Timeless Treasures Not So Timeless After All

timeless-treasures-0209.jpgBrooklyn just got a little more Godless. Timeless Treasures, the 5,000-square-foot Christian-themed store at 163 Livingston Street in Downtown Brooklyn, has departed for the afterlife, according to a post from McBrooklyn; the blog was unable to track down any specific reason for the closure. This is such a strange strip it's hard to imagine what will fill the space next. Ideas? GMAP

Please let it be a gay bar.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 26, 2009 10:58 AM

...or a sex club...

I just assumed it was part of that big church with entrance on Smith St (which originally was movie theater that had entrance on Fulton)

...or both . Bring back the "back rooms."

This block is indeed weird. When going to Carroll Gardens from the North Slope my preferred route takes me down this block, I always passed this store. It seems like they could reopen in Marine Park's King Plaza or along Ralph Avenue, there's always storefronts there I think.

i've got to imagine the brownstone area of bklyn ranks very low in active religious involvement (reading books, buying xtian tchotchkes), unless this was left over from pre 'gentrification' days?

rob, agree. i liked the rock-em-sock-em nuns until urbanoutfitters starting carrying those too.

As the second poster on McBrooklyn noted, there was a sign indicating, by name, that another religious books, etc. store was coming. Like that poster, I did not note the name.

goldie, I don't think you realize just how many people attend services at the Brooklyn Tabernacle every week.

goldie...that certainly isn't true of Bed Stuy!!!!!

I think Brooklyn is still pretty religious.
Not only the Old Guard but also the immigrant communities.
Park Slopians are perhaps not so religious, they're into Al Gore and the gospel of self-absorption. But most other neighborhoods have very active churches and synagogues.
Park Slope does too, I'm just joshing.

The Brooklyn Tabernacle has over 10,000 members that attend 3 services on Sunday and they also have outreach programs that include FREE ESL classes, GED classes and parenting classes to anyone interested throughout the week at their Learning Center on Livingston. The church choir has also won 6 Grammy awards.
The church is opening their own bookstore in the spot that Timeless Treasures vacated.
The church is interdenominational, extremely welcoming and a wonderful place to visit. I love it!

NYCS, tell me more about these GED classes. Been trying to find some for an employee of mine. No mention on their website.

FYI: this church is also anti-gay.

Posted by: timber at February 26, 2009 1:59 PM

Tabernacle as in Latter Day Saints as in Mormon? Don't think you can just drop in on those classes without paying with your eternal soul.

Denton - http://downtownlearningcenter.org/

mopar - no, tabernacle in a more general term - it is not affiliated with LDS. Take a look at the learning center website - good people offering things to help the community - no strings attached. (there are still some of these type of folks still around)

This church has many members many of whom come from all over the city (not just Brooklyn) to worship here. In some parts of Brooklyn, there are churches in every corner. I believe there will be a new store opening some time in March or April.
