Seeing the early start DIBS and The What got off to in the first thread today, I was reminded by the old Sheepdog and Wolf cartoon. Remember the two of them, Sam and Ralph, would exchange pleasantries, punch into work, try to kill each other all day long, and then punch out and say goodnight?

Good thing you corrected that. I was going to launch into a tirade about the grammatical error next :)

Biff, Sam and Ralph were far more civil!

re: that new sex club in brooklyn that was talked about here (or maybe somewhere else?) yesterday. i just read about it in the ny times. it looks hysterical. ive never been to a sex club but i think i want to go to this one and see what it's like (not to participate tho!). but i love watching all kinds of porn and i think it would be funny to see it live. the thing is i thought these places werent allowed to run anymore? im glad they do exist tho. the thing i find annoying is the pricing
single men - 90 dollars (WHOA!)
couples - 40 dollars. wtf?
"hot sex club gold females"? - free :-/ should i put on a wig and some acrylic heels to try to get in for free? does anyone wanna come along with me so we can get the 40 dollar discount? hahahah

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 26, 2009 9:32 AM
What new sex club??? Given what is allowed in NYC titty bars I suspect this will be a giant rip off. You got to go to Canada (or bangkok, even better) for good sex clubs. Right, Biff?
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 9:35 AM
i could have sworn there was a blog post here yesterday about it, unless it was a link to another blog... maybe that was it.. it might have linked to curbed, but i was shocked to see the ny times article portraying it in such a positive light! maybe old school nyc really IS coming back?! this club is near the BQE. maybe that will become the new old school time square. that would rock so hard!

A friend of mine and her girlfriend go to sex clubs a few times a year. From what she tells me, there are plenty of them in NYC - they are just underground and 'members only.' I guess it's all about who you know to find them and get an invitation. Apparently there are several types - my friend goes to the one where you just watch folks go at it then go home with your own sweetie pie and let 'er rip!

Probably those cops, postmen and bus drivers are still on the clock as well. Shall I start on the unions now????

wasder- wine and tranquilizers? I think the zen atmosphere went out the window with the plant I threw. Can you grit your teeth and say ommmmm at the same time while twisting the neck of your favorite teddy bear (steiff)? Will that work?

Snark will want the gown also!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 9:54 AM
What was the Times angle, rob? It seems odd. To report on the opening of one of these dinosaurs given that "anyone" can come to this one, given they've got 90 bucks to spare. Sort of reminiscent of Trapeze or some of the old school sex clubs in San Fran during the early 90's or the non-safe ones in the mid 70's, of which there were MANY.
Most of the clubs these days are by invite only and tend to encourage "hotness" to a huge degree.
Biff, I loved those cartoons! You just made my day.

Wasder, I reclaim my zen feeling by going to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Outside of the symphony (with Maazel conducting of course) there is no greater sense of release. Take a walk through there for at least one hour and I dare you to even conjure up a bad image/thought. It's impossible in that place. So beautiful. So peaceful. Ok, so now you all know where I'll be this weekend.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden is a good idea snappy, although wine and tranquilizers don't sound too bad either. I am also going to take a vow of celibacy against getting into it with What or BHO (who I am starting to think are the same person again).

Thanks snark. Its not often that I get rattled like this but the recession has definitely done a doozy on my business, at least until summer when all the big rock concerts happen and I know I have business lined up. Plus this morning my nearly 3 year old drove me to the limit. Hence my grouchiness.
And yes, I have had it up to here with discussing how crappy the economy is with anyone. I am going to stick to calmer waters.

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 26, 2009 10:13 AM
Good morning folks;
Keep the chin up! Put things in perspective. Remember, this country has been through alot: civil war, WWII, multiple great depressions (we tend to talk about the Great Depression of the 1920's, but the ones in the 19th century were actually alot worse). Whenever I'm down about things, I always think about what my dad went through: born into a broken immigrant family, grew up in the depression, and then was drafted into WWII at the age of 17, and shipped off to fight in his parent's home country (Italy). I could also tell you stories about what his family went through working in the factories of Red Hook. Thinking about that puts things in perspective for me.
Snark: I have a follow-up comment to you on the thread about Gailbraith and Krugman.

