Yesterday we were talking about Yemen. It looks quite interesting:
http://tinyurl.com/by5u9a

I was trying to find real estate listing there, but didn't have much luck. Challenging others to see if they can tell us what one can get for a nice home in Yemen.

Biff,

Dunno if you are being serious. I assume you are an American with an American passport, you may have quite a difficult time landing a vacation home in Yemen, unless you are sponsored by a US multinational or government agency or the World Bank. Yemen while not Iraq or Libya , is ruled by Islamic law. If you are an outsider, life is not as simple as you might imagine.

You want to buy a place that looks like that, look to Morocco ( not too hard to find RE there ) or the Costa Brava of Spain or Greece. I've been to all 3, fun livin'.

goldie/Prodigal Son, sorry for the confusion. I have no plans on packing up and moving to a place I know virtually nothing about (much to the chagrin of certain posters here, I'm sure).

When I said, "I was trying to find real estate listing there", I meant just to get a sense of what the homes and apartments were like, costs, etc. Out of curiosity and nothing more.

I have dual citizenship/passports, American being one of them.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 4, 2009 9:39 AM

DIBS, I wasn't baiting (for a change), I just wanted to see a sample of homes there, much like we often do here for other cities in culturally diverse, far off lands (like Buffalo and Detroit).

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 4, 2009 9:40 AM

DIBS,

I figured but y'know if there wasn't all this political BS going on, the Middle East is -prime- summer home target. At least for me.

Like I said for the same effect ( and a lot of money) I'd land a spot on the Costa Brava. Its the Middle East of Europe!

Posted by: Prodigal_Son at March 4, 2009 9:41 AM

I think there's some incredible hi-rise mud-brick buildings in Sanaa. Let me do some research.

Posted by: dittoburg at March 4, 2009 9:42 AM

Snappy, good try, but that listing is referred to as a "test property", whatever that means. I wanted to see an actual listing.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 4, 2009 9:43 AM

Actually it was an incredible leap for me to move from the UES to Bed Stuy, a far off, culturally diverse land.

awww :)

do you remember the blackout of 2003? (or was it 2004?) anyway in my delapidated tenement on the LES with no lighting (i was on the airshaft and the front room was being used as storage from the woman i rented the apt to and i had no access...) he led me up and down the stairs in the complete darkness for two nights. (no candles cuz the bodegas wouldnt sell candles to white people. im serious! but i find it funny and actually joked with the a-holes in the bodega about it after the blackout hahahah). dogs are dogs and pitbulls are very loyal. i will say one thing tho my dog did recently flip out on some random dude in my building and that was scary. the guy was laughing and it made no sense. im wondering if maybe he had interaction with my dog when the dog walker or my roommate was walking him. lots of dogs can be vicious. pitbulls are just trained to fight and the preferred breed for dog fights which is why they get a bad rep. if i had to do it over i dont think id opt to have a dog in the city anyway. but i have my dog and we are stuck together so what can one do but just live day to day and hope nothing bad happens.

I have always been censured rather than pitied, and that's how I like it! It is tricky to go to Yemen as an American.
As in most Islamic Republics, if your passport has a stamp in it from Israel, you will probably not be let in. That is why the Israeli govt used to give one the option of stamping a "slip in page" so as not to cabash your travel plans elsewhere in the region. You really need to go either as guests of one of the country's institutions or a government group, or like me, on a cultural tour set up by a well-known museum.

Posted by: sam at March 4, 2009 10:49 AM

But I guess you know more than Leuthold.....

March 4 (Bloomberg) -- Steve Leuthold, whose Grizzly Short Fund returned 74 percent last year betting against U.S. stocks, said now is the time to buy equities because investors are too fearful about the economy.

“These comparisons people make with the Great Depression are totally out of touch with reality, and pretty stupid,” he told Bloomberg Television in an interview today. “We’ve been in much worse, much more panicked and more scary situations in the U.S.”

The economy isn’t as bad as it was in 1974, when stocks began rebounding, said Minneapolis-based Leuthold. He predicted the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index will surge to at least 1,000 in 2009, representing a gain of 44 percent from yesterday’s 12-year low of 696.33

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 4, 2009 11:19 AM

a message for Randolph:

Oddly enough you are just as guilty as those you criticize for having nothing to say.

