Streetlevel: New Japanese Restaurant at 385 Flatbush

shitake-flatbush-0209.jpg
A new Japanese restaurant is about to open on the Prospect Heights side of Flatbush Avenue between Sterling Place and Plaza Street East. Called Shitake (after the mushroom, presumably, not the stomach ailment), the new establishment replaces chain restaurant Wok N Roll. No advance word on the quality level but, as one Brooklynian commenter put it, "it can't be worse than wok n roll." GMAP

they should have gone with the more correct (?) spelling of "Shiitake" to avoid the obvious jokes that'll be made especially if the food turns out to be bad.

Isn't the common name for Lentinula edodes spelled "shiitake?"

Posted by: altervoce at February 10, 2009 2:39 PM

i just googled it and its spelled both ways.

just walked by it today. Hopefully its not a sushi place.

My advice: go next door and buy a beef pattie.

If it's a sushi place run by Chinese, it very well will be worse than Wok n Roll...and I can say this, being Chinese and all...my peeps can cook but they can't do raw...

Wow, this place has yet to open and people are already making negative comments about it. Classic brownstoner...

Wok and Roll was not bad if you ordered off the menu in Cantonese! (Can you say, "Heung gong sik won ton min"?) The phony Sichuan slop that they foisted onto unwitting gwailos, though, was truly awful.

That row of buildings is owned by Ms. Fang, the Dragon Lady landlord of Flatbush Avenue, so you can be sure that the new sushi place is somehow connected to my Middle Kingdom brothers.

i'll just go get a pattie.

I hear its a great place to eat and service is terrific and the food is terrific. you should stop in and try it.

i actually tried the food, there is sushi stuff but the menu is eclectic and diverse and everything is fresh and made to order. The srvie was great and the prices reasonalbe. I left the restaurant assured to myself that I would be back. The sushi is much better than Geido too. just try it and see for yourself.