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 26, 2009 10:22 AM
thinking about things like that don't put things into perspective for me, benson. people back then were studier, more resilient to hard times, and in general more well-rounded when it comes to survival. what are glorified paper-pushers of today's society to do if things really DO get tough? and back then joining in a war (granted if you got out of it alive) gave you and your family a set steady income for life, no? i dont know about that last part im sort of just assuming that there are great benefits to people who join the military and army and stuff. hells the janitor at my job was in the military and he gets to go to this special supermarket near the fort hamilton parkway(?) that has special prices for people and their families who were inlisted. he told me the prices of food i was like wow that's awesome!. okay that was a tangent, but the thing is that i think we not prepared for hard times because as a peoples we've become lazy in general. that's why crime was so rampant in the 70s and 80s. the 50s caused us to be so leisure-like and expect life to be a fairy tale. for 99.9 percent of people life is HARD and always a struggle. if you think life is supposed to be easy and youre not prepared to struggle and put hard work and effort to gain a minimal amount of sufficiency it's so much easier to turn to crime and drugs.

Greenwood Cemetery:
One of my favorite places in Brooklyn (I’ve only said it on here a zillion times). Definitely worth the trip. If you're walking, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for very hilly long walks (the place is huge).
Truthfully, hubby and I drive in, and drive around. We pull over by the side, park and walk a bit.
- Grab a map of the celebrities buried there and go on a hunt for their graves.
- Walk up the steps of Mausoleums and peer through the windows to see beautiful stained glass.
- Pack a lunch, sit by one of the lakes and enjoy the tranquility.
It’s stunningly beautiful in every season.

BRG, did you see my answer to your question about the house a couple days ago?
We've decided to go ahead and buy the place.
But only on the condition they let us have a second inspection and it does not reveal advanced termite infestation and foundation problems (the walls are bowing, so the first inspector said we should get a second opinion).
The place has been empty for a long time. We know there's a little termite problem and we can deal with it, but our nightmare is opening the walls to put in the new electrical and finding every one wriggling with thousands of termites. AAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUGGHHHHHHHHHH.

Many of you have waxed poetic about Toto toilets on various threads.
Here's an update on the company....
Executive Vice President Uzuka gave a solid presentation to a small group of 20-30 investors. Toto is Japan’s largest maker of sanitary ware, including toilets and sinks. Like many companies in Japan, they company is suffering from current weakness in the housing market, but longer-term, domestic remodeling and oversea markets are growth areas to look forward to.
Uzuka-san explained that one of the reasons for Toto’s strength is their ability to propose a new lifestyle. Toto has won various prizes for innovative technologies, including “Washlet” toilets, which now has a 70% penetration in the domestic market since its launch 30 years ago. Toto is also proposing for a “washlet” culture overseas, and sales have been steadily growing from ~50k units in 2003, to now over 300k units in the overseas market.
Near-term: Toto recently revised down their FY outlook, and now looks for a 70% drop in earnings on a 6% sales decline. Although they will be benefiting from ¥3.7b cost reduction, negative factors like sales decline, price cuts, and increase material prices are much larger.
Domestic market (sales breakdown: remodeling 52%, new housing 30%): Toto admits that there is not much prospect for new housing starts to grow again (despite various efforts made by the government) due to declining population and the number of house stocks (47m) exceeding the number of households (54m). Growth in domestic market will come from “remodeling”. Remodeling demand is expected to grow because of the increase in number of houses that are older than 15 years. Toto estimates this demand to be 1.6m/year.
Overseas (13% of sales): more exciting growth market. North & Central America and China accounts for majority of sales, and sales in these markets are expected to increase 18% and 3% respectably on local currency base for FY3/09. Toto’s competitive edge in the oversea market lies in their technology including ultra water-conservative toilets (20% reduction in water usage). Some cities have introduced a subsidy for this.
North & Central America (41% of overseas sales): Toto’s focus here is in the high-end market, with 28% market share. Co’s ultra-water conservative toilet has received a high evaluation, and California decided to make it obligatory to install 4.8% per flush toilets from 2011.
China (36% of oversea sales): Focus is also on high end, with 38% market share. Company is leveraging TV commercials and showrooms to promote their product. Margins are high in this market due to better sales mix of high-end products like washlets.
Other overseas markets with growth opportunities are Europe (since 2008), UAE (since 2005), India (since 2001). Europe is the world’s largest market (44% of the global market) and is a highly competitive for high-end brands, but Toto expects sales to reach ¥10b sales in this region in FY2011

what are we going to do with you?
Green-wood cemetery was specifically designed for strolling, gazing and picnicing. Before there was a Prospect Park, Brooklyn families would pack a lunch and head for Green-wood for the afternoon, maybe to say hello to the ancestors, maybe not, but definitely to enjoy nature and see a beautiful romantic landscape. Really, that was the reason the cemetery was designed so beautifully and romantically. Google Green-wood and read about it, it is very interesting. You would like it, there are no horses. Although there are wild turkeys here and there.