Brownstoner, by creating an open thread has actually capitalized on the idea that people will come to the site with nothing to say. Every time someone posts in open thread there is a chance that a subject will arise that people want to comment on which means that open threads often become the largest thread of the day. And every time you come to open thread you see the banner ads, like every other page, over and over and over again.

What's even more ironic is that when YOU challenged the regulars on here YOU created a discussion that indeed wastes more people's time. How many posts have been about "Randolph" since you posted your complaint. See how it works?

As Mr Butler gets more hits and his ads get more views, he is the winner here because of suckers like you.

And indeed, me.

The S&P and Dow are sitting at critical support levels going back to 1996. I expect the market to retrace and move high for the next few weeks but if I wrong, the next level of support is going back to 1974. God help us all if that happens..

Randolph the trolling poster
Had a very tiny brain
And if I had to venture
I would guess that she's insane.

All of the other posters
Dogpiled on and called "her" names.
They drew a bead on "randolph"
Shot "her" down in verbal flames.

Then one frosty Wednesday morn,
Snarky came to say:
Randolph with your wit so dim
Time for you to slink or swim.

Then all the posters moved on,
Randolph's time had come and gone.
Randolph the trolling poster,
You’ll go down as quite the "PWN."

My last (don't hold me to it) post on the matter of bitter randolph:

"Ennui only rouses himself from his torpor to cajole other Warriors to be more interesting - without, of course, ever contributing anything of interest himself. Ennui has limited weaponry at his disposal, but his majestic affectation of boredom provides an effective defense to attacks. When pressed in battle he will announce his intention of moving on to a more stimulating forum, but instead he will generally lurk quietly until the threat passes."

Fairly accurate, except for the "lurking quietly" part.

Sam;

There is hope out there. The next "big thing" out there is "supercomputing",though this is not on a consumer level. I am actually working with several companies on this technology. Companies like IBM and Sun have found a way to "cluster" ordinary servers together, using fiber optics, so as to make a fairly cheap supercomputer. In the old days, supercomputers were massive machines that had a price tag which was the same as the GDP of some lesser nations. Now, many companies will be able to afford supercomputers.

The significance of this development is that it will save the companies big buckeroos, or give them capabilities they never had before. For instance, the auto companies plan to use supercomputers to completely simulate new models, rather than build expensive prototypes. The oil companies are using supercomputers to perform complex geological similations, so that they can predict where hidden deposits of oil lie. Finally, alot of climate researchers are using supercomputing to predict the changes - if any - in the earth's atmosphere (Al Gore's, and your, favorite project!).

Keep the chin up! Life moves ahead.

Posted by: benson at March 4, 2009 12:32 PM

Apologies, my dear ennuiater.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 4, 2009 12:38 PM

that sounds fascinating, benson. You are going to have to tell me more at the get together. Is this similar to the SETHI (Was that the nae?) where they were listening to signals from deep space by drawing on huge numbers of voluntarily participating computers? I don't remember much of the details but I seem to remember they called it supercomputing. And where can I get one? :-)

Posted by: bxgrl at March 4, 2009 12:40 PM

Thanks benson,
though that chin up reference has loaded connotations in these parts.
I am personally over the whole computer business. I want something that makes real life easier. Like the robots on the Jetsons or a fake mimi-me I can send to boring evening meetings and receptions in my place. Four or five standard pre-recorded messages could get him/it through the night.
Also, somebody has to do something about how we get around the city, I mean the subways were a brilliant idea in 1901, but honestly, can't we find alternate ways of getting from Park Slope to Zabars? Where are the REAL inventions??

Posted by: sam at March 4, 2009 12:43 PM

> "can't we find alternate ways of getting from Park Slope to Zabars?"

Agreed. Where's my jetpack and finned helmet that all of those 1930's science magazines kept promising?

Posted by: sam at March 4, 2009 12:53 PM

Hey, rob... I know you probably don't want to hear from me again! But as a fellow pit owner, I felt like I had to pipe up about your story. I believe is our resonsibility as owners of a much-maligned breed to do more than just "hope nothing bad happens". We need to work hard to make sure we don't allow anything to occur which might add to the stories and distortions about pit bulls. Is your dog fixed? Have you have ever worked with a trainer? Maybe this guy just smelled off or whatever... but you should know there are lots of great pit-friendly trainers out there who will give discounts if you do feel like some bad behavior patterns are growing. My pit recently got attacked by some guard dogs and started to get defensive and weird around dogs so we are working on that with a really great trainer. Of course any dog will act up and misbehave, but because we are trying to change people's minds about pit bulls and show them what loyal, loving animals they are, I feel like we owe it to the dogs to go the extra mile.

