i was waiting for the open thread to start. so i get to work and there's the ny times and wall street journal on my desk and a little insert book from Corcoran called "the little book of BIG values!" i dont know why i open these inserts and books from them. they depress the hell out of me. everything is so beautiful and so expensive and i wind up flipping through the book in a masochistic way and get really REALLY down on myself thinking about being a man in his 30s who shares an apartment :-/ and wondering why am i such a masochist to visit blogs like this one and other real estate sites. it's funny cuz my friends are like um youre a freak why do you do that? and i have no answer. maybe fabulous real estate is just a giant soap opera for me.

I'd like to take a poll of what readers would like to see banned in the US at coops and anywhere else for political or humanitarian reasons. You don't necessarily have to have a valid reason, just any old one will do.

A few suggestions:

Japanese autos and electronics. Reason: Japanese officials are increasingly seen intoxicated in public and cheapen the high moral standing of G7 meetings.

German automoblies. Reason: Germans have started a lot of land wars in Europe over the ages.

Swiss cuckoo clocks and chocolates. Reason: UBS is going to divulge the names of 52,000 American clients who supposedly have Swiss bank accounts

Chinese anything. Reason: multitudes of reasons.

The NY Post- because newspapers should actually publish news, not make it up to suit themselves.

I'm in the dark about Adrian Grenier. Who is he and why is his name popping up on BS?

Posted by: likes2lurk at February 20, 2009 9:33 AM

I'd like to ban news coverage on anything that is supported by less than 0.1% of a co-op's members. Seriously, unless this proposal has legs, it seems silly to blow it up. Front Page: 10 People in Park Slope Take an Absurd Yet Heartfelt Political Position. Dog Bites man, page 2. Seriously, why is it a three day news story whenever someone sneezes or rearranges the child care schedules at that place.

Posted by: slopefarm at February 20, 2009 9:34 AM

slopefarm...its interesting because it is so ridiculous. In these hard economic times, we need bits of entertaining frivolity like this. Similarly....

"...fulton mall is a stretch of old brooklyn department stores abandoned in the seventies and recolonized in the eighties and nineties by discount electronic stores, discount shoe stores, discount sneaker stores, discount hat stores, stores that sell discounted goods at a discount. there are podiatrists and dental clinics (we specialize in cowards) and places that sell inexpensive jewelry in the shape of fists, fingers, and jesus christ. on fulton street in some places, rents are higher than on madison avanue; fulton street is the third-highest dollar-volume retail district in new york city, with a hundred thousand shoppers a day, putting in, in terms of human activity, on par with fifth avenue, or, by association, the champs-elysees. studies show, however, that the residents of the gentrified neighborhoods that surround downtown brooklyn rarely go to downtown brooklyn. thus, the city and developers deem it "underutilized."" - A Windstorm in Downtown Brooklyn (was just reading this short story and this struck me as funny). ive never been there! must go!

Posted by: Troy McClure at February 20, 2009 9:44 AM

Rob, those are called "aspirational" publications . It's like reading Vogue Magazine or Elle Decor. The percentage of readers who can actually afford anything withing their covers is rather small, but their readership is quite high. It's real estate/fashion/decorating porn. You look at it, wish you could be in it, fantasize a bit, put it down and then go about your business. Don't worry about it.

Being addicted to this site is another issue altogether. Pure masochism.

ROB!!!!!! STOP.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 10:07 AM

rob- having lived over there and shopped on Fulton even efore the 70's I have to say there were always lots of stores and a bustling business. Just that except for a few of us, no white folk would go there. I loved Bridge St.- great fabric stores and ABC was the poverty-stricken's answer to target. i found some neat stuff there on many an occasion. Fulton St. was never abandoned- except by the white people in the gentrified surrounding neighborhoods. But overall, what the article is saying is basically true. Now the denizens of BH, CH and CG think it needs to "lifted up" to their standards. I think that's a slap in the face to all the business people and customers who made Fulton St. a great shopping district.

My own feeling is that those residents will still not go downtown- crossing Boerum is uncomfortable, sometimes terrifying, and my own feeling is that for those who love their quiet brownstone neighborhoods a big, heavily commercialized business district so close kinda of infringes on the genteel neighborhood fantasies they have. in all the years I lived in that area, I never saw a neighbor down there or even heard it mentioned as a place to shop, or eat (except for Juniors maybe).

now i have the song ManChild by Neneh Cherry stuck in my head...
thanks what!