I can't help but smile when I see a story about a toilet company that begins with the line, "Executive Vice President Uzuka gave a solid presentation"
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 26, 2009 10:48 AM
Rob,
Actually, I think wandering through cemeteries, gazing at tombstones, reading what people have written to their loved ones through the ages and into death is a wonderful way to think about death. It is usually avidly avoided and sanitized and stripped of all reality. In a cemetery, there it is. Bam. Life, death, loss, love, pain.
I'm a little biased right now. We just buried my grandmother on Saturday in her favorite cemetery, right between her husband and her son.
Greenwood is an amazing place for peace and reflection. Go!
Posted by: Nokilissa at February 26, 2009 10:50 AM

Père Lachaise in Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations in that city and perhaps the most well known cemetery in the world. I don't feel it's disrespectful to go there and view the grounds and tombstones. It was a thrill for me to visit the resting sites of Edith Piaf, Chopin, and many other fascinating individuals, including one of my idols, Oscar Wilde.

Woodlawn in the Bronx is quite beautiful and has many celebs buried there too.
Posted by: bxgrl at February 26, 2009 10:56 AM
Rob, you are such a child sometimes.
I suggest you research the history of Greenwood and then go visit.
I go to cemeteries often; it's not out of disrespect, but out of respect. It's very tranquil and peaceful.
Greenwood was founded in the late 1830’s. In the 1850’s, New Yorker’s flocked to it as a tourist destination and it was used for picnicking by the masses. There weren’t any public parks then!
Greenwood promotes tours!
Geez, I’m not saying go run amok in there and act like an idiot. I’m saying go enjoy looking at some great architecture, enjoy the peaceful outdoors and maybe reflect on life a bit.
If you’re into architectural styles, the mausoleums and headstones will impress you. You can find all styles here. Use the main entrance on 5th Avenue. The gates are beautiful and in the Gothic Revival Style.
I guess someone should tell Arlington Cemetery not to let in the ‘tourists’.

Yes, woodlawn is also gorgeous.
Hubby and I were in Staten Island once and came across a cemetery. We went in and it was what you saw in scary movies, with the overgrown grass and headstones knocked over. It was quite sad, but yet it was surreal. I wish I remembered the name of it, so I can go back. It was a small cemetery....anyone?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 11:09 AM
Supposedly for a time Greenwood was the second most popular tourist destination in New York, Niagara Falls being the most popular. My father was a funeral director and sadly most cemeteries get visited only by relatives or the parks department.
Posted by: infinitejester at February 26, 2009 11:10 AM
Biff,
I don't live in Brooklyn Heights any more, and I never ever went out drinking on Atlantic Avenue. I guess it's because I always worked in Manhattan and on the rare occasion that I went to a bar, I did so after work in that other Boro.
Posted by: sam at February 26, 2009 11:10 AM
Widen your horizons, sam.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 11:11 AM
Noki;
Sorry to hear about your loss.
Re: Greenwood. As the Brooklyn Historical Society points out in their great book of photos "Old Brooklyn": in Victorian times, cemeteries were considered to be like a park, and were often a place where people would stroll on a Sunday. Greenwood was built with this function in mind. In the BHS' book, they have photos of folks strolling around in Greenwood.
Posted by: benson at February 26, 2009 11:13 AM
FYI - Greenwood is one of the more expensive cemeteries in NYC for plots.
When I heard the price, I nearly died.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 11:25 AM
Nolilissa, my condolences as well.
In Victorian times, life was short anyway. People had a lot of kids because they knew many of them would not make it to adulthood, this went for rich and poor alike. If you made it to 60, you were fortunate, there were many fewer truly old people. Plus, birth and death were all around. You gave birth at home, you died at home, and were laid out in the living room. So a peaceful, beautifully landscaped cemetary was not seen as gruesome or morbid. If heaven is a garden where departed loved ones could be met, places like Green-Wood and Woodlawn were as close as could be approximated. Read some mid 19th century poetry. Tombs, death and departed loves were the topics of all the major poets and writers, from Poe to Tennyson, Byron, etc. It's rather fascinating.
I've never been to Green-Wood, but it's been on my list for a long time. Anytime any wants to do a field trip....I used to live near Woodlawn Cemetary in the Bronx. It is also full of fascinating monuments and mauseleums with beautiful stained glass and carvings, drooping angels and huge monuments to the rich and famous. It's also very peaceful, and a great walking tour of art and history.

