Coney Island Boardwalk: What Lies Beneath

Urban adventurer/photographer Nathan Kensinger, in a post dedicated to the late Bob Guskind of Gowanus Lounge, reveals the strange, and strangely beautiful, world that exists underneath the Coney Island boardwalk, from a small tent city to old building entrances. There are a bunch of photos to see, so check out the link.

This just makes me so sad for the Coney that's to come.

This is a photo essay I wish I had done. Of all the hours I spent prowling around Coney in 1992 I can't believe I didn't go under the Boardwalk.

The boardwalk used to be elevated above the beach rather than the subterranean space it nows seems to be. Several years ago they trucked in tons of sand and raised the level of the beach, but as a kid I would walk onto the beach from Surf Avenue by passing underneath the boardwalk rather than over it as you now have to do.

I spent a lot of time under that boardwalk, in high school in the 80's, before they trucked in the sand. From what I remember, it was probably a good idea to make it inaccessible....

Great set for the opening scene of a teen slasher flick.
Coney Island Chainsaw Massacre, anyone?

Wow....I forgot all about that until you mentioned it!
"From what I remember, it was probably a good idea to make it inaccessible...."
Yeah, that's right also. No one was calling it "cool" then.

Pete...I can imagine that the C.I. whitefish are the same ones as also found under the deck of the Boatslip in Provincetown, MA!!!! What an incredible cruising area!!!!

Unfortunately, the area under the boardwalk was the setting for too many real life sexual assaults, etc. That's why they packed in all that sand and sealed most of it off with chain link fences.

Coney Island is great if you need heroin or hookers.

did a photoshoot under the boardwalk back in '97. we found a hole in the chain link fence and snuck in. spent over half a day and no one bothered us even though it was a busy day at the beach. the filtered light is beautiful.