Ok, youre on your own, its late
Your girlfriend is on another date with the hero in your dream
Turn around, ask yourself. so, you think youre gonna win this time manchild?

Is it the pain of the drinking
Or the sunday sinking feeling
The car never seems to work
When its late your girlfriends on a date
And the hero with her in your dream
In your sleep it seemed to like you
Turn around and ask yourself
Turn around ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state youre in

Could you go undercover
And sell your brand new lover (could you)
Be someone else for a night
Maybe someone else will love you
You sell your soul for a tacky song
Like the one you hear on the radio
Turn around ask yourself
Turn around and ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state youre in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, manchild, manchild

From monday down to friday
Youre working on another mans car
Or is it in the factory?
It doesnt matter where you are

Just turn around and ask yourself is this communication
Accentuate the positive and give some illustration
See manchild, youre no one, you turn the microphone on
Control communication when Im kickin it and so on
To the point that I need, the air that I breathe
Into an audience thats waiting and ecstatic to receive
For the meantime another mean rhyme, I keep on sayin it
I know what the time is the crowd will keep playing it
Through the speaker boxes louds my diagnosis
cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses.
Enough r-e-s-p-e and c-t
Respect yourself express no stress the mike is easy
Just believe that all you need is the air that you breathe.
Turn around ask yourself

Chorus:
Manchild, will you ever win
Manchild, look at the state youre in
Manchild, he will make you cry
Manchild, manchild, manchild
Hes the apple of your eye

Once bitten twice shy, why dont you bite me again
Just take it in the right and go tell your friend
Are you ready for the words I turn the microphone on
A figure of speech to reach you at the back and so on
The style Im stimulating dance floors
Raise your body temperature now and
This demands for power in the amp you know louds my diagnosis
cause I believe in miracles and words in heavy doses.

Gee, what- just imagine you have a child and you tell him that the PLO will give you 20,000 to strap on a bomb and get on an Israeli bus or walk into an Israeli store. Tell them you'll be so proud and they'll get a whole bunch of virgins in heaven. then send them out to play.

Or imagine that your leader had received millions and millions of dollars in aid for his people and that he has socked most of it away and now that he's dead his wife, living high on the hog in Paris, has that money while you live in squalor, with no roads, lousy schools and crumbling homes. that is unless you are willing to sacrifice a child for a 20,000 "martyr's" fee.

But please continue to grace us with the benefit of your in-depth knowledge and analysis of the situation in the Middle east.

Rob, Hmm, well, I realize his writing is 'fiction', but some of his 'memories' of the area don't quite jibe with mine. I just think he sensationalizes certain aspects. That said, I really enjoyed hearing him speak at St. Ann's Warehouse one evening a couple years ago.

Despite layoffs at the Death Star, the fridge in the kitchenette is more full than ever. It seems lots of people are trying to save money by brown bagging it these days. Yesterday was the second time I went to get some ice at the same time an East Indian colleague of mine was heating up the most delicious smelling food ever. I was considering running out to get a toasted peanut butter and banana sandwich so I could ask her if she would trade lunches like we used to do in the cafeteria in Grade 7. Anyone else noticing more people brown bagging it?

Ok, maybe you'll remember this What...it's been bugging me for years....who was the guy on late night radio - I don't know what station - he had a talk/call-in show. He'd talk about anything - politics, UFO's, music, old NY, news, anything. He had regular callers that he knew. He had to be a pretty old guy at that time. I doubt he's alive. I had a little transistor radio and I used to listen to it real quiet while I was falling asleep at night. I just can't ever remember his name. It was on about the same time as Alison Steele was on - cause I would flip the dial back and forth between them.

yeah ive been doing it too. tho i work in soho i rarely eat out at lunch anyway since it's so expensive. i used to go to wendys for the dollar chili (btw it's up to 169 now) and then a block to au bon pain for an asiago cheese bagel to dip into the chili that used to be 89 cents now it's 109 and 10x smaller. grrrr. but that is a cheap lunch.

honestly i always think it's ghetto when i see people bringing in leftovers from dinner for lunch. plus it's rude cuz it stinks up the microwave and office. no one wants to smell your nasty at home kitchen smells. we work in soho, go eat outside.

