Sunset Park Tops Brooklyn's List of Poopiest Nabes

pooper-scooper-slope-0209.jpgBrooklyn came in second last year in the number of pooper-scooper violations; the County of Kings racked up 224 citations after Da Bronx's 354, reports The New York Post. The places you most have to watch your step? Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace (which The Post calls Park Slope) and, rather appropriately, Brownsville. Look out below.

HA! i just read about manhattan's poopiest neighborhood and it turns out being the UWS (tho more specifically western harlem) and it's true. i cant tell you how many times i stepped in poop up there. also it's frowned upon up there to pick up after your dog and yes, "fa&&y" to do so as i was told numerous times picking up my dogs dumplings. also the fact that too many dog owners up there refused to use leashes. im not a griper about things like that but the dogs off leashes was my number one quality of life issue that made me leave upper manhattan. i love my dog, but i dont think ill ever get another dog again living in nyc. there's so much time, energy, and cost that goes into keeping a dog and most of time ill be honest the benefits of having a dog don't outweight the annoyance factor (ugh im sounding like a terrible person with that last comment im sure). the biggest perk of being a gay man is that you don't have kids to have to take care of. the fact that i willingly adopted a dog that is just like a kid is mind boggling. i still love my dog tho and would never give him up. we're stuck with each other.

hardly a statistically significant sample to go by. and there could be a variety of reasons why tickets skew one way or another in various nabes...e.g. cops have nothing better to do on UWS, and there's more foot patrol there than bed-stuy for example.

my sense is there's a stronger correlation to socio-economics. some cultures/classes just care less.

I agree Goldie. I used to live in Greenpoint. South Greenpoint was relatively dog-poop free. North Greenpoint was dog-poop central.

Someone on cCCurbed was suggesting scofflaw dog-owners should do community service picking up dog poop in the poopiest nabes. Excellent idea.

What I don't get is why the scofflaws at least don't make their pooches go in the gutter instead of the sidewalk.

Can dog walkers claim unemployment benefits? I think it is because the economy is tanking fewer and fewer rich people can afford to hire someone to take spike for his evening stroll. Alot of rich folks are not use to cleaning themselves now how can they clean after their animal friends?

i used to have my dog actually go poop in the gutter and was told once by someone that it's not a good thing to do. i dont remember what their reasoning was though.. this wasnt a vent or anything, just a plain gutter on the corner that rainwater goes into.. does anyone know why that might not be a good idea? it used to amuse people when he'd go in the gutter and everyone was like wow he's so well train (lol). people who let their dogs poop and dont pick it up are also people who often litter and throw their dirty diapers down airshafts. it's a lack of respect for one's environment and self and neighbors regardless of what excuse someone might give for it.

i have a dog walker for my dog but i only have one cuz my roommate's dog is mad old and she NEEDS one and i guess we feel if a dog walker came for her and didnt take him it might cause resentment. it's 12 bux each dog a day! that adds up fast. but he gets a nice 1/2 an hour long walk and he does his poopin' during that mid day walk so i havent had to pick up his poop in months. i think it's worth it. plus he is a lot more socialized now that he has a dog walker.

I was wandering around the Far West Village yesterday and there was a TON of dog crap. I totally agree with Goldie.

Hahaha rob - gross! Well i guess the tranny hookers aren't getting enough fiber!

Posted by: dirty_hipster at February 23, 2009 11:17 AM

rob, my guess as to why its considered bad to let your dog drop a deuce in the gutter is b/c that flows directly out to sea w/o processing, whereas your toilet flows to a treatment plant.

i'm shocked at you. when i lived in l.a., the boys of west hollywood were the cleanest, and most diligent at cleaning after their pooches. you'd be banished from WeHo.

Folks are pretty good about this in Crown Heights, and there are a LOT of dog owners on the area (including me). I always pick it up - it's just something you just have to do. When I has a dog as a kid growing up in ENY tho, we NEVER picked it up! That was bad. But our neighborhood had tons of open lots and dirt roads back then. It was really the outskirts and kind of still is.

> "you'd be banished from WeHo."

And thank your lucky stars for that.

And Rob - you realize that some of us gay men have kids. I am currently trying to train my six year old to pick up after our dog. I figure he is much closer to the ground than I am.

You want to see dog crap on sidewalks - go to Buenos Aires. Disgusting...

BOYCOTT THE NY POST

Posted by: East New York at February 23, 2009 12:02 PM

Gutter water in NYC does NOT flow directly into the ocean/bay/harbor/river. It is treated just like the water you flush...which is actually a problem....it is for this reason that when we get a large rain the city is forced to release UNTREATED sewage into our water system because the treatment plants can not handle the runoff that comes from the gutters.

The only reason why it would be bad to let your dog poo into the gutter is because if it doesnt rain for awhile it will smell - especially in the summer.

fsrq, thanks for the clarification. i couldnt remember if it was here or in l.a. (santa monica) that there was an action a while back where they painted a stencil of a fish or something next to all gutters with the reminder that what you dump there goes directly to the sea. guess it was l.a.

Posted by: goldie at February 23, 2009 12:54 PM

But is it legal to let gutter poop stay? Won't you get a ticket for not picking up?

Posted by: cmu at February 23, 2009 1:33 PM

Its not legal - but if you're a dog owner who is going to be an ass and not pick up anyway, at least move the dog to the gutter so we don't all have to step on it, have your kids fall in it etc etc. and generally end up hating you for it.

i once went an entire day at work with crusty poop on my sneaker. and i kept getting a strange whiff. people must have smelled me. i cant believe no one at work even told me i smelled! at the end of the day i was like um did you smell my shoe? and someone was like yeah :-/ if someone smells like poop, tell them.

rob, had a similar embarrassing situation once. was out with a group, smelled sh.t, and i raised a raucus asking everyone in the group to check themselves, trying to find the offender and embarrass them...turns out it was me.

Posted by: goldie at February 23, 2009 2:03 PM

I find that people clean up after their dogs a lot less in the winter than in the summer. I guess they can't be bothered because it's too much trouble to take off their gloves to deal with the bag, or that they don't want to pick up snow along with the poop, or they're just cold and want to go back in, but my neighborhood in Boerum Hill is much less poop infested in the warmer months.

Posted by: bigmissfrenchie at February 23, 2009 4:31 PM

in the winter the poop are like ice pellets. ive found it easier and less as bad to step in cuz it's crunchy in the winter to step on than in the summer when it's well, a big steamin' pile. you might be right tho. i was an a-hole back in the day living in new brunswick nj when i had a dog and i let my dog poop in basically an empty lot. this old lady came out and screamed "pick up after your dog a--hole!" i called her something nasty and left. ugh. i would never do that again. honestly i didnt think it was a law or that it was part of life with a dog. i just thought dogs poop whereever as long as it wasnt on the sidewalk it was fine. living in nyc for the last 8 year has proven otherwise. PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOGS SKANKS!

If the statistic cam out now can you imagine what is going to happen during the warmer months? We are going to be fillid with tranny turds and dog poo up to our necks. i am sure the mayor is going to come up with a plan to make money off of this for our wonderful city.