MM, you should go in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Take sainted tenant and make her dust the paths before you walk on them.
Hubby and I go quite often, it's a 5 minute car ride away for us, and if we're not doing anything and just want to go sit somewhere and enjoy the outdoors, we go there.
If you want to go, let me know and we'll set a date. I can get 6 adults comfortably in my jalopy, anyone else?

I think you hit the nail on the head.

You'll be in a bar on Atlantic Ave, it just might turn into a sex club and you can probably get to Bangkok.
So, do come.

There's 3 more seats in the jalopy, DIBS. One can be yours.
I'm assuming where MM goes, sainted tenant follows (you know to wipe up the crumbs from the picnic lunch).
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 11:49 AM
MM,
When I was researching the history of my home I found a good portion of it through obituaries in the NY Times.
The original owner of my house was a woman (how progressive!) who brought her father in to live with her once her mother passed away (they had lived in the neighborhood). Her father lived here for 7 years before dying in my home at age 91 (1916). His services were held in this house.
The owner of my home was a remarkable very liberal woman who besides being a full time journalist for a prominent newspaper, a musician, was one of the founders of several prominent Jersey City Clubs dedicated to woman's health and literacy and was active in The State Federation. Two of the organizations she help found are still in active existence today. She passed away in 1947 at age 88 her services were held in a funeral home (a large Victorian) one block over which is now a private residence.
Myself, I'd prefer not to be laid out. Just quietly cremated and scattered.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 26, 2009 11:50 AM
THL...you gotta be laid out first though before cremated. Ever heard of an Irish wake???? Everyone's will should leave an allowance of money for a big bash upon their death.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 11:55 AM
Sorry, I don't know the proper terminology. What I think I mean is, no viewing (wake?).
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 26, 2009 11:59 AM
Mopar, I am sooo sorry. I didn't mean to ignore your post addressed to me.
It would be awful if there was extensive termite damage. Is the house a frame?
Can you find out the extent of termite damage before going through with the sale? And I don't know how that could be down without opening walls. Is there a way?
Good luck, and I look forward to reading your renovation blog.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 26, 2009 12:12 PM
THL, that's really interesting. I think a house's history is a fun thing to know, and can often help explain why certain things in the house are so, as well as foster that sense of connection to the past, and stewardship of the property into the future. These old houses last so much longer than we do.
Mopar, I'm glad you are taking the plunge (depending on 2nd inspection, of course.)Looking forward to your reno blog, too, or at least lots of pix, before and after. Good luck!

I think thats very important in a city like NYC where so many of us have no history in the city beyond our own presence here. I certainly relish researching the history of the hoods and houses I've lived in in NYC, and I definitely see them in a different light aftewards. I think its even more important for people coming from countries aged enough that the US seems as though it barely has any written history. Helps set the record straight.

It's very hard to fight a war and give Banks Bailout money Biff. Please go back to my predictions and read them again. America will continue to waste money until the Bond Market says "No Mas". Very soon our borrowing costs will do a moonshot and it will be game over for the Obama Pixie Dust Up! At that time some hard choice will have to be made like Welfare, Medicaid, Corporate Welfare and other subsidies. I think we are in a world of hurt Biff and one more thing.

Biff;
BTW, mark my words on this: just like Obama has already jettisoned his campaign promises regarding NAFTA, he will do a slow climb-down from his words on Iraq. He knows full well that if we leave, it will create a huge vacuum in this politically volatile area. You think $4/gallon was high for gas? That would be nothing compared to what can happen if Iran were to move into Iraq. I'll wager anybody that we will still be in Iraq 4 years from now, with at least 50,000 troops, just as we had to stick around in Germany and Japan for quite a long time.
Posted by: benson at February 26, 2009 2:33 PM
BRG...I've never denegrated Bay ridge. How dare you refer to it as bedsty.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 2:33 PM
What, that is my exact point. I agree with you. How on earth can Obama (whom I supported fully during his campaign and continue to support) hope to give out all this bailout money and STILL allocate hundreds of billions of dollars towards the Iraq catastrophe? Any money spent at this point should strictly be helping the families of the 100,000+ innocent civilians who lost their lives. Other than that, we need to get out of there.
As for your other point, wow, I never thought I would see the day I would get a compliment from you, but I sincerely am glad that we've been able to have more constructive discussions than the crap we used to throw out at each other. It was just too much negative energy to deal with. And I do give you credit for predicting things (i.e., economic collapse) that most others didn't believe or want to hear which ultimately came to fruition. I just wish your delivery was a bit less aggressive, but on the other hand, if nothing else, it has gotten you noticed. And admittedly I've flown off the handle at people way more than I should have.
As for the gentrification thing; I think I've come to understand your perspective a bit better recently. I wasn't in Brooklyn in the '70s (or 80s or 90s) and I can't comment on how things were so I have to respect your opinion and opinions of others who grew up here and knew what things were like before us newbies arrived. You seem to have had a much different upbringing than me and I would suspect things weren't easy for you. But I just don't completely get your issue with someone like DIBS, who seems to have moved into a neighborhood he loves, is trying to improve it and didn't do it for the intention of flipping his place to make a profit. I'm assuming whomever he bought his place from sold it to him willingly (and made a tidy profit in the process - as I'm posting this I just saw that he noted he bought his place from a white family). Further, weren't a lot of people (of all colors) living in SoHo, the East Village and other traditionally areas in Manhattan priced out of those neighborhoods? I guess I could argue I was priced out of the Upper East Side because I couldn't buy the same kind of place there that I have now (of course that's a stretch as I didn't HAVE to leave there).
Anyway, I don't want to disrupt the lovefest and I really do appreciate what you said. Be well also.

