DNBYOB (Do Not Bring Your Own Booze)
The State Liquor Authority will be coming down to Brooklyn next week to try to rein in a wide-spread problem that's particularly out of control in our fair borough—unauthorized BYOB policies at restaurants (particularly ones that have just opened and are waiting for their liquor licenses). “We would look negatively at that,” said the SLA Commissioner. While complaints will come in through the SLA, it's the local police precincts that end up having to do the enforcement.

I think it's time we all went back to carrying flasks around with us!

Gimme a break. Not enough going on with the SLA with illegal strip clubs, party halls and private clubs that have HUGE issues within different communities in Brooklyn. I'll reference the recent outcry about the Play Pen in Sunset Park as an example.
They need to look at their priorities and get them straight...
Who's doing the complaining about start up 'raunts w/ BYOB policies? Especially in this economy!

Although I enjoy a BYOB policy - in these economic times I can see it from the other side - no not SLA side - but that of the restaurant who is spending a fortune on rent, which was set in a lease written when the market was far better and based on liquour sales and then spent a small fortune to properly get a license approved and then have to compete against a new restaurant that is probably paying far lower rent AND is getting more business because the cash strapped customer is favoring the BYOB establishment to save money as well.

One of the few good things I remember about Ed Koch as Mayor was his encouraging BYOB policies, despite their technical illegality.

I love BYOB system, sad they are are bothering with this. Irony is law reads, i am told, that restaurants With License can allow byob and those Without, Cannot... actually. Tradition is reverse of course.

FSRG,
Nothing fair about business. Considering the typical 100%+ markup on liquor, many of those places could slash drink prices and still turn a decent profit--and make customers happy. After all, I'd rather NOT walk up and down Smith Street carrying the fifth of Jack Daniels and two bottle of wine necessary for any good meal!

Illegal clubs, etc: expensive to bust and to prosecute.
BYOB and people drinking on stoops: easy to bust and cash cow in fines.

I know of very few BYOB places and I'm always looking for them. Where are all these places you speak of? Can we make a list?
