Wacky Times in Crown Heights

804-Bergen-Street-0209.jpg
Desperate times call for desperate measures. What to do when the market tanks on you mid-construction? Buy some different shades of green paint and apply liberally. We shall see whether the paint job will translate into sales at the 10-unit, Scarano-designed 804 Bergen Street. Bets? GMAP

Bob has definitely gone off the deep-end. Nothing else to say. Get off the dope.

Posted by: Action Jackson at February 9, 2009 11:36 AM

I shall be calling down the demons of archtecture but I like it. (Montrose will kill me. Kill me.)

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 11:37 AM

Bets? Yes ... I bet it goes rental.

Posted by: cwbuecheler at February 9, 2009 11:37 AM

It's the 'wave' of the future.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 9, 2009 11:40 AM

Uhhh only reason I can come up with doing this is that the building's not plumb and they're trying to deceive the eye?

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 9, 2009 11:41 AM

It's a tribute to the crowds at Yankee Stadium who do the Wave. Go Yankees!

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 11:44 AM

"Scarano-designed"

/endofdiscussion

Posted by: BoerumHill at February 9, 2009 11:48 AM

Is he pissed at the neighbors across the street that reported him to the DOB so he's trying to make them forever nauseous??

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 9, 2009 11:49 AM

Wave indeed. As in "wave goodbye to your equity."

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 9, 2009 11:50 AM

It is wacky. But not nearly as hideous as some of the fedders buildings that have gone up. And I'm no Scarano fan but it just seems like a bit of fun. That said, I think it will be a rental.

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 11:55 AM

I wouldn't want that shit across the street from me.

How 'bout that A-Rod!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 9, 2009 11:59 AM

I walked by this last week on the way to a friend's place for dinner and even in the dark it made me shudder. There are several hideous new constructions on Bergen between Vanderbilt and Franklin, but this may have been the worst of the bunch.

Posted by: JIPS at February 9, 2009 12:02 PM

Dibs, he's such a egomaniac that's he's got 2 names, in the playoffs he's E-ROD.

Posted by: DeLepp at February 9, 2009 12:02 PM

When did Horror Show Friday move to Monday?

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 9, 2009 12:03 PM

'but I like it'

'but it just seems like a bit of fun'

bxgrl - you're asking for a beating today! Wait till EVLL wakes up from her beauty sleep, removes the black satin eye mask, pops a couple of truffles in her mouth followed by caviar.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 9, 2009 12:04 PM

g-ds! I feel so alone. I guess it just reminds me of some of the painted buildings I've seen around the country and it doesn't look like it took itself too seriously.

Just want everyone to know I actually do have excellent artistic taste despite this obvious aberration.

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 12:05 PM

Take the wave back to Shea/Citi

Posted by: Farkus at February 9, 2009 12:06 PM

Did i not say I would call down the demons of architecture on my poor hapless head? (hee hee hee- the Great EVLL is out at the moment, the cat ate the truffles and I ate the caviar).

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 12:07 PM

i laughed, but then again I don't live across the street.

Posted by: Maly at February 9, 2009 12:11 PM

Ok even Ill admit - that is glaringly ugly

Posted by: fsrg at February 9, 2009 12:19 PM

it wouldn't look so bad if those waves were pink instead of yellow.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 9, 2009 12:35 PM

rob...I didn't know you were color blind. They are a shade of green

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 9, 2009 12:39 PM

on the upside, being visually disorienting will make it harder to do a drive-by shooting on it.

Posted by: goldie at February 9, 2009 1:13 PM

Is that painted or aren't those waves appliqued on the facade? I se a slight shadow and the lines bewtwwn the building blocks seem to stop at the white. Could be just my computer.

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 1:32 PM

'those waves appliqued on the facade'

bxgrl - now you're just trying to justify liking this......applique!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 9, 2009 1:35 PM

it's similar to the karalahari (sp?) building that went up recently in harlem. it has the same wiggley pattern on it, but i think the colors on the one in harlem are shades of beige and brown

*r*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 9, 2009 1:44 PM

bxgrl, I agree with you, it's quite pleasant and a refreshing change from the brown, brown, brown and more brown. With black railings.

What's wrong with color? I wait for a SF-style renaissance here.

Posted by: cmu at February 9, 2009 1:49 PM

I suspect that they are different colored tiles. An even bigger bummer since the paint could have been easily changed.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 9, 2009 1:50 PM

awwww, dave! You're not comforting me and I'm already having anxiety about work, and now, my artistic creds.

