you all will be proud of me. i finally ventured out of my apartment this weekend and explored prospect park! miraculously avoiding any kind of contact with horses. i went with a friend and we loaded up our flasks and lunchboxes and went to the lake and watched the ducks.

Did you take my advice and bet Slumdog Millionnaire in your Oscar pool??? You owe me and I'll be coming 'round on horseback to pick it up!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 9:34 AM
i didnt wind up joining in on the betting pool. when i saw how many questions and categories there were i was like oh hells to the no. i had no clue who any of the people or the movies even were for the most part. we do have a biggest loser aspect of the game, so the person who gets the lowest score gets their 5 dollars plus 5 dollars. but i probably wouldnt even win that. damn that reminds me i had a horrible nightmare this weekend that i got like a 30 something out of 100 on a high school english paper and i got into a fight with my english teacher! (my least fav. one from high school). i loved almost all my teachers, but what was it with english and lit teachers. they were always terrible and annoying. history teachers were pretty much at the bottom of the barrell as well personality-wise. i adored all my science and math teachers tho.

No Oscar talk this morning?
I was working and watching with one eye. I find award shows sooo boring.
I like when someone (I forget who), while giving his thanks, said "While growing up in a suburb of Florida..."
Huh.....I thought all of Florida was a suburb of NYC?!?!?
I also wanted to throw up when Heath Ledger won best supporting actor. I won't repeat the comments I made.
I liked when Slumdog won Best Picture - half of Bombay was on stage.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 11:16 AM
award shows are definite snoozers. im not a big fan of actors and actresses anyway. i dont like seeing actors on television. i dont believe in scripts and phoney-ness. reality tv is so much better. tv should be a medium that we as a people should be allowed to go on if we choose. not a select group of dullards who do nothing but memorize stupid lines and get botox. im also not a fan of scripted movies really either.

The Oscars show was awful but the awards for the most part seemed to go to the most deserving. Other than Alan Arkin screwing up Philip Seymour Hoffman's name and the shot of Angelina Jolie while Jennifer Anistan was speaking, it was a snoozefest.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 23, 2009 11:24 AM
No Oscar talk from me. I also find awards shows to be tedious.
Wait, OK, I admit I watched the Soup Awards.
They have the best categories, for example: "Best Display of Honoeroticism By A Guy Who Is Totally Not Gay... Seriously... Come On You Guys... I Mean It."

Did anyone have wind damage or downed branches from last night's high winds? I nearly jumped out of my skin (and bed) when something metal when skidding across the roof!
Posted by: BrooklynGreene at February 23, 2009 11:29 AM
I was dying over the emerald earring and ring suite the St. Angelina was wearing STUNNING. Hmmm, I wonder if I'll get them for my birthday.
My pick for best dressed is Kate Winslet.
Love Ben Stiller doing the Joaquin Phoenix stint. Great.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 11:32 AM
Yeah, I thought that was great, when they cut to Angelina Jolie While Anistan was on stage. Of all the people to put the camera on.
Am I the only one that HATED what Frida Pinto was wearing and her hair and makeup?
Rob, if you think there's no scripts in reality TV, you are very naive. It's not necessarily a script, but 'words' are suggested to these 'regular' people on the reality shows.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 11:33 AM
THL--I thought Kate Winslet looked frumpy and I never think she looks frumpy.
Posted by: wasder at February 23, 2009 11:36 AM
oh i know reality tv follows certain scripts for story arcs and stuff and to mess with the outcomes, im fine with that.

