Bed Stuy BID Gets OK From City Council

The City Council approved a new business improvement district for Bedford Stuyvesant last week, reports the Brooklyn Eagle. The BID, which covers commercial properties on Fulton Street between Classon and Troy Avenues, came about through the joint efforts of the Fulton-Nostrand United Merchants Association and the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, will have a budget of $675,000 to spend on beautification, safety and economic development efforts. “These services will give small businesses within the district a great opportunity to succeed,” said Council Member Al Vann. The group's 25-person steering committee is headed by Edmon Braithwaite of Nostrand Wines & Liquors and Noah Katz of Foodtown Supermarkets.

I think this is long over due... I think the 675K is every year for the next 10 years. Fulton street is the oldest street in Brooklyn and should look better than it dose today... Lets start with some trees and taking to tacky out of scale signage down.

Wait a minute! The annual budget for this BID is $675,000/annum and Fort Greene and Clinton Hill shopkeepers are upset about a $300,000 assessment? I seem to be missing some fact here.

We have more work to do here and our stretch of Fulton is the size of Ft Greene and Clinton Hill together. Remember there area of Fulton is much smaller

Thanks. I realize that the two BIDs are about the same physical size. I just don't understand the respective psychology of the various merchant communities.

Great! I hope there is a strong clean up effort. I'm tired of stepping over trash in the morning on the way to the train station.

I hope this is a huge success. It is much needed. I hope the public supports the merchants, or it is all a waste. Nothing happens by sitting around waiting for something to be done by others. An improved Fulton Street is a win-win for everyone.

ME too! This is long overdue. No offense to CH but we need it down on our stretch much more-- believe me--it is not a great stroll walking from Olivino in CH home.
This could possibly link the 2 stretches of commerce and wil ultimately be good for all of us.
