Public Place Demo Only Started Last Week? Really?

As we reported last week, a DOB permit for the demolition of the Manufactured Gas Plant building at Smith and Huntington in Gowanus was granted on February 6 and an was followed by an email from to bloggers and community groups saying that work would be "starting soon." Imagine the surprise of photoblogger Nate Kensinger when he snuck in over the weekend only to find the interior of the 125,000-square-foot building largely gutted already. Kensinger sent a bunch of photos to Gowanus Lounge, who included them in a post warning the public "Do Not Go Near This Thing." While inside, Kensinger spotted a Stop Work Order dated February 12. However, "There is not much left to stop work on," he notes. "The entire factory is almost gone."

Who cares? It is going to sit like this for many years. What was the rush?