Thanks cmu. And fyi- the new computer is great and I love vista, although it can be way too chatty cathy. It's so purty!

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 2:07 PM

This looks just like the "Lotus" on McCarren Park. Same green & tan wavy styling:

Posted by: MotoGP at February 9, 2009 2:11 PM

DIBS, my guess is that this is basically a painted stucco job. The lines in the green area were carved in to create the effect of blocks.

I wouldn't want to tie one on and come home to this place , but if I were a neighbor I wouldn't mind it so much. Since when have blander Scarano offerings looked any better than this?

Posted by: slopefarm at February 9, 2009 2:13 PM

I'm bacccckkk! Feeling rather charitable today, since I just got a decent sized project from a client. Yeah! Mortgage money!

I'm going to let this one pass. It ain't great, but it could be worse. I wish it wasn't set back so far, that always ruins new construction. I also guess tile, or paint is the new (and cheaper) architectural ornament, but this building needed some zing, and it showed some imagination. The windows are good sized and the balconies reference the fire escapes next door, and add some context to the design. I wish I could see the lobby and ground floor, but
all in all, much better than some of the other buildings in the area.

See, I don't hate everything new.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 9, 2009 2:20 PM

Congrats on the gig, MM.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 9, 2009 2:25 PM

isn't is setback the same as the building on the right?

btw, did google streetview go away? was trying to look at this building on google maps, and there's only terrain, traffic and map?

Posted by: cmu at February 9, 2009 2:35 PM

Google changed the streetview interface, cmu.

Either click the "street view" link in the pop-up balloon, or drag the little yellow guy from the top of the scale down to the map.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 9, 2009 2:38 PM

ooohhh- now I don't have to sweep the cinders any more! Does this mean I get a choice of whole wheat or even....oatmeal toast with my water, MM?

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 2:38 PM

Since it is next to another fugly building, it doesn't really matter.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 9, 2009 2:51 PM

I's good to keep all the fugly together. Maybe the city could rezone certain areas only for fugly.

Posted by: bxgrl at February 9, 2009 3:24 PM

I also bet they go rental.

Posted by: KHuebbe at February 9, 2009 3:42 PM

I think Goldie is on to something. Reminds me of the type of dazzle camoflage schemes painted on WW1 battleships to outwit German U-Boats.

Posted by: IMBY at February 9, 2009 4:00 PM

Thanks, snark. Can't believe anyone would prefer what's on google (pre paint job)...I guess I'd better work on my paint job before Landmarks gets to my part of the Slope...;)

Posted by: cmu at February 9, 2009 4:20 PM

cmu -- you could be the next flamingo pink house, like the one on Garfield. Do your painted lady thing before Landmarks gets to you.

Posted by: slopefarm at February 9, 2009 4:59 PM

cmu, You could one-up up the dazzle camouflage with an industrial Bedazzler. Everybody needs a little bling.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 9, 2009 5:14 PM

DIBS and bxgrl may be on to something. Maybe a landmark district for the visually offensive! FUGCH (Fugly in Crown Heights)

Posted by: GHB at February 9, 2009 5:40 PM

Fuggle Hill?

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 9, 2009 5:45 PM

I could start a Painted Dowager thing in Brooklyn...tho' pink's not my thing, how about a tasteful teal-and-mustard?

Posted by: cmu at February 9, 2009 5:56 PM

How '70s looking!

But, back then, stuff like this was done in a pathetic attempt to give a fresh look to run down buildings (without making any substantive improvements). It wasn't done for new construction, even shoddy dreck like this.

Posted by: Bob Marvin at February 9, 2009 5:57 PM

what do u guys think of the big building down the block it also has a facade with different colors

Posted by: proudofbrooklyn at February 9, 2009 6:33 PM

Posted by: proudofbrooklyn at February 9, 2009 6:33 PM

So what do you guys Really Think of the quartet of houses on Carroll betw 6-7th Avs which are painted yellow, white and blue (ims)? I think they're a welcome change from the drabness that surrounds me.

Posted by: cmu at February 9, 2009 7:09 PM

It's not that bad.

Posted by: nyc87 at February 9, 2009 8:41 PM

I live next door and every night when I come home have to look at how ugly that building is. It makes me nauseous when I see it.

That said, the little tree that is stuck in the fence was mine and thrills me to no end whenever I see it.

I am more curious about the empty lot across the street. Contruction started on it last spring, lasted all of two months and no one has been back since.