Posted by: mshook at March 4, 2009 12:53 PM

DIBS;

Not only do I remember Cray, they are a customer. In fact, Cray is one of my favorite customers because of their location: Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the home of Leinenkugel beer. Wisconsin has some "interesting" food, shall we say, like fried pickles and fried cheese curds. Yuck! Leinenkugel's is great beer however. A hotel room in Chippewa Falls cost $59/night, complete with breakfast.

One correction, however: Cray dominates the "big iron" supercomputing machines, the ones that cost a mini-GDP. This is now a small slice of the market. The big money is now in computer clusters, as I described above, and it is dominated by IBM, HP and Sun.

Bxgrl;

The machine you are thinking about was called "Ivan" and it was built by IBM. It is also one of those "big iron" machines, not the new "clustered computers".

Sam;

Sorry, my company doesn't develop "Curmudgeon Personal Assistant Devices".

VisiCalc, yeah, my dad waxes lyrical about it.

Benson, for the most part, we don't need more processing power. We have enough. I would follow that up by saying it's the software that needs work but actually...it's fine. Thanks to the Internet, everything is working fine and we hardly need to buy any installable software anymore. High tech is just becoming invisible, part of the air we breathe. Which means there's not as much money in it any more.

Which is not to dissuade you from fiber optics or anything. But I mean the big picture.

When my sister was about five she once pressed a big, red, shiny, pretty button when she was visiting HP. Shut down their mainframe. Oops!

ditto...Randolph is a 31 year old female, and; from what we've seen so far, a pretty skanky dumb-ass piece of work. I really wonder whether she has the intellectual prowess to ever add anything real to a thread.

My psychological profile is that she went to community college and majored in legal studies. She works as a secretary in a law office and currently has a lot of down time because they specialize in real estate closings. She recently came across a reference to brownstoner in the Women Seeking Men Craigslist ads. She is lonely, rarely goes out except to the corner grocery. She's vegan but cheats when she's depressed. She wants companionship but has yet to find a cat that likes her.

Yes, Dave - I subsequently found that the dog situation was mentioned earlier in this very post by goldie. I didn't realize it was the same story! No surprrise the dog figuired out what was ging on. Pit bulls are generally intelligent and (yes) sensitive dogs. They were originally bred to fight, but are remarkably gentle, particularly with people, if they are socialized and kept by well-meaning owners (like Rob).

"I loved how the Con Ed people immediately said that this had nothing to do with their guys working on that street."

Quite predictable. It must be wonderful to be a monopoly. Accountability is just a word!

Randi, what's your story? Do you walk into every party and call everyone there an ass? And then help yourself to a beer and sit down and stare at them, expecting someone to chat you up?

OY.

Posted by: boofer at March 4, 2009 3:01 PM

randolph...how close was my psychological profile? Too close to comment?? Here. I'll post it again. But i'm adding a few things since we learned more about you...

What we've also learned....

Being a bastard, unwanted child she was tossed in the gutter to be raised as a troll under the BQE. Never having been formally schooled in English, she has rarely ever completed a sentence, let alone one that is relevant to the conversation. That, of course, did not keep one from getting into a community college.

There is evidence that she is actually the Stoop Pooper.

Yes, I’m Baaaaaaaaaack!

Thanks to all for your kind words last Friday. While I was very abashed by my vulgar post, thanks to those that tried to make light of it. By days end, I enjoyed reading all your funny comments and was feeling much better about the whole thing.

I do however have issue with some of your comments:
Ditto: It’s really not the spelling of the word that matters but the size of the definition. And no I’m not pulling your leg. But can I?
Benson: Please put your steamed and cleaned Borsalino on your head, I’m sure to be impressed.
THL: If you show up on March 19th, on one of my many name tags will be *Gulp* and stuck on my chin.
Bxgrl: I think you meant to say “You're trash and funny and quick”
*Rob*: Not sure about all girls from Bay Ridge doing that, I’m just sure about one.
Snappy: I hope our ‘blog luv’ will never disappear.
Cobble: Miss BRG is over it.
DIBS: You do???? Really?? And thanks for not taking a cheap shot at me.
Biff: Thank you for your kind words and not posting a corny joke; that surely would have put a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

And in light of some censorship/posting issues going on by Mr. B and yours truly, I’m swallowing my pride and posting.

