, second best relationship film ever, maybe first)

-The Warriors (...if you have to ask...)

-Diva (French, New Wave, Cool, oh la la...)

-Raging Bull (Best film of the 80's, Scorcese's Magnum Opus)

-2001 A Space Odyssey (it's about evolution and time and the great beyond)

-White Heat (James Cagney...on top of the world ma....)

-The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (America's foundation mythology filtered through an arid and singular sensibility resulting in an unmistakable aesthetic)

it's late, to be continued....

"THIS HOUSE IS A HANDYMAN SPECIAL AND NEEDS A LOT OF TLC AND IS BEING SOLD AS-IS, AND IS SUBJECT TO RENOVATION LOAN QUALIFYING PARAMETERS."

It just means don't ask them to drop the price! Ha.

Presumably they don't force you to take out a construction loan to buy the place. I would you would be free to use your own millions.

So maybe they are just warning you that if you do take out an FHA construction loan, you will have to follow the FHA's rules. Closing costs and the mortgage rate will also be higher.

Posted by: mopar at March 10, 2009 5:02 PM

Oh! Or more likely they mean the thing will have to appraise at cost plus renovations so don't try to take out too high a loan. But this seems like more of a warning for the sellers than the buyers.
