Another Rumor: Fast Food for Gage & Tollner Space

gage-tollner-interior-0309.jpgWe were right with our last rumor about the future of the Gage & Tollner space at 374 Fulton Street so we'll plow ahead with this next unconfirmed dispatch: We're hearing that the prospective tenant for the historic eatery is a fast food chain of some sort. No names yet, but we're told that it's a company that currently does not have a presence in the city. Because the interior is landmarked, the deal is contingent upon LPC approval. Sounds like a very bad idea to us. Anyone care to guess what chain it is? Quelle horreur!

Arby's? Long John Silver's? (I haven't had LJS in years. Not that its a bad thing...)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:20 AM

fast food to me means mostly takeout, takeout counters and bunch of cashiers. And I would doubt that for this space.
But perhaps to others fast food means something else.
I could see a chain (sitdown) restaurant for sure as one was there before.

Posted by: Petebklyn at March 6, 2009 10:22 AM

Fuddruckers?

Posted by: fexleycb at March 6, 2009 10:22 AM

snappy, arby's and LJS are all over nyc (well at least down here near fulton street...) blech!

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 6, 2009 10:25 AM

Please let it be a Cheescake factory!!!!!!!

Posted by: columbiatch at March 6, 2009 10:30 AM

There is an LJS on Fulton??? Where?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:30 AM

cheesecake factory? i think there may be one in LI but none in the boroughs or NYC.

Posted by: bkny at March 6, 2009 10:31 AM

brooklyn is in dire need of a HOOTERS! (im serious). i had my 28th and 29th birthday at the hooters in midtown and i never had a more fun time. those hooters waitresses love me!!! (tho i must say there must be some kind of weird anti discrimination policy going on cuz the waitresses in the manhattan hooters are pretty busted and dont live up to the name of the restaurant!

*r*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at March 6, 2009 10:33 AM

Atomic wings?

Posted by: boroughbred at March 6, 2009 10:34 AM

I seriously doubt any true fast food franchise would want the headache of trying to match their business model to a landmarked interior....its not like retail space is hard to come by these days.

Posted by: fsrg at March 6, 2009 10:35 AM

It's hard to imagine what would be good in that space. With a BBQ's, Juniors', Applebees and IHOP all within walking distance, what's left to cover?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:36 AM

"the waitresses in the manhattan hooters are pretty busted and dont live up to the name of the restaurant"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Rob, you slay me!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:37 AM

Famous Dave's would seem logical, but they are planning to open one in Times Square soon.

Posted by: GreeneTuck at March 6, 2009 10:37 AM

Whoever owns the Lundy's name ought to try and recoop their investment (after running their last two places into the ground) and open here - it combines the perfect tourist spot (w/lots of new hotels nearby) with the businessmans/lawyers lunch spot.

Posted by: fsrg at March 6, 2009 10:37 AM

snappy you are right, i thought there was one but i am wrong. sorr to get your hopes up ;-p

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 6, 2009 10:38 AM

I'm trying to start the rumor the Marco Polo guys will re-open Gage and Tollner.

If we all spread the rumor it might create enough buzz to entice them to really do it...

just a thought...

Posted by: christopher at March 6, 2009 10:38 AM

IN AND OUT BURGER!!!

Posted by: randolph at March 6, 2009 10:45 AM

Maybe Panera Bread -- very popular in the burbs. Not bad sandwiches/salads/soups and baked goods/breads. Free Wi-Fi. Don't think there are any in the city now. Of course there is always the Brooklyn customer service factor with franchises (like Target). Who knows?

Posted by: island107 at March 6, 2009 10:45 AM

I hope it's an In and Out Burger.

Posted by: 11217 at March 6, 2009 10:46 AM

PF Chang's

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 10:46 AM

But there are 2 McDonalds, a Wendy's and a Burger King on Fulton Mall. Would In & Out Burger make sense?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:48 AM

That's a good guess Dave. I'm sure they'd do really well there.

Posted by: 11217 at March 6, 2009 10:48 AM

Boston Market

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 6, 2009 10:50 AM

I think it's way too large a space for In and Out Burger, but a girl can dream.

Posted by: 11217 at March 6, 2009 10:50 AM

Benihana?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at March 6, 2009 10:55 AM

In and Out Burgers = Overrated
or maybe cause I don't like fast food, period!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at March 6, 2009 10:55 AM

Hot Bird!

Posted by: buttermilk channel at March 6, 2009 10:55 AM

Hmmm. Based on the landmarked decor, it could be an Uno's pizzeria. Something like that would probably be successful in this location.

Why isn' there any good Chinese in Brooklyn? A better question might be "Why is there so much bad Chinese in Brooklyn???" Bed Stuy is littered with Chinese takeout...each one worse than the next. And, surprisingly, most of them are actually run by Cantonese!!!! It baffles my mind how god awful they are.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 10:58 AM

There are a couple above average Chinese places in Park Slope. And then there are some GREAT ones down in Sunset Park, Dave.

Posted by: 11217 at March 6, 2009 11:01 AM

Anyone here surprised at all that Rob had his 28th and 29th birthday parties at hooters?

Posted by: Make My Heights the P Heights at March 6, 2009 11:03 AM

I want delivery, 11217. Chinese is all about delivery.