Corel is still alive and well, altho not what they used to be, and still makes the best illustration software for the PC, which I have been using since R2 (now in R12). They also own WordPerfect which some people, including myself, think is a better program than MS Word. In fact, other than Excel, MS generally sucks!

No longer married, sam. But keep me in mind if yours doesn't work out- Let your wife know you have someone waiting in the wings if she gives you a hard time :-).

Wordperfect also allows you to create a PDF- Word used to do that, years ago, if I remember correctly but no longer. It is a great program. MS Office 7 is awful. I'm so addicted to Coreldraw I would probably have to go to rehab if they ever took it off the market. It can be a little buggy but X3 is much less so. I agree with denton and mopar- software rules.

You’re never going to let me live this ‘Return of bayridgegirl’ log-in name, you’re holding another of my posts under that name for review.....I give up!!

Note: to people that create multi user names. Don't create one with: Return of________

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 4:08 PM

I tried to post this under ‘Return of bayridgegirl’ but it’s being held for review, so I’ll post it under my only other log in name ;-)

Cobble:
When a new log-in name posts for the first time, their post is held for review/malicious content.

I tried to post a comment at about 10:00am (using my Return of bayridgegirl log-in name)
It was obviously a parody on ‘The What’ and also referencing Arabs in the theme of what was going on in the thread.

I emailed Mr. B, alerting him that I was a regular poster and asked him to release the post. He replies that he thinks it’s racist. I told him I’d take full responsibility for my words and it’s a parody and no worse than what anyone else has said here. Regardless, about 2 dozen emails later between Mr. B and myself, to appease, I re-wrote it; removing what Mr. B deemed ‘racist’ and tried to post again, but yet there were some issues with my use of the ‘F’ word.
Well that was cleaned up and finally posted.....after about 3-1/2 hours.
Problems with the system – Yes.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 4:10 PM

There's a thread on a browstone blog
And it serves three hundred ads a day
Many posters pass the time away
And talk about their homes

And there's a “girl” in this open thread
And she sounds quite sick in the head
They ask "Randi, are you gone yet?"
She serves them lame taunts and whines

The posters say "Randi, you're a fine troll" (you're a fine troll)
"What a good PWN you would be" (such a fine troll)

. . .

(dooda-dit-dooda), (dit-dooda-dit-dooda-dit)

Posted by: SnarkSlope at March 4, 2009 4:11 PM

sam...my parents still live in Albany...not any kind of historic house though.

Yes, Troy especially has had quite the revival having been a laughingstock and essentially the armpit of upstate NY for most of the 60s, 70s & 80s.

One of the issues on the values, at least in Albany, is that property taxes are astronomical compared to the values. Don't know much about the path of gentrification that Troy took but it must have had something with good management.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 4, 2009 4:12 PM

biff- of course you can take credit for being Montrose Morris (I would make sure the life insurance is paid up first).

Posted by: bxgrl at March 4, 2009 4:51 PM

Hey BRG, we get that you're upset but you think you can take it down a notch? You're starting to WHAT out on us.

Just think, you may be upset with Mr. B today but just think of the gazillions of hours of entertainment he's provided.

You can't fault the guy for trying to reign in control of his sight every once in a while.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 4, 2009 4:54 PM

"BRG is flipping out...again"
When did I ever flip out???

THL: And I'm not upset. I will stop.

Change the subject:
A friend of mine has a sports car and this weekend he took me to a desolate area and let me drive it...at 130 mph, exhilarating!!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 5:07 PM

SAM - a croissant with raspberry jam is sublime - but only if the jam is Bonne Maman :)

ok - wow - I missed a whole day of funness on this thread!
hahaha
Who's Randolph?

Posted by: gemini10 at March 4, 2009 5:09 PM

"When did I ever flip out???"

BRG, don't read too much into that...I was teasing you! : )

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 4, 2009 5:10 PM

You guys are still at it, huh?

"No other aliases."

Yeah, me neither.

Posted by: East New York at March 4, 2009 5:11 PM

Sam!!! I so totally hear you on that! I had that *moment* yesterday.