Biff;
I have to say that I'm disappointed in your response to the What. I'm all for civility - that is fine. However, the man does not deserve legitimacy, for several reasons:
-he is basically advocating some type of new segregation based upon a combination of nativism, color and economic status.
-he has no respect for the views of others. Did you see his recent posts to Montrose? Vile and disgusting.
-why does his opinion have some type of legitimacy, because the world he grew up in is vanishing? This is the US, where we believe in social mobility. Furthermore, in a dynamic city like NY, this is to be expected. I grew up in an area (Gravesend) that slowly morphed from the one I knew to another of primarily Asian and Russian immigrants. We all would like to see our "hometown" stay the same, if for nothing more than sentiment. So what??? Does that give me the right to hate on Chinese folks, to call them all types of vulgar names, to hope that they lose their shirts?
-anybody on this site who would argue that we should put a baseball bat to the head of people who are changing the color or religion of a neighborhood would be hounded off. Likewise if someone complained about lower-income folks moving into a neighborhood and changing its character. Why, therefore, is it OK for someone to argue that if wealthier folks are changing the character of a neighborhood, it's Ok to take a basball bat or bocce ball to their head?

benson, it's possible nobody (with the exception of DIBS) has had more unpleasant words exchanged with The What than I have. But I decided to look past our fights, which were nothing more than ridiculous insults and threats exchanged on a daily basis with no substance behind them and listen to what he was saying and try to state my case. Since then, we have been civil with each other.
But to your points.
Regarding segregation - I am trying to put myself into the shoes of someone who grew up, likely less advantaged than me, as an African American at a time when they were treated even more as second class citizens than they are now. He has an insight that I don't and I am respecting his opinion on how things were since I wasn't here at the time. Having said that, my lengthy post above does state that I don't find it entirely fair to question people who buy into neighborhoods out of a love for the house and the area and without the intention of trying to make a quick profit out of it. I'm talking about those who truly want to make an investment in their neighborhood and deal with all the good and bad that comes with it. I also referenced changing neighborhoods and how people of many different backgrounds have been priced out of them by newcomers.
Regarding his views of others, specifically those like Montrose and wasder. I specifically mentioned that I would like him to back off of her. I think he has unfairly attacked her, but I hope with civility and reason he can see that. And you know what? When cobblehiller was interacting with him, I held it against her. I thought she should be attacking him like I did. But then I realized I had the problem, not her. I'm trying the approach of giving respect to get respect. And What has shown that he can respond non-violently when spoken to. Perhaps he has a lot of misplaced anger and maybe it's justified. I'm trying to understand where he's coming from and hear what he's saying. I clearly asked him to back off with the bocce balls and other such talk, but it's a blog and ultimately he can say what he wants (and DIBS has shown he can competently defend himself).
You can disagree with my approach and I will understand that.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 26, 2009 3:18 PM
Benson--the only I will say in response to your post to Biff is that What is going to be here whether you or I want him here or not. I would much rather have Biff and What talking like that then previous modes of (non)communication. That being said, I agree with most of what you wrote there. it is never OK to threaten another person or to suggest that a person's skin color makes them ineligible to live in whatever neighborhood that they want to. I do believe that What's threatened violence is rhetorical in nature, but I agree that his world view is intolerably intolerant.

"ENY - what do you write?"
When I was younger, I wrote for the Brooklyn Heights Press. I've worked as a news reporter for the N.Y. Post (which I now boycott). I've written magazine articles about jazz, Negro League baseball and the travel industry. I've also been a reporter for trade magazines covering the retailing and travel industries. I'm a PR guy now, and mainly write press releases, speeches, etc. for clients of my firm and for a few of my own clients (outside work). I also write for myself, and have been working on a book (on Negro League baseball) for a while now.