As soon as Jen walked out I said to Mr. TH, "wait for the cut to brad and Angie" and then boom, there it was, kinda tacky and predictable. Here's the pic of those earrings (to die for)
http://www.themakeupgirl.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/angelina.jpg
I wasn't LOVING Frida's hair and dress. I wasn't loathing it either. It was just kinda dull. Made her look too old.
http://media.kansascity.com/smedia/2009/02/22/18/freida.standalone.prod_affiliate.81.JPG
What did you think about Marisa Tomei's gown? I thought it was gorgeous. Someone on another blog joked that it was made from "Letter Sized Envelopes" which I though was hilarious but I still loved the dress.
http://media.kansascity.com/smedia/2009/02/22/18/tomei.standalone.prod_affiliate.81.JPG
Worst dress? for me Beyonce. Did you see her attempts at walking? She couldn't move in it.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 11:44 AM
THL - I thought Tomei's gown was gorgeous. I also liked Taraja(sp?)Henson's gown.
There was another dress I really liked, forget who wore it, but it was a red or fushia column, strapless w/ an assymetrical bodice.
Yes, Beyonce's was awful.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 11:56 AM
If money were no object and nor were looks (yours, LOL) which actor or actress would you like to sleep with????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 11:57 AM
BRG--Amy Adams in red?
I loved those earrings on Angie too.
Posted by: wasder at February 23, 2009 12:00 PM
I think that Angelina's earrings are too green and too clear to be natural emeralds. I think they are faux. Real emeralds don't look like that, although -who knows?
I liked Penelope's Cruise dress, Balmain, from the 1950's.
I also liked Angelina's dress, showed off her incredible figure. Heidi Klum's outfit looked like it ripped apart while she was getting out of the limo.
The worst dress of the evening was not Beyonce's it was Sophia Loren's.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:00 PM
Daniel Craig
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 12:01 PM
No not Amy Adams...although I thought she looked good.
Let me try to find it.
I also thought Meyrl Streep looked very elegant.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 12:03 PM
Rob, you are totally missing the storyteller's art, and the ability of film to show us the best and worst of humanity. I've been tremendously and unforgettibly moved by stories of love, sacrifice, honor and courage, as well as repelled by greed, hate, envy and jealousy. A good movie takes us to places we'll never go, or places that never were, or will not be again. There are movies that have changed lives, or inspired people to great things. There are movies that have just been fun, funny and entertaining. It's so much more than botoxed actors speaking stupid lines, or Hollywood hype. Watching an actor create unforgettable characters is appreciating good writing, direction, and all of the art of moviemaking, as well as seeing some incredible talent.
Because I've been involved in various, admitedly minor, forms of the theatrical arts on both sides of the boards and camera, I really appreciate film and theatre for the skills and tremendous talents involved, and nothing beats the comraderie of the creative process, and the personal satisfaction of a project well done.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 23, 2009 12:05 PM
Cuba Gooding was very funny, and I nearly fell out of the chair laughing when Ben Stiller came out.
Daniel Craig- yep. But I've always had a thing for Anthony Hopkins (older man thing goin' on here).
Thought Natalie Portman looked so beautiful in that pink dress, hated the Tomei dress. Reminded of those awful artichoke dresses of the 80's
Posted by: bxgrl at February 23, 2009 12:09 PM
Sarah Jessica Parker looked like the good witch Glinda from the Wizard of Oz. Too poofy. and the bodice looked painful.
Hugh Jackman wins mny vote as sexiest although I liked the way Robert Downey looked, so thin and fresh-faced, one would never know he's been through the ringer.
Beyonce was in good voice, but I think she may be a little too ubiqutous.
Oh, and I just remembered who really had the worst dress, Whoopie Goldberg. What was she thinking?
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:10 PM
They were real if you looked closely at them they had jardin (french for garden) which is the common industry term for the inclusions that, in emeralds, are common and do not affect value. Looking for jardin is a pretty surefire indicator of a natural stone. They were museum quality and most likely on loan from a jewelers private collection.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 12:10 PM
Agreed, Whoopi was wearing something we'd see on "Housewives of Mill Basin."
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 12:13 PM
I was looking for the jardin, but did not see it. That is why I suspected they were faux.
They must be the two of the largest matched bright green emeralds in the world. On loan from the Saudi royal family or some such.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:15 PM
You're right, Whoopie was BAD (but isn't she always?) Sophia was pretty bad too, her face is looking scary-town (Sophia, time to lay off the surgery and grow old gracefully!).
Amy Adam's looked good. Loved that necklace she was wearing too. Even with it being such a statement piece it didn't overwhelm the dress. Kudos to her stylist!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 12:20 PM
Who is Amy Adams? Agreed that she looked stunning in her Carolina Herrera and that Cartier over-the-top necklace.
I know a little about real estate, but dresses and jewels are two things I can really sink my teeth into.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:22 PM
Okay, I can't find the other dress I liked, I'm done searching for it.
It was a column strapless dress, very simple but the bodice instead of going straight across the top of the chest, it jarred to the left. It was either red or fuschia. I think some blond woman was wearing it.
Anyone?

