Closing Bell: Brooklyn in the 1970's

boro-park-flickr-.jpg
Brooklyn Based's Twitter alerted us to an amazing picture set on Flickr—Brooklyn in the 1970's. The photos, uploaded by Whiskeygonebad, show the people, places, and the fashion of Brooklyn in that era.

Great shots, but isn't that 34th Street in Manhattan?

Ah, you are right. Will update it.

Nice choice!

This is the world from whence I came!!! My wife is probably in that shot of FDR High School's lunch room - she graduated in 1975, as a matter of fact.

Amazing, historic daguerreotypes from a distant, bygone era.
Forgive me for not sharing in the nostalgia for the seventies.
Brooklyn was situated at a rather low point in the nation's anatomy back then.

everything's better in b&w

funny that those who will love these pics the most either 1) never lived in that era and/or b) wouldn't have been caught dead in these types of neighborhoods

They look exactly like the kids in my high school - same time frame. The platform shoes, the bell bottom jeans. Just missing candies and jordache - maybe that was a little later? I remember those bomber jackets the guys wore.

What were those shoes called - marshmellows? They had white soft platforms with colored uppers?

Posted by: cobblehiller at March 16, 2009 5:25 PM

Wow - I graduated from FDR in 1979, wondering if any of the people in those pictures chased me home from school. I was a black girl that was bused in for a better education opportunity........

Hey, Chaap a Nosh! There's one (or was one) on Avenue M.

Disco is dead! Rock rules! You're right, Blackstoner, although I lived in that era, I wouldn't have been caught dead hanging out with the Saturday Night Fever crowd. And I was from Midwood, which isn't exactly the coolest neighborhood.

I'll admit, I did own a pair of Jordache.

Posted by: rh at March 16, 2009 5:56 PM

Oh geez, you had to bring those up!

Yes, What, I do remember them...earth shoes! I had a pair in tan/brown! UGH! LOL!

On the site of that 1855 house is now the Maimonides Medical Center Pediatric Clinic.

Blackstoner, actually B&W makes everything look worse. And in fact, in 1971 or 1972 I lived with a gay African American friend in Willoughby Walk and it was no big deal. It was what it was. It was good. I remember watching the WTC go up from his terrace.

As usual, Rob has no clue, and the What rules.

This photo set features a wonderful and now-demolished Dutch homestead, btw. Nice glimpse of a vanished past...in several layers.

The Epilepsy photos on this guys flickr page are a bit disturbing. My aunt has the same condition. Heavy stuff