What...you can't have it both ways. You can't, in the same post, be civil to Biff and then start that neighborhood ghetto team racist crap that benson has correctly pointed out.
Until you clean up your act and stop with that shit altogether then no one is going to treat you like a human being.
Your threats of violence will get you banned from here at the least and, if that's your general daily demeanor in the real world will get you back in prison again. Are you about to run up against the third strike. God, that'd be too bad!!!
Get it????

ENY;
My wife's uncle was a super, super avid baseball fan. His name (Mike Stagno) is cited in the baseball encyclopedia because he was able to resurrect alot of statistics for the old Negro Leagues (I'm not sure how he did it).
The guy lived and slept baseball, to the point of ignoring his family.

"I would much rather have Biff and What talking like that then previous modes of (non)communication."
wasder, I know you understand what I'm doing as you've tried to do it as well. I got to the point where I started to ask myself why I was spending so much time spewing crap back and forth at an online nemesis when I could be using that time to try to learn something. The starting point was to calm my own rhetoric down. After that, hopefully more civilized discourse would ensue and we could begin to understand what the problems are.
It's easy to view The What as intolerant and the threatened violence doesn't help one's perception of him and it's often over the top. But maybe I would be equally as intolerant and angry if I grew up under the same circumstances. Who knows?

rob...if he was your first, you may get past it but you will never, ever forget him and truly be over it. All men, both gay and straight find it harder to deal when they know their ex has started dating someone else. You have to move on, get out there and meet other people. I don't know what else to say. I'm 53 and have a number of ex's and I still miss each and every one of them despite it usually being me who did the dumping.

No worries, BRG. Thanks everyone for the good wishes.
What, you frequently pick fights with people who agree with you and side with those who are despicable. You are a sore winner. Whatever your skin color, you are like Archie Bunker. Reactionary and nostalgic. I guess Montrose had you pegged right away, but you don't get her at all. Of course you are also funny and right about a lot of things.

Biff--Obviously I hear you. Its a fine line always between trying to hear somebody (really hear them) and accepting what should be intolerable language sometimes (as Benson has pointed out). And yet, to me the opposite is more intolerable. I try to have standards that cause me to speak out that are clear and unequivocal, but sometimes I feel like it all gets very blurry.

Biff and Wasder;
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember The What ever talking about the circumstances under which he grew up. I think there is alot of presumption here. Are we simply going to give the guy a pass because of his race?
I'm not advocating continuing hostility with the guy. I'm advocating that he simply be ignored by all until he cleans up his act and learns the meaning of mutual respect.

My sympathies, Rob. Don't worry, everyone gets dumped, you will find another and better, really and truly. You have to kind of convince yourself you don't care about this guy. Maybe pretend to yourself to think the very worst of him, at least temporarily.
Why does he have to move so close? Then you'll always be thinking of him in case you run into him on the street. That's no fun.

I'm with Benson on this one.
The people who engage him enjoy the back and forth. They love baiting each other and then crying foul. It's a big game.
We all know that this pacified version is only temporary. The bickering is the basis symbiotic relationship.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 26, 2009 3:51 PM

"East New York I need a PR guy, LMMFAO!"
I would LOVE to be a PR guy for you, What, and I am being completely honest. We PR types thrive on challenges and like unusual clients the best, because they are the easiest to promote. I'd have a ball representing you. However, as I told Iron Balls yesterday, good PR does NOT come cheap (which is why I got into it)!

Dave exemplifies graciousness today.
Posted by: mopar at February 26, 2009 3:57 PM
Wasder, nobody has been more patient with people here than you. In fact, I've often thought you've given certain posters way too much benefit of the doubt and chances to engage in meaningful discussions. I could tell the other day you were getting irked by BHO and I was hoping you would just let it go and walk away, but your postings today indicated it has gotten to you and I wish it hadn't. But you're the bigger man for trying to have a courteous debate. I'm ambivalent about being civil with someone who I feel is not civil to others, but at this point, I'll do what works for me and hope that I can convince others that it's the better way and the nastiness ebbs.
Benson, he's cleaned up his act where I am concerned. DIBS doesn't seem to mind the heated exchanges with What so I leave that alone. But again, I've asked, if nothing else, for the What to at least not attack Montrose, not that she cannot defend herself a hell of a lot more effectively than I can. I'm choosing not to ignore him at the end of the day because I find I am benefitting from reading some of the more informative things he's saying, whether it's to do with his take on the economy or Brooklyn "back in the day", etc. Again, that's just me. I can appreciate how you might wonder how and why I'm doing this as I have had that reaction with cobblehiller and wasder in the past.
THL, I don't mind engaging him but don't love the baiting. However, I'm sure your statement does apply to others. And maybe it is just temporary, but it's been a nice change.