Memo to Sophia Loren;
Sophia, please learn the meaning of the phrase: "quit when you are at the top of your game." At the least, please don't wear make-up that makes your skin look like a cheap tan job.
I was happy to see Slumdog win the accolades it deserves.
THL: I am totally missing Kate Winslett. What was with that hair? Also, was it just me, or did she appear to have a half-snear on her face half the night?
Posted by: benson at February 23, 2009 12:33 PM
True Dave, he seems like a sweetheart too. Not at all jaded yet.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 12:33 PM
Methinks Kate Winslet has been reading her own press clippings a bit too much.
Posted by: wasder at February 23, 2009 12:35 PM
Tina Fey was wearing a very flattering dress, but she had an unfortunate "Olive Oyl' style bun. Hair is hard to get right. Merryl Streep had her hair done well. Elegant but not weird.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:36 PM
THL - Ding, Ding Ding!!!
You win! That's the other dress I liked.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 12:39 PM
One more thing regarding Kate Winslett: I think it is really low class to lobby for your own award. Apparently she was talking herself up all over town, and at the same time, putting ole Meryl Streep down with the line that "she's already had her turn".
Memo to Kate: Kate, if you are as good as you think you are, you don't have to get Time magazine to put you on the cover and lobby that you should really win this time. Not classy at all. Your work will speak for itself, Oscar or no Oscar.
Posted by: benson at February 23, 2009 12:41 PM
The other thing that I think should be perfectly obvious to show business professionals (or their stylists)is that after the age of fifty or so, one really should not wear large ruffles or leopard prints. Ever.
One should however wear serious diamonds.
Preferably given to one by past lovers.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 12:45 PM
I loved Kate's hair! I thought it looked like a modern take on Grace Kelly. Also, Kate's always had that half sneer/smile. I think it's cute. I was thinking maybe it's a guy thing but, my husband also loved the way she looked.
http://www.eonline.com/photos/gallery.jsp?galleryUUID=04866ede-398f-4a31-b8cc-10cb26c15806#ea212164-b98b-4cd0-8ea7-626c4135deff
Oh well, to each his own.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 12:50 PM
Geez Benson...What gives? Did Kate Winslet say some negative comments about Fedders?
I didn't see the Reader. Did anyone here see it? I asked my buddy to get it for me.

"One should however wear serious diamonds.

Yeah, if only!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 12:54 PM
BRG;
No, she made negative comments about Meryl Streep, which is really not classy. On the other hand, Meryl took it all in stride with her usual elegance and class.
Posted by: benson at February 23, 2009 12:55 PM
When did she do that? It sounds very out of character for her to have done so. You sure it wasn't in jest?? My mom is British and sometimes her sarcastic and playful jab jokes get a bit lost in translation. I didn't hear it so I really don't know.
As far as talking herself up goes...Hollywood is a business. They are required to promote themselves and their movies. Particularly women, who's careers tend to have shorter a short shelf life then most leading men.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at February 23, 2009 1:04 PM
THL;
It was all over the place. For instance, Lou Lumenick in the NYP talks about it today.
She does come off (at least to me) as a bit of a sarcastic snob. As you state, perhaps something is lost in translation, but I'm not so sure. For instance, Kate Blanchett seems to me to be far more sophisticated, yet doesn't come off like a sarcastic snob.
No one doubts that folks need to talk themselves up - but that is what they have publicists for. There is some finessing the matter. Having Time magazine doing your bidding and putting down another actress in your whispering campaign is over-the-top, imho.
By the way, if the print media wonders why they are headed into oblivion, look no further than this latest issue of Time. They pretend that they want to be taken seriously as journalism, and at the same time they devote their cover page to touting an actress for an Oscar. Are they for real with this?
Posted by: benson at February 23, 2009 1:13 PM
I dunno, maybe she is.
Cate Blanchett- I totally agree with you there. She's a class act all the way! Love her.

I knew she was no good ever since she ditched that perfectly nice hedge fund manager on Titanic and slutted around with some guy from steerage. Honestly!
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 1:51 PM
I would have been down there with the guys in steerage as well.
I just told someone on an email my whole life story. But that's a different story.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 1:57 PM
Kate said something at the end of her speech about Meryl having to deal with losing the Oscar to her that was obviously a joke. Before that "Winslet said she had been convinced that rival Meryl Streep would win the best actress award for Doubt. "When you are in a category with Meryl Streep, you just don't expect anything good to happen to you, honestly," she said."