They can't even get the f*&king fried rice right over here.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 11:04 AM

Friendly's, UNO Pizza, Cheesecake Factory might fit with the decor of the space...though not sure if CF fits definition of "fast food".

Unfortunately, I believe the family that owns In n Out Burger has stated they have no plans to venture far out of Cali (only a few stores just out of Cali's border for now). So you can only hope for those cups with the religious phrases underneath.

Posted by: goldie at March 6, 2009 11:08 AM

Having lived in Chicago from 1978 to 1994, UNO's is absolute crap.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 11:11 AM

Having eaten at UNO's I can vouch for the craptasticness of it.

Posted by: christopher at March 6, 2009 11:18 AM

Also, UNOs doesnt fir the bill; they have one on the UWS.

Posted by: Prodigal_Son at March 6, 2009 11:22 AM

Holy crap!

Posted by: sam at March 6, 2009 11:58 AM

Macaroni Grill, Chilis, Outback, Cracker Barrel..I grew up in Jersey, I could go on.

Posted by: bowl of dicks at March 6, 2009 12:20 PM

I always laugh a little over the posts concerning the horror of what will happen to the old G&T site. I mean, I went there several times over the last two months of its existence, and almost every time I was there, it was 75% empty. If it was truly missed by this many people, it wouldn't have closed in the first place, but the honest truth that nobody seems willing to admit is that barely anybody went anymore. It reminded me of something in the mold of Delmonico's meets the Oyster Bar meets Luger's, but of course, it wasn't as great as any of those, and it was also on crappy Fulton Street at the time, surrounding by hair extensions and cell phones.

"i had my 28th and 29th birthday at the hooters in midtown and i never had a more fun time."

Class all the way.....

Posted by: East New York at March 6, 2009 12:55 PM

^^^^^pretty much the same regarding the bellyaching over coney island.

Posted by: goldie at March 6, 2009 12:56 PM

Cracker Barrel?

Posted by: gwbrubaker at March 6, 2009 1:34 PM

"Anyone here surprised at all that Rob had his 28th and 29th birthday parties at hooters?"

Actually, I'm quite surprised that Rob has any interest hanging around a place with that much cleavage (at least on a woman and in that area of the body).

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 6, 2009 1:58 PM

"Anyone here surprised at all that Rob had his 28th and 29th birthday parties at hooters?"

Yeah, I woulda though he would have had it at HunkMania...

Howzabout Dennys? Maybe they think folx in Brooklyn forgot about how they used to run things.

Posted by: denton at March 6, 2009 2:11 PM

Perhaps it will that Scotish chain, Hagus King?

Posted by: BobfromBklyn at March 6, 2009 2:32 PM

Atomic Wings just opened up on Smith, just a few blocks away. Benihana would be great, but there's one on W 56th already.

Posted by: dans at March 6, 2009 2:32 PM

denton...Cracker Barrel had a lot of those "issues" as well.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 2:37 PM

Hopefully it'll be a place that people will actually go to, because they sure didn't when it was G&T's. Love how personally invested everyone here seems...

Posted by: spnder at March 6, 2009 2:45 PM

I am thinking either Cracker Barrel or Cheesecake Factory - they both could make the interior work for them! Sad, but true!

Posted by: NYC Shopper at March 6, 2009 3:06 PM

An otb.

Posted by: Xander Crews at March 6, 2009 3:17 PM

I think that there's an Uno's in Bay Ridge. I'm chanting Cheesecake Factory.

Posted by: BrooklynIsHome at March 6, 2009 3:23 PM

I *heart* Cracker Barrel. Please let it be, just for the irony of being on Fulton.

Posted by: goldie at March 6, 2009 3:33 PM

Ha, I can't imagine a store with "cracker" in its name opening up on the Fulton Mall. It has to be a place that does all its business by 4:00 PM. I say it will be an international house of pancakes.

Posted by: mcKenzie at March 6, 2009 3:37 PM

"I say it will be an international house of pancakes."

There's already one on Livingston St.

Posted by: East New York at March 6, 2009 3:46 PM

Already an Uno's on 6th Ave in the Village as well--its been there forever. Benihana actually started in midtown. For me, Cracker Barrel screams "roadtrip" Can't see it in NYC. Cheesecake Factory would fit perfectly in that space. Their salads are great and the avocado egg rolls are good too.

Posted by: ilikeslices at March 6, 2009 3:52 PM

"I say it will be an international house of pancakes."

"There's already one on Livingston St."

Apparently there is room for another as the one on Livingston Street is apparently the busiest one of all the franchises.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 6, 2009 4:03 PM

Cheesecake Factory is very white bread. more Alexandria Mall than Fulton Mall.

Posted by: mcKenzie at March 6, 2009 4:06 PM

I can't see it being Cracker Barrel on the Fulton Mall. Sure, the food would be a hit, but I recall the chain having problems in the past with properly serving some of our darker Americans. Perhaps they've sorted all that out....

Posted by: Beau Guest at March 6, 2009 4:59 PM

I bet they bring back the TGIFriday's.

Posted by: buttermilk channel at March 6, 2009 5:06 PM

"Cracker" Barrel on Fulton St. I like that.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at March 6, 2009 5:26 PM

There's only one Chili's in the five-boro area, and it's in Flushing. Just saying.

Posted by: Brooklyn Chicken at March 6, 2009 7:44 PM

It is going to be a Pizza Hut, you fools. For sure.
