9th Street Fire Guts Grace Cleaners

grace-cleaners-fire-0309-b.jpgRemember the tip we got yesterday about a big fire on 9th Street? Turns out it was indeed a real fire (and not part of the movie getting filmed on the corner) and quite a devastating one at that: Grace Cleaners, and from the looks of it, all the apartments above it at 511 9th Street were completely gutted, reports the blog In My Back Yard. We've yet to hear what started the fire. Anyone know? GMAP

I found it odd yesterday that once someone said that it was a real fire, not part of the movie, people continued obsessing over film unions and PA licenses plates.......

it's also slightly ironic that those annoying women from green apple cleaners were cluttering the union street R stop handing out flyers this morning.

PHfamily, that was indeed surreal. there were lives possibly in danger, and the focus was on unions and movie industry jobs. Don't get me wrong, I'm from L.A. where I used to work in the 'industry' and get the passions around the issue...but its about right time/place.

This is truly devasting for all of those people involved

I think us folks who had mentioned the movie set really didn't expect it to be a real fire b/c that exact part of the nabe was closed down for filming.

I feel very sorry for the popole who lost their homes.
The real estate lesson here, is to beware of living above cleaners or restaurants in a small, non-fireproof building.

I used to get my dry cleaning and laundry done there and I feel terrible for the family that ran Grace Cleaners. They were always so nice and ran a reliable business. I'm glad that no one was hurt and I'm sorry that people lost their homes. It's very sad to lose such a small, but important fixture on that block.

This fire looks similar to the one that last month damaged and closed down the cleaners next to the Pioneer on Lafayette across from Choice. They have reopened this week. Wondering if there is some issue with dust fires in their exhausts? I suppose same threat exists to grease exhausts from restaurants.

There was also a fire in a cleaners on Montague Street.

The family that ran Grace was a lovely family.
I particularly enjoyed greeting the man on the modified Vespa who did deliveries for them.
I hope they can rebuild.
I guess it's petty to worry about my five shirts.

I read somewhere that fire officials believe it was a faulty boiler.

It's terrible. I really like the family; nice people. They had a good business -- and honestly they were the best deal around.