My mom and dad stopped by and mom gave me a huge loaf of potato bread that she'd just baked earlier that day. I cut off a big thick piece (still a little warm) buttered it and put on some apricot jam.

I almost cried. I was THAT happy.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at March 4, 2009 5:11 PM

"We'll save a nametag for you. See what happens when you survive a day of hazing?"

And what do people who survive every day of hazing get?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 5:11 PM

I realize I'm a bit late on this, but I don't have regular internet access at work. I spent three weeks in Yemen in the summer of 2007 (yes, in those mud brick houses in Sanaa) studying Arabic. I'm a white American with midwestern ancestry, and no, I didn't ever feel unsafe. Yemenis are quite friendly and while the country is ruled by Islamic law, that hardly means you shouldn't go there. In fact if getting high is your thing, you can chew qat all day long (and go up to the mountains and rent AK47s for the day - quite the combination!).

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at March 4, 2009 5:11 PM

cobble, I know. I can read a jab and a joke.
Geez, I'm not that sensitive.
:-)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 5:12 PM

Sam, your passport info is only partially correct. Only Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Algeria, and Yemen (among Arab countries - among non-Arab countries, only Iran) ban travelers with Israeli stamps. None of them, except Iran, really qualify as "Islamic Republics". In Yemen you just arrive and they give you a visa and stamp your passport, no questions asked. The same in most other countries in the region: Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey. Only Syria and Algeria require you to get a visa in advance, but you can travel on your own. Iran, Libya, and Saudi Arabia require you to travel with licensed tour groups. This is not difficult if you can find a tour group going. From experience, I'll note that Iran is very easy and affordable. I wish more Americans traveled to the region, it would contribute a lot to mutual understanding, cultural exchange, etc. etc. etc., and it's far easier than most people think!

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at March 4, 2009 5:19 PM

we went to Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the Emirates and Kuwait.
Yemen was the most other-worldly, in fact it reminded me of the scenes in "Return of the Jedi" where they are in a small town. I'm sure they used yemen as inspiration. Kuwait is like Las Vegas with veils.
I agree that more Americans should travel to the Middle East and see the Arab world beyond Turkey.

Posted by: sam at March 4, 2009 5:25 PM

I should also note that an American can get two American passports, both valid at the same time. One is valid for ten years and one for two years - you just have to apply and write a letter stating you need to travel to Israel (or, say, Syria) and your other passport has stamps from forbidden country X, etc. I have two passports for this precise reason.

Sam, I used to live in the UAE - glad you got to see some of the Peninsula, especially Yemen, which I agree is another world entirely! But it's a great one (especially with good qat).

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at March 4, 2009 5:31 PM

I just knew I didn't want them to stamp ANY passport in Cuba, I bought a shitload of cigars let me tell you.

Posted by: sam at March 4, 2009 5:36 PM

sam, I did the same thing when I went there. Mostly Montecristo #4s...not the best but better than anything here. What did you pick up, Cohibas?

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 4, 2009 5:43 PM

Please post more positive things about the Middle East.
Especially about the gorgeous women.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 5:45 PM

Start us off tomorrow BRG - post something you think most people may not know that they might enjoy about Yemen or the Middle East.

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 4, 2009 6:10 PM

I used to live in Hong Kong and we'd get good Cuban cigars there. You could also have them mailed back here to the US as well.

I know a Yemeni guy who is gorgeous. He's the one I mentioned earlier that everyone thinks is Puerto Rican. I don't know how to say "muy caliente" in Arabic.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 4, 2009 6:12 PM

"I don't know how to say "muy caliente" in Arabic."

Muy caliente in Arabic is: bayridgegirl

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 4, 2009 6:38 PM

Dave, I bought many brands besides cohibas.
I got some Partagas, Hoyo de Monterey, Romeo y Julieta, Diplomaticos, Ramon Allones (excellent!) on and on. I also bought too few bottles of excellent aged rum, it is like single malt Scotch, same color, same smoothness.
I liked Cuba maybe a little more than Yemen. I'm sure we will all have an opportunity to visit soon once Obama lifts the archaic trade embargo, but there is something special about forbiden fruit, no es verdad?

Turks are not Arabs,sam

Posted by: buckfast at March 4, 2009 7:35 PM

buckfast,
yes of course, thank you.
I meant the Muslim world beyond Turkey.
My first wife was born in Istanbul, though she is Christian.