ok - my 2 cents:
I thought Kate Winslet looked horrid - hated her dress and hair - ugh although I do think she's usually gorgeous on the redcarpet, last night was a total miss for me
loved Nicold Kidman's dress, Taraji(sp)dress, Anne Hathaway,Tina Fey and Natalie Portman
HATED Jessica Biel's dress too - oy
ok and what was with that HORRIBLE mid-show broadway number with Jackman,Beyonce and the 2 friggn kids from High School Musical? - what a hot mess! -and speaking of messes - Beyonce totally lip-synched and looked SCARY on the redcarpet
Anglelina also looked gorgeous
Favorite moments - DEF ben Stiller and the whole James Franco/Seth Rogen bit as well
Posted by: gemini10 at February 23, 2009 2:06 PM
I always say I won't watch but I kept flipping back to it like I usually do. I used to have the biggest crush on Kate Winslet; anyone see "Jude"? Beyonce looked pretty smokin' too.

I hate to admit it, especially if Mr. B. sees this, but I've never been to the flea.
Would be afraid that some of the regulars would see me with some tarty boy toy in tow and then the next day there'd be all these bitchy comments about what we were wearing and what our hair looked like!!!!

dave: you wish!
As if we would be as interested in what you wore as we are in Kate Winslet and Angelina Jolie!
gemini: Was Nicole Kidman at the ceremony? I didn't see her or her dress.
Benson: I didn't watch the Baba Wawa interviews, did Kate say something mean about fellow diva Streep? That's what makes ratings y'know. I think Winslett is too much a pro, and a Brit, to say anything bitchy in public.
THL: Best dress was Cruz. Best emeralds: Jollie.
That's the bottom line from oscarville.
Oh, and I go to the flea all the time, that's how I found out about the blog, kind of the opposite of most of you I guess.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 2:27 PM
I hate flea markets.
Rob: for the record, I am not a fan of any Hollywood actor or actress. I like movies alot, but am not going to inject any energy into being a "fan". I find that most Hollywood types don't know when it is time to just do what they do - act - and leave it there. David Nivens once made one of the most elegant Oscar acceptance speeches when he said that he apologized for any time he may have been prone to the actor's disease and not known when the show was over, and it was time to get off the stage.
Posted by: benson at February 23, 2009 2:30 PM
McKenzie (and Biff);
Of course, Kate didn't say anything in public about Meryl - she's too smart about that. It was supposedly a whispering campaign to the effect that it was "her turn", and that Streep had had her day already.
Hey, I'm not trying to put down Kate - to each his own. I can't believe that I'm writing anything about this matter at all. As I just wrote to Rob, I tend not to take anything in Hollywood too seriously.

Does that come under "mild CBT?"
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 23, 2009 3:31 PM
While I'm not sure what consitutes "mild CBT", I'm pretty certain it has nothing to do with the vintage schoolyard game to which I was referring.
Posted by: Biff Champion at February 23, 2009 3:33 PM
I'll give you a clue...the "T" stands for torture and the other two are anatomically very closely related.
I always found schoolyard games so homoerotic. Maypole especially.

Didn't even realize the Oscars were on. Oops. Instead I busied myself going to the Open House in Crown Heights. The one that is listed by Brooklyn Properties for $699,000. Did anyone else go? My bf said someone else on the sign-in sheet said they heard of it through Brownstoner but I didn't look at the name.
So: Yes, it has all the original details. And pretty much everything about it needs to be fixed. The only place I've seen in worse condition is Admiral's Row.
Examples: Electricity needs upgrading from fuse box. Walls, ceilings, floors, windows need repair or replacement. Deep diagonal cracks and slanting of walls, doors, floors, and stairs on upper floors could indicate serious structural or foundational issues. Ground-floor kitchen gas line is outside the walls. Urine smell in ground floor shed and in back of top two floors. Top floor kitchen is located in what is essentially a closet with a skylight and could present a fire hazard.
The building is landmarked. The owner lives next door.
I'd be amazed if anyone was brave enough to take this on.
One of the agents said there had been roof leaks in the past, which caused part of the damage. It has a new roof.

All I can say is that tetherball was not played on the streets of Brooklyn when I was a kid. Here is a PARTIAL list of the games we did play, some of which are unique to the boro:
-stoop ball

rob....there are so many younger guys out there who like older guys...and for that i am grateful. The majority of them are just obsessed with older guys, it has nothing to do with a "sugar daddy" thing either.

i think it was before our time brg.. im sure most residents of brooklyn heights have fond memories of tetherball tho.