I've seen individuals brown bagging it whom I would never have believed would ever do so. It's probably helping people to eat healthier. Hmmm, given your login, I'm wondering if you also work here at the Death Star. Perhaps you were the one nuking the lunch yesterday that smelled so good!

NY Post issues apology over cartoon.

The entire article....

Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

What, I'm surprised at you. If you listened to WABC in my nabe you got an ass-whippin'! Cuz you were a true Asshat!

The righteous listened to WWRL and Frankie Crocker, which was all Black and all JB all the time!

In between was WMCA, home of the 'Good Guys' that included Harry Harrison before he left for WABC. More JB mixed in with the Beatles.

WABC was what the white kids listened to, all Beatles and Monkees along with the least offensive Motown. All in all tho, radio was less segregated back then than now, for sure.

In 1971 I was riding with two African American armed guards to make a bank drop and naturally they were listening to WWRL, when I first heard 'The Revolution Will not be Televised'. Blew me away.

You didn't hear that on ABC.

Later they got locked up for pulling a scam with the white night manager and putting the safe combos together to clean it out. Those were the days, What!

How about Hank Span on WWRL!!! Ok Denton and yes everyone around the way listen to WABC! My Father has a big-ass Radio which lasted about 23 years. I listened to WRVR, WBLS and who can forget WKTU (The original one!) but I loved WABC and 99x.

I remembered when Frankie Crocker went to jail. When he got out I think he work out of LA before coming back to WBLS in 1981.

Frankie Crocker was my mother's best friend's son. I met him a couple of times, he didn't look anything like what his voice sounded like, if you know what I mean. Is he still around on BLS?

Posted by: Montrose Morris at February 20, 2009 12:29 PM

Yeah What, WRVR, home of the Sunday Salsa show w Roger Dawson. Outta Riverside Church! Used to tune to it every Sunday.

Then one Sunday they pulled a palace coup, switched to C&W on the sly. A million New Yorkers shook their radios up and down to see what was wrong with them!

Posted by: denton at February 20, 2009 12:33 PM

Eight dollars a day for lunch is $40 a week. At 50 weeks, that's $2000. That is a lot of money, even today. Nothing "ghetto" about that.

Hmm, well, Art Bell sort of sounds like the voice I was listening to. Can't find a good clip of Fass to compare to yet. But Bell has the cadence and the meandering kind of speech/topics. So it may have been Bell. Going to check some more clips to be sure.

WKTU! 99x! LOL! Great to remember this stuff! That's how we heard new music - now I rely on friends making me CDs.

Someone turned me on to Pandora 'radio' the other day - you can 'teach it' what you like. Haven't played with it that much but it's fun so far.

[Now I REALLY have to get some work done!]

MM- was he skinny and medium height? Seems to me that every radio dj I met was always skinny, big adam's apple and a HUGE voice.

THe downside potential, and the reasons that the banks have been sinking, is that if they get nationalized, they are worth noting. The preferreds have been acting even worse.

Madoff Trustee: No Securities Bought in 13 Years

The trustee in charge of untangling the mess brought on by the Bernard Madoff scandal told investors Friday there was no indication the disgraced financier bought securities for his clients.

They just took the money and Jacked it off!

Madoff was arrested in December after investigators said he confessed to his sons that he had swindled investors of $50 billion in a Ponzi scheme. The 70-year-old former Nasdaq chairman remains confined to his Manhattan apartment under house arrest.

I don't know why I'm bothering.....

What, I said my mother's best friend's son, not my mother's best friend. There is a difference. My mother died in 1985, and her friend died a year later. Excuse me for not keeping up with her friend's son, who, as I said, I met a couple of times, not became best friends with. He was also about 15 years older than I am, and there was no need for me to keep up with a well known, married, older man, when I was a single woman in my twenties living in NYC. That may tittilate you and float your boat all around the harbor, but it does not interest me.

I did not know the man was dead because I don't listen to BLS, and everyone I knew around me who knew him was also dead. You happy now?

And the HBOTD award goes to...

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 20, 2009 4:15 PM

I've sometimes charge hubby. Does that make me a ho?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 4:15 PM

"Cobble: spare me!!! Don't try to kiss up to me now after all the harsh words that come out of your mouth in regards to / about me."

