Storefront Turnover on 7th Avenue
Lots of changes on 7th Avenue in The Slope, according to OTBKB. Restaurant New Orleans's brief run is over despite being a "lovely place." On a more positive note, Cohen's Optical is opening on 7th Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets. And on the corner of 8th Street, a new coffee shop will replace the Launder Center. Good news for all the freelancers in the nabe.

Yes, one wonders why Cohen's decided to open one block from Urban Optical. Urban Optical rocks by the way.

The best is Brooklyn Eyeworks on 5th Ave and 14th Street.
They are AMAZING!!!
Optical stores are nice to have around I guess. I don't know why we have so many, but I noticed last time I was in Buenos Aires that there is literally an optical store ever 2-3 blocks. I kid you not.

Short answer: because the mark-up is enormous.

In Hong Kong there are two per block!!! Some small malls have 5-6 of them.
If I remeber, 11217, you got called out on not being able to make any observations about Buenos Aires because you didn't live there long enough!!!! :)

I know, Dave. I almost prefaced my remark with an addendum.

Our favorite optical shop is on 7th Ave and President; Michael Stoff, the optometrist, is a real gent and a master fitter. Lots of super $$ frames but he'll work with you on a budget, too.

11217, ive been to B.A. several times (going back in april) and dont recall so many optical stores that it jumped out at me. were you in recoleta with all the oldsters, or just had one too many fernet brancas?

I was all over the city, Goldie. Mostly in Palermo (which is where I've stayed both times) but certainly did pop over to the Recoleta from time to time. I think I'll be back in April as well!

Brenda,
Isn't that Michael's shop selling its furnishings on teh forum today? Are they closing? renovating?
Posted by: slopefarm at February 17, 2009 2:55 PM
Yeah, I walked by the shop on President and 7th the other day and I think that's the place that is selling their fixtures on the forum and I suppose, closing...

is it true that brownstoner thinks opening a chain store cohens optical is a positive note for park slope? would brownstoner be for a gap, benettons, mcdonalds, office depot etc. any other chains would you like to see in park slope or for that matter clinton hill brownstoner? just curious

Mule:
I can't speak for brownstoner, but while I'd rather see some adorable mom and pop store open up selling more fragrant soaps for the bathroom on 7th Avenue, I do enjoy seeing a vacant storefront being filled at a time of one of the worst economic times we have seen in 100 years.
So yes, bring on whatever would like to open right now. It's better than empty and abandoned, which might not be too far away.
There are more than enough other spaces for rent along every retail strip in Brooklyn right now to cater to exactly what it seems you might be looking for at this time.

Late to this, but must second the comment that Brooklyn Eyeworks on 5th Ave and 14th is great. And I agree that it's nice SOMETHING -- even another glasses/bank/cell store--is moving into the vacant storefront. (Which, sorry to speak ill of the dead, I found out was home to one of the wort laundromats in existence when our washing machine was on the fritz.)