As kids, we played handball up against buildings.
Actually, hubby and I will still play handball, there are courts by us. I'm not very good anymore and Hubby will always end up hooking up with someone else and playing with them, while I sit on the bench clicking my glass pumps.

one of the few games i remember playing as a kid outdoors was me pretending to be one of the cats from that ridiculous musical cats from 80s hahha. who knows what that was about!

BRG;
Handball! How could I forget?! I used to play it too.
In fact, there was the handball one plays in the park (akin to paddle ball) and there was another "lighter" version for playing against buildings.
In the old Brooklyn days, hand ball was a serious game in the parks, dominated by Jewish folks. I rememember wondering into a park when I was a kid with my brothers, in the midst of a handball tournament, and was instantly told to leave the premises.

that's scary

Dave, Ok, now I know you're not kidding. what do you say to your protege when you become bored of them? It sounds like you like variety and novelty.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 4:31 PM
Benson, we used to play handball everyday, up against the Verizon building in our nabe.
Now, the game is dominated by Asians and Hubby will end up playing with them after he gets fustrated (which doesn't take long) with my sheer laziness; I just refuse to run after the ball.
Wii Sport anyone??
Hey, I can crash on the sofa at any moment during an activity.

most of them are interested in primarily a NSA relationship. A lot of these guys are also in a relationship that they want to stay in but the sex has gotten boring there for them. Its often like that. There is that occasional situation, I'm in one right now, where someone becomes quite attached but as long as they know the situation up front, no one is really geting deceived.

I just saw the ad on CNBC for "The Grand prospect Hall....We Make Your Dreams Come True" That always makes even a bad day enjoyable.

Mopar, are you talking about the house on Pacific Street?
Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 23, 2009 5:00 PM
"All I can say is that tetherball was not played on the streets of Brooklyn"
THETHERBALL??
ACTUAL classic Brooklyn (East New York circa 1970s) street games:
- Flies Up
- Running Bases
- Chinese handball
- Skelly
- Hot Peas and Butter
- Freeze tag
- Utah (played on a basketball court)
- Red Light Green Light
- Giant Steps
Posted by: East New York at February 23, 2009 5:28 PM
OMG...I don't know 3/4 of the games being mentioned.
I say next Brownstoner get together, forget standing around in a dingy bar sipping drinks, we should hang out on the streets of Brooklyn and play street games of yesteryear.
Stick ball anyone?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 5:43 PM
Yes, Montrose, the house on Pacific Street. I think it was 1418. Montrose, did you check it out? Know anything about it? Is it close to you?
Posted by: mopar at February 23, 2009 6:10 PM
I can only imagine what Utah might be, and a basketball court would not be necessary.
Posted by: mopar at February 23, 2009 6:16 PM
Just checked the old thread, and see you and Amzi are familiar with the house but hadn't stopped in. Did you see it this weekend? Also I see BRG was interested. Well, she wouldn't be if she saw the condition.
Posted by: mopar at February 23, 2009 6:26 PM
Mopar, I was interested. But truthfully, we're stopping our search for a house once again.
Damn economy!!
Also, We're not scared or turned off by any condition a house is in. We would just need a little corner of the house to live in while we renovate.
btw - what happened to the other house you were looking at? I was sure you were going into contract.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 23, 2009 6:59 PM
Dave, sorry to ask dumb questions. you seem like a popular and well-liked poster here, you must be a nice person. best wishes.
Posted by: mcKenzie at February 23, 2009 7:24 PM
BRG, I think you could do better than this place. The top two floors were in the worst condition I have ever seen. Whole floors, walls, ceilings and windows seemed to be rotting. (Just my unprofessional opinion.)
As for the other house, funny you should ask...we have been dithering since October. We are still not in contract. We are waiting for the seller to fax the amended contract back to to us so we can see what they've changed.
The house is beyond fabulous, we will never see another like it again. We are uncertain about the condition of the house and how much repairs will cost and the neighborhood in several respects, including convenience, safety, ease of finding a renter, and how much we will miss our current neighborhood. It's not that we think those things are bad. We just don't know.
The alternative is buying an ugly house with a bad floor plan in our current neighborhood. (That's all there is here.)
Or maybe triangulating and finding a compromise house in a compromise area, such as near the Myrtle Broadway JMZ.
We're almost at the point of tossing a coin. We can't decide. Or staying where we are, because it's less risky.
We're quite immobilized with indecision.

Mopar, I live 2 blocks away, but I don't know anything about it, other than where it is. I didn't realize there was an open house, and I've never been inside. Sounds disappointing.