Whoa. Uhm, ok, I'm confused. What's going on BRG?

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 4:16 PM

ho comes from "whore"

whore

Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English hore, from Old English hōre; akin to Old Norse hōra whore, hōrr adulterer, Latin carus dear — more at charity

Date: before 12th century

1: a woman who engages in sexual acts for money : prostitute ; also : a promiscuous or immoral woman
2: a male who engages in sexual acts for money

ed.: Money is usually assumed in the use of the word whore. Not the case with slut, though

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 4:17 PM

Alright, you got me. I'm hubby's whore. And at 25 cents a pop, I am a cheap on too.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 4:20 PM

Oh Cobble, now that Snark is no longer awarding SOTD, you want to play nice with me...and kissy, kissy....pleeeease.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 4:23 PM

Ok, someone want to fill me in here? I'm suddenly feeling very peculiar. BRG?

and my fav. def. of hobag

ho bag 5 up, 3 down
A sack filled with Ho's, or promiscuous women. Many fun things can be done with a Ho bag. You can kick it, hit it with a big stick, throw it into a river. Some beleive that if you get them too riled up they become very agitated. Maybe because they want money, or for some unknown crack reason. What ever it may be that you decide to do with a sack of crackheads. It's always a good idea to bring a Ho bag to any social gathering. You'll be the life of the party.

(Friend 1)Hey, did you see that Ho bag that Marky mark and the funky bunch brought?

(Friend 2)Yeah! I think I'm gonna go throw some rattle snakes into it, and than kick it for a while. You wanna join in?

Whatever happened to the STFU award? That had so much promise!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 4:30 PM

I have to stop taking afternoon naps. I leave seeing a convo about old NY radio and come back to this???? You all are a riot!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 4:34 PM

And I have to START taking afternoon naps and stay out of this!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 4:39 PM

Mr. B????? is it because I Miss Pelled a few words in my original post that you're still holding it, come on the moment is lost now!!
I'll try from the other browser, let's see what you do with that?!?!

Posted by: Miss Pell at February 20, 2009 4:39 PM

InsertSnappyNameHere, you sure love your naps. Then again, nap is your middle name!

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 20, 2009 4:40 PM

:) Biff, I actually hate the naps, but it helps pass the time. Still unemployed :( :( waaaahhhh :( :(

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 4:44 PM

anyone have any fun plans this weekend?

*r*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 20, 2009 4:45 PM

> "Whatever happened to the STFU award?"

Have at it. Anyone can award the STFU. So sayeth the Snark.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at February 20, 2009 4:46 PM

"Then again, nap is your middle name!"

Biff, that is such a racist comment. Saying nap or nappy to a black woman is insulting. Do you have a cartoon to go along with this?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 4:46 PM

Don't cry Snappy, I'm not working either - do you like to cook? I've been doing a lot of cooking and baking. [And eating!!!]

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 4:47 PM

what are you looking to do snappy? i think there still is a help wanted sign in the dental office building off 4th avenue and garfield. not sure for what kind of position tho, and the sign was there for a very long time.

*r*

Posted by: PitbullNYC at February 20, 2009 4:47 PM

Funny BRG! CH, I've stopped cooking...too sad! Rob, I'm an attorney. I've been considering taking other work, but I don't know if I could get hired as a dental assistant!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 4:52 PM

Oh for crying out loud - will SOMEONE fight with BRG - she needs to get it out of her system today!

Just try not to get called for a double dribble.

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 20, 2009 5:16 PM

Happy Birthday Ben-the-Cat!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 5:16 PM

Biff, will you be doing the usual prostitute thing?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 5:19 PM

"Biff, will you be doing the usual prostitute thing?"
No, I stopped charging for my services a long time ago.

Posted by: Biff Champion at February 20, 2009 5:20 PM

C'mon Biff. Get back out there - I can be your pimpette and make some money. Screw this attorney thing!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:26 PM

Double Dribble:
I never understood why you can't bounce the ball than hold it with one or two hands while moving or stationary and then bounce it again.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:26 PM

Snappy, you won't make much money. 50% of a dime is gonna keep you nappy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:31 PM

two hands hopefully. no-one wants it if its one hand high. And I'm not talking horses.

Posted by: dittoburg at February 20, 2009 5:33 PM

Another Friday, another Open thread devolves...