"he was able to resurrect alot of statistics for the old Negro Leagues (I'm not sure how he did it)."
That's very interesting, Benson. The Negro Leagues are a fascinating story in general, and the history is scattered among folks like your wife's uncle. There are lots of "hidden" collectors with great memorabilia all around the country.
"ENY - Did you travel alot when you were writing for the trade magazines?"
Yes, very often, 2-3 times per month. It became quite grueling, really, and after more than 10 years of it, I went into PR mainly to make more money and get off the road. From hack to flack. I traveled the world to find out I'm a basically simple guy who most enjoys hanging around his house playing with his dog. Go figure.

ENY, I can't agree with you more. I've travelled to Asia so many times over the past 21 years that I've gotten tired of it. Despite friends there and the attractions it carries during "down time" from work I'd rather stay home and eat at my favorite haunts and watch TV.

I meant to say...
The bickering is the basis of their symbiotic relationship.
You'll quickly bore of each other without the rants. Before I knew better I was genuinely concerned for him because of the levels of disdain and bitterness he had. I also didn't understand why he kept coming back to this "asshat" filled website. Nor did I get that his vitriolic rants were just a performance.
Now I know better. I understand it's all just a big show. He runs around yelling at everyone in order to get people to engage him. He loves Dave, why because Dave gives him a fight. He claims to hate MM, why? because it'll piss people off and then they'll engage him in arguments.
Oh, o.k., I'll yell at him because he's a jerk. Nope, that doesn't work I'll be nice to him. Nope, that doesn't work either. O.k., I'll stroke his ego and tell him he's got some good points/predictions. Oh look, he acted civil for a minute.
PUH-LEEZ, why bother with it at all?

I hear you about the traveling. I was working on a TV show that required me to travel, and I would be gone for 2 weeks and back in NYC for one. I was so tired of it. I'd come home unpack, do laundry and pack again. All that traveling to exotic locations burns you out.

You do realize the correct answer to the question "Who is buried in Grant's Tomb" is: "nobody", as it is not a tomb, and therefore no one is buried there.
Here is a piece of trivia: Gravesend is unique in that it was the only part of NY that was originally founded as an English colony, at the time of New Amsterdam. Moreover, it is unique in that it was a colony started by a woman - Lady Deborah Moody - who fled England to seek religious freedom. Her original house still stands next to Gravesend cemetery - the oldest cemetery in NYC.

I'm kind of stuck. Because of globalization, there aren't many well-paying positions left in my area (fiber optics) on the east coast. Man, I wish I could stop travelling, but it's not going to happen soon.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:08 PM
Menudo guys were HOT.
When rob started posting about fiberoptics I thought he was going to mention lightsticks that guys use when they dance on top of the platforms at gay bars with their shirts off. Las time I danced with my shirt off lightsticks hadn't been invented.

Benson, get a straw hat!
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 5:09 PM
BRG, can you hold a tune? Or does your tune holding require a bucket with sturdy handles? LOL! Kidding, kidding!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:10 PM
Straw hat. The image I always get is the ending of Silence of the Lambs when Hannible is in some banana republic and Dr. Chilton has just landed on the airstrip and Hannibal says "I'm meeting an old friend for dinner."
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:11 PM
dave:
what do they do with the lightsticks? I mean how do they dance with them?
never mind...
Posted by: sam at February 26, 2009 5:12 PM
i think you mean glowsticks. do gay men seriously still dance with those? actually nevermind a friend of a friend of mine brought some to hand out once. recently this way. that's embarrassing. i never really talked to them again. i do however have a ton of glow bracelets! same thing except you put them around your wrists. much less tacky in my opinion (technically they can be used as cockringz if that's your sort of thing!). ill bring them on the 19th lol

Back in grade school my best friend had a Menudo poster where they were all shirtless and wearing big swim trunks in a pool. On one of them, it appeared as though the tip of his lap taffy was peeking out! That issue of BOP was hence coveted by all the boy-crazy girls. So sad. So sad.