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 5:35 PM

ROFL!!! BRG, Biff is gonna get you for that one!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:36 PM

Friday threads always descend into food and sox - its what the weekend is for.

Posted by: dittoburg at February 20, 2009 5:37 PM

Are we talking tea bagging, BRG?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 5:39 PM

DIBS!!!!

I was referring to basketball.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_dribble

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:42 PM

Something tells me I don't wanna know, but what is tea bagging?

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:43 PM

Snappy, I challenge him!
I can make more money in one night than he can.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:44 PM

Amtrak has wireless?
Is that where my tax dollars are going?

Do you get out at the 30th st station? Love that place.

Posted by: dittoburg at February 20, 2009 5:45 PM

Well, BRG, considering my unemployment status, I can be a pimpette for the both of you. Whoever doesn't bring in the required $$ gets smacked. Remember that SNL skit with WWW.BITCHBETTERHAVEMYMONEY.COM? That was too funny.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:47 PM

no ditto, Amtrak does not have wireless...its Verizon. Yes, get off at 30th Street.

On a similar note, Ryanair has started offering cell phone service on 50 flights...imagine how annoying that is going to be...

Hello, Hi, Are you there??? Hello???? I'm calling from my flight. No, just to say I'm calling from my flight.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 5:49 PM

"Whoever doesn't bring in the required $$ gets smacked."

You promise!! I'll be short all the time :-)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:49 PM

BRG - are you hitting on Snappy?

Posted by: dittoburg at February 20, 2009 5:52 PM

But Amtrak IS one big money losing mess. Amtrak has no idea what their business is. The priorities at Amtrak are:

1. The employees
2. The trains
3. The passengers

I'll stop now before I go on my usual anti-union tirade.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at February 20, 2009 5:52 PM

Aww! c'mon! I need the dough!!! I'll smack you around for free on your nights off :)

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:52 PM

DIBS, Amtrak can suck a lemon, but you have to admit that the Metroliner to D.C. is NICE! I've never had that much legroom outside of a limo.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 5:56 PM

"BRG - are you hitting on Snappy?"

Ditto, are you serious? Where have you been that now your noticing it??

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 5:58 PM

I was to busy looking at your pumps

Posted by: dittoburg at February 20, 2009 6:02 PM

your, you're...whatever!!

And yes Ditto, InsertSnappy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:03 PM

"And yes Ditto, InsertSnappy."

Oh, dear God....My punctuation is horribly wrong on this one.

And yes Ditto. I am, InsertSnappy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:09 PM

^^^ Not sure that is better, but....

Have a great weekend all.
Go out there and bring home some money.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:11 PM

You are InsertSnappy? And who else are you?!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:12 PM

No, I, Snappy, have no other name. I think she meant that, yes, she is hitting on InsertSnappy.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 20, 2009 6:14 PM

bayridgegirl is Snappy?
Well at least she spells corectly.

Posted by: Miss Pell at February 20, 2009 6:16 PM

Ha ha Miss Pell, say....are you going to be at the party?

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:20 PM

oh, for crying out loud.
I was trying to be subtle and creative with my punctuation, yet be very naughty....but failed terribly.

Let's try it again, not subtle at all:
And yes Ditto. I want [to] InsertSnappy.

You guys want to figure out the subtle way of saying that with the comma and less words, knock yourselves out.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:23 PM

Cobble, which Miss (there are so many now) would you like to see at the party?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:27 PM

Me thinks only you, BRG, are turning odd bits of punctuation into full words!

Me thinks me needs a drinky!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:27 PM

Hmm, let's see...so many to choose from...

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:29 PM

Miss Chiff. Yes, for sure, Miss Chiff. No, maybe Miss Adventure...or uhm, Miss Demeanor!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:30 PM

"Me thinks only you, BRG, are turning odd bits of punctuation into full words!"

Re-write:
Me thinks only you, BRG, are turning up at the party.
- Cobblehiller

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:31 PM

Okay, now I'm def. out of here.
Enjoy.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at February 20, 2009 6:34 PM

Did I say that?! ; )

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:35 PM

See ya!

Posted by: cobblehiller at February 20, 2009 6:35 PM

"I've sometimes charge hubby. Does that make me a ho?"

No, that makes you a hooker!