"Regarding his views of others, specifically those like Montrose and wasder. I specifically mentioned that I would like him to back off of her. I think he has unfairly attacked her, - " Awwww, Biff! (sniffle.) I'm sincerely touched.
ENY, I'm looking forward to meeting you. I hope you come to the next get together. My uncle is a Negro League buff. I bet you two could chat for hours.
Dave, you hold your own very well, my friend.
Rob, they have a potter's field. It's not where you would want to be, if you had a choice.
This is a really interesting thread, all in all. Wow.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 26, 2009 5:13 PM
glowsticks, right, not lightsticks...same thing though. sam they just dance with them in the rather dark dancefloor of the bar.
rob has added some additional color to the subject ^^^^^^^
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:15 PM
rob, I wouldn't know. I haven't been in a gay dance club in probably 10 years, serious. (Except in bangkok and Hong Kong)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:16 PM
"lap taffy" In all my years I've never heard that one. Now I'm thinking about the Salt Water taffy shops in P-Town.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:18 PM
Snappy, I was just a lit'lin'. In fact, my dad took me (what a guy!).
My tastes are super eclectic now but I'd rather buy my new backsplash tiles than a concert tickets!
Speaking of, I gotta go downstairs to my old ugly ones and prep my roast.
Have fun, play nice!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 26, 2009 5:18 PM
me neither actually. i absolutely cannot be around that many gay guys at one time. im not sure why. i dont think it's cuz im self-hating or anything. i think i much prefer sexual diversity. ok time for me to go home.

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 26, 2009 5:19 PM

Rob, o.k...now I really can't breathe~~!!
Hysterical, I gotta go...

Killing me.

THL, that's a helluva dad to accompany a young girl to a Menudo concert! Hats off to him!
DIBS, don't equate it to salt water taffy! Now I'll never be able to enjoy it again! AAAAAHHHHHH
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:22 PM
"Prep my roast" for some "lap taffy"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:23 PM
Snappy...do you go to P-Town???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:24 PM
"Prep my roast for some lap taffy!!"
Brilliant. Bravo THL.

**Bowing** Thank you, thank you, I have many more. I'll try to pepper them in to the convos in the coming weeks :) (do I get a crown and a sash???)
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:25 PM
Never been there DIBS
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:25 PM
Never went to too many rock/pop concerts, but my all time faves were Earth, Wind and Fire, around 1976, Chicago around the same time, and Al Jarreau in the 90's. All very different, but fun. I go to a fair number of classical music concerts and operas now, as well as jazz. I haven't been to anything in a while though.
The best of those concerts have something in common - when you are in the groove, believing in your music, and just out there with no other objective than to communicate with your audience, it's magic. On both sides of the stage.

What's P-Town?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 26, 2009 5:28 PM
"I'm kind of stuck."
Yeah, Benson I was afraid of that happening to me....I know some travel writers who are in that boat. That's another reason I got out.

Provincetown, MA The place where the Pilgrims landed first actually. Mostly Portugese settled. Became a big hippy place in the 60s and is now largely gay & lesbian now along with the Portugese locals. There are definite stroller issues there with the increasingly large numbers of gay & lesbian families.
It's a beauriful part of Cape Cod at the very tip.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:31 PM
I've had lots of that sam. Too uch probably. Someday we'll have the discussion about "miles of pole"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:32 PM
I think I've got you all beat - my parents took us to a Jackson Five concert in Madison Square Garden in the 1970s. I also saw Chaka Kahn and Wild Cherry at the Westchester Premiere Theater, the Talking Heads at Forest Hills Tennis Center, and Public Enemy at a now-defunct downtown club called "The World."
Posted by: East New York at February 26, 2009 5:33 PM
Ok...outta here. Anyone want to meet at Japas 38 for Karaoke? 38th street bet Madison & 5th
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 26, 2009 5:35 PM
I LOVE Public Enemy. As far as I'm concerned, when they stopped writing, the quality of 'real' rap music declined severely.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 26, 2009 5:36 PM
I can't picture DIBS doing karaoke.

"This makes sand." -- Gertrude Stein.
Doesn't have the same ring as "Prep my roast for some lap taffy."

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember The What ever talking about the circumstances under which he grew up. I think there is alot of presumption here. Are we simply going to give the guy a pass because of his race?"
Benson--you are correct about this. There is plenty of assumption going on about What's background. Whatever I know about it comes from his anecdotal info in re Clinton Hill--going to PS 56, Fulton St in the 80's etc. So I feel like I have a sort of grasp. But your point is well taken.

Just got back from a verrrrrry long day and checked back on the ol' thread. I have to say I was feeling the love! Thank you to everyone for your thoughts. And yes, Waz, she's in a truly lovely spot.
